Another brilliant move by Ainge.

A decent young center, a first round pick, and cap space for next summer.

All for practically nothing.

two minor trades, the one today and the crawford one, were great moves

Bos sends: Crawford , Brooks, 2nd rd pick (protected)
Bos gets:   Zellar,Thorton,cle 1st rd pick(top 10 protected) , Phi 2015 1st or two high 2nd rd picks.

An absolute steal, most teams just eat trade exceptions. Danny turns this into another first, an expiring that could turn into a Jordan Crawford type trade at the deadline, and a young center.

No additional cap space was acquired in this deal.

In fact assuming we exercise Zeller's fourth year option (if it hasn't been already) we're going to lose a small amount of cap space from this deal.

Also it wasn't for nothing, eating 8 million dollars in salary is definitely a cost. It just didn't cost the team any basketball assets just payroll dollars.

Thornton's expiring $8.5 million dollar contract could free up more cap space next summer.

No. That's "cap space"  that was available with or without him.

nope, because we didn't send any salary out, jut the tpe. We are actually adding salary this year by taking on Thorton's 8.5 mil for this year , and Zellar's salary for this year, and next (if we pick up his option)

It's a good deal for us, it's a good deal for CLE if they can sign LeBron otherwise they lose.

Add Thornton, Zeller and the Cavs pick to the list of assets we got by trading Pierce and KG.  Fantastic return.  Four 1st rounders.  Probably all will be late 1sts, but that's a nice return for a couple elderly players

James young
2016 Brooklyn pick
2017 option to swap picks
2018 Brooklyn pick
Tyler Zeller
2016 Top 10 protected Cavs pick

For KG and Pierce.

Excited about this move and the future of Celtics basketball. I have been critical of Ainge in the past (really who hasn't at least once) but this was just a smart, smart move to take advantage of two desperate basketball teams.

Not true.

In addition, Boston will have over $32 million in salary coming off the books next summer (Rondo, Bass, Thornton, and Anthony), making them a prime option to sign top free agents in 2015.

The point is that the Celts would have had that amount of cap space next year regardless of the trade.  In fact, as was mentioned earlier, because we are taking Zeller in the deal, the cap space next summer is actually a little less that it would have been without the trade.

Thorton is an expiring deal and we didn't send any salary back out to acquire him.

Thus we have the same cap space next year as we did prior to this trade. We have more salary "expiring" because we have 8 million more salary. But that doesn't get us more cap space.

Expiring deals do not equal cap space.

Love this trade.

I fully expected the TPE to simply expire.
