Tyler Honeycutt sounds very interesting

Showing excellent size for a small forward at 6-8, to go along with a nice wingspan and better athleticism than you might expect on first glance, Honeycutt is a very smooth, very versatile wing player with a big upside and an outstanding feel for the game.
Quote
Defensively, Honeycutt has outstanding potential with his terrific size, length, smarts and anticipation skills, and he's already one of the more productive players in the NCAA on this end in terms of the amount of rebounds (9.6), steals (2.2) and blocks [1.8] he puts up on a per-40 minute basis. Honeycutt moves his feet well on the perimeter and does a very good job of using his length to contest shots
Quote
The fact that Honeycutt is already such a good rebounder despite lacking a significant amount of strength and spending heavy minutes at the small forward (as well as the power forward) position is a great sign. He has an excellent feel for tracking down loose balls and doesn't seem to lack much in the ways of toughness or hustle the way some other skinny players do.

I think he would be my first choice pick.

He does look good, but check out singleton!
Hmmm ... not sure now.

I think Singleton moves into first position, he was better than I remembered (from reading his profile a few months ago).

Singleton, Honeycutt and Nogueira are the three guys I am interested in with that late first round pick.

I don't watch enough college hoops to know these guys very well, but why would you go after a small forward?  That's the last position I'd draft, all things being equal.

Center, it would obviously have to be a project but our issues there are obvious.

PF, KG's only under contract one more season, COULD be used in a trade if they decide to totally rebuild, and BBD has got to be shown the door.

SG: Ray also could be traded, he's playing well but the oldest and only under contract one more season.

PG: Rondo's on a team-friendly deal, but also has by far the most trade value if you wanted to make a major deal for someone like Dwight.

Small forward...  Pierce isn't being traded, he's under contract for several more seasons, and he's still playing at a very high level.  Plus, they well might re-sign Jeff Green.  Where's a small forward going to fit in, even if they do decide to rebuild?
Best player available -- I'd go for talent over need

wishlist for 2011 Draft:

1. Nikola Mirotic. He's the most talented player I've seen in Europe since Pau Gasol. Not comparing them, Pau is a 4/5 with lots of size, while Nikola is a 3/4 who can put it on the floor and deadly (and clutch) shooter. He's going to stay in Europe a couple of years, so he's a good investment. I'd rather have him developing in Europe than getting another undersized 2 guard like Nolan Smith.

2. Kyle Singler. Gordon Heyward is showing some promise in Utah, and Kyle shut him down in the 2010 championship game. Yet, he doesn't get a lot of love in the mock drafts (nbadraft= 29th pick; draftexpress= 38th pick). Buying a pick in the 30s could be enough to grab him, he can't be worse than Gody.

3. Keith Benson. Athletic big man, late bloomer who needs some developing work. If we still had Clifford Ray I'd be higher on him. Rebounds, blocks... enough said.

4. Jajuan Johnson/Jeremy Tyler/Jordan Williams. Size and youth, with pick #25 you can take a chance on them.

5. Jamie Skeen. A bit undersized, but the kid could be very good, not star level, but a good contributor.

What would I do?

Select Mirotic with the first round pick (no guaranteed money until the 2012 or 2013 summer)

Buy a pick in the 30s if they can get any of the players mentioned. Singler would be great, Benson would be also good.

Select a euro prospect with the second round pick. Let him develope in Europe. Deal with free agency and fill the roster with undrafted or NBDL guys. Round the roster to 15 and wait for the trade deadline. Then, just watch Danny do his thing  ;)

I'd just like the see the team buy as many picks as they can (I'll assume that there will be some sellers, with the lockout coming and the sense that the draft is pretty mediocre).  If the team wants to rebuild using trades, Danny's got to start accumulating trade-sweeteners.  The only things we have to pair with any of our expiring contracts are...  well, Avery Bradley, the Clippers pick, our pick, and that's about it.  Rondo, if you wanted to make a HUGE splash.  We're very much devoid of the kinds of young talent that you need to get a Chris Paul or a Dwight Howard.

I am surprised Mirotic isn't higher up on the draft board (#19 on draftexpress).

Based on what I read about him, I expected him to be a late lottery pick (at least).

Mirotic has size (6-10), shooting ability (50% FG% 40% 3FG% almost 90% FT%) and has been very productive (Per 40 = 21pts / 9.4rebs / 1.4stls / 1.6blks in 17mpg) while being a contributor to a top team (Real Madrid) in Europe. Good length (7-1) and mobility. Quick release on his jumper. Stretch four who creates matchup problems.

I don't understand why he isn't higher.

Anyway, I think he'll move up the draft board quite a bit between now and the draft.

If the Celtics want Mirotic, they'll need to trade up.

Why Honeycutt over Singleton?

Honeycutt is a tall, speedy, athletic young scorer. A future SG who can do some SF time. Singleton is a very good choice for a SF, an athletic defender.

I think that we really need a new young scorer who can create an immediate mismatch if Honeycutt plays SG.

I'd be very keen on Singleton, Faried or Honeycutt.    Ainge does like gritty, athletic defensively-oriented guys at the end of the 1st round: Bradley, Giddens, TA (he wanted George Hill as well).  Travis Leslie's another intriguing guy.

One name- Bojan Bogdanović. All-around swingman, very solid built, defensive specialist with 3 point range. Should be available at #25.

No one would want it though.

That is pretty much where I am right now too.  I really like Honeycutt.  He reminds me a bit of Tayshaun Prince, and I think he has the best risk/reward ratio of anyone late in the round.  I feel pretty confident he will be an NBA player, but I also think he has a chance to be an impact player...everyone else is more of a huge risk (Tyler, most of the Euros), or a low reward guy (Singleton, Singler).

I would be very happy with any of those 3 guys though.

I don't see how Singleton is a low-reward guy.  With his size, athletic profile and defensive pedigree, he has Gerald Wallace potential.

I don't think he has the offensive skill of Wallace (and Wallace isn't exactly Michael Jordan himself).  I see Singleton more in the mould of a James Posey or a Bruce Bowen.  He can make himself a useful offensive player as a spotup shooter, but will always earn his money as a defender.
