shamsnba I am excited to announce I am joining The Athletic and Stadium as the lead Senior NBA Insider/Writer and Analyst later this month. I am so grateful and honored to have spent the past three years at Yahoo. I’m appreciative to have been part of The Vertical and the tremendous staff, top to bottom. Thank you to all of the Yahoo Sports executives, editors Johnny Ludden and Joe Garza and the rest of the group. Now, I am so pumped and thrilled for this next journey and challenge. I’m excited to join the talented people at both The Athletic and Stadium, two places with tremendous enthusiasm, opportunity for growth and determination to cover the league. Both are hungry and ready. So am I.

No Woj and now no Shams. Yahoo sure knows how to bring in the best; it's too bad they can't hold on to them (although Woj was there for like 10 years).

I feel like the majority Sham's and Woj's value are in their tweets, not their articles, I wouldn't be surprised if ESPN and The Atlantic grossly overpaid to get them, Yahoo might actually be making the smart business decision here.  I just don't see those guys driving enough traffic compared to the value of their names.

This is astute, TP. I generate 50% of traffic for my company and i think there’s a good chance your assertion is likely. They may be getting most of their money’s worth right now as Shams looks to be #1 in the game right now and his transition is major news and a good PR / brand awareness play.

But at what price, and why can’t they make money off ads like their competitors? I’m sure the paywall has great profit potential but they haven’t effectively conveyed why their product is worth paying for in a world of mostly free content.

EDIT - Forgot to give the actual TP. Poor form.

The Athletic has been getting some good pulls lately.

They've done an excellent job with their Boston guys;  Jeff Howe, Jay King, Jared Weiss.  There's been some strong writing.

It seems like with all these moves they have something much larger in the hopper.  They have to have something up there sleeve to make the value of all these signings worth it.  Maybe streaming live games.
