Title: Six Celtics returning from last year's team
Post by: KG Living Legend on July 16, 2017, 05:46:49 PM

That's really crazy for a 53 win team. Not complaining at all. This team should be better by 7 wins or so.

Thomas
Smart
Rozier
Horford
Crowder
Brown

Add in the new Rotation guys that will play heavy minutes
Hayward, Morris, Tatum and there is your Nine man rotation. When you look at it like that it doesn't seen so drastic.

That's an incredible amount of turnover but I think we all knew Ainge was going to do some heavy lifting this summer. And it's not quite as disruptive as it seems. In fact, there's a bit of a minutes crunch.

The top 4 guys in MPs come back and 6 of the top 9 return. So where there's been heavy minutes in the rotation those guys generally remained. Then swap in Hayward for Bradley and there's a major upgrade not to mention Hayward played 700 more minutes than Bradley last year.

Then the next two losses in terms of substantial minutes played are Amir and KO. Those guys were replaced by Morris and Baynes who together played about 600 more minutes last year than KO and Amir. So that's 1,300 more minutes total played with this crew versus last years' roster. So if everyone plays as much as they did last year (and yes, we know that won't happen) Brad will need to substantially tighten the rotation. Between everyone else who played last year there's only about 1,200 minutes left and that's before Tatum hits the court and increased minutes for Brown.

So there will be more of a dogfight for minutes this year and that can be a good thing. Guys will have to earn their floor time.

For the most part the core is there from last year, but thats a lot of turnover. Surprisingly. Looking at our wings, in terms of earning minutes, it is like trying to enter West point.

You've got a point but notice that there is only one big in that group.

53 wins was better than the team was last year.  Given the lack of quality big depth (admittedly there could still be another deal or two before the season starts...), the team would do well to match 53 or make a modest improvement.

I'm saying that the team is better, but a lot of what "better" means won't translate into wins until 2019 and 2020.

With the amount of draft picks the Celtics have had, I'm surprised it isn't even more. Look for the C's to filter through young players for the next year or two. Looking for the gem in the bunch.

It's the result of the Nets trade.
