The thing that bothered my most about Toine's game, other than never seeing a shot he didn't like, was that he was such a naturally gifted rebounder and, if he played a more orthodox PF rather than his awful version of the stretch power forward, he might have averaged 11-12 rebounds a game. He had a "feel" for the ball coming off that rim, but sadly he pulled himself farther and farther from the basket limiting his rebounding opportunities.

A lot of guys who are drafted by junk teams never develop properly and Toine had no mentorship and just did whatever he wanted. If he had gone to a better team I think he would've been a better player.

He certainly should have gotten more boards a game with how gifted he was rebounding.  However, his lack of lift and lack of variety of post moves did hurt him trying to score in the post against more athletic big man (remember him having trouble against the likes of Kenyan Martin and others). He was such a unique player as he was so gifted in some areas, and big warts in others. He could never really mold it in a way to play the best version of himself.  Also, though he was a basketball junkie and played all the time, he didn’t really practice in a way to really hone his skills.

I can see the dribbling and passing comparison to Ben Simmons for a big man for sure.

The Boston offense this season has increasingly resembled the 'whirring machine' of the later Spurs - not surprising that there's an Udoka connection.
'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021

Udoka and Will Hardy are both Popovich guys. Even Damon Stoudamire played his final season there alongside Ime in 2008.

Lots of connections to San Antonio.

He was an assistant coach on the 2014 team that played some of the most beautiful offensivea team basketball of our time - and beat the Heatles in the Finals.
