What player comparisons the “experts” way off on?

I remember nbadraft.net comparing Smart to James Harden when coming out. I literally can’t think of two more opposite players.

The Adam Morrison/Larry Bird comps were super cringy too.

I like this blurb at the end:

Quote
[6/25/15 Edit: Scouting report and comparison to G.O.A.T. were written while Stevenson was in high school and assumed to be headed to Kansas. Lessen learned, never compare anyone to Michael Jordan. This was 2000, the site was just getting started. Go watch a tape of Stevenson in high school, he was incredible. One of the most spectacular 17 year old wings you could ever see. Not going to college had a catastrophic effect on him. It seems everyone enjoys dis-crediting our expertise by bringing up the year 2000 DeShawn Stevenson comparison to MJ. We never went back and changed his comparison after it was originally made. Apologies to MJ.... Hey the "Sports Leader" compared Marshawn Brooks to Kobe Bryant just a few years ago.The other large NBA draft site compared Greg Paulus to John Stockton. Nobody wants to bring that up?]

They really should have stopped before the bolded part. The rest comes off really desperate. While nobody should be compared to MJ while just in high school, Stevenson apparently had quite a bit of promise.

Oh, and btw, 'we never went back and changed his comparison after it was originally made'? Is this Chad Ford or something?  :P

Morrison/Bird doesn't bother me all that much because they really did have a similar style in college.  Bird, however, had that nasty in him where he could never fail and it is very hard to predict things like that.  Morrison also ended up not being anywhere near the athlete Bird was, but again that isn't always that easy to tell from someone who is dominating the college game.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

I know a certain poster, who shall remain nameless, compared Mickey’s skill-set to Bosh, but with Taj Gibson’s toughness and Blake’s leaping ability.

Edit:
Sorry, I just read that it was related to experts.

I know the Harrison brothers were really overrated while they were in HS. I believe NBA Draft Net  compared them to Gary Payton.

1. I don't think nbadraft.net are "experts." They are armchair scouts with slightly more access to watching games in-person. Their evaluations are extremely basic and demonstrate little understanding of the nuances of the game. For them, athleticism always equals elite defensive potential. High ppg in college almost always equals all-star in the NBA. They rarely deviate from the majority narrative on players, never pick good sleepers, and have been laughably wrong on top prospects.

Not saying I could do better. I'm just saying I probably wouldn't do a whole lot worse.

2. My favorite comparison was this summer when a summer league announcer compared Mitchell Robinson to Anthony Davis.

To keep it recent, the RJ Barrett to Michael Redd is ridiculous. Being left-handed is the only thing they have in common.

That's definitely a thinly veiled shot at Ford, yeah.

Even worse, in my opinion: Calling Harold Minor "Baby Jordan." At least Stevenson had some actual in-game talent.

It seems every year some big with excellent perimeter skills gets compared to Al Jefferson.

Andrew Wiggins and MJ.

Although I still think "Maple Jordan" is the coolest nickname I've ever heard.

Huh? Al was uh not known for his perimeter skills, he was an excellent post and mid-post player. Or is that why it's a bad comp?

Yup.

Here is the nbadraftroom blurb and comparison for Naz Reid, who is a silky smooth outside shooter.
I can't remember which site did a silly Al J. comparison last year...but it seems to come up a lot.

HT: 6-10 - WT: 240 - WING: 7-3 - FROM: LSU
Reid is a big, strong, old school forward with a high skill level and slick ball handling ability. A very heady player who can really pass the ball for a big.
Nene, Al Jefferson
