Ya, as if you have to wonder...He'd be IN the rotation by now, and you either know it, or you don't know enough about hoop. SA doesn't send their draft picks out to pasture...and why would anyone...you don't get NBA by D league time. You only get D league. We have KG to teach him, and play some REAL meaningful minutes that COUNT to something....WHY wait till KG is dead....he is here NOW..put the kid in, KG wanted to play forward all along, said so, and you know that..Melo at center...that is what he does......Did Indiana send Hibbert to the D league..?

James Andersen.....?
Plus, San Antonio rarely drafts projects.
They go for ready players like Mills.
And that new guy that played last night vs. the Hornets.
We wish we had their scouts.

But no, he wouldn't be drafted or playing there.

San Antonio is a pretty poor example.  They use the D-League as much as any other team in the NBA.  In fact, they were the second team to purchase a D-League affiliate and own the current D-League champions.

Danny Green, Nando de Colo, James Anderson, Cory Joseph are some examples of guys that they have sent to the D-League.  Ian Mahinmi is probably the best example, a raw big man who was drafted at the end of the first round.  He spent a good amount of time in the D-League.  San Antonio would probably be the most likely team to put him in the D-League, had they drafted him.

The issue is , he can't even cut it in practice right now. He is over helping, a second too late on helping on the weakside, not boxing guys out that good, not setting the right picks etc.

Im sure kg helps him in practice but even then , he is still not getting it. Playing real games then will be a disaster, like a domino effect.

Melo closes comparison is to Deandre Jordan who also has low bbiq. But he is super athletic, and finally after a few years in the league plays well enough not to make too many mistakes. This is hopefully where fab can get to. It will be a big accomplishment as many many drafted players never get to be regulars in the nba

I doubt any team in the NBA would be giving Fab Melo time on the court this year.

A lot of talk..but WHO has seen him play..really....? SA would be playing him like splitter....and the other rookies they now play regularly....and if he is so way out of form...then WHY DRAFT him..? Something isn't right.

They would not be playing Melo. Not to dismiss Melo, but there is no way he would be on top of their offense to get any burn from Pop.

...and just to pre-empt any mention of Aaron Baynes immediately getting significant minutes straight after signing from Europe and not knowing the system; Baynes plays on the Australian national team who play a significant amount of spurs plays as they are coached by Brett Brown, an assistant coach of the Spurs.

Well it definitely helps that they have been such a good regular season team the past few years.

If we were in 1st second place we would have the luxury to have KG and Pierce take games off, we could afford to give rookies/younger guys more playing time etc.

For the past several years though this hasn't been the case. We have been more middle of the pack and so can't spend time developing younger guys during the season as much as we'd like.

If we were in 1st I'm sure every now in then at least when KG took a game off they would be able to call Melo up to get a handful of minutes

They drafted him for his potential.  He's a seven-footer with  great tools and a developing skillset, but he's not ready to contribute in the NBA yet.

It was a pick for the future, not the present.

I'm definitely hoping for a glimpse of him in the green uniform before the season is out.

He was so raw in the summer league. Wasn't able to stay on the floor even in the summer league.

He's come a long way but still raw as all hell.

They would probably take the same path they did with another young, foreign big.  As mentioned earlier, Ian Mahinmi played 46 games in the D-League as a rookie.  He appeared in 6 games for the Spurs, playing 23 minutes, all before the start of the D-League.  He only appeared in 26 games (averaging 6.3 minutes per game) in his second season.

It would not be shocking nor a sign that Melo is a bust if he didn't play significant NBA minutes next season.

Fab Melo is a long-term project. He is not supposed to be playing major minutes in the NBA this year.

Hit it on the head. The reason he's in D-league is because they couldn't send him back to college for a year.  Lots of 1st rounders with big potential are playing in the D-league. No big deal.
