Game Notes
The Celtics return home from their 2 game road trip to host the San Antonio Spurs.  The Spurs are on the 4th and final game of a 4 game road trip.  The Spurs won the series 2-0 last season.  They started the season out 4-0 and then went 1-2 so far on the road trip.  The Celtics started the season by losing their first two games and since have won 4 straight.

The Celtics had hoped to get Marcus Morris back for this game but Brad Stevens wanted him to have a full practice in before playing and so now it looks like he will return on Wednesday when the Celtics host the Kings.  Gordon Hayward is expected to miss the season but will rejoin the team as they return home to work with the coaches.

The Spurs are missing some key players also.  Kawhi Leonard (quad) is out indefinitely.  Tony Parker (quad) is expected to spend some time in the G-League on a rehab assignment before returning to the team.  Joffrey Lauvergne (ankle) is listed as  day to day.

Three of the 5 starters for the Spurs are returning from last season.  While Murray and Anderson replace the injured Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard.  There was little turnover on their roster.  One key addition is Rudy Gay.  The Celtics return just one starter and just 4 players from last season.  Both teams are very well coached.

The Celtics had Sunday off after returning from their two game road trip to Milwaukee and Miami.  The Spurs played at the Pacers on Sunday where they lost a close one 97-94.  They will return home after this game to host the Warriors on Thursday.  The Celtics will host the Kings on Wednesday.

With Hayward out, Brad Stevens has been mixing and matching with his starting lineup depending on the matchups on each opponent.  Kyrie Irving, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum and Al Horford have been the constants in the starting lineup.  He has started Marcus Smart, Daniel Theis, and Aron Baynes all with some success.  I'm listing the same starters as last game but that could easily change.

Key Matchups
(http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Horford_Al_bos1617.jpg)  vs  (https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Aldridge_LaMarcus_sas17.jpg)
Al Horford vs LaMarcus Aldridge
Aldridge is having a very good season so far, averaging 25.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.4 blocks.  Al Horford has been playing very well also, especially on defense.  He slowed Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kristaps Porzingis, holding both below their season averages.  He will try to do the same with Aldridge, who played a team high 36 minutes against the Pacers on Sunday.

(https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Tatum_Jayson_bos17.jpg)  vs  (https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Anderson_Kyle_sas17.jpg)
Jayson Tatum vs Kyle Anderson
Jayson Tatum catches a break in that the Spurs' superstar, Kawhi Leonard, is still out with a quad injury.  The Celtics rookie will instead be matched up with the Spurs 4th year player Kyle Anderson.  Anderson is averaging 8.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists.  He is also shooting 50% from beyond the arc.

Honorable Mention
Aron Baynes vs Pau Gasol
Gasol has lost a step or two from his prime, but he can still be dangerous.  He is averaging 8.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.4 blocks.  He finished with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in 30 minutes on Sunday.

Keys to the Game
Rebound - The Celtics can't score if they don't have the ball, and they will struggle when constantly giving up second chance points.  The Celtics are averaging 45.2 rebounds per game while the Spurs are averaging 49.0 rebounds per game.  The Celtics need to continue to work extra hard on the boards.  When they put forth the extra effort on the boards, that tends to spread to other areas of the game as well.

Defense - Both teams have been good defensively.  The Celtics are 2nd with a defensive rating of 95.1 while the Spurs are 6th with a defensive rating of 98.9.  Defense wins games and so the Celtics need to continue to make defense a priority.

Move the Ball - When the Celtics move the ball they get good shots and play very well.  When the ball stops moving, the Celtics struggle to score and the rest of their game slows down as well.  They need to keep moving the ball especially against a good defensive team like the Spurs.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics need to play hard and be the more aggressive team.  They have to go after rebounds, loose balls,  and 50/50 balls.  They have to be aggressive on defense and in getting to the basket.  They have to be the team that works harder and wants it more.

X-Factors
Home Game - The Celtics are once again at home where they should get a boost from the home crowd and from the familiarity of their home court.  Also, the Spurs have been struggling somewhat on the road, losing 2 of 3 games so far on their road trip.  The Celtics need to capitalize on their home court and use it to their advantage.

Coaching
- Gregg Popovich is considered by many to be the best coach in the league.  Brad Stevens is considered to be the best young coach in the league and the heir apparent to Popovich's crown.  Matchups and coaching strategy should come into play in this game.

I like it when they play the Spurs, it's a good gauge to see where they are. It's been a tough week and a half, lets if they can step up to the big boys.

Hope we win this. What's our record against the Spurs since Duncan was drafted? Its horrendous for sure, I think the only time we consistently won against them was the Big 3 era.

This should be a W. I know better than to count the Spurs out no matter who they play, but Aldridge is the only player balling since Leonard is still out and he just played 36 minutes on the first night of a back to back.

Celtics have slowed or completely shut down the likes of Joel Embiid, Kristaps Porzingis, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, so hopefully they can contain Aldridge, but he's probably the most savvy out of the bunch.

With being Kawhi out, and them coming from Indiana for the 2nd part of a B2B, the time is right to beat them. Go Celts!

Morris said he wanted to return for this game but Brad said that he wants him to have at least one full practice under  his belt first.  I'm thinking that practice will be this week so I'm guessing day to day.  It may be Wednesday or Friday but it depends on when they can get a full practice in.

He didn’t travel, so their last full practice at home was last Monday.  I think they’re having one tomorrow — you can put on your tinfoil hat if he doesn’t play Wednesday.

Just read on Boston Sports Journal that the Celtics don't have a practice scheduled for Tuesday and so they are assigning Morris to the Red Claws, who are in training camp, to get some on court work in with the team.  The Red Claws run much the same system as the Celtics and so he should get some run through of the same plays he will use with the Celtics.  I'd guess Wednesday or Friday for his return to the Celtics if all goes well with him with the Red Claws.

I'm loving how we're keeping pace early in games so far.

Last year many times the team would start real slow and fall behind (which was mitigated because of the King of the 4th last year though).

I don't have Direct TV, so I purchase it for broadband (to watch on Xbox. phone, etc.), so I have no way to access NBA TV games, without illegal streams of questionable quality.

Sometimes I really want Kyrie's shots to go down just so I can see the ball handling on the highlights later.

Semi is getting better on rotations.  His one on one defense is really good.  I was happy he attacked the rim there once.  I like his confidence in his shot but he is a little happy with it for not making any that I remember.

Rozier - 7 shots in 7 minutes
Tatum - 1 shot in 17 minutes

Someone needs to score for the 2nd unit, but Rozier shouldn't be shooting that much.  Offensively we look pretty good overall, but I'd like to see Tatum a little more involved, if need be with the 2nd unit.

4 of them came within 20 seconds. He had a pullup that was short. Someone tipped him the rebound, allowing him another shot, and then he tried a tip on that miss. Then, the next time down the court, he stole the ball from the ball-handler and missed the transition layup.

Can't fault the effort. That "7" shots is a bit inflated because of that sequence. Sometimes it doesn't go your way. One of the reasons I like CBS is that he is willing to ride with guys longer than most, even when its not going their way.

Starting to wonder if the Cleveland LeBrons were holding kyrie back from being a complete player.. ****
if you watch the Cavs, nobody plays defense, LeBron pouts to teammates and/or refs every 3 plays, and everyone must pass to Lebron even when he’s bricking shots. The coaching staff must delegate  duties to LeBron  too. It’s an environment that stifles progress

True.  They were mostly good shots too to be fair, especially the layup he happened to blow.

Man, I've been really impressed with a lot of our guys' defense, but off the bench both Semi and Theis have been very solid defensively.

I thought our added size, length, and athleticism would make us a better defensive team than last year, but we look legitimately like an elite defensive team from top to bottom.

Brad is never going to learn with this unit, is he? Why not stagger Kyrie and Al more??
They need to add another player - someone who can make 3's consistently. I assume that's what they're eventually going to use the Haywood injury exemption to go get.

Yeah, Morris will definitely help, too.

They're going to need to figure out how to score with the bench unit.  I think progress is going to be made over time.  Morris will help a ton there as a guy who can get his own shot a bit.  Between him, Brown, and Tatum I think we can figure it out.

Tatum: quiet offensively but filling it out with 10 reb, 2 ast, 3 blk, 1 stl.

This is not a standard "bad game by offensive-minded rook" line. Even when he's bad, he's pretty good.

Semi's box score doesn't look so good but he's been playing really well!

Almost nothing he's done when he's had the ball has been good so it isn't surprising.  Good defense though.

turned that around quickly!

I am not crazy about Irving's mediocre effort on defense - he allows penetration, leaves his man free on the perimeter and definitely does not hustle back in transition.

Is Stevens tough enough to make Irving play harder on defense ?

Huh? I think Irving has drastically outperformed expectations already on that side of the ball, and given what we've had instead of him the last several years, I'm completely satisfied with how he's played defensively.

I think this has been a key to the winning streak -- solid rebounding throughout the game and especially in the fourth quarter.  for years we've been getting killed on the boards by the other teams -- so many second chance points given up that are no longer occurring

Not a joke. I am basing this concern on specific plays where he surrendered the drive WAY too easily and where he completely left and ignored his man standing on the perimeter, which resulted directly in his man hitting a 3-pointer and I have seen several incidents of him  stopping short of the half-court line with the other team in offensive transition.

Do you not understand the fundamental concepts of defense ....... stop the ball, help side and rotate back to your man as the ball is moved and of course, hustle back on defense.

BTW..........I have been a Celtic fan since the mid 60's. I am no troll.

There's anecdotal for anything if you look hard enough. No doubt you could pull a few plays and note some of his bad habits, which are still there. However, he has been a good defender so far this year (not just ok). The stats back that up. Sub-100 defensive rating. Positive dpm. Top 5 league leader in steals. Makes key defensive plays. Draws charges. Blocks.

Its all there. I'm sure CBS is still coaching him up in some ways, but the defense from Irving has been more than anyone could hope for.

This board has gotten meaner. God forbid I should express some criticism, which btw, was based on direct observation from different games.

Maybe you guys don't understand what is important in defensive basketball. The casual gavone thinks if a guy blocks a shot and gets a couple of steals that he is playing good defense. Blocks and steals are small parts of great team defense. Russell was great because he and his teammates knew how to rotate as a unit, he understood positioning and when he did block a shot, he kept the ball in play - much better than sticking it in the first row.

We understand, and Kyrie was still good this game.  Is he the best on the floor?  No, but he was good and then on the other end he is one of the best offensive players in the league.  He is doing his part.

Irving will never be a great defender. And yet the Cs have like the 2nd best defensive rating in the NBA right now.

Worst scoring and shooting night but he was excellent on the boards and defensively.

He's not as bad as you make it out to be. You also brought it out at the wrong place and the wrong time. There's about  3-4 "Kyrie Irving sucks" or "I wish we had IT" thread out there to post those kinds, not in the game thread when we had the win in the bag and he was already on the bench in a game he played well defensively.

hes a better defender than IT4. and not a liability at least where teams can just post him up because of his size. he will probably never be a great defender, but he is definitely trying more this year.

Pretty dope that a rookie can have a good game and not put many points on the board. I'm really liking his all around game for being 7 games into his rookie year.

Never thought Danny's drafting record was that bad. Some hits, some misses. About the same as most GMs. And of course its a lot easier to hit with high draft picks. In the 3 recent high draft picks he has had, I think he hit and got the best player available at that pick.

Yeah it's easier to have your hit/miss ratio go up, and the hits be bigger, when you've got higher picks.

Really nice game tonight. Outplayed a quality team on both sides of the ball. Really heartening how the team's recovered from losing Hayward.

Disagreements are not "getting meaner." However, when you attack whether or not I 'understand what is important in defensive basketball," it becomes an ad hominem attack, which is an attack against the other person, not their view.

I asserted evidence to support the idea that Kyrie is not only a decent defender this season, but is a good one too. Defensive rating, defensive plus-minus, and steals all display different aspects of his defense, from his disruptiveness, to his timeliness, to his team defense.

I've seen the anecdotal evidence that he messes up on some plays, but anecdotal evidence is not a strong argument, because we are unable to reach a conclusion. You say, "I saw such and such a play that proves he is not a good defense," and then I say, "But I saw such and such a play that proves he is good at defense." Where does that leave us?

The Celtics beat the Spurs for the first time in many years, and are tied for the best record in the NBA despite a seasons’ worth of adversity in the first week.  Let’s focus on that.

I’m looking forward to seeing what Morris has to offer later this week, but one of the bright spots of his injury is that Semi has quickly proved himself to be useful.  22 minutes of solid play, his most this year.

Doesn't Kyrie lead the Celtics in deflected balls and is one of the leaders this year in that category across the league? That in itself shows that his effort and improvement are:

1)  Much better than IT's and

2) Much better than in his past seasons.

Kyrie is not the same defensive player he was in Cleveland. That's obvious thus far. He is tremendousky better defensively than the defensive player he was in Cleveland. Small sample size, but pretty much right on statistically and via the eye test.

Ad hominems plural?? a) i think there is probably a better plural form for hominen, not sure what it is, but there is one. I saw a tattoo on a girl I met once, under arm. She defintely had it... b) I think everyone knows that only one person made this personal.

Maybe your eyes have detereorated a bit after watching the C's for 50-odd years?  Because I can tell you as someone who actually played AAU ball and against future NBA players, and got on the court mainly for defense, Kyrie's defense is fine.  If you play PG in 2017, with more elite PGs than any other time in history, you're going to get beat sometimes.

Kyrie's defense is not simply fine, it's exponentially better than Thomas', even ignoring player size. Irving is actually able to stay in front of players and crowd the passing lanes -- something Thomas was shockingly bad at.

Just the giving the team the ability to not help desparately when he's targeted has to help a bunch. He does get screened easily but at least he can recover better than IT can when it happens.

Add to it the opportunistic steals and blocks and its a big change. Also doesn't hurt that he's grabbing more rebounds than IT was able to on the defensive glass.

Yeah fine is an understatement, he's been a plus on defense.  But the dude I was responding to seems to expect perfection so I understated my argument.  There is no reasonable argument to be made that Kyrie's D has been worse than 'fine'.

I'll never knock ITs effort he legitimately tried hard most of the time on defense, especially given that we know he was playing on a bad hip, while carrying a huge offensive burden.

Just couldn't bother shots/passes at his size and length and teams ruthlessly targeted him whenever they could.

I would expect a player like him to be able to compensate the lack of size with foot speed, but he appeared to lack both. You might want to chalk it up to his bad hip or increased offensive burden, or both -- but I thought the absence of instincts and inability to contribute to the defense was glaring. That wasn't to say it was due to lack of effort -- but sometimes effort can only get you this far.

Save your condescending remarks for someone else. I am sure I have been watching the Celts a lot longer than you have. Don't try to tell me what I can and can't comment on inside certain threads. Pompous jerk.

I can and I will. So if you're older does that necessarily mean you're better? That kind of thinking actually shows otherwise  ;D

Well that escalated to ad hominems rather quickly

Ad hominems plural?? a) i think there is probably a better plural form for hominen, not sure what it is, but there is one. I saw a tattoo on a girl I met once, under arm. She defintely had it... b) I think everyone knows that only one person made this personal.

There is one ****bag here.

Ad homines is certainly the thing to ink under arm.
