TA's dopey and damaged

This pretty much sums it up. I remember this year I believe we were playing Houston and Tony just got back from an injury. He went out and played his ass off and might have been the best player on the court. The next 7 games he looked awful, took bad shots and turned the ball over.

Basically you get 1 good game out of TAllen out of 8. The one word to describe his play is inconsistent. He'll never have the intelligence of a Posey. Just doesn't get it. Always seems to be injured too.

good point wdheeli about Tony taking a long time to mentally come back from injuries.  I'm worried about the same thing.  The times when he is not confident are the times that he really struggles.  While I don't think Tony's basketball IQ is that bad, I do think he is our most fragile player mentally.

Agreed. It's time for Danny to drop the delusion that Tony's ever going to be a sixth-man type wing player. Let's cut the losses and move on.

Tony is just simply too inconsistent to be Celtic 6th man.  Remember, Red built this tradition with the most consistent players he could find to make sure that we always got solid bench production game in and game out.  Tony will just never give you that on a regular basis.

It's a shame.

I agree with the statemtns that soemtimes his Kamakaze drives are out of control and get's the offesnive foul or that he get's burned on back doors because he's too tight on D. I also agree that if we could find a better, more consistent replacement at the two that we should trade Tony probably...or resign him cheap as the 3rd string off guard...

However, we don't have that "better option" yet. Outside of Pierce we don't have anyone who even close to a tough, nails defender at the 2-3 spot. Therefore, I'd make the argument that having him back and healthy for the playoffs will be a huge bonus for us even if it means just having him available to play for 5-8 minutes a game on the "hot wing". He's not perfect but he's the best option we have for this job.

I also really beleive the playoffs are generally decided by the toughest, grind it out guys, defesnive guys on most years. That fits what I call Tony's brawling style of tough physical ball.

Celts, Spurs, Pistons, even the Heat they all have 2-3 of these types on their teams. WE have KG, Rondo, Powe and TA. It's one of the main reasons I think we'll win it again if healthy.

No Tony Allen for me thanks. I rather see Bill Walker out there. He's already better than Tony and he's like 3 inches taller.

Tony wasn't playing that badly for us before he was injured, and he was no worse than the other bench players. I think he frequently tries to do too much on offense, especially when he's out there with House (who isn't a good ballhandler) so having Marbury out there will probably simplify things for him. He might not be a "6th-man type wing player but he's a decent backup.

I am the biggest TA fan on the planet.

Hahaha!! I thought the resigning of TA was going to be the end of your celticsblog career. Glad your self imposed sabatical was short lived.

TA is ok....as a 10th man. He is not a championship level backup 2/3 though. I hope we move his expiring contract this summer.

negatives: He is undersized, can't shoot, is injury prone, gambles too much on defense, turns the ball over too much.

positives: He plays hard, is a decent defender, good penetrator when he can make a straight line to the basket.

I like Bill Walker behind Pierce. He has good small forward size, speed and strength; something Tony Allen can't say. But Walker is too slow, House and Marbury to short and neither a good enough defender to play some back up off guard against soem fo the guys we'll see at that spot in the playoffs. This combined with Ray's mediocre D still makes Allen a nice asset off the bench for spot minutes to hounds the opposign off guards who may be hot.

He is no sixth man but he is a decent specialist that should help us a few times along the pursuit of #18. We need him back, healthy.

He's what we have...I wouldn't mind seeing him moved in the off season if it meant we could bring in better replacement though. As someone said a more consistent one. For the simple fact that it might take JR Giddens all of next season and half of the following to be ready, TA may stick around  next season.

what?

Tony Allen = 6 ft 5 inches
Bill Walker = 6 ft 6 inches

Not trying to hate on Billy Walker, because I like him... But what has he done or proved that makes him "better" than Tony Allen, besides the fact that he averaged 17 points/game in the D-League?

He is listed at 6'4, but I think that is adding an inch to his actual height.

TA is a good role player, but he was picked in the 20s and should have been a future starter... which i think he COULD be but not on this team. I love TA but i think Billy Walker is taking his job.
