Game Notes
Two win streaks will collide as the Denver Nuggets bring their 9 game win streak into the Garden to face try to break the Celtics' 6 game win streak.  The Nuggets earned their 9th straight victory on Saturday night with a 111-103 victory over the Cavaliers.  The Nuggets stopped the Clippers' 17 game win streak earlier this season and would like to play the spoiler for the Celtics streak as well.

The Nuggets have quietly compiled the 4th best record in the West and the 6th best record overall.   They are 9-1 in their last 10 games while the Celtics are 6-4 in their last 10.  The Celtics are playing well at home with an 18-9 record at the Garden while the Nuggets have struggled a bit on the road with an 11-15 record away from the Pepsi Center.

This is the first meeting between these two clubs this season.  They will meet again in just 9 more days.   Right after the All Star break, the Celtics will hit the road and the Nuggets will be their first game on a 5 game road trip.   This will be a big test for the Celtics and hopefully they will be up for it.

Key Matchups

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3253.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4468.jpg)
Paul Pierce vs Danilo Gallinari
Gallinari is averaging 17.1 points per game and is capable of hitting shots from the perimeter as well as getting to the basket.  He has a height advantage on Pierce which may make guarding him more difficult for the Captain.    Pierce needs to make him work on the defensive end and use his veteran wiles to limit Gallo's scoring.

(http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/3959.jpg)  vs  (http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.e1d/img/4.0/global/basketball/nba/players/4904.jpg)
Brandon Bass vs Kenneth Faried
Bass will have his hands full with Faried who has earned the nickname "Manimal."  Faried plays with an abundance of energy and is a beast on the boards.  He averages 12.2 points and 9.7 boards a game and slowing him down will be key for the Celtics.

Honorable Mention
Courtney Lee vs Andre Iguodala
The Celtics have had their share of battles with Andre Iguodala when he played for the Sixers.  He is averaging 13.5 points a game for the Nuggets but is capable of putting up big numbers on any given night.

Keys to the Game

Defense - I may sound like a broken record, but Defense is the key to every game.   If they come into every game with the mindset to make defense a priority, they stand a good chance of winning every one.  When they slack off on defense, it affects every part of their game.  The Nuggets have won 31-1 in games where they score 100+ points.  They also rank first in the league in fast break points (19.4). The Celtics have got to play tough defense if they want to win this game.

Rebound -   Since much of rebounding is effort and desire, the effort  that the Celtics show on the boards usually indicates how much the team really wants the game.  The Nuggets are a big team and are a very good rebounding team, ranking 2nd in the league with 45.4 rebounds per game and 1st in offensive rebounds with 13.8 per game.  The Celtics are 2nd to last, pulling down only 39.7 rebounds per game.  The Celtics have got to make an effort to crash the boards as a team.

Be Aggressive The more aggressive team usually gets more calls  and taking the ball to the hoop usually ends in either a basket or a foul or a kick out to a wide open teammate.  The Celtics can't settle for jumpers, especially against a team like the Nuggets who will clean up the rebounds and turn them into a fast break.  They have to be aggressive in going to the hoop. They also must be aggressive in going after loose balls and rebounds.

Move the Ball- When the Celtics move the ball and find the open man, they are very tough to beat.  When the ball movement slows and players try to do too much, it usually ends in a loss.   But the Celtics must be careful with their passes as the Nuggets are 6th in the league, forcing 15.5 turnovers a game.

X-Factors
Home and Rust vs Fatigue
The Celtics are home where they have been playing well and they need to use the crowd to give them an advantage in the game.  The Nuggets are a great home team but have struggled at times on the road with a 10-15 record away from the Pepsi Center.   The Celtics have also had 2 full days off without practice while the Nuggets are playing in the second of back to back games.

It is going to be tough to keep up with this team's quickness.

I hope Doc plays Chris Wilcox instead of Jason Collins. Collins is too slow and limited to be on the floor against this fast-breaking Nuggets team. He could kill us while Garnet gets a breather.

I'd like to see extended minutes for Jeff Green too. And close monitoring of Pierce's activity / minutes. Make sure he doesn't tire out which he is liable to do against this squad with Iggy/Gallo working him over on both ends of the court.

Faried's quickness and rebounding prowess against Bass' slow reactions, lack of focus boxing out and weaknesses pursuing loose balls is ... terrifying.

The rebounding battle is going to be extremely difficult against this Denver team.

Nuggets are 4th best in rebounding differential. Multiple rebounding big men against Boston's lack of rebounding bigs. Multiple rebounding wings against Boston's undersized off guards / combo guards. Several problem areas.

Not optimistic about our chances against Denver. Will be curious about Lawson's quickness versus Avery, for some reason I don't see Bradley being as effective. We'll see.

Extremely difficult game! Denver was a nightmare matchup for Boston anyway, now that they're on a big winning streak they look invincible. I hope that, if we lose this one (which is quite possible), we won't start the "blow it up" talk all over again, most teams in the NBA would lose to the Nuggets right now...

Denver is a good team but i'm extremely confident we win this game because Rondo isn't playing. If Rondo played we'll probably lose in a blowout. The key to this game is Avery Bradley (slowing down Ty Lawson) & Jeff Green making things hard for Wilson Chandler (if he plays) he usually doesn't play in back2backs so that helps us. The last key is Paul Pierce... He needs to stay at home with Gallanari & not leave open for 3's. Lee & K.G. will hold their own. Bass hopefully plays well, but Faried may just beast mode him or could be just the opposite if Bass decides to bring out the beast in him. ;D

Sorry, this is OUR home court, against a team, though hot, is only an afterthought as a team capable of winning the West! If we can't get a convincing win against them tonite, we SHOULD continue the "blow it up" talk 'cause there's several teams out there that are much better than Denver you've got to get thru to win a title! And if a title isn't what we're out for, we're already late for the rebuilding process!

I think we can win this at home. I definitely think, ykno, since we beat the Heat we can find a way to beat the Nuggets. My concern is I think we will have to run more half court stuff, but hopefully we just keep it simple with some high pick n rolls and stretch out KG tonight.

I absolutely fear what Manimal is going to do to Brandon Bass. It hurts to think about it.

gonna miss Sully's 6 fouls to give on the Manimal  .    Nuggets are loaded for bear with the super athletic , super quick,   Here is a game Rondo, quickness would have helped.

I can really see the Celtics getting run out of the gym on this one.  That Manimal. have went berserk
lately destroying teams.....looking like a runaway freight train hurling his body to the rim......ah la D wade of old.

Even though we'll most likely lose , ther is no reason to blow it up and only keep Rondo as our savior .  Chicago got their butt kicked by Denver too.......Losing to Denver is nothing to be ashamed of ......they are the hottest team right now.

Not being a blowout, will be a moral victory..... the manimal. needs no rest , he could play 5 back to back games and look fresh as a daisy .

Losing to Denver is no reason to hang it it up

True that Denver is not an easy matchup for any team in the league especially the C's, but even without Rondo, Boston is not an easy matchup for Denver either.

Boston has on the court 3 guys on the floor who can bring the ball up the court, and 4 guys who can initiate offense.

The problem I can easily see happening is Boston getting caught up with trying to run with these guys. As our boys in Green have seen with high octane offenses (e.g. Miami, New York, etc.) if you let them get easy buckets n transition it opens up the floor for their shooters, and then it can get ugly. But if our Boys play their game, be opportunistic in transition, pressure the ball for 48 mins on defense, this Denver team will show their vulnerability.

No one gets after the ball like Bradley and Lee (please don't trade Lee), Jeff Green has become a matchup nightmare on both offense and defense, The Captain in spurts is still capable of making Iggy uncomfortable, and KG is about to show the Manimal why every kid who dreamed of playing in the post (in this generation) had a KG poster on his wall.

The streak has a very realistic chance of continuing tonight!

One thing to ponder: Will Andre Iguodala play with fire today?

The Celtics (defeating the 76ers in game 7) indirectly led to the organization saying "We can't win" and so they ultimately decided it was OK for Iggy to go... will he blame us and play harder than ever?

I guess it's since our Sunday games are usually the matinees and I never notice :D Thanks for the tip, TP

Most annoying games are 10:30 ones when we're in the West... too bad those will be coming again in a few weeks...

Celtics recall Fab Melo from Maine Red Claws

He's up, he's down, he's back up again.

Hours before they face the Denver Nuggets at TD Garden Sunday, the Celtics recalled rookie center Fab Melo from their NBDL team, the Maine Red Claws.

Melo played one game with Maine during his most recent assignment, and he had 6 points, 5 rebounds and 1 assist in about 23 minutes against the Bakersfield Jam Friday.

Melo is averaging 11.0 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.45 blocks in 27.4 minutes per game in his 20 contests with Maine this season.

The former Syracuse player has played in two games for the Celtics this season, earning a total of 2 points, a steal and a block in eight minutes of action.

It's for when we're blowing them out... Melo can get some game reps in the fourth quarter. ;)

Let's keep those TOs low.

We had just 2 in the first half last time. Something like 6 at the end?

Lakers had kept TOs low up to end of 3Q and the game was close. Then they have 8TOs in the 4th and lose the game.

We have GOT to keep the ball in OUR hands. The Nuggets will make you pay. A lot.

Surprised we are leading. We should be down 15

What game are you watching?

We were getting very sloppy with the ball, they were picking off all our passes and Bass was airballing (and at the center of our offense)... that's not a winning formula.

Only Green was pwning

Doc, going small with Bass at the 5 = idiotic.

Starting to think doc does these things to p*** off the celticsblog.

Brandon has played pretty hard today.

It's not his fault that doc plays him the full 12 minutes of the first quarter and he gives up rebounds due to being absolutely gassed.

Yea. That was the one position Ainge really needed to upgrade in the off-season. Just not much out there to do it though. He's fine coming off the bench but as a starter is the weak link.

There are teams that play hard every night... Then there's this Denver team.

They play like its the last game theyre ever going to play. I personally don't think it's sustainable but good for them.

Adre Miller very honest.

Always liked him.

Wasn't he supposed to be a Celtic back in the day. We traded Andrew De Clerq and a #1pick to Cleveland for Vitaly.......the pick turned out to be Miller (I think)

Good memory.  I was about to comment on Miller. I always liked him  too.  I think he'd be ideal backing up a good PG in the next couple years.  Always smart, in control, and can do most things well or well enough.

Bass is a decent player -- I think most (not all) would agree. He's just got too big a role on this team.  Should be energy and 15-footers off the bench.

we shouldn't be in OT, period. still can't believe the call to give denver the ball at the end of the 4th quarter. if you have a video review and still get it wrong, you should be suspended for at least a game.

this sucks. game isn't over, but the refs blew it big-time at the end of regulation. no surprise pierce's shots aren't falling - he's had to play a lot more minutes than he should have had to (and KG on the bench to get rest). so frustrating, esp b/c that call was pretty obvious.

yeah it's all free. just click on basketball, then you'll see the list of games. click on the game you want, choose any link (preferably link 1 or 2) then you get to see the game live for free.

try it with any NBA game ongoing now to test it out.

Ugh. Didn't get to see the last 6 seconds of 2OT + the third OT.

I add an extra half hour to all games, and lately that hasn't been enough. Thankfully I missed that ugly Hawks game ending, and the final possession (Pierce GW) against the Heat, and now this game which I was really into from the start.

Happy for the win. Guys missed a lot of good looks but they never gave up and pulled it out against a really good team. Hopefully we have something in the tank for tomorrow.
