Title: CelticsBlog HOF: Year 1 (2004)
Post by: Jeff on June 30, 2009, 07:17:40 AM
Anyone here remember the original days back in 2004?  Be honest.  I'm pretty sure there were only a few hundred people that knew about the site at all in the earliest days.

Here are my inductees

hagrid - Original co-author and fellow mod from back in the FanHome days.

First CB post ever
http://celticsrant.blogspot.com/2004/03/back-to-future.html

The Boston.com Chat Room Migration - This was what got things really going here.  The Globe had a chat room that was pretty popular with several diehards like myself and Master PO.  They announced that they'd be shutting the place down.  Panic ensued.  I tinkered with some java-based chat room plug-ins and added the chat to CelticsBlog and invited everyone to migrate over.  Instant fanbase.  One of my proudest strategic moves.

Year 1 Anniversary Posts

Ahhhh the good ole days when Jiri Welsch and Marcus banks were young talent we just couldn't trade, Mark Blount was an inside presence we would miss if shipped out and Chucky Atkins was the best pick and roll PG in recent memory.

Amazing what five years can do. Great great stuff Jeff. Thanks for getting this rolling.

And if I could be so bold I would like to nominate one Jeff Clark for Celticsblog HOF by general membership acclaim for his contributions in developing and creating of the greatest professional sports blog in the world!

Do I have anyone that would second this motion?

I am not HOF material due to the infrequent amount I am on here, but I deserve an honorable mention for making you the first blog in the country that we were getting KG (thusly winning Banner #17)

Besides that though I am a dink and deserve no mention.

Great job Jeff.

a) we'll get to that when we get to 2007
b) that post is both self promoting and self deprecating at the same time - well done!

I'll certainly second that motion.

Is there any way to find out the date you originally joined CB?  I know we're on, what 5.0 now?  but I am pretty sure I've been here since b4 the Tony Allen draft, so now I'm thinking I might have been on the Blog in its infancy, and didn't know it.  That makes me happy since this Blog has been such a big part of my life for a long time now.  Thank you so much Jeff and all the others that keep this thing running smoothly.

I think Jeff's inductees are perfect, with the exception of the one guy he left out:  himself.

Even though hagrid and I weren't on the staff together for very long, I definitely picked up a lot of my moderation techniques from him.  He was a great example to learn from.

wow here i thought i was a wiley ol' vet and i'm only 2006. just makes me wonder what took me so long -- staying on top of the Cs in those days was a true hassle -- hoping some sucker at ESPN would have a source and refreshing the globe page every 10 minutes.

thanks, guys.

I 2nd the motion.

The 2004 days were great.

I'm sad with what happened to my old account. I think when the new look took over and joined the SB Nation I had to create a new account.

Yes Jeff,  I remember the old days.  I used to be on the boston.com chat room all the time in the summer, and someone turned me onto celticsblog within the chat, the rest is history.  Hey I'm glad you mentioned him because what ever happened to Hagrid?  He was great.  RickyD fan, remember you.  I still remember getting a confirmation email from jeff way back when, and was like who's this Jeff guy? he's not even from Boston?  ;)  Now Jeff is the heralded mafia don of the family and should be.  Big shot out to the old schoolers that are still on these boards, because there are not enough familiar names from past.  Jeff is my only friend on the board :-[ ?  Just kidding.  The new community is pretty great, and the new mods to a good job.

What year did the C's re-acquire Toine?  I'm pretty sure that was how I found this place.  I needed the info!

As for the inductee ideas I stand by Jeff's opinion on these (with the exception of his humble self exclusion).

I also think it works nicely to start with the Class of `04 as we have a 5 year period to judge that no one goes Madoff on us or anything  ;) .

So, where do we from here in terms of some sort of official statement or home for this?

I caught on in 2005 soon after I had moved temporarily from Boston to Italy.  I was so starved for celtics news, I remember I used to hit the refresh button on boston.com celtics page over and over again hoping something new would pop up.  I would scour the internet looking for anything related to the celtics and that is how I stumbled upon this site.  It's really crazy to think about it, but it has truly changed my life.  I'm sure its the same for many of you, but celticsblog is the site that I check most often everyday, as well as the first site that I go to as soon as the internet works.  Hell, I only really use the internet to check four or five different sites regularly, but Celticsblog is the one I look forward to the most.

We have an actual community here.  I feel strangely familiar with everyone here, their personalities, styles and insights.  I feel like I know everyone really intimately even though I've never met a single one of you in person (except for my brother Reggies Ghost.)  In fact, I can still remember the day when I introduced him him to the site, and now a few years later he is the "sig master."  He's never been the same since that day that I explained to him what celticsblog was all about.

And thinking about my progression on the site is even more entertaining.  For the first few years I was purely and completely a guest.  I was afraid of opening an account.  That sounds weird to say, but I enjoyed so much reading everyone else's insights, and was very intimidated of getting into arguments on my own, even if they weren't face to face and the consequences of disagreeing were small.  After a few years I finally got up the courage to create my own account, but even then I hardly ever posted.  As you guys can see from my post count, I still don't do it very often.  I have incredibly strong opinions about the celtics, and I laugh now at the thought that I get frustrated if there isn't a new article by Jeff every time I refresh the main page, as though he should be on there adding something new every 30 minutes.  Hell, if Roy Hobbs doesn't actually look like Gene Hackman from Hoosiers I might have a nervous breakdown.  Haha.

But, in the end, Celticsblog feels strangely like a home.  No matter where I am in the world, or what I'm doing, if I have an internet connection I can always come back to a place where I feel right.

Thanks Jeff, Celticsblog is definitely deserving of a Hall of Fame.

Biggs I remember u and those good ol Boston.com Chat days. I loved the old chat with guys like Hagrid Gandalf OldTimer Rodzilla Reyquilla and others. I also recall calling WEEI and giving shout outs to the fellas in that chat. To bad no one is ever in the chat on this site unless there is a game or on draft night.

Oh and one last thing that I forgot.  Celticsblog was the inspiration for my brother and I to make Greentown's Finest.  After discovering that there was such a strong willed community of celtics fans who were starving for content, we got the idea to start our documentary series about them.  Our whole goal the entire time was just to make it so that we could get people on celticsblog to watch it.  I remember planning ahead and making sure our forum post introducing the first chapter was exactly the way we wanted it, choosing every word so carefully.  Our whole basis of whether it was a success or not was dependent upon what people here thought, as we worked on it for months without any goal of making money.

There is a lot of passion on display on this site everyday.  Greentowns Finest would never have existed without celticsblog.

I honestly don't remember when I started posting here.  I think back then I use to spend some time chatting with the savages on the ESPN message boards.  I still remember someone referencing Marcus Banks by saying, "6-7 Larry Bird.  Boy's a stah!! Book it!" which I think had started as a running joke from someone describing Jiri in that fashion and then turned into a fitting description for every young Celtic regardless of type and height.

That still makes me giggle for some reason.

I remember thinking when the Globe chat got shut down, that the end was near. When Jeff told me he had a new site......my first question was "A new chat room?" because I had no idea what a blog site was......exactly as I had no idea what a chat room was until I stumbled into the Globe chat one day only to be verbally attacked by some guy named Old Fan.

Well, when Jeff told me there would be a chat....I asked him if I could be help him out with some money (I am always looking for an investment that somehow feeds my own neurosis). Old Ranter was always pretty self sufficient so I was not able to gain any ownership but mostly I was interested in helping the young boy out. I have watched him grow from Ranter to Mr Jeff Clark and he always showed he had one hell of a work ethic and could crank out stories like I can crank out visits to the bathroom with a bad prostrate. He can bring it. I will write more on this later - maybe some story about Sir Rants Alot thru the wise eyes of Master Po.

Anyway the funny story from this first year was that ReyQ was informed by me that a new chat had started over at this new place. ReyQ said "Nah I am done....nothing is going to replace the Globe chat".....yeah sure Reyquila... He is still here today...as am I.

It used to be a comfortable corner bar and I had my own barstool and now it's a multimedia event room which is good and I have grown used to it. But I still wax and wane about the Glory Days

More later......breakfast at the Temple is almost ready

I was witness to two important moments in Celticsblog history while in the Globe chatroom which I wonder if Jeff would even remember.

My user name used to be a (now extinct) website address and every now and again, people in the chatroom would check out the site and we'd talk about it in the room.  Jeff obviously liked this idea because one morning, he showed up and had changed his name from "ranter" to "ranter - Celticsblog.net" and greeted us all with "Hmmm...I'm feeling spammish today".  I'm sure that was aroung the time the blog started to take off, so I've always vainly felt a tiny bit responsible.

The other one was when Bill Simmons had been complaining that every time he broke some inside information to his buddies on SOSH, loads of websites would pick up on it and report it as news. Anyway, the next day he broke some news about how (recently signed rookie) Tony Allen had been tearing it in some  pickup games with pro players.  For all I know, he may have made this up just to test whether everyone would re-report it.

Anyway, Jeff shows up and I was the only other guy in the room.  He asked what was new and I told him the story.  He decided that, in respect of Simmons, he wasn't going to report the story and a few other guys showed up and we all decided we were going to keep this to ourselves.  So we spent the next five or ten minutes posting whatever we could - song lyrics, mock shopping lists etc. just so that the TA story scrolled off the page.  It was kind of surreal.

About a minute after it had finally disappeared from view, someone new came in the room.  "Have you heard that story about Tony Allen tearing it up in the pick-up games?"

I'm sure that was a lesson, although I'm not sure exactly what.

That was in the day when you could hide you could log in as anybody and I am not so sure early on we could see IP addresses. Could we? Too much time and liquor has robbed me of my memory and proper use of my thumbs. "I am feeling spammish today" LOL. I am sure I was not in there that day as I was not near the "Slackin Mofo's" (evol) you guys were.

By the way Bentdouble sent me a CD of his music way back then and I was blown away how good it sounded. You obviously lost some skill sets along the way Bent.... ;D

We could see IP addresses.  Don't you remember?  Old fan had the software that would translate the ip address to an actual location and so if there was a troll that was getting out of hand, he'd post their location in the room and say he was sending the cops round.  Never failed to get rid of them.
