Title: Where's the best (and worst) places you ever traveled?
Post by: Eja117 on April 25, 2011, 07:48:32 AM
Someone asked this and it's totally valid for its own thread.

Good places in no order
Lithuania
Warsaw
Riga
Tallin Estonia
Chicago
NYC
Dover NH.....DO NOT underestimate DOVER New Hampshire!
North Carolina
Slovakia
Most of France
Washington DC
Orlando
Kentucky. Nice trees and restaurants
Missouri ...the food bars that cost like $3 and make you obese overnight alone are worth it
Boston/Concord/Lexington/Salem/Cambridge
Dublin
Montreal
Newport RI (mansions)
East Middlebury VT...specifically..the Waybury Inn...where they filmed the exteriors for Newhart.
Gettysburg
San Francisco....especially Muir Woods
Honolulu area
Seattle
Antietam
Harper's Ferry WV
Bath
Stonehenge
Windsor Castle

Places that disappointed
Helsinki......boringest....place....on....Earth
Maui
Minnesota
Philly
London ...fine. It just doesn't reach the hype and there was trash everywhere
Copenhagen...liked some of it. Very walkable and quieter than lots of cities

Arizona.....eh. It was ok. Decent. Tombstone was good. Grand Canyon was ok

LA....eh. It wasn't great. Amazed this place gets so much attention. Like a big warm New Jersey.

Tijuana Mexico.....it was ok back in the early 90s, but it in the new edition of Star Wars Ben Kenobi is going to say "Mos Eisley space port. You will never find a more reched hive of scum and villainy." And Luke will say "Not even Tijuana?"  and Ben will say "No. It's not as bad as Tijuana of course. Nowhere is that bad. I'm a freakin Jedi master and even I wouldn't go to Tijuana. I meant of the places you could actually go to". Absolute exhibit #1 on my "if there's a palm tree, just don't go" theory. Somalia is #2. Not that I've been to Somalia

The Florida keys. I only got about half way down, but still.

Ohio.  Once you get past all the people with one tooth that don't speak English and are ugly as Yoda on a bad day (the Ohio State fans) it's a pretty nice place.   Actually. That was just a dig at Ohio State fans.  Go STATE!  Never graduate.

Even when discarding feelings influenced by the sports rivalries, I think NYC and LA are two of the best AND worst places to visit. Vegas is a distant second in this category.

I love visiting Boston, Portland (ME and OR), Miami, and Seattle.

When I was in the Army, I did some training in places I would never want to return, but for the most part, that was due to the training grounds, not the region. I can't really think of a place I hate to go. Maybe I need to get out more.

Best:
The Gold Coast, Brisbane Australia - Tropical, beach surfer community on the Northern Coast of Australia, near the Great Barrier Reef.  Everyone gets out of work at 4 pm, drinks until 1am.

Worst:
New Orleans - I know a lot of people love this place, but I found the city to be ugly, dirty and everything smelled like p--- and stale beer.  Too many people who cannot hold their liquor.  Not my kind of thing.

I loved Paris, however cliche that may be. The Eiffel Tower was amazing. Rome and Italy in general wasn't as exciting for me. Just didn't impress me for some reason.

haha, Dover NH?  How come?  I lived in Portsmouth (just moved to Kittery), so have been to Dover many times, and have played ball there on occasion..... but why the Dover love?  Most of my recent Dover visits have been to take my kids to the Children's Museum.

Best place I have ever traveled was to Tanzania and Kenya.  It is just absolutely incredible to see the animals in their natural environment.  It really is exactly like the nature films.

However, I traveled there before 9-11, and at a time when Kenya's government was a bit more stable, so I am not sure I would have the same experience going back...

I also am not ashamed to say I am a sucker for Disneyworld.

Worst is a little tougher, since I just like traveling in general, and most bad experiences have less to do with the actual place, and more to do with individual experiences.  If I had to say someplace though, I would go with Philly.  Just an uglier version of Boston.

Good shopping and chain restaurants!   Granted I'm not sure I'd want to be there in winter, unless I'm skiing somewhere nearby

I agree with Chris...I have never been to a "worst" place, but have had lots of "bests".   Any problems I have had have been more to do with "who" rather than what or where.  Flew to Ireland with my family(my mom and four siblings) with a tour group...less than a month after 9/11.   Swore I would never go on another tour (although I had the best time with my family, and the Irish people were wonderful, some on the tour were downright nasty!)

Hard to beat Costa Rica. Holland and Austria were quite amazing.

As far as bad, I was in Oakland and pulled off the exit looking for a gas station and turned down the wrong street late evening. Not really the best place to be driving a nice rental car wearing a suit...I'd list that as the worst place.

I agree with you.  Never really went to a 'worst' place on a trip but went to some places I liked more than others.
Great places:
Germany -- the Rhine, Black Forest, Lake Constance and Alps areas. Hope to get back to see more of that country some day.
Spain -- southern coast including trips to Gibraltar and Morocco (one of the best meals I've ever had in my life was in a hidden restaurant in the alleys of Tangiers).
Nova Scotia -- probably not your cup of tea if you don't like scenery and relaxation.
North Carolina -- Atlantic Beach section.
Bermuda -- love the scooters, beaches and snorkeling.

Key West went with my girlfriends family was a lot of fun stayed at her grandfathers manison on the beach and was an amazing place. The view was amazing waking up to it everyday. Well thanks for reading!

Had to be in Philly this weekend and I agree with this description but not sure if I would use uglier or simply dirtier--some great architecture but [dang] clean the place up.

Favorite place not mentioned Ottawa.

My 2 favorite places to go are actually here in the U.S.

The first is a small, coastal town in Maine called Harpswell. My family owns a small cottage in the middle of nowhere that's right on the ocean, it's paradise. There are natural springs everywhere and all the seafood you can eat just a 10 foot walk from the backdoor.

Second is Joshua Tree. I always camped on the east coast and loved it. But in the last few years i've gone to Joshua Tree a couple of times and absolutely loved it.

I don't really like going to big cities on vacation. I grew up in a big city and got my fill of it.

If I could travel anywhere I would love to go to Greece, Italy, Spain, France, Great Britain and Australia. Maybe when the kids are out of school and playing for the Red Sox/Pats/Celtics w/e :P

*EDIT** oooh I got my 100th TP overnight XD

There's too many places for me to list without it just being a list of everywhere I've been, and that would be stupid.  So instead I'd say the place that I expected the least from and got the most out of was Prague, in the Czech Republic.

Didn't know anything about the place before I went but the City is like something out of a fairytale.  The city is beaming with beautiful architecture which is hundreds of years old and largely survived WWII (unlike many other European cities,) they've got great food, great beer, absinthe bars, fantastic museums, beautiful squares, and unique monuments and statues.  They've also got great music clubs, dancing clubs and bars, and lots of stuff to do on the more mild tourist attraction side of things.  The people are very friendly and best of all it's one of the cheaper places you can visit in Europe.  I spent 11 amazing days there a few years ago and I've been dying to go back every since.

The best are 2 places in Queensland, Australia:

1. Fraser Island

2. Whitsunday Islands

Just absolutely incredible places and I'm shocked that I didn't know about them until a friend went abroad and told me about them and shocked in general that you never hear about these places

Our stay was in Malaga....Which is beautiful and fun.  Our travel agency took a group of us on a boat to Morocco to shop for rugs.  Our tour guide in Morocco was filthy and smelly and told us to keep our heads down as we walked from the bus to the markets.  Those of us who didn't buy rugs were followed, harrassed, and intimidated by the merchants.  Fortunately, one of the people in our group was a big ex-professional wrestler and got in between those of us being harrassed and the merchants.  The rug shop was nice.  But the rest of where we were at was filthy and very unfriendly.

If I ever get around to doing a "bucket list" Australia and New Zealand will be on it.  In the meantime, I love short junkets in the U. S.  Going to NH (I live in FL) in June. Hoping to get to Puerto Rico (never been there) on a short 4 day cruise with a friend in July or August, and maybe this will be the year I get to Winfield, Kansas in September.  (If I do, I hope to meet Master Po!)  And, Edgar, I am a big amusement park lover...don't even need kids for an excuse, although they are welcome too!  Disney, Busch Gardens, Universal, Sea World...I may never grow up.

Best: Rio de Janeiro, probably the most beautiful place I've ever been.  Weather was gorgeous despite my going during their winter, and beautiful women in abuncdance  ;D.  People were also really friendly, inspired me to try and learn portuguese.  nearly everywhere you look is either water or mountains.

Worst: New Haven Connecticut, went to school there, yea.

Worst Place: Naples, Italy. Someone once described it to me as a snaphot of the Bronx in the late 70's...Very sketchy place, felt very unsafe. Awesome pizza though--Neopolitan style pizza is a crust that has no yeast, but self rises through "good" bacteria--that fact + the water in Naples gives it it's unique flavor, along with the fact that their fresh cheeses are amazing. Just sayin'.

Rome is good and bad--also a very sketchy place, but is a huge city, much like Paris, that takes weeks to truly explore

Arcadia, Florida. Had to travel through there when I lived in Sarasota. It was the worst place ever to break down in a very creepy "Deliverance" type of way.

Best Places: Paris!! A truly magical city with so much history, culture and almost too big to explore. The public transportation is fantastic making it fun to get from point a to b.

London. Not as magical to me as Paris, but equally large and great to explore on foot and by the tube. WAAAY too expensive for us on the US Dollar, though.

Puerto Morelos, Mexico. A sleepy town 25 minutes outside of Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula. Not too touristy, amazing beaches, good indigenous food that won't make you sick and is very close to Chichen Itza.

Portland, Maine. Amazing restaurants, small city, ocean views, lots of history, great music & art scene and a wonderful place to live (lived there for 15 years before moving to Boston)

Can't count Boston, as I feel a bit biased.

This is an interesting thread, but I am sure most people are just posting all the places they have been to - still interesting, though.

In Europe, my favorite place is Madrid. It is everything Paris is without the attitude. It is a vibrant, cultural city with a great subway, as well as being very pedestrian. I could easily see myself living there. London and Paris are probably 2nd or 3rd.

In North America, it's hard not to vote for Manhattan, but a less obvious place that I really enjoy (especially in the summer) is Montreal - it's a little gritty, but I love that you just have to drive a few hours to feel like you are in Europe. I also think that DC, Vegas, and Florida (from Orlando down) are great places.

The worst is probably Tijuana - I just felt really unsafe, the police made us empty my pockets on the streets for no reason, and we didn't even need to show anybody id to walk in - weird. I am also not crazy about Alabama, the cities of Connecticut (Bridgeport, Hartford, and New Haven) or Cincinnati.

Best place isn't available anymore as it was Aruba circa 1978.  There were about 4 hotels/casinos on the island at that time and it was beautiful, non-touristy and inexpensive. The native Arubans were fantastic -- bright, English-speaking (and French), and exploring the island was facinating. Haven't been since, but I know it's much busier now.

Worst:  Tacoma, Washington.  I went there on a business trip for a company I worked for in the early 80's.  I kept hearing how beautiful 'The Mountain' is (Mount Ranier).  But, in 7 seven days, the gray that settles over the area never lifted, and I never once was able to see 'The Mountain'.  And I don't think seeing would have really made a difference.

The Museum of Glass in Tacoma is a real gem. Of course, it wasn't around in the early 80s, so you couldn't have seen it.

Other than David Bowie opening the Tacoma Dome, there's probably not much else going for Tacoma in the 80s.

Oh wow! I didn't know Roy was from the area? Portland is such a relaxed, approachable city that is so easy...driving, parking, walking, eating, drinking--you just don't have to worry about much. It's hip and lives up to the hype--small town with big city feel. I first moved there for college in the early 90's and it was a much different place--way before it hit the "Top City to Live" lists from various publications that its known for now. There were actually more bars, less contrived Irish Pub garbage, and lots of places to see live music. A lot of B-list bands trekked through there and you were able to see them in the most intimate settings you could think of. Ahhh, the good ole days!

There is a state park in eastern Pennsylvania called Ricketts Glen. It has Y formed by the two stream. If you are willing to make the complete trip of 7 miles there are 22 waterfalls unblemished by man. At night you can stay in the campground next to the lake and enjoy the peace of the mountains.

worst place-anyplace where there is someone trying to get money out of you every second of the day.

Best Places,

Innsbruck Austria. Picture perfect city surrounded by the alps..amazing and the train ride from Zurich to Innsbruck was just as amazing.

Basle and Zurich Switzerland were beautiful as well. Some of the best food I have ever had

Warsaw, Krakow, Wroclaw are all beautiful and it is amazing to see thousands of people walking about at midnight, Christmas time in downtown Warsaw and none appear to be frozen like I was after 10 seconds! Remember, Warsaw is Commonly incorrectly known as Warsaw. Phonetically, this is pronounced Varshava. and good luck saying the correct prounouciation of Wroclaw...it is Frotswaf

Venice, Italy but not in the touristy places- the off the beaten path places are amazing and if you know the local, amazing eateries, you will feel like you died and went to heaven when you experience the food and wine.

Dubrovnik, Croatia- amazing fortress city that you can actually walk on top of. The harsh reality of the war is still visible though on outskirts but the city is breathtaking nonetheless

Bermuda- Hard to complain about colorful homes and pink sandy beaches. People were very friendly- You know the people are great when you cab driver takes you to a local bar and you discover how great a few Dark And Stormy(Dark Rum and Ginger Beer..yummy) drinks are and then he later invites you to a party at a club with his friends.

Hawaii.. To me it was Bermuda on steroids...walking near a volcano, miles of incredible beaches, favorite isolated island is Kauai- Hard to complain on that trip on any island we visited

Live in Wine Country, CA..not a bad place to call home for the past few years..very picturesque, almost like an Italian town with wineries everywhere. When you can walk to a winery from your home, life is good

Vegas for first 24 hours

La Jolla, Santa Monica near Montana Street, San Fran, Laguna, Santa Barbara are all great beach towns..for Rustic, quaint gems..try Northern California drive along pacific coast up to Mendocino....amazing drive..amazing, quaint, beautiful town in the middle of nowhere...pine trees, sand and ocean are a great combination too!

Montreal, Canada is a very beautiful, clean city. I loved all visits to that city when I was a teenager

Worst Places,

Was not crazy about the suburbs of PA- Those toll roads should be outlawed! If you drive without GPS, you will get lost..guaranteed

Vegas after the first 24 hours are over

The drive from Dallas Texas to El Paso...OMG...get ready to not see one food place for hours and hours with nothing to view on a flat road that makes you think you have literally gone to Hell! That was a brutal drive during my cross country journey. Keeping your eyes open is close to impossible on that drive. When you get to NM border, you will never be so happy to see a mountain

El Paso, TX...avoid it at all costs...should have never stayed a night there on my journey across the United States...the best thing was leaving

Detroit, Michigan..my sister lives there and despite that, it is not a place I want to visit again..ever! Escaping over the border was nice though to Canada- The people were nice in Detroit though just not my cup of tea

Mayan Ruins on Yucatan Peninsula was not the best experience ever..even with mosquito spray we literally got attacked by thousands of monster flies and mosquitoes..Imagine covering yourself in honey and then walking into a bee farm..Get the picture?

One of the best places surprisingly was Minnesota (Minneapolis). The Mall of America is Sick! and there downtown area isn't too bad also.

Hollywood (Los Angeles, Culver City, Santa Monica etc...) I love being in Cali, just too darn expensive. If you ever make it out ther hit up a outdoor club called "SkyBar"  :o I believe its on Sunset Blvd.

New York City!!!! :-* whats to be said? lol Love it all (countless cab drivers, sirens, crowded streets and even the funk of the air) lol

Paris has to be número 1 for everybody. After Paris, Im partial to Venice, Istanbul, Rome, New York, Toronto, Atlanta, Buenos Aires, Monaco, Budapest. Worst place Ive ever visited: notwithstanding the history, and I mean history of that city, I was depressed by how dirty the city of Athens, Greece was when I visited it.

Barranquilla Colombia is number 1 place...the ladies are knockouts!

Worst, Probably the Salton Sea in CA.  It smells like death, and has 1000's of dead rotting fish along the banks of the lake, the temperature is 120, and the fish die of lack of oxygen in the large shallow body of water as the wind and heat do their dirty work.

South Africa is not a place I'd recommend unless you know people there, or can afford to hire a tour / guide.

I was in the Jo-burg area.  It's a fairly dangerous city (every house in the city, including in the suburbs, has an 8-foot safety wall / gate to keep out drifters and burglars), and the public transit system isn't very good.  From what the locals told me, there are lots of car-jackings of taxis (including by taxi drivers) and the busses are death traps.  Not a good scene.  Thus, why it's good having somebody there to drive you around (we had my brother's in-laws).

So, yeah, safety isn't great.  However, the rest of it was very cool.  It's an absolutely beautiful country, and some of the wildlife-oriented activities you can do are phenomenal.  My favorite was a lion park, where you drive around and lions literally attack your car.  It was crazy.  We went to a monkey park, too, where we were walking on a suspension bridge which was probably 300 feet above the ground, straight out of Indiana Jones.  While we're crossing that, monkeys are trying to get on our shoulders, etc.

The food is great:  lots of beef, steak, burgers, etc.  It's very Americanized in that regard.  The locals -- at least, the ones descended from the British -- seemed cool.  Lots of drinking and sports and carrying on.

I don't know, it's hard to sum up, but it's a place I would totally go back to, but again, I'd have to be hosted.  I hear Cape Town is nicer than Jo-burg, so that's another option I'd probably check out.

Hey, if you're ever going, I can put you in touch with my brother (who currently lives there).

I always try to make the best of wherever I travel

I also always tend to find the scariest parts of the placest I travel

Places I've enjoyed immensely: London, Seattle, Vancouver, Washington DC

Scariest places I've ended up: In Philadelphia we got a tip that there was a great place to grab food and beers on the outskirts of town (near the convention center) we walked - dumb move - we witnessed one person passed out on the sidewalk and another carrying a cash register over his head - we took a cab back

In Vancouver we ended up on Hastings Street.  Luckily it was before dusk, because the people were all strung out even at 4pm....scary scary street full of drugged out people

and finally - Walked from the strip in vegas to the old downtown at night - not the best move - the increase in number of pawn shops and payday loan places should have tipped us off - we did walk by a bar with parking for drunk of the month...

I can`t think of a realy bad place ....
I didn`t like that much Budapest. The irony is that the best restaurant i`ve ever eaten it there (cafe kor don`t miss it !!!!)

It's a little difficult for me to put a degree on magical, but swimming in the natural hot springs in January, while it was snowing on my head was an amazing experience.  The dusky, grey color of the sky during the few hours of light during that time of year was beautiful.  The sudden wind gusts that traveled through the streets of Rejkavik were exhilarating.

We were only there for about three days, and we never left Rejkavik, but it is definitely a place that I want to go back to and spend more time exploring.

You can use Icelandair to go to Europe. I believe they have this system where u can have a layover in Iceland for up to 7 days without any extra fees. Basically, on ur way to France, u can stop by Iceland, enjoy for a few days, then continue to France. 2 for 1 deal.

Best travel experience: Key West

I've been mostly everywhere along the East Coast. From Maine to Florida, by plane train and automobile. The best I've seen is Key West.

It's touristy, and that kinda sucks. Bring money. Bring so much money. My wife (then GF) and I spent about 3 grand all things considered (probably closer to 4 actually) in the course of a week when including lodging (rented a condo for a week, best idea ever, $900). There are two things you must do while there that won't be in any guidebook:

1) Take the fast boat to the Dry Tortugas, and bring or rent snorkel gear. Amazing coral reefs, amazing fish, amazing straight out of Pirates of the carribean historical tour. I could've spent a week there, but since it was a military fort and prison, that might have been in poor choice. Im 100% sure it's haunted.

2) Rent a car, it MUST BE A CONVERTIBLE. Drive from Key West to Homestead Florida. Homestead sucks, but there is a place there called 'Robert Is Here'. It's a fruit stand that specializes in central and South American fruits that they grow on site. Get smoothies, preferably 2, one drank on-site, one drank on the way home. It's 100 miles of bridges weaving among the keys each way, and you should stop for meals coming and going along the way at a place with a waterfront view. Always get fresh fish. Maybe it's because I was 25 years old and in love, but I've never known a better time.

Key West Positives: Historical stuff, beaches , great nightlife, friendly people (AS LONG AS YOU BRING MONEY), more booze than John Daly could shake a empty vodka bottle at, and no open containers laws.

Lots of best places...usually the first time I go Anywhere.

A few worst places...usually on the way to the best places,  ;) .  For example, we are now on a trip, are in Winfield Kansas presently, at a bluegrass festival.  The trip here was wonderful...we drove from Clearwater, Florida stopping to see friends on the way.  In Louisiana we missed a turn and ended up on 7 miles of dirt road to get back to our "chosen route"...and after three miles noticed a swarm(?) of huge black spiders crossing the road!  That had to be one of the worst places...sort of like being in a horror movie!  I advise you to stay away from dirt roads in Louisiana.

I've been to Alabama. I remember it fondly, but I'm not sure it holds a candle to anywhere else on that list except for Detroit.

Tennessee has an incredible amount of music history if you're into that sort of thing.

LA is worth visiting if only to get a grasp on just how much of American culture comes from there. It's pretty incredible once you think about it.

I've loved a bunch of spots some of my more memorable and distant trips:

Railay Bay and Ko Phi Phi - Thailand

Fraser Island (stars at night was one of the most amazing sites ive ever seen)and Whitsunday Islands - Australia

All places I don't want to go back but need to go back to. Will be severely dissapointed if I don't make it back in my life time.

I do still have plenty of places to travel including a lot of Europe.

Hopefully Brazil for WC this summer and Munich next years oktoberfest. Maybe those will get bumped up on best place to travel

Have hit 48 of the 50 US states thus far. Three road trips the last three summers. Love it. Favorite places city wise have been Seattle, Austin, Louisville, Chicago.

Favorite National Parks have been Bryce Canyon, Olympic, Mammoth Caves, Assateague Island... There is so much Im forgetting.
Other notables:

Flagstaff, AZ. Camping on the cities highest elevated mountain where Flagstaff has the lowest level of light pollution in American, stargazing was pretty incredible. Saw about 7 to 8 shooting stars in an hours time with no meteors or any special events going on.

Meeting Eddie Vedder in Seattle.

Alcatraz Island in San Fran.

Man I could go on and on.

I went to Mana, Fiji which was pretty dope.

On way back from Australia with my then GF were there for about a week. Stayed in a hostel with own room/bathroom for like $50 a night including meals.

Only semi-issue which was kinda funny was that the water was legit too warm. Even if you were chest deep it was really warm water.

Fiji was exactly what we expected which was awesome

My Favorites

1) San Francisco
2) Mendocino
(Just got back from 2 weeks in cali)

"The City" is just so many different places in one small compact City. Sports, Music, Fine Arts...even go to see part of the America's Cup racing.

Northern Cali is beautiful, isolated and perfect for getting off the grid. The Mendocino area is a personal fave.

3) DC (I spent 2 weeks there this summer volunteering at the Smithsonian FolkLife festival)

I LOVE DC. I'm not a big flag waiver but it the place always makes me proud to be an American.

4) Sedona AZ - ANother beautiful isolated place that is almost alien in its geography (and lifestyle....there are some, let's say...interesting people there.)

Least Favorite, Orlando Florida...or pretty much any place in Florida besides the Keys or Gulf Islands.

It might as well be a mall in anyplace usa. The two exceptions I listed are almost complete opposites, The keys for general debauchery, the islands for general peace and quiet.

My all time favorite is Mont Saint Michel in France.

Iceland is like a different planet. Pretty amazing.

Being from NY, I'm pretty jaded about cities. Still, I love SF and London. I guess I love visiting big cities in general.

Worst? Manila. Insanely dirty. Public transportation is incredibly uncomfortable. You are really forced to spend all your time in malls. Stick to the scenic places like Boracay.

I need to do a lot more travel. Too many great places abroad that I haven't seen.

You get the wrong idea if you stick to highway driving.  I have had the wrong idea.  Kansas is beautiful.  This was the first time I had gotten off the highway.  Was blown away by the musicians in the banjo and guitar contests at Winfield.

Best (in no particular order);
Vanuatu
Fiji
Phuket, Thailand
San Francisco
Gol Coast, Australia - heading there Thursday to Sunday (end of season footy trip)
Hong Kong

Worst;
LA - plenty of "landmarks" and attractions are overrated (Rodeo Drive, Mings, markets)
Bangkok - most of the city is fantastic. Went there for the 2nd time a couple of months ago and the place we stayed seemed like it was in a ghetto
Jakarta, Indonesia - unbelievably busy, dirty, infrastructure terrible

I went to Italy a couple years ago for my Honeymoon and it was my favorite, but partially because I'm Italian. The food is obviously amazing, the people are warm, the wine is delicious... and the WOMEN! Yikes... They all look like Alyssa Milano and Sara Varano.

Went to Paris this year... pretty similar. Great people, beautiful women, lots of wine. Europe is Heaven.

I don't like saying worst because its based on my expectations going in. I also would go back to these places in a heart beat, just didn't have the best time:

Dominican Republic - went this past summer with 6 other couple to an all inclusive. Food was pretty crappy, and I think everyone of us got sick from something. No we didn't drink water etc. One of my friends even ended up at mass general for a couple days after we got back.

Dubai - everything about the "city" (minus the tempature) was very cold and uninviting. Coming from Iran where are are the most friendly, inviting, accomodating people to Dubai jist left a sour taste. Had some fun there but any time I have a friend going I somewhat prepare them and when they come back they then "get it". Also having prostitutes literally hang off you and your dads arms trying to gt you to take them home was extremely uncomfortable

Let me plug my home country a bit. Watamu is an amazing location, he you can hustle an apartment near the beach. (tourist hotels all over the nation are just plain expensive because its possible). A dhow ride with Swahili cuisine comes high on the to do list. Nairobi's a fun city if you don't mind elite level lack of organisation and general tardiness. However its a fun city for varied culture, food and night life plus there is an amazing National Park right there at its door step.  Speaking of wild life, Kenya is pretty good for Game reserves. The annual Gnu migration is a must see.

Best as defined how?

For me, the "best" place to visit would be Hong Kong, though Chiang Mai Thailand is close.
The best place to live is Monterey California.

Worst place I have visited is East St. Louis.
Worst place to live is the same.

The Best:

So far, Lake Tahoe. It's just nice out there.

The Worst:

Shenzhen, China. We went on a tour. The jade stores there does not let you of their establishments unless you buy something.
What exactly do you mean they don't let you out?  Do they do this to everyone, or just tourists? Can you just put it on the credit card and then dispute it?

The tour stops there.

The tour guide brings you to the place, shows you the jades, how it's made and stuff. Then you go into a some sort of an open area with chairs and they serve you water. And the tour stops there. It wont go on until someone from the tour group buys something.

IDK if this is still happening, this was about 6 years ago. My family and I are with a group of 25 and we were stuck in that room being fed water for about 45 minutes. When one of the guys asked why are we still waiting, the tour guide literally said "we need to buy atleast something for the tour to continue on."

Worst tour of my life.

I'm quite a fan of European countries - one of my favorites was def Tuscany, spent two weeks in Pienza just eating and drinking and driving around and then eating and drinking again...

Worst was probably Detroit, but only went there for work, so that might not have helped...

Will be going to Mexico with the woman later this year, looking forward to that. Oh, and just to throw some numbers in here: http://www.statista.com/statistics/207826/top-destinations-of-air-inclusive-vacations/

Best- Coronado Island- Just so relaxing and peaceful

Worst- Wheaton Arkansas- Stayed there when going across the states, town of about 50 people (all of who seemed like they want to axe murder my wife and I) and a billion Locusts and Frogs....Stayed at their one motel there next to a field. You could not walk out at night as you could not help but step on frogs in every step...then when waking up in the morning our Giant Yellow Ryder truck was Green...I thought someone painted it, as we got closer we realized it was covered entirely by locusts. We still had locusts coming out of our air vents after about 200 miles.  Funny but I still look back and like the experience even though I hated at the time....

Distant Second is Philly.

About 15 years ago my wife, daughters and I went to Sedona for 5 days and took a day at the Grand Canyon.  We stayed at a beautiful place called Enchantment Resort right in Boynton Canyon.  It was expensive, but the short stay made it affordable.  With 2 kids, 10 and 5 at the time, 5 nights worked perfect for us.

The day at the Grand Canyon was strange.  Only about a 2-hour drive from Sedona (I think).  My younger daughter had a rough day (cranky and borderline tantrumy)-- later to tell us that the Grand Canyon scared her.  I thought GC was amazing, but to be honest after the first 30 minutes or so, I was past the thrill and the rest of the views were still amazing -- but in a way more of the same.  Not adventueous by nature we didn't do anything like the mule ride on the ridge or anything like that.  My wife and younger daughter were terrified; me and my older daughter were impressed but pretty much done with it after a few hours.  I suspect others loved the GC as it is unbelievable, but this was my take.

The Sedona trip overall though was VERY worth it.  Lots of walks, intersting wildlife (the kids liked that a lot), nice pool, etc...

During the Spring and Summer, my wife and I love visiting Abingdon, Virginia! Has the Creeper trail which is great for hiking, walking, biking. There is local winery. A lot of cool small antique shops, and plenty of great small restaurants. On Saturdays, they have the best Farmer's Market I have ever been too! Also great disc golf courses around, its fun throwing into the the beautiful scenery! BUT the best thing about Abingdon is the BARTER THEATRE! They put on great shows and are why we keep going back! Overall Abingdon is a great lil place to go if you love to buy local and be surrounded by a great community!

Loved both places.  Last time I was at the grand canyon I was much more adventurous.  Last year when I was in the west coast I couldn't even get another bear the cliffs edges.  I don't trust my balance as much anymore and I definitely did not like seeing my kid anywhere near the edge.

Sunsets at both places are asking the best I've ever seen, but I'll take my home here on Cape Cod for most gorgeous sunsets against anyplace on earth!

Thx for the reply. I'm looking for something family oriented and around 2500-4000. Would prefer a part of the beach that had somewhat decent waves. And a decent town with shops for the wife.

I live on the other end of Massachusetts and normally vacation in southern Maine. Oddly I've never vacationed at the cape. And with all the different spots and options on the cape, it's hard to know which is best.

Orleans near Nauset beach would meet a lot of your needs.  Chatham would be nice for both doing and waves too, though you might have to watch out for sharks!  Really Nauset on down to Truro, on the CC National Seashore have the biggest waves.

Seems odd, but I think my favorite place in AZ was maybe Meteorite Crater followed by Tombstone. I couldn't deal with those Grand Canyon busses driving so fast and so close to the edge with no railing

If you want decent waves, the Outer Cape is the place to be, starting at Orleans rotary and out to P-town. The National Seashore is wonderful.  We like Truro because it is quiet, and close to both the ocean and the bay beaches, yet accessible to P-town for shopping, restaurants and entertainment.

I've gone to Hawaii about 6 times with my wife, because she has family there.  I've visited most of the major islands (Maui, Oahu, Kauai and Big Island)...  I liked Kauai the most.  Probably Oahu the least.

My family went on a cruise to the Caribbean one year.  I liked Nassau, Bahamas by far the least.  The best was St. Maarten.

Took a trip across Ireland.  I really enjoyed the small towns like Dingle.  Less so Dublin.

Last year we took a trip to Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing.   Definitely liked Tokyo the most.  Not anxious to re-visit Beijing.

I've traveled all around the States for work.  Probably boring for most of you guys since you likely live on the East Coast, but I really loved staying in Manhattan.  I see why people fall in love with that city, but it's probably easier to enjoy when you're spending most of your time discovering exciting restaurants/bars and seeing broadway shows.  I also really loved the work trip I took to New Orleans, but that was partially because it was in the midst of the Superbowl excitement.  I'd love to go back there.  Such an interesting scene and I really love music.    Maybe the worst place I've traveled for work was Southern Illinois.  Boring.  I also didn't really enjoy Dallas, but I might have visited the wrong spots.   I saw everything I'll ever need to see about Cleveland in a couple days.  There's nothing to do there, but it was surprisingly clean and casual.

I really want to see more of Europe.  I think we might go to Italy next.  Maybe Northern Italy.  My wife wants to see Crete.  She also wants to visit Australia and Singapore.   We just got married and I'm not really sure where we'll have our honeymoon.  Open to suggestions.

Scrolled through this topic again because I was thinking about travelling :) saw I replied almost 5 years ago, as I have travelled a lot over the last couple of years here's an update.

By the way I am from the Netherlands but took some trips to both sides of our globe.

Best:
- Grand Canyon, Yosimite, Lake Tahoe, Death Valley (surprised me), Zion NP (in general the South-West was truly amazing to be and travel for 3 weeks).
- San Diego (probably my favourite city in the US), Key West, Sentosa/Captiva Island.
- Hong Kong
- Singapore
- Bangkok (if you go with friends to party its crazy), Ko Tao, Koh Samui, Khao Sok NP.
- Kuala Lumpur (although not as cool as Singapore/Bangkok).
- Chitzen Itza, Mexico.
- Curacao (for chilling and relaxing its very nice).
- Rome, Tuscany
- Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada (Andalucia)
- Stockholm and Copenhagen are two underrated cities.
- Amsterdam and Rotterdam (Rotterdam where I live is very upcoming).
- Riga

Worst:
- Marseille in France
- Khaosiung in Taiwan, just did not really like the city.

Next trip:
- 3 weeks roadtripping through Oregon and Washington State (Seattle, Portland, Highway 101, Crater Lake, Bend, Olympic NP, Mt Raineer, Visit IT and AB in Tacoma).

Bucket list:
- Australia (east/middle)
- New Sealand
- West Canada (Brittish Columbia and Alberta + Vancouver Island).
- South Africa or Tanzania to spot big 5.
- Boston and New York
- Still TD Garden (might go next season).

No not for fun. Just drove like maniacs through the city a few times to get to work and even not stopping for the crooked police. Worked at the airport but sometimes the easiest/safer road to take was not available.

Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe & Zambia are fantastic. Grand Canyon was probably the most breathtaking thing I've ever seen.

Germany, France and Greece are all amazing. Never been to a place I regret. Going to Japan at the end of this year, hoping that it lives up to my expectations!

P.s. everyone should travel to Australia ;) we're cool down here

Worst:  Karachi, Pakistan in 1980.  I was with my father and we were downright frightened to be there.  We were on our way to a rural area with ancient ruins on the Indus River.  Fortunately, the rural town was not so scary, but the food was practically inedible (spicy).  My dad refused to eat it except for white rice.
