Here's a question regarding matching salaries in trades: Taxpaying teams are not allowed to take back more than 125% of their outgoing salary + $100,000. If a team trades away more salary than they acquire in return, is there any restriction regarding the acquired salary? To put it another way, are teams allowed to take back way less incoming salary than their outgoing salary?

Yes. They are.

Also, I don't think it's just taxpaying teams that are not allowed to take back more than 125%. It's any team over the cap. Obviously teams under the cap can receive any dollar amount as long as they are still under the cap.

1) PLEASE POST/ANNOUNCE ANY TRADES INVOLVING DRAFT PICKS IN THE DRAFT THREAD. THIS GIVES US UPDATED INFO THAT COULD BE HELPFUL FOR THE NEXT STAGES. SAVE ALL DISCUSSION FOR THE THIS THREAD.

2) PREPARE FOR FREE AGENCY. I WILL MAKE A THREAD FOR FREE AGENCY, BUT IT WILL OPEN PROBABLY ON FRIDAY NIGHT AT LIKE 8EST. "PLAYERS" WILL MAKE DECISIONS QUICKLY. BE READY TO SEND THOSE OFFER SHEETS OVER OR YOU MIGHT MISS OUT.
How much is our salary cap going to be? There is no official number announced yet. No one can possibly know the final number because of the pandemic.

Several other figures are dependent on the movement of the salary cap from year to year.

tax line ?
luxury-tax threshold ?
Standard MLE ?
Taxpayer MLE ?
Room MLE ?
Bi-Annual Exception ?

Fwiw, here's a projection from February 18, 2020. Can't find a more recent one.

https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2020/02/mid-level-bi-annual-projections-for-202021.html

I'd like us to use shamsports capulator as our baseline for everything, as I announced on the first page. Whatever numbers they employ are the ones we will use. That way its standard and we can use a tidy tool to keep track of our teams.

In a simultaneous trade, different rules applies to taxpaying and non-taxpaying clubs. A non-taxpaying team can trade one or more players and take back….

- 175% of the outgoing salary (plus $100K), for any amount up to $6,533,333.
- The outgoing salary plus $5MM, for any amount between $6,533,333 and $19,600,000.
- 125% of the outgoing salary (plus $100K), for any amount above $19,600,000.

Not sure what happens if a team trades away more salary than they acquire though. :-\

I would imagine most of the trade machines follow these rules. Thanks for including it in the thread though.

Of course they do. Problem is, we can't use the trade machine cause it's not updated yet. We are simulating the 2020-2021 season. The trade machine uses data from the 2019-2020 season.

Question about cap space involving trades:

I know about the 125% rule (where a team is limited to 125% + 100.000 as incoming salary to outgoing salary) when a team is out of cap space and when a team has enough cap space they can just use that to absorb a bigger contract.

How does it work when you potentially make a trade where you get more than 125% back as incoming salary, but where you have some cap space to absorb a part of that?

Example:

A team has $10M in cap space. They trade away $20M and want $35M back, is that allowed? (absorb 10M + 20M*125% = 10M + 25M = 35 M)

From when I've played with trades in the past, I don't think so, but I will defer to saltlover on this. Run the trade through tradenba and if it doesn't work, I don't think it can be done. In order to receive more than the 125%, I think you have to absorb all of it to create a trade exception for the other team.

Let's say you want to trade for 2 players. The first one has a salary of 10 million and the second one has a salary of 25 million. What you can do is break the transaction down into 2 separate trades.

1. Absorb the 10 million via cap space (you'd have to renounce all cap holds first). This would create a trade exception for the other team equal to their outgoing salary + $100,000.
2. Match the remaining 25 million via the 125% + $100,000 rule.

As far as I know, the above scenario isn't valid if your target is one player whose salary is 35 million, because you can no longer break down the transaction into 2 separate trades.

Thanks for your response. I had thought about that theory, just didn't know whether it would be allowed to work around the rules like that.

The Sacramento Kings are still open to obtain salary in exchange for picks if there's a team around that wants to get rid of a bad contract.
