Game Notes

The Celtics are looking for their first 4 game win streak of the season as they host the Phoenix Suns.   This begins a 5 game home stand that will also include Houston, Charlotte, New Orleans, and Chicago.   The Suns may put some extra effort into this game as they are sitting on 1999 wins and are looking for their 2000th franchise win.  A loss in this game will put the Celtics in the record books and not in a good way.

The Suns will reach 2000 wins in the 4th fewest games behind the Celtics, Lakers, and Sixers.  This game will be their 4th try to gain that milestone for the franchise.   The Suns have lost 3 in a row while the Celtics have won 3 in a row.  The Suns are 1-9 in their last 10 games while the Celtics are 5-5 in their last 10.

The Celtics are 10-6 at home while the Suns have struggled on the road with a 2-15 record.   But Phoenix have won 4 out of the last 5 against the Celtics, including their only game last season, a 79-71 win at the Garden.  The Suns are 5-4 against the Celtics in the KG era.

Both the Suns and the Celtics started the season with 9 new players that weren't with the team last season.  Both have struggled somewhat with incorporating the new players.  While the Celtics seem to be turning it around, the Suns are still struggling to find some team chemistry.  The Suns played in Milwaukee last night and so fatigue may come into play for them as well.

The Celtics are looking for their first 4 game win streak along with trying to get back over .500 again with a win in this game.  With some favorable matchups coming up during this 5 game home stand, this might be time for the Celtics to make a nice run.  If they play like they did in their past 3 games,  it shouldn't be a problem.

Key Matchups
(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/RondoBos.jpg)  vs (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/phoenix/GoranPhx.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Goran Dragic
Rondo is coming off yet another suspension, although this one wasn't exactly deserved.   He should be fired up to get this win since his teammates bailed him out and pulled off the win over the Knicks.  Dragic is averaging 14.4 points and 6.4 assists so it won't be a walk in the park for Rondo but he should be able to win the matchup if he is aggressive.

(http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/boston/KGBos.jpg)  vs  (http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nba/phoenix/GortatPhx.jpg)
Kevin Garnett vs Marcin Gortat
With all the rumors going around about Gortat wanting to come to Boston, he may try to audition for the Celtics by having a big game in this one.  Gortat is averaging 8.5 points and 8.6 rebounds this season and it will be up to KG to keep him out of the paint.

Honorable Mention
Brandon Bass vs Luis Scola
Scola is averaging 12/9 points and 6.2 rebounds but has in the past found ways to come up big against the Celtics.  He can hit the jumper and he can get to the hoop and so Brandon's defense will be crucial to keep Scola from having a big game in this one.

Keys to the Game
Defense - This is the key to every win this season and to a championship as well.   We have seen the Celtics defense that we have come to know and love in the past 3 games and because of that defense they are on a 3 game win streak.  Playing defense like that takes energy and teamwork and hopefully the Celtics will continue to play with that type of defensive energy and teamwork.

Ball Movement -  The Celtics need to move the ball and find the open man in order to stretch the Suns weak defenses.  They also need to try to get the ball into the paint and not just settle for jumpers.  If they get the ball into the post they will be able to score, draw the foul or kick out for an open jumper.   Against the Knicks, even without Rondo, the Celtics had 26 assists, which was their second highest assist total for the season.  When the ball moves, the Celtics are much harder to guard.

Crash the Boards
- The Celtics must make an effort to grab rebounds, especially on the offensive end.   By grabbing offensive rebounds it will prevent the Suns from getting out on the break.     Rebounding is mostly desire and effort and the team that wants it most will win the rebounding battle.  The Celtics have been rebounding well in their 3 recent wins and every player is doing their part to crash the boards.

Bench Play -  The Celtics got a big boost off the bench in the Knicks game.  Jeff Green Jared Sullinger, Courtney Lee, and Leandro Barbosa all pitched in to help the Celtics get past the Knicks.  The Celtics need to get that kind of production from their reserves on a consistent basis.

X-Factors
Focus and Home Court
The Celtics have tended to come up big against teams like the Knicks but then let down against teams like the 12-23 Suns.  The Celtics have to come out just as focused in this game as they did against the Knicks, Pacers and Hawks (in the second half, at least).  Also, the Celtics are at home and the Suns haven't played well on the road.  Hopefully home court will give the C's a boost.

We need to continue this winning streak we're on and for that to happen I think the bench has to play like they did the last 3 games. Jeff Green, Courtney Lee, and Sully.

Plus it's my birthday so that would be a nice gift  ;D

I think Rondo is going to take over this game for them holding it down during his suspension. Look for a big game from him.

Suns have very little shot-creation offensively outside of Dragic in the pick and roll. Throw Bradley on him and see what type of havoc he can create to the Suns offense.

I think this is a good game for Sully to get extended minutes. Against Scola. A limited athlete. Tough and smart though. Sully with his physicality and rebounding ability will likely make a better matchup against Scola than Bass would.

Going to this game.  First game I'll have been to, actually.  Hopefully it's a good one.

I thought the KG quote was really funny (just because it's so ridiculous that he said it) but I don't love the doctored box of Cheerio's with Melo's wife on it.  KG said something to get under Melo's skin, and it worked.  That's great.

Let's not turn this into something where we're all getting in on disrespecting Melo's wife.

Noone actually knows what Garnett said. Personally, I find the whole situation pretty comical top to bottom.

Back on topic though, I am willing to bet 5 TP's that jermaine oneal has a good game. Just to spite the celtics.

Lets go Celtics!

Despite initial doubts, I've come to be very fond of Fab.  His development so far has impressed me, and I hope in about two years he can be an impact player for this team.

If we have to give him up to get a much-needed big, fine.  If we have the option to keep him, though, I'd like to see that happen.

I like Bradley's offense in the flow but not when we try to go to him..at least right now he's barely getting his shot back and expending a lot of energy on defense. Rondo needs to be aggressive on offense.

That's pretty uncool to wish an injury on anyone like that man. Let's hope he gets a ball bouncing off his head or something, nothing serious.

can we play like this every night?

our PG and SF are rated high. our SG should be much better the way AB is playing. just need to elevate our PF position. The C spot is medocre in the rankings also though but we know KG can get it done.

Bass, Melo and #1 pick for Gortat?

HELL NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Gortat has not impressed me ONE BIT!

just get a big who can block shots and rebound and we could be set.

yes, i said it. and yes i give doc credit for attacking! BRAVO DOC BRAVO!  ;D

I like him. He is fairly young and give us better size.

Meh. i dunno now. look AB is great and really helps but we do need another decent big if we are hoisting 18. Just my two cents.

Not taking into consideration the team, best stretch of the season?

Obviously, and of course this stretch just HAPPEND to happen as soon as AB came back. Just like last year........all the bradley haters eat your crow.

nobody hates bradley son, cool down.

People were downplaying AB as if he wasn't that important to this team. I know what I'm talking about son, cool down.

we still need a big, kid. Ab is not a rim protector. what if he gets hurt? we need two bigs who can rebound and block shots. KG and who? Whop is the guy when KG sits? WIlcox? laughable. COllins? laughable. Sully is doing great at the 4 though but cannot block.

Stopped reading right there. If you knew ANYTHING about me you would know i have been preaching this for the longest time. You're arguing with me about things i agree with, unbelievable.

Gortat is a big that can block shots and rebounds, plus he is very good in the pick and roll, Rondo would get him so many easy dunks.

If the price is only Bass , Melo and a 1st you have to do it IMO. We have a 2 year window, the exact length of Gortats contrtact

PG: Rondo   / Terry
SG: Bradley / Lee
SF: PP      / Green
PF: Sully   / Wilcox
 c: KG      / Gortat

He just keeps dribbling it up the court, wasting 10secs every time and getting them late clock shots.

Going to be easier to trade now!!! ;)

All of a sudden I wan't us to hold on the Lee. Terry and Bass could net us something good.

I want to hold on to terry. Bass on the other hand can get lost.

Celtics are playing well but are very flawed. They need a true back-up pg and a center if they want to win it all. You got to trade someone to get those pieces.

To build off what you said, I think Doc needs to let Terry handle the ball more.  Jet is best when he runs the PnR or PnP, as his speed allows him to drive and kick, which I think is an underrated part of his game.

Best stat of the night:

Garnett: 29 minutes
Pierce: 23 minutes
Rondo: 30 minutes

And yeah, Rondo played like crap tonight, but so did Pierce and the rest of the starting unit.

Our bench was made for nights like these and thankfully they stepped up to the challenge, in a big way.

Im not saying trade him or any of that I know hell snap out of it but you gotta admit the Hawks game he was good but he's been spotty lately
He had an injury recently too, that caused two of his ugly games, plus the entire team was awful for the first three games of the four game losing streak.

Against Pacers/Hawks he looked good, but for some reason the entire starting unit was off tonight.

Solid game for the C's. I wish we hadn't melted down offensively in the third with the starters, but the bench did a great job of getting the lead up into a comfortable 10-12 point range quickly after that.

Another win, need to keep piling them on!

This is what I hoped for with more depth and youth.

On games where are top guys are struggling, which inevitably happens against the lower tier teams, that they can come in and push us to a victory.

Not to mention after that Knicks game there would for sure be a let down.

Great game by the Celtics, ignoring that awful opening to the 3rd quarter.

Very intrigued for the Rockets game, especially after watching them beat LA last night. Unfortunately I won't be able to watch it in person, but Harden/Bradley should be a fun one!

I strongly recommend otherwise. Sullinger could still be traded, and then it'd be just plain awkward.

Yeah, that would be pretty lame.

A couple of years ago I got my Rondo jersey right in the middle of a ton of trade rumors involving him. I made that purchase with one eye shut, lol.

our Achilles heel is rebounding what Sully does best, it's one of the reasons were doing better lately. Sully is young improving defensively and believe it or not helps KG out a ton as well. I don't think he's going anywhere.

I "m wanting an Bradley jersey.... he is my favorite player after KG...I had his tee shirt on for this win...when ever I wear it the Celtics win. ;D

I don't Danny has the nads to trade away AB.  Not after he has picked up this team.
