Game Notes
The Celtics host the Trailblazers for the first of two games this season.  They will play one more time on Portland on March 23.  These two teams split the series last season 1-1 with each team winning on the road.

The Celtics are 5-5 in their last 10 games and have won 3 straight.  They are 20-8 at home and 14-5 vs Western Conference teams.   The Blazers are 7-3 in their last 10 games and are coming off a loss.  They are 14-13 on the road and 13-9 vs Eastern Conference teams.

The Celtics remain very short handed with Gordon Hayward (ankle), Kyrie Irving (quad), Shane Larkin (knee), Marcus Morris (hip),  and Marcus Smart (hand)  all out.  Greg Monroe may very well make his debut in this game for the Celtics.

For the Trailblazers, CJ Wilcox is out with a knee injury.  Evan Turner is probable with a calf injury.  Shabazz Napier is questionable with a toe injury.

Key Matchups

(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/1626179.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/damian_lillard.png)
Terry Rozier vs Damian Lillard
Terry Rozier will have his hands full guarding Damien Lillard who is averaging 25.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game.  Lillard averaged 28 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 7.0 assists in two games vs the Celtics last season.  Terry Rozier has had 2 big games in his first two starts.  He needs to continue to play well for the Celtics to have a chance in this one.

(http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/1627759.png) vs (http://i.cdn.turner.com/nba/nba/.element/img/2.0/sect/statscube/players/large/cj_mccollum.png)
Jaylen Brown vs CJ McCollum
While Rozier is working to guard Lillard, Brown will have a challenge of his own trying to stay with CJ McCollum, who is averaging 21.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists. Last season McCollum averaged 27.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in two games vs the Celtics last season.   The Celtics will need to play tough defense to try to control Portland's high scoring back court duo.

Keys to the Game
Defense -  Defense is a key to winning every game.  The Celtics have to continue to play tough defense in order to get a win,  especially playing short handed.

Rebound - The Celtics must make an extra effort to grab rebounds in order to give themselves extra possessions as well as to keep the Blazers from cashing in with second chance points.   The Celtics simply must work harder on the boards if they want to win this one.

Be Aggressive -  The Celtics have to be the team that works harder and wants the win more.  They have to dive for loose balls, go for every rebound and just hustle on every play.  They have to be aggressive in getting to the basket as well and not settle for outside shots, especially if they aren't falling.   They need to outwork the Blazers who should be feeling the effects of travel.

X-Factors
Next Man Up - The Celtics have played short handed two games in a row and players have stepped up to fill in the blanks left by injured teammates.  They need to continue to step up and play harder if they want to get a win.

Home Game
- The Celtics are finishing up a 3 game home stand while the Trailblazers are starting a 2 game road trip.  The Celtics should get a boost from the home crowd.

TP for thread but we appear to have a matchup disadvantage at 3 of the 5 starting positions. Only intense defense can overcome this. Cousy always said that you have to be greedy so I expect to win both games.

I am the Bucs fan I have been all my life. I don't like any other team and if he isn't on the Bucs I don't know him other than big name recognition. I don't watch other games and I don't watch the playoffs unless we are in, so that means I haven't since Jesus walked. I only know who wins when family members say it or I hear it from them watching. I don't like the Pats and I would undoubtedly be banned if I said why. That is all, thank you!

Yep. On a side note I love how with the earlier trade dealdine every player who misses a game is all of a sudden being held out because of a trade. The internet is silly sometimes.

With the injury bug going around in the NBA lately, it's best to be cautious.

I think that bothered him a bit and now they are resting him into break, like any smart team would do with their stars.  I think that's just what smart teams do now and find their guys rest.  I think with his knee and shoulder he had a couple issues so just rest up.

It is something that has definitely progressing throughout the year. I could see him turning into a 4-5 apg player in 2 years. His court sight and awareness just keeps getting better and better. That left handed bounce pass to Tayum in transition was a thing of beauty

These shots by Nurkic are not all so easy at all.  Pretty nice post moves and he has a nice push/half hook type shot out to a longer range.

Jaylen’s passing has been nice the past couple games.
It is something that has definitely progressing throughout the year. I could see him turning into a 4-5 apg player in 2 years. His court sight and awareness just keeps getting better and better. That left handed bounce pass to Tayum in transition was a thing of beauty

The thing about it is he doesn't even need to actually be a very good passer to get those numbers because of the type of player Jaylen is slashing to the rim atheltically.  It's in part about being able to draw attention and read the defense and just make the easy pass.  Guys like say Westbrook are not actually that good of passers, they just draw so much attention.  He just needs to relax more than anything.  I think we are seeing it.  But as you said, and I mentioned, the last few games there have been very nice ones like that one to Tatum.

Good pass by Al Theis didn't see coming I guess.  Nice defense by Semi.  The Blazers are going to hit threes, they just need to keep trying to play their game.

Yup.  He still doesn't read the floor all that well a lot of the time, forcing the issue and driving recklessly into traffic, and you can tell that the game is still going a little fast for him at times.  But I love his aggression.

Against Atlanta he also hit a pullup 3 out of a pick and roll, and he's shown to be a good spot up 3point shooter especially from the corners.  With his explosive first step, if he can continue to make those shots and pick his spots better, he's going to be tough to guard.

Personally I do as well but I think it doesn't matter.  With KG it seemed to be that he cared too much to sit there and watch and it bothered him.  It's just a complete non issue.  Kyrie has been great in attitude and mentorship since he got here.  It's something Lou Merloni makes a big deal about.

Like others said, its a non-issue. He was also at a game earlier when he was injured. You don't know the circumstances, for all we know, he was advised to stay at home. Smart's injury is laceration, he doesn't need rest, it will heal up on its own.

I don't think that has actually been the argument against Smart.

At least for me it's far more about Smart's own issues (i.e. off-court stuff, lack of offensive ability, possible cost to re-sign).

Also, it's obvious neither player is starter quality.  Rozier is being asked to play above his pay grade right now with Kyrie out.

Honestly, can't feel too upset. The entire bench is rookies. Rozier has gone understandably cold, let's be honest, he isn't a real point guard in the traditional sense regardless.

Rozier hasn't shot well, but he's been largely responsible to holding Lillard to 1 for 8 shooting and preventing dribble penetration. He has 4 assists, but he could have much more as many of his teammates have missed wide open shots. The Blazers are also one of the better defensive clubs.

Let's just not act as though he hasn't brought anything to the table. If that screen on Al hadn't been called he'd be outscoring Lillard. As it stands now he's got 3 pts to Lillard's 4.

Celtics didn't play a completely horrid half. If they could have held Harkless to 2-4 from three instead of 4-4 and Ojeleye could have hit two of his WIDE OPEN threes instead of going 0-4 and this is a 4 point game. Two bench guys are ghe biggest difference in the game right now.

I can't say I'll be mad if we lose. We're missing 3 of our 7 best players (4 of 8 if you include Monroe) so losing to a good team like the Blazers given the circumstances isn't that bad.

Well, hopefully now we can stop this exaggerated nonsense about Rozier making Smart unnecessary. He's just as inconsistent as ever.

That's the thing with Rozier. You get flashes, but he's so inconsistent at this point. At least with Smart you can count on his defense night in, night out.

Passing is a consistent skill too (although actually Smart did have a bit of a bad stretch with that to be honest lol, but otherwise he's pretty good).

The silver lining about being so shorthanded is that Brown is getting rare PnR reps and some iso plays.  He's looked really good in PnR over the past two games, far better than I would have expected.

He almost always makes he right pass. He's shown some good growth as a playmaker this year.

Where you on outer space when Rozier had that stretch where he shot under 30%? Rozier has had duds like Marcus.

Lol. What's to reread? How can Smart be worse offensively than bad Rozier every game if he has had games where he played better offensively than Rozier? Did you miss the stretch where Rozier averaged 5.5 on 29% shooting while Smart averaged 13 on 46%? How can he be consistently worse than bad Rozier huh kozdolev?

Both of them had putrid games offensively, no way is Rozier consistently better than Smart offensively.

The Celtics are only 0.9 points worse per 100 possessions offensively when Smart is on the floor.

When Rozier is on the floor, the offense is 6.8 points worse.

There is more to offense than just shooting percentages.

Those numbers could be indicative of a lot of things, including who each player shares the court with more often.

My initial guess would be Smart spends more time on the court with Kyrie than Rozier does.

EDIT:  Yep, a quick check at NBA.com shows Smart plays 18 mpg with Kyrie, while Rozier only plays 9 mpg with Kyrie.

He's smart enough to hang around as a role player for a long time at the least.  He is too good of a passer plus he can shoot.

He does a ton for passing and ball movement, plus as a screener.  It won't come across in stats but you gotta aprpeciate it.  Right now he is running the entire show and making it work against a really good team.  As much as I like Kyrie, he is not that strong of a passer (he's especially inconsistent).  Al has to be appreciated.

Tatum still needs to figure out some finishes.  He does some nice ones but a lot of times hoenslty it feels like he's guessing rather than pulling the right quick adjustments and reactions.  That time he could have done one of those long finishes where he leans away but he was already doing a euro when it was clearly being eaten up from the start.  Meanwhile he could have gone more around him.

Is Horford really running point guard???

He's been the play maker for the last 3 games.
And people say he’s not worth his contract...

I was arguing with a guy a while back who said Horford will retire at the end of this contract. Ridiculous. He’s so valuable to our team

How I wish we couldve paired Al with KG.

How I wish we couldve paired Al with KG.

That would have been a truly unbelievable combo.  On defense and pick and roll hard to ever beat with guards who could run things.

KG maybe the best passing big of all time.  This peak Al right here has to be up there though.  Showing a lot.

It has to be disheartening for the Blazers to lead most of this game and not able to finish v. a team averaging 22 years old (sans Horford).

A truly clutch and impressive win.   Kyrie and the Marcus' (and Moose) should be ecstatic watching this.

Beat a good team that played hard minus our best player and at least two rotation players (maybe 3, if you count Monroe). Outstanding clutch play down the stretch.

I have probably played that last HORFORD shot 5 times or more. I love watching the reaction of Marcus Smart after the ball went in. Also he was coaching from the side telling Theis to bring his player out by moving out to the three point line.

You have to love this team !!!!!

Just watched it again and CBS is such a cool customer...he was directing traffic on that last play telling Theis with a subtle gesture to pull his man out to the baseline.

Great, great win.

It’s so hard to beat NBA teams - let alone playoff teams - when you’re as shorthanded as we are right now.  We’re having to rely on kids and fringe NBA players to get it done.

Major props to Horford for his game tonight.  Props to the whole team for strong defense and just enough offense when it mattered.

Where’s the Al is overpaid thread???

That thread should be deleted from existence.  Whoever believes that leads me to question if they watch Al play.

And I'd vote to delete the "Any TR fan left?" thread too.

TBF Rozier didnt really play a good game. Good D and and great play at the end though.

True, and I know some here still aren't enamored of Terry, but we are probably well beyond wondering if he has any fans left.

He got a lot better in the second half.  I'll give him his credit for stepping up.  I don't expect him to be consistently doing as much as he was, he just needs to play aggressively and decisively like that overall with more consistency.

Rozier is one TOUGH kid.

Before he made that real clutch shot with :13 to go. he got bumped real good by Aminu (I think) and he got more determined, got him leaning and rose up and canned the J.

Impressive.

He grew up eating ranch dressing, sugar, and spaghetti sandwiches and still became an NBA player.  Tough indeed.

I sat down to a huge breakfast as the game came on, fired down a few cups of coffee, and really enjoyed the first 2.5 quarters. Then as I watched the Blazers fumble the lead (and eventually the game) away, I could only sit there and think of how fired up Boston sports fans must be about Tatum and Brown. It’s too bad Boston sports only enjoys about 90% success. They’re so close to gobbling up other 10%.

Nice. Really am enjoying the development of Brown and Tatum.

Loved this game..

Yes AL was masterful and Man watching the J's was so fun for stretches... With that said..

Huge game for Rozier... The biggest of the 3 in my opinion..   He had a super tough matchup with No backup point guard, against a tough team who was looking for redemption after getting blasted in their last game...

Terry only had 1 Turnover for the game and down the stretch, in a tough game, he was there making plays... The Moxy this kid plays with is incredible...

Rozier is a quality starter in this league.. If nothing else he has proven that..   We are lucky to have him.

Best win of the season given the circumstances!!

Houston was best win of the year.  They were down 26 in that game.

I assume the poster must be talking about Boston's dominance in all four major North American sports leagues.  Boston is the only city this millennium to win titles in all four.

He was making a sarcastic comment about how successful Boston sports have been.

Basically saying we've been so successful that the bar is so high that even when having more success than anyone we still expect even more.

I guess, but it's still kind of odd. The Bruins and the Sox haven't been all that great over the last several years.

Both have been playoff teams. The Bruins are one of the best in their Conference. The Red Sox won their division.

It may feel like disappointments, but to many cities those are very successful seasons.

True.

And it also assumes every sports fan in the area actually roots for all four.  I don't even care about baseball, and I'm a Giants fan in football.  Only root for the Bruins and Celtics for Boston teams.

thats his point, really.

The Red Sox win back to back AL East titles and we just brush it aside as a pretty mediocre season.

93 wins and a division championship in one of the tougher divisions in baseball is a let down for the 3rd best team in this city.

I mean, the Bruins and the Red Sox are good this year, but they've been stuck in a rut for several years. The Red Sox in particular have been pretty putrid despite their bloated payroll. I mean, I understand we have it way above average, but I think 90% is pushing it a little bit.

I'll take a Superbowl, Stanley Cup, and NBA title this year, though. 75% is not as good as 90% but pretty close ;)

I remember enjoying winning a lot in Florida a while back now, we were killing it in the pros and college. I remember it being something like the bucs, FSU/FL/UF (can't remember who and when exactly but it was multiple college sports), lightning, Heat and more but I can't really remember all the teams and chips won but it was less than a decade. Early 2000s.
