With all this talk about offering Corey Maggette a contract there has been some speculation on celticsblog, weei and Comcast that the Celtics might be willing to bring in Corey Maggette and trade Ray Allen this off-season (sell high when he can get the most back in return)

There is no need to trade Ray this year. Why break up the big 3 without giving them a chance to repeat? Ray Allen can still play at an all-star level for at least one more year IMO.

If they are going to trade him it will be after the 08-09 season because he will have a 18.7 mil expiring contract. A lot of teams will be lining up for that expiring contract because there will be big name free agents
like Lebron and Wade on the market that off-season.

Maggette would fit perfect as a 6th man on this team because

A)He can play SF and SG. That means we could play Ray + PP 33-35 mins a
game and have Maggette come off the bench for 26-30 mins a night,
saving Ray and PP legs for the playoffs
B) He is an athletic guy, it's not like he can't play defense, I think
if tom thibodeau gets a hold of him and he has all the teamates
preaching defense he will buy in

The only teams that can offer Maggette more then the full MLE are:

1)Seattle: They are already building around Durant and Green at the Wings
and the franchise is not stable so I can't see them offering a
long term deal to him   ( Max Offer= 7.2 mil)

2)Bobcats: They are paying Wallace and Richardson a combined 70 mil for
the next 3 years so I don't see them getting another high
priced wing player  (Max Offer= 11.1 mil)

3)Memphis: They are one team that could use him because they just traded
Mike Miller so he would fit here, but will they spend big
money this off-season? who knows with that franchise?
           (Max offer= 14.5 mil)

4)Philly: They already have a very similar player in Iguadala and they
are in more need of a low post player then a wing.
          (Max offer= 22 mil)

5)Warriors: They could offer him a contract if Baron Davis signs
elsewhere. This makes since because the only established wing
they have is Stephen Jackson.(Max offer= 26.5 mil)

So to me Danny's plan must be this. Talk Maggette into coming here as a 6th man and give him a contract similar to Posey last year where he can opt out after 1 or 2 years. This way he has a chance to win a championship and prove he can defend and play at a championship level as the 6th man thus raising his market value and getting him the long term contract he is looking for.

Then Danny will likely move Ray Allen after next season when he becomes very valuable with 18.7 mil expiring contract. Ray could bring back a big name player who an organization is tired of or isn't working out with for whatever reason.

So Maggette can opt out after 1 or 2 years and then sign a long term contract as Ray Allen's replacement and we get a big name player back with Ray Allens expiring contract.

If this is indeed Danny's plan it is genius and will give us a much larger window of opportunity to contend for titles!!!!

C.M. needs at least a 3 year contract to have Bird rights

I just don't see it as likely.  There is a chance that everyone can be traded.

If Milwaukee offered you Michael Redd and Charlie Bell for Ray Allen and Brian Scalabrine, maybe you consider it

That said, I don't see the Big 3 being broken up after a championship

oh ok well it still makes sense cause Maggette can still opt out and get bigger buck somewhere so it would make sense for him still to prove himself on a championship team

Danny Ainge is the guy who said he'd have traded Bird.

If it's a deal he thinks has value, he'll take it.  The Finals probably make it a bit more difficult for him, because Ray played lights out.  If we got 82 games of that he'd be impossible to trade, but that's extremely unlikely and Danny knows this.

Like I said on the other trade, unless both Magette and Posey sign (and I don't see how that happens) Ray is not going to be traded.

But when Ray is in his last year, having Magette allows Ainge to go for the best trade and not worry about replacing Ray since his replacement is already on the team.
