don't they almost have to. Otherwise the Butler trade looks awful. They also were looking at signing him at 16 million a year so another 4 isn't a ton.

Not really. Markkanen looks like a keeper — you don’t need to match bad contracts just because you trade for him.  It does give OKC two days to negotiate with Chicago for a Melo salary dump, as if Chicago matches, that trading partner is gone.

Absolutely not.  The Butler trade is what it is.  Significantly overpaying to re-sign LaVine isn't going to make it better.  What it would do is eliminate their opportunity to use their cap space for salary dump trades to get some additional picks.
