Begarin can't shoot (from three or the foul line) and honestly I didn't see the promised explosiveness in Summer League.

Still crossing my fingers for Yam, but he is not NBA ready and may never be.

Probably both would still be late 2nd round flyers.

We need some of those Jokic-style second rounders ...

Begarin should spend a summer with an elite shooting coach.  Most players don’t want to do it, but it works wonders.  If he can shoot free throws in the mid 70’s and 3’s in the low 30’s, he’s an NBA player.

I don't see why it would be much different ... mid-late 2nd or undrafted

This kid was 18 last summer grew up in a basketball family .This kid asked to come over and if i remember came in late with little practice time. They don't make many 18 year old's with his kind of athleticism and frame. That guy is a jet in transition and has a strong motor, moves laterally well and is a terror tacking down blocks from behind.
Remember Brown couldn't shoot or shoot free throws .
He needs to be in States and be getting groomed by the Celtics organization.
Put him with Drew Hanlon  during the summer .Let him make the rounds with one of our young guys. He physically looks older so the use of raw has a sort of negative connotation
.
Every time i have see the kid on tape -" this kid could be great asset.

Love the analysis Rollie Mass.  Always enjoy your insights (especially when the agree with mine  ;) )

Yes, Begarin is going to have to develop some shooting touch but that is true of many young talents like him (Brown, Billups, just to name a couple that come to mind).  He may already have everything else he is going to need.

In a recent exhibition game against the Auburn’s men’s basketball program, Madar put on a show. He put up an impressive 24 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists in the 95-86 win for Israel. Auburn is playing three exhibition games in Israel this summer.

He’s also college-aged, so these are much more his peers than the 30 year-olds in the Adriatic League he plays against during the year.

Yeah, if we spent a second rounder on a college senior with enough game to put up 24 / 7 / 7 against an SEC team, I'd be at least somewhat encouraged.

Interesting read on Madar and Begarin.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nba/celtics-prospects-yam-madar-juhann-begarin-in-boston-you-could-do-worse/ar-AA1cyt1B?ocid=msedgntp&cvid=b04b85ac19b44320b4501fed36ea5b44&ei=29

I think this article sums it up well.  It is about how I see it based on what I have seen in summer league and then read along the way.  To me, the question at this point is not where they would go in the draft but what trade value they have, which is a little bit related.  I would say that either probably have as much trade value as a middle to late second round pick.  The article says Madar is 22.  He is getting to the point where you have to start to say, he is what he is.  Begarin still has upside.  I would like to see Begarin on a 2-way this season or soon.  Madar, eh, not that excited about him anymore.

This thread being bumped was a bit bittersweet. Miss PhoSita & rollie, but their contributions were always fun.

Not really hopeful of anything from Yam. Begarin, maybe? Not sure - seems unlikely.

I think you're too down on Madar.  Winning the Rising Star award in Europe is not a small deal.  Here are the past winners:

2005 - Erazem Lorbek
2006 - Andrea Bargnani
2007 - Rudy Fernandez
2008 - Danilo Gallinari
2009 - Novica Velickovic
2010 - Ricky Rubio
2011 - Nikola Mirotic
2012 - Nikola Mirotic
2013 - Kostas Papanikolaou
2014 - Bogdan Bogdanovic
2015 - Bogdan Bogdanovic
2016 - Alex Abrines
2017 - Luka Doncic
2018 - Luka Doncic
2019 - Goga Bitadze
2021 - Usman Garuba
2022 - Rokas Jokubaitis

The majority of that list became NBA rotation players at some point in their career.

He was also only the fourth player to win the award in his first Euroleague season, with Fernandez, Gallo, and Jokubaitis the other three.

I'm not predicting stardom for Madar, but I do think if he were in the draft this year he'd be a second-round pick again.  I don't think his future is in Boston, however.
