For the past four days in particular, and maybe a little before that, not matter what device computer (3), iPads (2), phone (1) that I use, no matter what carrier I use (Comcast and Fios) and no matter what time of day with varying amounts of activity on the board, there seem to be numerous (but not every time) inordinately long delays in either 1. accesing the site, 2. loading a particular thread or even switching pages within a thread. It often happens posting too.
Anybody else experiencing this?
Anybody know of any reason for it?
-
That occurs every so often for me. It seems to wax and wane, I always just assumed it was site traffic. Also like you it is on different carriers and devices (work v. Home, etc.)

TP....thanks for the response.
It occurs at all different times of the day with differing amounts of members and non-members on the site.
Weird.
-
Yes. It has been painfully slow during the day. Computer and phone. Just the forum.
-
Been having the same problem for a while across multiple devices, multiple service providers and multiple web browsers. Concluded it was just the site.
-
Sometimes it's very slow during the game forum...
-
TPs to all....thanks for responding....not glad you guys are experiencing it too, but glad I'm not the only one.
-

I concur - there are certainly worse things to deal with, but I find I often have time to reflect on my life choices when clicking between threads.
-
Yes. I concur. Extra bad lately.

Yep. I figured it was heightened traffic due to trade season.

haha tp. it has been pretty slow here lately, but it hasn't stopped me from using the site yet.

The only Issue I have with this site is:
TOO MUCH POLITICS--!!
-
Yeah. I thought it was just the computer at work but then I had the same problem at home.
-
The only Issue I have with this site is:
TOO MUCH POLITICS--!!
That is an easy fix - just go over to one of the Trump threads and call somebody a raging lunatic and you will be rewarded with a NCE (No Current Events) label under your user name. Some of CB's brightest and finest have passed the test. I am honestly sometimes a little jealous of them.

You can also request that. No need to break a rule to be free of that off topic.
-
REfresh, refresh and refresh! LOL Did we trade anyone yet?
-
Yes. I concur. Extra bad lately.
Me too!
No enough band width ?

I know, I know - I was just kidding. Sorry if I came off as a little brash.

I was actually going to start a thread on this issue this morning. I've been having some real slow response times on the forums for about a week regardless of the time, browser, devise or internet provider.
-
This forum is crashing left and right and there aren't even any deals yet. It was down for like an hour last night.....at 2 am Boston time. Imagine if we get PG13 today, the server is going to start a fire.

Been having the same problem. TP OP.
But if you think this is bad, wait until you see tomorrow afternoon. I remember at the trade deadline last year, I was practically banging my laptop on the desk.
If I were the owner of the site, though, I'd do the same thing. Wouldn't want to pay extra all year for added space when you know that there will only be a few peak days per year.

I think the WORST moments for me was when Al Horford officially signed here (I remember originally everyone and Woj said Horford was likely going back, everyone was raging, then one guy posts "Horford to Boston" by Aldridge on Twitter, and then the forums for me stopped loading for a half an hour lol).
Oh and then when we traded for IT (people were just surprised and happy we did something at the time with like 2 minutes left in the deadline  )
-
The worst was the night they won the title in 2008. Not even close
-
Welcome to the NBA trade deadline on Celticsblog!
-
So... is there anyone who can look into those issues?
IT department or tech support we can email and complain?
-
AGAIN.......no trade deadline, no draft, no playoffs...nothing big happening.
Why is this site so so so slow to load and sonetimes refuse to?

Only 29 users on site right now(8:48).....that's not a lot of traffic.
-
Pretty sure I missed FLCelts gamethread TP because slowness...
Here's your missed TP.
This really urinates me off, though and the frustration pushes me to other sites at times.
Even sometimes in the morning when I'm updating the "Draft Prospects" thread, it takes forever to post.
-
Huge issues. When I type a post and hit send sometimes I go do a quick chore before I come back. When I click on a new thread it could take 90 seconds or more.
-
Yes
-
If we donated some money could that solve the problem?

maybe there is a data cap where the server is located
-
Yeah, its been a bit frustrating at times. Especially in the game threads when you're trying to keep up with everyone's expert analysis on the fly.
-
Yea, this has been happening for a while now.

YES!

Bizarre, right? But apparently so.

yes, has been happening for approx 1 week for me.
Very laggy. Painful.

Not being able to keep up with the game threads sometimes is a good thing. ;)
Slow for me too, quite slow this am.
-
same here. cb pages load much slower than other pages. i guess we all have to learn to be patient people. ;D
-
this site has been mad slow for me since day 1.
-
Jeff or any mods got any ideas on this?
-
It hasn't been slow than other sites for me, per se, but there are occasional lag spikes that will slow responsiveness down to a crawl and will last several minutes at least.
-
Terrible . The only site I visit that my screen sat still for minutes before changing.
It's been slow before , but never as bad as last week or two.
-
It seems much faster on my iPhone than on my computer. It's super slow on the computer.
I can't use the emoji's on my computer either. I click on them and nothing happens. They work fine on the iPhone.
-
Jeff or any mods got any ideas on this?
That would be nice.
SICK of getting this message on any device or browser or provider that I use.
Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.
This pushes me elsewhere often.
-
It has definitely gotten worse over the past few weeks. Im not criticizing the running of the site or anything, just generally curious you know?
-
it's been really slow for over a month for me.
-
I have issues on computer but not phone. As others have mentioned.
Often, in my fairly limited experience, this indicates a rogue page script (that the iOS version would not be running but a PC version would run.)
We should all be listing browser and OS. I'm having issues on OS X with Chrome.
It would be good to hear from people who are NOT having speed issues, and what browser/OS they are using. That will narrow the problem.
-
Definitely, about 3 weeks now it's been this way.

TP for the idea. I use Chrome. I'm going to try Explorer to see if there is bump in download speed.

What app are people using on their iPhones that they're not having these speed issues? I have a Chrome app on my phone, but I've just always used the regular Safari browser as long as I've had an iPhone. I tend to have the same issues on my phone as my laptop and desktop, and that's even with 5/50 mbps download and upload.
On laptop and desktop, I always use Chrome. Both computers on Windows 10, too.

I have been having consistent side speed issues with this site alone on both Mac desktop and Iphone. I ran site speed tests as well on pingdom and it ranked this site as one of top 30% worst sites for speed with main page taking over 5 seconds to load. I tried a different sb nation site and it was equally as bad with the test below. The leveraging browser caching is where I would start to improve it.
https://tools.pingdom.com/#!/dO6PNC/celticsblog.com
It ranked E and F with bad:
Minimize request size
F23 Minimize redirects
E50 Leverage browser caching
E52 Combine external JavaScript

I used this site for speed testing. Youtube was 5X faster than CB.

Posting in game threads has become ridiculous.
You comment on a play in the game, by the time its published its the next quarter.
:(
-
The first few times I had speed issues, my heart started racing.
"Something major must have happened with the C' and the site is crashing from too much traffic. Big trade? Did Brad/Danny quit or get fired? Did somebody die?"
Unfortunately now I realize it's just a regular, frequent occurrence.

It's really slow ...I waited around 30 seconds to post this message . I have newest IPad and faster speed server possible for public consumption . My posts on any of my other interests are less 2-3 seconds on any site. My eBay and a Web mail are nearly as fast as I can type.
Posting on game thread ....I get server overloaded. ...try again.......more band width ?
Something is wrong here.
-
Yeah, it's really bad on my phone. Often times I cannot even connect at all, and get an error message that reads something along the lines of, "cannot connect to SMF server".
I haven't really noticed it too much on my laptop, but every once in a while, at what I imagine are higher traffic times, it can occasionally be a bit on the slower side.
-
I hate to continue to with the complaints, but would it be possible for a mod to respond to this thread (even a, 'sorry, that' just the way it is,' would be fine)? I have been on CB forever and it has been especially bad these last few months. I have a great laptop and iPhone 7 so it isn't the hardware (I use all types of browsers). Sometimes when I click on a new topic, it is super-fast, other times it can take well over a minute.
I've been getting this message more and more often and need to restart my browser altogether:
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.
This is like the best site on the internet, but it would be great if we could deduce the problem and hopefully find a solution. I wouldn't think much of it if it were always like this, but it seems to be getting progressively worse.
-
It's been slow for Months---I'm only now posting about it...I have a Desktop PC with pretty fast TW Cable internet service--but this site is lame, speed-wise.

No answer for the laptop (I have similar issues - especially in the game threads), but I recently turned off Javascript on my Iphone Safari browser, which has helped significantly. I also refreshed the app and cleared all of the history and website data. Those changes have helped significantly, though that might be more with my own personal device/app than anything else. It was so bad I could barely even open Celticsblog on my Iphone, let alone try and post on and refresh threads
I tried the Chrome app on Iphone to see if it was faster than Safari, and it was just as bad, if not worse, than Safari for me.
-
Mine still sitting and waiting with server busy .....and a lot of tines not many people even on in middle of day.
-
Been pretty bad for a month or so.

Horrible of late!!!

Tp jambr....it's been over a month since I started this thread and there is still a lot of speed inconsistency.
I just invoked the mods in changing the thread title based on your articulation. A response from the mods would be great.
We share a lot on csblog. Cs love is cool, speed issues not so much.
Any hope on the horizon?
-
Yeah I'm getting this experience too. Just slow loading on the Forums section of Celtics Blog.
Everything seems to function normally on Pats Pulpit though, a Patriots football SBNation blog.
Maybe there's just too many "Watch Threads" going on, and then suddenly we're getting individual rookie threads hahaha.
-
More often than I'd think reasonable, my connection "times out" when I try to post to the forum (seriously). The speed of the server doesn't seem to align with the traffic from day-to-day. For a team that's currently 1st in the East? Man, unacceptable...
-

TP for being proactive. I messaged them on facebook too but no response. Only gonna get worse over the playoffs/draft season etc...
-
I don't think it's a traffic issue.
I'm in Europe and the response is very slow even when most of the Americans are sleeping.
There is like a 30 seconds response from the server most of the time. It's random here, it happens any time of the day/night.
-
I imagine running a server takes money and the like. Unless your willing to help pay for the costs or help run it, I think we should respect the mods for who they are and what they do. I do not imagine that being a mod is any of their full time jobs.
-
I'll run it up the chain of command, but server issues are unfortunately fairly frequent. SBN handles the technical support for CelticsBlog, and they're servicing hundreds of blogs. They don't have anybody on staff who is an expert in our forums software, so many fixes require them to hire contractors.
I wouldn't suspect this to be a "forever" problem, but I can understand the frustration.
-
It's been slow for months. Often takes up to a minute for a Forum page to load. Seems completely random.

TP, to RoyH for responding, Thanks.

OMG, I supposed it was only my problem because people in the US had faster Internet connections than here in Spain. Now I see it is a common issue.
My patience is challenged many times when posting, but as I've just read Roy, it's just the way it is. I'll keep dealing with it, this is one of the sites I most frequently visit and worth the "sacrifice".
-
Thanks everybody for continuing the conversation and to Roy for providing some helpful info. At least we know we are all in this together (tp Csfan ;) )
Hopefully it will work itself out - it's a wonderful site with a lot of great folks!

Me too.
TP, sahara, for bringing it up!!!
I was the OP, and did a bunch of griping.
I should have complimented the mods/whoever fixed it, to acknowledge what they did.
Big thank you to them!!!
It makes the experience here SO much more enjoyable.

Better for me too.

Not all the time, but more and more lately. It's set me to cussing a time or two.
Always worth the wait, of course, as we all know. :(

Sorry, I meant the smiley face, obviously. :)

Thanks to all the mods for looking into this. I've been getting that "SMF was unable to connect to the database" error pretty consistently for the past 36 hours. I'm assuming that it's due to a traffic spike right before the draft, but hope that someone can run this up the chain of command before Thursday.

Getting REALLY bad again.
All sorts of connection error notices when trying to use the site and navigate within it.
Doesn't happen to me on RealGM or Reddit.
Very frustrating.....anyone else?

Consistently. Its been really bad for quite awhile now. I think it will start turning people away at some point. I've started going to reddit more and more because I get that frustrating SMS error message.
-
Yep!
-
It has never been worse for me -- consistent "connection timeouts" every day, regardless of location/connection. I assume this is due to the increased traffic, but it's worse than one would expect.
-
Yeah- every person on earth is curious about what the celtics are going to do. This site is sizzling hot.
-
Really really bad the last 2-3 days.
-
It has been an issue for me too, I guess it's due to the volume of users the last couple of days.
-
As with me.
DA and his out of the blue trading has crashed Celticsblog ;D
-
Yes, and Gouki has diagnosed the cause perfectly.

Wait until Thursday night...

Yep. Sometimes especially when first getting on the slows are very slow.
-
It's weird.
It happens across devices and at random times, during high traffic and low.
Glad (actually not really) that it's not just me.
Thanks for the feedback.
-
It's ba-ack...
It's bad now. Can't imagine what tomorrow is going to be like. Hoping for the best.

Ironically, clicking on this thread was by far the fastest load time I have had all day. It has been B-R-U-T-A-L!!
-
Yes, it took sometime to post this....
-
is this net neutrality already??

Oooooooooooooooohh, it's bad!
-
Today has been especially bad. Guessing it won't get better any time soon with the trade deadline just about here.
-
Yep it’s super slow today. Better today than tomorrow.
-

I think the issue is that it will be better today than tomorrow...

Whaaaattttt doooeeeesss aaa yeeelllloooowwww liiiggghhhttt meeeeaaannnn.
-
Yeah it's horrendous.
I was using my phone in class and tried coming on here a bunch of times at one point this morning. Wifi was fast and every site was working, but every single time I tried the forums it just kept "loading" but NOTHING happened.
That was actually the first time where I tried for over an hour to come on here with NO success at all (and the "connection problems" message didn't even pop up.. the forum site simply lagged and wouldn't load for me...) :o
-
Jeff really needs someone at SB Nation look into this.
-
load-balancing to help manage high traffic days would do wonders..
or just a revamp of the remote-hosting architecture
-

People often make the claim that it is due to high traffic on the site, but I tend to think it is completely random. There are instances in mid-summer that it is super slow and instances like Game 7 of the Wiz series or when we signed Hayward that it was completely fine.
It is a wonderful site so I am hoping that it's just today that is the biggest issue (it comes intermittently all the time).
It is a real commitment just coming to this thread!

Some of the worst connection times I've seen were during USA midnight hours.
-
Yes today has been really bad.
-
This morning seems OK but the last two days I've barely been able to connect at all.
-
Today should be a heckuva test if its traffic driven. Especially this afternoon if something goes down.
-
Had all kinds of trouble getting in.
Mike
-
Someone just had to say "this morning is going good"
-
I get a "connection problem" several times a day. The connection attempts basically times out, usually works if I keep trying for a few mins.
-
Wait until we get closer to the deadline...the internet might break lol
-
Someone just had to say "this morning is going good"
I agree. It should be "this morning is going well."*
Mike
*I will now duck as you (rightfully) throw watermelons at my head.

This is like trying to get concert tickets. All kinds of fun!
Mike
-
It is absolutely terrible right now.
-
Absolutely the worst I've ever seen.
-
Garbage today of all days!
-
celticsblog.com frontpage/fanposts and SBNation articles have been fine this week, it's just this forum since yesterday morning
-
So slowww
-
Traffic of the trade deadline folks. It seems better now. I was affected too, but its going to happen when tons of peeps check the site.
-
Happens to me on a daily basis now. Terrible . I hope they do something about it.
-
It's been bad for a really long time now, but it's been unbearable over the past few days. How can this be addressed/fixed?
Heck, create a CB fund and I'll donate money to help solve this issue if needed.
-
Does database need to be fixed? Maybe storing too much data?
-

I don't think thats it. It's been three days of crap, and it's still happening on my end. Only site thats been slow to not working. And it's been on both computers.
-
Yup feeling it.
-
bandwidth?
-
It's awful.
It's also kind of annoying because sometimes you write a pretty long post/reply on here and then when you click "post" it just takes you to the "Connection Problems" page and so the reply doesn't get posted and you have to re-type it again. So annoying... :(

There are actually a couple of ways to solve this problem (took me a while to figure out):
Once you are on the 'connection problems' page, you can just keep hitting refresh and your post will eventually go through. And don't worry, it won't post multiple times.
Also, to be totally sure, you can always copy your text before you click 'post'. That way you can always paste it to a new comment without having to re-type. I have actually been doing this a lot more lately.

Still just as bad here.

Yeah I've been doing the "copy" thing quite often lately as well, but there are times I type something quick and simply forget :P

TP....I do the same.
Too bad all that extra work has to be done just to attempt to participate in discussions.
Been elsewhere (realgm and reddit) most of the night
-
This is terrible. Like 2 minutes to get into a topic. 2 minutes to post. It's like I am using a 300 baud modem.
-
It has been so bad I stopped even trying to monitor the game thread. Does anyone know exactly why this happens? I don't really know how this site is set up, is it hosted through SB Nation, or is it privately hosted? Can we all contribute $20 and get a better web host? I am sure it is more complicated than that otherwise it would have already been done I guess.
-
This is so bad.
When I click on another thread in the forums, "Page Error 404 Not Found" something like that ughhhh. And takes forever to load. DO SOMETHING MODSSS PLEASE!!
-
Yeah this has been making for a pretty bad experience as of late.
-
To be blunt, this forum software or server is TERRIBLE.
It seems like if there's more than two users on that all sorts of slowdowns and interruptions happen. Put 10 people online and you get the "server not responding" message.
I don't know why there is a forum here if CB is unable or unwilling to make it functional.
Case in point: it took 4 attempts to get this posted.
-
Maybe it’s on purpose ? To close the forum and join the main page ?
-

I don't know whether it's on purpose, but the forum has been unusable for long stretches of time in recent days. Even when it's not giving a connection error, response times have been so slow that it's been hard to post or even just read.

Yeah, lately its been like using an old telephone modem line.
-
I don't know if it'd be helpful, but a little bit of research could be presented to the appropriate party. There may be precedent, like a standard, for server quality/speed based upon the number of site visitors and/or forum use. I wouldn't mind looking into it, but I imagine there are tech guys that post here with that kind of knowledge already.

I started copying my posts before I sent them. That being said. It makes the site a lot more difficult to be on. I basically had to abandon the fantasy trade deadline league cause i couldn't stay connected long enough to respond with users.
-
no problem loading the home page or the main home page articles .
its the forum that was loading maybe 1 out of 10 refreshes. Games threads too.
its never been great ......but really poor the past week .
-
Mostly unusable today. (third straight day...)

I have received 3 separate emails from SBNation after complaining about the speed and connectivity issues. Sent them a screenshot of the Connectivity error we have all seen recently. I also told them about the multiple threads complaining.
They told me they would have their engineers looking into the problem and get back to me. The site seems better today though not 100%.
Anyone else noticing an improvement?
-
I've only had a couple of connection errors today, not as bad. I received an email today stating the same -- their engineers are looking into the problem, and they will be in touch.
-
Much better today!
Will have to check during game thread.
Or ask DA for a trade so we can check the connection in peak times.
-
I received an email today saying they get it and they're definitely working on the problem with their engineers.
-
It sux
-
often slow with forum
-
100% better for me right now.
-
Have had no problems today.
It's like this site has new life again
-
Earlier in the day, I kept getting the connection error.
-
so far, so good...today. ;D
-
It continues to be the slowest site I visit. :'(
-
Been much better over the last 24 hours
-

It was good for a few days and then yesterday I had problems again. Today it seem ok. We'll see how long that lasts.
-
Where is everybody hanging out these days I'm tired of this community forum being like "Never in Service Pervous Ellison"

Speed has been fine for the past 2 days or so. When things slow down we all go get a life.
-
Didn't have a problem for a while and then the last few days were back to being nearly impossible like it was a couple months ago. It seems ok today but I wanted to complain about this yesterday and was unable to because of the connection errors.
-
The last couple of days reminded me of the days us trying to sign KD.
Foreverload!
-
Yeah, a terrible connection and slow. Heck, what are paying all this money to cb for each month if they can’t provide..... oh..wait a minute.
-
at first i thought it was me setting my DNS to 1.1.1.1, then i removed it and it was still slow
-
I'm guessing here...there aren't any ads on the forum...thank God, thus, they only have one dedicated repairman who is semi retired, lives in a trailer outside of Tulsa and had to be with his mother the last week (during the Raptor's game)?
We are not a revenue generatin' opportunity.
-
If it is a money issue, I am recommending they put a few tasteful ads on this forum to make it more of an opportunity. We cannot expect to have a fast site and them pay for it without generating any money back.
I think we would all accept ads if the site worked fast again.

I'm a little surprised there aren't already ads on the top of the page where it actually says "SB*NATION". I get that the forums are 'different, but it's not like it is a totally separate site or anything. Also, I still go to the main CB page before coming to the forums anyway so it's not like I don't absorb some of those advertisements anyway.
If people like me who also go to the main page decide to go to RealGM or Reddit, then the site will lose that additional traffic. Pretending there are no forums isn't helpful to them or us.
-
Lots of connection issues the past few days, either error or just not loading
My internet is fine for other sites except this one
-
It's really not too bad except for game threads or at draft time or during the free agency periods or during other times from January through December from midnight until 11:59:59 pm.
This is the slowest site I'm on. By a shot.
Put some ads up or ask for a fiver a year. Whatever.

The situation is getting worse and worse. Is it just me, or do you guys face similar problems?

The situation is getting worse and worse. Is it just me, or do you guys face similar problems?
It’s often still a headache. See:
Would it ever be possible to separate the forum from the SB Nation site? I.e. Export all the forum data and port it over to a freestanding forum site? That might require a bit of capital to do. I for one wouldn't mind a one time shared fee for all of us to allow the forum to be disconnected from SB nation. Say if we all had to pay a one time fee of $40 to pay for the migration of the forum is that just a non-starter?
This is one of my fav sites on the net, but if we all have continual issues with access then don't we need to look at other options?
Sadly, there may be a “save the forums” drive coming soon.
There will be more details to come, but long-term we have three options:
1. Take the forums independent;
2. Latch on to another blog;
3. Close down.
I really would hate to see #3. It’s like hearing that your favorite pub is being torn down and replaced by Applebee’s.

Didn't know about that. Hope everything works out.
