Game Notes
The Celtics continue their 3 game road trip with a stop in Detroit to take on the Pistons.  These two teams met on November 27 in Boston when the Pistons handed the Celtics the only loss in their 5 game home stand.   They will meet once more in Detroit on February 23.

When they met on November 27,  the Pistons were 14-6 and in 2nd place just 3.5 games behind the Celtics.  Since that game, they have lost 5 straight games and have slipped to 6th in the East, 7 games behind the Celtics.  The Cavs, however have crept up to within 3 games of the Celtics after their win over the Sixers on Saturday night.

The Celtics had won 4 straight before losing on Friday night to the Spurs in their first game on this road trip.  The Celtics haven't lost 2 in a row since the first two back to back games of the season.  The Pistons have lost their last 5 games with their last 4 losses by just 5 or fewer points.  The Celtics are 10-3 on the road while the Pistons are 8-3 at home.

Aron Baynes left the Celtics game in San Antonio after being kneed in the stomach by Pau Gasol.  He didn't return to that game but is listed as probable for this game.  Marcus Morris is questionable with soreness in his knee.  Gordon Hayward remains out for the Celtics.  For the Pistons, Jon Leuer is out with an ankle injury.

I'm going to guess that Baynes starts for the Celtics since Drummond dominated the Celtics in their first game with Morris starting and getting the bulk of the minutes.  Drummond is the type of player that Baynes is perfect to play, not to mention that Baynes leads the league with a 91.5 defensive rating.  Also, Baynes played for Detroit last season and has experience defending Drummond in practice.  He definitely needs more than the 12 minutes he played in their first meeting.

Key Matchups
(https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Baynes_Aron_bos17.jpg) vs (https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Drummond_Andre_det17.jpg)
Aron Baynes vs Andre Drummond
In the first game between these two teams, Drummond had 26 points on 10-12 shooting, 22 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals.  Marcus Morris started that game and played twice as many minutes as Baynes.  It seems that if Baynes is good to go, it would be the best move to start him and let him cover Drummond as much as possible.  Drummond is averaging 14.4 points, 15.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.6 steals.

(http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Horford_Al_bos1617.jpg) vs (https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Harris_Tobias_det17.jpg)
Al Horford vs Tobias Harris
Harris is leading the Pistons with 18.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game.  In the first game between these two teams, Harris finished with 31 points.  Hopefully they can contain him better in this game.

Honorable Mention
Jaylen Brown vs Avery Bradley
Avery, who is the Pistons' best defender will likely defend Kyrie to try to slow him down.   Jaylen will still be wearing his goggles that affect his perception somewhat so hopefully he has had time to get a bit more used to them.  Avery is averaging 16.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals, but it will be his defense on Kyrie that likely will make the biggest difference in this game.

Keys to the Game
Defense-  Defense wins games and the Celtics have been winning with their defense.  The Celtics are 16-0 when they hold opponents under 100.  The Celtics are still ranked first with a defensive rating of 99.4 but this number has been slowly climbing as the Celtics have let their defense slip somewhat in recent games.  The Pistons are 13th with a defensive rating of 104.7.   The Celtics have to get back to making defense a priority.

Rebound - Rebounding takes effort and desire.  The Celtics will need both in order to beat  front line of the Pistons to the rebounds.  The Celtics have rebounded very well in most games this season but have slacked off in a few games recently.  The Celtics are 7th with 45.1 rebounds per game.  The Pistons are 22nd with 42.4 rebounds per game but the Pistons are 10th in second chance points with 13.6 per game.  The Celtics have to put out the effort to keep the Pistons off the boards (especially Andre Drummond).

Be Aggressive - The Celtics need to be aggressive in going for loose balls, rebounding and defending. They also have to be aggressive in going to the basket and not settle for threes especially if they aren't falling . Good things happen when they get inside. They have to be hungry and play like the team that wants it more.

Play 48 Minutes
- The Celtics have started off slowly at times and then have to play extra hard to catch up.  At other times they get off to a big lead and then let up and let the other team back into the game.  The Pistons are tied with the Celtics for the most comeback wins of 10 points or more with 7 games each.  The Celtics can't let up, even if they get a big lead because the Pistons are very good at coming back from big deficits.

X-Factors
Road Game - The Celtics are playing in the second of a 3 game road trip.  It is easy to get distracted on the road, especially for younger players.  The Celtics need to keep their focus and play their game and not let the hostile crowd, the travel, and the distractions of playing on the road affect their play.  The Pistons will have a home advantage that the Celtics will have to focus on overcoming.

Pay Back- Just 13 days ago, the Pistons beat the Celtics 118-108 at the Garden.  The Celtics should have that loss fresh in their minds and be looking for some pay back.   The Celtics need to use that loss for motivation to play extra hard in this one and pay them back with a win on the Pistons home court.

I only saw the last 14 or so minutes of the previous game, but we didn't lose because of fatigue or whatever.  We lost because we played brainless basketball, imo.

Therefore, given that Bradley will be covering Kyrie, the trade-off is a major size mismatch via Reggie Jackson on Jaylen, so play through the latter until Detroit adjusts.  If Brown takes a perimeter jumper against Jackson we're bailing them out.  Just milk that matchup until the Pistons decide to come and double, at which point you go around the horn and get both open shots for Tatum, etc, as well as create favorable conditions pertaining to offensive rebounding for yourself...oh what's the point, lol?

What are the odds Harris has another career night?

Also, I expect a huge game from Kyrie tonight. Don't think he appreciated the celebratory actions of some of the Pistons players last time.

If we're establishing Al on the post consistently on the offensive end, I don't mind it too much.  But yeah a bit concerning defensively.

not bad at all. 8 point lead after one quarter is good.

detroit is quick on offense and can play defense, but not that consistently.

celtics have to execute on offense, smart has to make at least a FEW shots.  :( they have been moving the ball really well. oh, and baynes has made a difference as well.

He's hurt the C's with his shooting this season, so "again" is accurate, but he's been a very valuable contributor to wins as well.    Got to look at the whole with Marcus, let's  see what he does the rest of the game.

Yup, Baynes is quietly the MVP of the 1st half.  Neutralized Drummond and our rebounding was noticeably better while he was on the floor.

Those were two great plays for Kyrie to start the 3rd.  Surprised he didn't make at least 1 of those 2 shots.

Offense is moving much better here. Detroit couldn't miss in the first game and can't make a layup in this one.

Yes lots of turnovers and blown plays. Like he tries for the big move a lot of the time, like he's trying the stuff he mastered in an empty gym, but against defense. And it just ain't there.

we need GH and a stud DPE coming off bench in playoffs. This bench is too much Dr jeckyll and Mr hyde

Technically, it would be too much Mr. Hyde.   Or maybe too much Heckle and Jeckle.

all i am saying is these results are not sustainable especially in playoffs with these PERFORMANCES. we need to fix the little things and then we can let the results take care of themsleves

Can't always win pretty. Maybe we are forgetting that this team is still one of the youngest in the league and we are still missing few key pieces. I've seen teams that dominated the regular season then gets steamrolled in the playoffs. Ugly wins like this will only makes the team better.

that was my guess as well originally. rest starters so they last. get deep bench experience. problem is it is not working. we won't be going past 4 or 5 on bench in playoffs anyway and we still have to get a DPE guy

Or, god forbid, ala the pistons the Celtics drop five of six games

It was a very good win on the road by a good team that did not play its best game. I like how this team is coming together and how the bench plays defense. One more scorer off the bench would he welcome though.

If you are who you are, then the C's are a 23-5 team that manages to win ugly when they need to.  I get that these types of wins aren't sustainable, but "who they are" is the team with the 2nd best record in the NBA.

Smart is agonizing, but a whole lot better than Tony Allen was before he left for Memphis.  TA was a nightmare with the ball and his 1:1 Assist:TO ratio tells the story reasonably well.  What it doesn't tell you is you got the same feeling when TA touched the ball as you feel when Marcus is about to shoot.  Marcus averages 5 assists a game and plays superior defense with superior energy.  He needs to stop shooting -- and he will.  He's still a very valuable player on this team.

Marcus Smart is a special defender. Tony Allen was a better one.

He just has to take and make enough shots that other teams know he is willing to shoot if left alone.

As for their 23-5 record, they have the leagues 4th best pythagorean win% (which I think is just a combo of net rating and strength of schedule or something like that).

They have played like a 19-8 team. Really good, but not as good as 23-5 suggests.

That said, when you have a coach like Brad and a closer like Irving you should always finish a bit above those types of projections.

With all that said, if we can continue at that projected 19-8 pace for the rest of the year we would finish at 61-21. Not too shabby!

This Pistons team would beat the C's in a playoff series imo. Hope the Pistons either get in the 3-6 range or miss the playoffs completely because I do not have faith that the C's could beat them 4 times.

it is why too many are putting too much into results. i am mainly looking at performances. now would i take ugly wins against the cavs in ECF? heck yes but IF we get performances like this we won't get by the raps or wiz or whomever. lol

Now you're exaggerating. This team have already beaten the Raptors without our best players. And the Wizards? They are pretenders. We beat them last year with a much more inferior roster. I wouldn't worry much about them.

Pistons have also lost 6 straight games.

Agree, he dominated the paint. It shows there is still value in those bruiser types of Centers.

It's once of those things where you don't need one till you need one. And tonight against Drummond we needed one.

Or, god forbid, ala the pistons the Celtics drop five of six games

It was a very good win on the road by a good team that did not play its best game. I like how this team is coming together and how the bench plays defense. One more scorer off the bench would he welcome though.

It is a pretty hopeful thought that DA has the DPE to get either a big to add even more toughness in the middle, or a sharpshooter for the bench.  I am not a fan of trading either Smart or Rozier, but of course that depends on who'd be coming back.

I think brad is resting players through some games and trying to envolve everyone...he did not give the ball to irving too much today after last nights super effort.... i do not like how smart plays.. i do not like the amount of 3s horford took... i would like to see brown and tatum taking more shots through systems... played some great defence though.. and baynes was a beast.. i like ojeleje... nice defender... calm shooter... keeper.... if we found a true pg who can shoot and defend decently i would trade smart....

that was my guess as well originally. rest starters so they last. get deep bench experience. problem is it is not working. we won't be going past 4 or 5 on bench in playoffs anyway and we still have to get a DPE guy

just to be clear. sure rest is working but our deep bench SUX!

Ah, but they have...upside!  Maybe by the playoffs they could each play a competent 5 spot minutes in an important game. That's pretty good for your 11th and 12th player.

All I can say to the stevens lynch mob is thank sweet baby Jesus we don't have Thibs running guys into the dust.

Not to mention we are basically a brand new team finding its identity.

I can only shudder to think the reaction if we were 19-8

what lynch mob? there is ONE POSTER who bashes everything CBS does. you figure out who it is ok?

I myself love CBS but he is not perfect and does deserve just criticisms. I am sorry if you cannot see that.

right REGULAR SEASON. I am talking PLAYOFFS. 7 game playoffs NOT REGULAR SEASON. ok???  If you don't think the wiz are a threat I am not sure what else to tell you. They played us tough as nails last year. we cannot overlook anyone. Are we bettter now? sure. i agree. but the point is again...........it is obvious we can have bad performances. I agree with brad. forget that win streak. let's focus on fixing things and our inconsistent performance moving forward.

It's nice to see we solved the Drummond issue tonight.  ;D

Might not sound like much, but I feel good with seeing this team (and coach Brad) adjusting as the season progresses, and it's still kind of early (not early early, but still not halfway through the season).

That said, I also love how we FINALLY have MULTIPLE true scoring threats on this team, and multiple guys who can get clutch buckets LATE in games. Jayson $$$ Tatum is proving to be a big bonus in that area as well (like, I knew he could be a superstar in this league, but DANG he's contributing so much in his rookie season.. way more than I expected tbh).

A lot of that was just more baynes and no morris. He's a much better matchup for that team.

Good adjustment by brad from the first time we played them. We actually outrebounded them.
