Does Utah want to be stuck with Conley through 2021?

Jazz have made offer to Grizzlies for point guard Mike Conley

As the trade deadline approaches, the Utah Jazz have made an offer to the Memphis Grizzlies involving Ricky Rubio and a 2019 first round pick for point guard Mike Conley, The Salt Lake Tribune has learned.

The Grizzlies didn’t immediately accept the offer, though considered it in the context of other offers that they’ve been getting for Conley from other teams around the league. Memphis says they’ve received offers including better first round picks than the Jazz’s — currently slated to be the No. 19 pick — from teams around the league. One team reportedly also interested in Conley is the Detroit Pistons, sources said.

As a result, the Jazz may have to weigh whether or not to include additional picks or assets if they choose to acquire Conley before Thursday’s trade deadline.

Conley is averaging 20.2 points per game this season on 43.3 percent shooting from the field and 35.9 percent shooting from 3-point range. He also averages 6.3 assists per game.

The 31-year old Conley is owed $30.5 million this season, $32.5 million next season, and $34.5 million in 2020-21. Rubio, though, is owed just $14.9 million for this season before his contract expires at the end of June.

The NBA requires that incoming and outgoing salaries are within certain percentages of each other for teams operating over the cap. For the Jazz to make up the difference between Conley’s and Rubio’s salary, the team would have to add in just over $9 million in salary to any deal. Derrick Favors ($16.9 million) or Dante Exum ($9.6 million) would do the trick.

Perhaps most likely, though, is an assortment of players that includes Thabo Sefolosha’s deal ($5.2 million), plus any two of the following low salaried players that add up to more than $4 million: Ekpe Udoh ($3.3 million), Raul Neto ($2.1 million), Grayson Allen ($2.0 million), Tony Bradley ($1.6 million), or Georges Niang ($1.5 million).

Detroit currently has the ninth pick. I can't see them giving that up for Conley.

update for this week

Standings as of 1/31/19

Memphis pick tied #6 --  (protected top 8 )
Games Behind    Current Wins   Games Left   Last 10
Memphis               ---                    20                   30              1-9
Orlando                 +0.5                  20                   31              3-7

--> Memphis 'gained' another half game on the Magic for that #7 slot.  Washington has finally put some distance between them and Memphis.  looks like Memphis will be jockeying with Orlando for the 6 and 7 spots going into the lottery.  good news for the carryover people.  bad news for those who want the pick this year.

Kings pick -- #13 -- (protected if top 1 - becomes Sixer pick if #1)
Games Behind    Current Wins     Games Left    Last 10
MIami                       1                       24                      33               5-5
Minnesota                  1                       25                     31               5-5
Sacramento             ---                     26                      31               6-4
LA Lakers                  ---                     26                      31               4-6

-> Kings seem to be locking into the 12-14 draft slot now in a battle with Minny and the Lakers.  Lakers may pull away when Lebron returns.   Taking the approach now of giving up on Sac dropping into the 7-9 pick range --> gambling that my hopes for their failure were supporting them and now that I'm resigned to their success, they'll now disappoint me in that  regard.

Clipper Pick #18   --  (protected  top 14)
Games Behind    Current Wins     Games Left    Last 10
Brooklyn                  0.5                     28                      30                 8-2
LA Clippers              ---                    28                      31                 4-6
Utah                         +0.5                  29                      30                 8-2
San Antonio              +1.5                  30                      30                 6-4

-->  Clips  clinging to that last playoff spot which is the best we can hope for if the pick conveys.   Brooklyn's gotten hot and almost passed them in the standings.  Not seeing any other Eastern playoff teams catching them so our best possibility for this conveying is looking like #17.

Boston Pick #23
Games Behind    Current Wins     Games Left    Last 10
Portland                0.5                    32                     30                 7-3
Boston                  ---                    32                     31                 7-3
OKC                     +0.5                  32                     32                 7-3
Indiana                +0.5                   32                     32                 5-5
Philadelphia           +1                     33                     31                 6-4

-->C's slid back one to #23 this week.  They're right in a cluster where standings could swing quickly if a team has a good or bad (particularly bad) week.  Indiana's dropped back to the pack without Oladipo and Philly's just muddling through.

Second Rounders:
Boston (protected 31-55)

Second rounders
Boston - #53

I've given up on the Clippers pick now that LeBron is back. Once Clips lose the last spot, they drop down to 14 and it doesn't convey. Sux.

I like this draft. The first 20 to 22 picks is all solid players. New Orleans will have talent if they want it with the kings and clippers picks

lebron is not that good

He is not the same player that can carry a garbage team to the playoffs on his own, especially in the west

He is alone on the lakers. He won't be able to do it this time. Clips are deep

They have to make up only 1 game in 30 games of play.

LA Clippers record over the last two months is: 13-18.

So I also think it's a lost cause. And a pretty significant one.

update for this week

Standings as of 2/7/19

Memphis pick --  #6 --  (protected top 8 )
Games Behind    Current Wins   Games Left   Last 10
Memphis               ---                    22                   27              3-7
Orlando                 +0.5                  22                   28              3-7
Washington           +0.5                   22                   28              4-6

--> Memphis had a 'good' week and stayed close to Orlando and Washington lost some ground to them.  Even if Memphis passed them in the standings, they'd still only climb to the 8 spot and the pick carries over.  Take that as good or bad news depending on whether you want the pick this year.

Kings pick -- #14 -- (protected if top 1 - becomes Sixer pick if #1)
Games Behind    Current Wins     Games Left    Last 10
Sacramento             ---                     28                      28               5-5
LA Lakers                  +1                     27                      28               4-6

-> Kings still not calling it quits this season - fighting to make the playoffs.   still scratching my head how they're ahead of other Western teams that have better rosters on paper like Minny, Lakers, NO and the wonder kids in Dallas.

Clipper Pick #18   --  (protected  top 14)
Games Behind    Current Wins     Games Left    Last 10
Sacramento                1.5                   28                      28               5-5
LA Clippers               ---                    30                      27                 6-4
Utah                           +1                   31                      27                 7-3
San Antonio               +1.5                  32                      26                 6-4

-->  Clips  still clinging to that last playoff spot which is the best we can hope for if the pick conveys.   Sac's still in the chase for that last spot which would be a real kick in the teeth if they pass them --> Kings pick becomes non-lottery and jumps a few more spots due to weak playoff teams in the East and Clips pick doesn't convey

Boston Pick -- tied #25 with Indiana
Games Behind    Current Wins     Games Left    Last 10
Philadelphia            1                      34                     28               6-4
OKC                      0.5                    34                     29                8-2
Indiana                 ---                     35                     28                6-4
Boston                 ---                     35                     28                9-1

-->As mentioned last week, standings could change radically in just a week and they did.  Right now, if C's lost a coin flip with Indy for the draft position, the C's draft position worsened 3 spots in just a week.   If rooting for them in the standings, next closest team to them is Denver who may be making an appearance on this board next week.

Second Rounders:
Boston (protected 31-55)

Second rounders
Boston - #55/6

TP for keeping us up-to-date. All that happened this week is really bad for our pick watch.

Regarding the Grizzlies pick I think the thing to worry about is even if they slide to 7 or 8 1 or 2 teams after them could win the lottery and jump into the first 4 slots therefore pushing the Grizzlies pick to 9 or 10.

I'm officially giving up on the SAC pick.

It may make me a quitter, but I feel like a giant weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I highly recommend it.

Onto Memphis. Trade Gasol and Conley!
