I'm watching a lot of Bill Russell videos on the youtube channel Wilt Chamberlain Archive and there's some good stuff.
Here's a short one of Russell running fast breaks (underrated ballhalndler for his time):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEs4KC4xHE0
Here's one of Russell being interviewed on the first day of training camp, his first year as player/coach:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0ZWQkMOdo0
But this is the best quality video I've seen from this era. Russell's highlights from the 1963 NBA Finals (he blocks Jerry West a lot):

West looks like 2011 Lebron in this game.

West looks like 2011 Lebron in this game.
He really does, but the clips are obviously biased, so I looked up his boxscore:

32/7/9 on 24 shots! He missed 11 shots and what - 4 or 5 of them were because Russell blocked them? Could've easily dropped 40 without the best shotblocker in history running at him :o
Great links Big, TP. Love Bob Cousy's goofy form and that Earl Strom was reffing - he was a legend at the end of his career when I started watching.

good find.
Side tangent.. we should probably never compare athetes across eras because literally every player except for Bill would be an unacceptable athlete in today's game.

Elgin Baylor could cut it too I think. West seems like he'd be ok despite Russell making him look bad in the highlights. But Cousy and Tommy and even Havlicek (though he's very young here) don't look great in that clip.

TP for the find! These are some great videos.. I had only seen the first one before.
I really like the camera angle, etc. in the older videos. Today it is zoomed out so far that you feel like the players are moving much farther and faster, when in fact it's the exact same distance (albeit they are faster).
That 3rd video you linked is the first that really makes me understand a bit more how much of an impact Bill really had on games. His rebounding and defense were everywhere, and with impeccable timing too. Havlichek's shot is silky smooth too.
I wish the NBA today would call traveling.. it'd help the game a lot.

Wow... I looked through the Lakers stats that year. Barnett, West, and Baylor an early version of Harden, Westbrook, and Durant??

Oh, that 3rd video was fun to watch...the era of hook shots and that left handed one of Cousey's...now THAT'S entertainment! :)
-
good stuff

Russell was awesome in those vids but man, his free throw form was Shaq-like horrible.
-
These guys were the BEST of their generation...
Most players had to get extra jobs in the off season---Tommy sold insurance.
Off Season meant OFF Season, get back in shape when camp starts...Not like today's players, who could practice all year long. A lot of the old timers could play in today's game, if they had these advantages, coaching, nutrition, weight lifting and non stop BB.

I'm reminded of what Larry Bird said the first time he watched video of Cousy:
"Did he lose his left hand in a farming accident?"

TP, these are awesome videos!
Tommy actually manages to get called for a charge in the last video. I didn't even know they had those back then!

Awesome vids.
So funny watching everyone play defense tho ;D ;D ;D

Right? Someone makes one decent pass and a guy is wide open. I noticed that too.
And at no point is there a real offensive set beyond “go post up and see what happens.”
The sophistication we have now on offense and defense even compared to the 1990s, never mind the 1960s, is absurd.

Thanks for these videos. Great footage. I've seen most of it over the years but nice to see again. Russell is underrated at this point. He was truly amazing. Just an incredible athlete and fantastic ballplayer! GOAT!

Can you imagine Tommy watching those videos and commenting?

It is funny to hear how the NBA game "has been ruined", blah, blah, blah.
Today's product is so much better, in almost every way.
