I'm just not sure how Maye is supposed to be "developing" on the sidelines watching all this unfold either. At least with guys like Love, Mahomes, Rodgers, etc. they could look at competent QBs who made the playoffs (Favre, Alex Smith, Rodgers). Brissett is just awful and there are lots of bad things unfolding around the field.

Btw, the Commanders are said to have a bad O-Line, but Jayden Daniels seems to be doing fine and he's certainly also benefitting from having great coaching + OC Kingsbury. Meanwhile the Pats have Van Pelt who was like the 11th guy they interviewed and has never been an official OC elsewhere.

If Maye doesn't play next week and they fall to 1-4, I think it's gonna get real ugly. Game's at Gillette, Brady is commentating it on FOX, and it kind of feels like a "pivotal" game in the sense of, will they be another 3-14 or 4-13 team, or could they still squeak out some wins and be semi-competitive?

But I'm sorry, if they roll with Brissett most of this season I'm not gonna tune in either, this offense is offensive to watch.

He's not being developed, he's being protected. They don't want to damage him physically or mentally by putting him behind this O-line.  The Pats already ruined one QB's career post-Brady, it would really suck for them to ruin another  :police:

As bad as he has been, Brissett is fulfilling an important purpose - being the pinata for a bottom 3 team that is going to lose a lot this season, and everyone knows it. He was signed not to win games but to be the crash test dummy. Why have all the QBs we've had post Brady looked hesitant and terrible? Why did Mac look ok year one then gradually got worse to the point where he looked like he was having the yips? Because it's hard to stand there and find targets and execute when you know you're going to get hit 1.5 secs after the snap.

The reality is we are going to be trash this year, and probably unwatchable. It's entirely possible we go 1-16, that's how bad we are. We're paying for years of mismanagement (The Patriot Way) after Brady and Belichick papered up the cracks (in Bill's case, papering up the cracks he contributed to with terrible drafting and FA signings while he relied on Brady taking hometown deals and overperforming to paper up the others). I would love to say Maye play as much as the next guy but I fear that if they did that 2 years from now we will be having another Mac Jones situation.

Buckle up, it's going to be a (very) bumpy ride  :-X

The smart play here is to sit Maye for the majority of this season (maybe give him some games at the end of the year). But considering the state of the offensive line right now, it would be a terrible idea to put him out there to fail. They paid Brissett to be a human punching bag for this exact purpose. Take the beating, gut through the season, end up with a top 5 pick, fix offensive line etc in draft and FA. Give the kid an earnest shot next year.

If it wasn?t apparent before, Belichick truly left the roster in a terrible state with bad draft after bad draft to end his tenure here in NE. They need to rebuild that roster on offense and defense.

I think the benefit to sitting Maye longer not only allows him to not get killed and lose confidence but also the Pats to lose games. This team is not going anywhere but if they play Maye earlier it could bump the team to 7-10 instead of 4-13 and that could impact the long-term future of the team with getting a worse draft pick. Not only is the oline bad but let?s be honest he also does not have great skill players either. The Bears have so much more there and even Washington has Mclaurin at least as a WR1. I do want to see Maye but ideally we start off like 2-8 or something before he comes out there so there is less pressure on him to win games but also if he wins a couple it?s not going to push us out of a real high draft pick.

Looking at the rest of the season, the defense is decent, but they're losing guys. Dugger going down is less than ideal. If the injuries pile up we probably are looking at a 3 win season. Then everyone can argue about whether to draft Travis Hunter, take the best OL available - or pull a Belichick and trade down and draft 2 linemen.

I know people want to see the shiny new toy but throwing the kid into this absolute mess would be detrimental.  I'd much rather have him learn & watch.  The offensive line is atrocious. I really don't know what strides the kid would make in this offense right now.

Brady is calling the Dolphins Patriots game next week? Thanks for the heads up. Looks like I won't be watching that game now. I refuse to watch a Fox game with him commenting.

The injuries are piling up.  Missing some or all of the game yesterday on the offensive line:

David Andrews
Verderian Lowe
Michael Jordan
Caedan Wallace
Cole Strange
Chukwuma Okorafor
Jake Andrews

That is probably 3 starters.  Just killer.  And the defense now has some problems too.

I wonder if we will ever see this line:

Wallace
Strange
D. Andrews
Sow
Onwenu

That would be a massive improvement, even considering that the LT is a bit of a weakness.

The O-line is bad even if fully healthy. Any type of patchwork O-line is going to be an absolute nightmare for the QB, so might as well keep Maye safe on the sidelines. At least we'll get a top-5 pick out of all this mess!

I don't know, I think fully healthy this line is at least average, maybe above average, but lines are never fully healthy.  It would have been nice if they had been able to sign or otherwise acquire a solid vet tackle.  Who knows, maybe they tried.

Has there been any news on Strange coming back?

My thoughts:  a great QB will become great no matter what (barring injury).  Things might look ugly as they learn, but they're not going to lose their confidence.  The great ones aren't fragile mentally.  They can accept adversity.

There are other QBs, who can be successful, but only under near perfect conditions. If Maye is one of those guys, then yes, you could do some long-term damage by playing him as a rookie. But, if he's truly a franchise player? I think he would survive, the season, and would thrive going forward.

My biggest worry about playing a young quarterback would be the risk of a career altering injury.  I think the mental stuff is overblown. Mac Jones is used as an example, but Jones was never going to be a top-tier QB.

Not that I've heard, but I haven't been playing really close attention, given how bad this team is. ;D

Agreed. Drake is also likely not ready, which could be why the Pats didn?t want him to play even in garbage time yesterday. I know no one wants to hear that, but Maye is still learning the offense. He didn?t look great in the limited minutes vs the Jets and that was against backups as the game was over. Brissett already knows the system as he has played under AVP in the past. Maye will be given another shot this year, most likely due to Brissett getting injured, but it?s almost certainly not going to be next week vs Miami. They will roll with Brissett while he is still upright.

David Andrews likely done for the season with a shoulder injury. Seems like this will make a Maye sighting less likely anytime soon. Either way, though, Pats O-line just got a lot worse, and the Pats might have the No. 1 pick in the bag.

They've had so many injuries the first four weeks. Jennings, Lowe, Bentley, Strange, Barmore (blood clots), Austin, and now Andrews. Plus Dugger is hurt and may miss a few weeks too. This is after they traded Judon as well. What a mess. And frankly at this rate Brissett could officially get hurt at some point as well given the state of the O-Line.

At least Week 1 was sort of fun

I'm surprised Brissett hasn't been hurt yet, but I expect it to happen soon. I guess Mayo would have to go to Maye at that point, but I don't see it turning out well.
