If you had to choose between the two, who would prefer moving forward with?

Love Smarts hustle and defense, really versatile player that can guard 3 positions. Has a tendency to make big plays in crunch time.  He is limited offensively and not a true PG. 3pt shooting can be an issue.

Schroder is mediocre defensively and can’t guard multiple positions, but he’s a better scorer and more of a natural PG. Dennis seems to play better as a starter vs coming off the bench and the offensive flow is different with him running the point.

I’m struggling to decide, so I’m curious what you all think.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

We can’t afford Schroder going forward, but I’d prefer him.

I love Smart, but I have to reluctantly admit that this team really clicks when Schroder starts at PG. He's a great fit with Brown and Tatum and Rob. Surprisingly, Schroder doesn't work nearly as well off the bench.

Ideally, I would want Schroder starting and Smart coming off the bench along with J Rich and Horford as our bench unit. Unfortunately I can't see how we keep Schroder ,  Smart or no Smart.

Smart has seemed to always be a unique and  special bench role player to me.  A specialist against certain teams , lineups and presssure situations.    He is pretty much the same offensive liability as always , nothing has changed .   Eventually his body won’t tolerate the insane defensive pressure he can bring on opponents.  Fun guy to watch play without the ball .  does all the dirty work , but kills his own offense taking numb nuts shots and such . The Jays and Rob need a court ball handler point guard , who think pass first , but can knock down the short jumpers to keep the defense honest and off the Jays backs .

I d trade both Smart and Dennis for the right guy.  We got Rich already , seems like we can let one of him or S,art go and net in a starting true point guard.

Is there any team out there other than Det that can really pay him, though? Looks like everyone else is over the cap next season.

There are plenty of teams with projected cap space. Someone will pay him. Just look at  what Evan Fournier got last summer.

Evan Fournier made sense for the Knicks, though. He’s a starter for them and they needed the scoring. Not seeing many teams with cap space that are in need of a starting PG. Maybe the Cavs, but they seemed to be rolling with Rubio running the offense.

If we could trade Smart for a first plus expiring contract,  can we keep Scroder?

I don’t think it’s an accident this comes up after last night’s game.

Schroder scored last night and people are feeling good about him again. But the reason he scored was that he hit his 3s - he went 4-5. Of course, Smart has nights like that too, but nobody’s fooled into thinking MS is a reliable 3-point shooter.  DS is just a tick better than Smart from 3; he had one of those games. I’m glad for it but it doesn’t tell me who he is as a player.

What about the rest of his game? Not great. I see people writing he makes the offense go. He had 3 assists and two turnovers. For a point guard, that is very bad. There wasn’t anything else special about his decisionmaking, and he made a bunch of bad plays especially in the 2d quarter. Missing cuts and cutting into the wrong area. The Js had it last night, and the guys who helped them most were Al and Rob.

Bottom line, if someone can show us the splits when he plays with the starters minus Smart and they look good I would have to take another look, but from where I sit he’s makes the team offense bad, is a minus defender, and he can’t be gone soon enough.

I think what it tells me is how desperate we are for a player like Schroder, but not necessarily Schroder. For the Jays to succeed, we need an All-Star level guy who is a little bit better distributor and 3-pt shooter. It’s been nice having Schroder, but there are a lot more guys like him in the league than Smart.

Quickness, ball-handling, dribble penetration and passing off the dribble.

This team has nowhere near enough penetration in the halfcourt. Ways to get defenses out of shape and attack a scrambling out of position halfcourt defense.

We need more quickness and ball-handling. That is what Schroder brings that we need albeit ideally with a PG with better decision making that Schroder.

I alway said Schroeder is a better fit at PG than Smart
C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark
PG- Irving, Rozier, Larkin
