Eh ...

1 - Why does it matter? The vast majority of titles on both sides were won before the shot clock, let alone the 3 pointer, were invented.

During my lifetime, the Lakers have won 6 titles while the Celts have won 1.  During my time as an avid fan of the NBA, the ratio is 3-1.

That's the disparity that matters to me.

2 - Even if we decide to care about overall title counts, most of the Lakers ones shouldn't count and I think most people who aren't super casual understand that.  Even the Lakers apparently didn't start counting the Minnesota titles until after the Magic era.

I want to see the Celtics succeed and the Lakers fail.  Even better if the former comes as a result of the latter.

That said, the Lakers have inherent advantages over the Celtics and they always will.  I think if you decide to see the success of one franchise as having an intrinsic relationship to the success of the other, you're guaranteeing that you will be disappointed and not fully appreciate the success the Celtics do enjoy.

It's pretty much guaranteed that the Lakers are going to win a lot more often than the Celtics.  Look at the last decade.  The Lakers were an appalling caricature of an NBA franchise, piling mistake on scandal on bad luck.  Yet they still end up with a title because NBA superstars love to play in LA.

Move the Celts to Miami or LA.  Then we can sign the next Lebron and AD will demand a trade there.

We have an amazing young core with Tatum, Brown and Smart who have already been to 2 ECFs in their first 3 years together. They have 10+ years of contending ahead of them. I look forward to seeing them go head to head against the Lakers over the next few years while Lebron is still relevant. We'll be fine.

To be fair I started paying attention to the league relatively late in life (i.e. not until college).

Tell that to Celticsblog, might as well trade everyone based on the whining.

Funny enough, for me the ratio is also 3-1. But I've seen the Lakers win 3 titles in my lifetime. The three between 2000-2002 I have no memories of as I was only like 2-3 years old at the time lol so I had no clue at that point about anything  :P

Celtics just have to win one next season.

I gotta say, though, this makes that 2010 loss sting all over again.

The Final quarter of Game 7 was just so brutal.  Like watching a person slowly bleed out.

That was awful, and one of the worst-refereed quarters in NBA history.

Plus, if that game went the other way, we're still ahead of the Lakers, 18-16.

Yeah me either, I won't do that to myself.

So the Lakers now have 17 titles including 5 from Minneapolis. After reading through various articles on arguments for and against counting the 5 Minneapolis titles together with the 12 Los Angeles banners, I came across a very interesting tidbit. The man responsible for giving Minny its 5 titles, Gerorge Mikan, has yet to have his number retired by the Lakers (i think there are other Minny players from that era that deserve their numbers retired too). Anybody know the reason for this?
