Title: The Young Pope
Post by: Eja117 on July 27, 2017, 10:44:35 PM
starring Jude Law as .....a very young Pope in the modern age.  By HBO.

Sorta like Game of Thrones for Catholics.

I've never seen a show quite like this.

Mixed feelings.

the wife and I watched it, but we aren't Christian's and we really enjoyed it.  We thought a lot of it would not sit overly well with Catholics, specifically, but even a lot of Christian's as it takes a very interesting view of the Church and faith in general.

I watched maybe an episode and a half when it first started.  I couldn't get into it.  It didn't seem believable, and for some reason I felt the need for more plausibility for this one.

It centers and is actually pretty good as long as their view on the Church doesn't bother you.

I feel like it goes back and forth between excellent and horrid. But it's compelling. I sorta can't look away. Even at its worst it's still an ok "what if"

I feel the same way. There are some brilliant moments and ideas. But there's also a sense that the show doesn't really know where it's going. It circles back at times to things I feel it's already covered and moved on from.

started watching it when it was first broadcast.  gave it a few episodes to see if it would get any better but my wife and I found it awful.

Aha....remember that song the Greenland prime minister gave him  ...called something like "Without a reason" or something like that?   Growth is a theme

I did some reading on the analysis of this show and it turns out this show may be very popular with Catholics, but people aren't really sure why. It seems to me a ton of them may have started watching out of curiosity and then sorta couldn't look away because it was like watching a train wreck, but then the show and characters started evolving and now they're into it.

Experts say the film is largely plausible and that it's clear the writers/directors absolutely know what they're doing and are very knowlegable about the subject matter. They state the most unrealistic aspect is the way the show depicts the Pope as having tons of free time, and that's just not the case at all, but that a lot of the politics and conversation and personalities and issues are plausible.

Hmmm... I guess the show could be intentionally mimicking the lead character's inability to move on past certain personal hangups. It's just not enjoyable for me to watch him circle backward so repeatedly without it also pushing something else forward.

I find the character's more hardy traits to be fascinating (stubborn, yet innovative, skilled and flawed). But his emotional weakness is not as interesting to me, though it is probably more realistic to a character with his background.

Well when you look at the part where he's an orphan it seems to be informing his leading of the church. He wanted his parents more than anything and it not being able to have them makes him want them worse than anything and not take them for granted. So he's showing people when you can't just take the church for granted it will make them more mysterious and more desirous of the church and him.
He knows what it's like to be excommunicated for nothing so he doesn't mind excommunicating someone for something. He's just a totally different character
