I’m pretty happy with the LeBron/Admiral combo and an early 3rd rounder coming up. There’s a couple of guys I’m really excited about still on the board.

Chicago and Portland look strong to me.  The Lakers have potential as they have 2 third rounders.  The late rounds will prove a lot.

Edit:  Dallas looks solid to me as well upon checking again.  I’m most interested to see what San Antonio does in the next few rounds.
Everyone looks strong to me. I have like 4 teams I really like, 6 teams I really respect and 2 I think have great potential.  Not sure anyone is head and shoulders ahead or behind at this point. 2 teams have 2 third rounders. That could be key.

I didn’t realize that another team had 2 third rounders, that’s huge.  At the end of this there are going to be 12 absolutely loaded teams, it will be difficult to decide who has the best as it will be super close.  I’m really just enjoying this draft and the basketball talk in the summer.
Yup.

Philadelphia with picks 1 and 4 to add to Larry and the Mailman.

LA with picks 9 and 11 to add to KG and Steph.

My thoughts on the 2nd round:

Pick 1: Oscar Robertson.
The original king of the triple-double alongside the Big Fundamental. I like this foundation a lot. Timmy was able to anchor one of the great defensive dynasties, and we know Oscar can win alongside great big men. I’d like to see this team nab a shooter in the 3rd round.

Pick 2:Kevin Garnett.
Love KG. Think his prime was as good as any 4 to have played the game. Defence, intensity, playmaking, rebounding, leadership and good scoring.

Pick 3: Kevin Durant.
Next to Bill Russell KD is an awesome choice. We’ve seen KD absolutely thrive alongside lesser defensive specialists both in OKC and Golden State.

Pick 4: Steph Curry.
This is who I was hoping would fall to me. Similar to KD in that he’s thrived alongside defensive passing big-men, but none who could defend as well as KG, let alone score or rebound.

Pick 5: Hondo
Hondo next to Kawhi is lots of fun. Great defender, playmaker, scorer and an unreal endurance athlete. Will take lots of the stress of Kawhi, and those two are a nasty defensive duo.

Pick 6: Jerry West.
Can’t go wrong with the Logo. We saw what he could do with non-prime Wilt, so it’s not a stretch at all to say he and Shaq could kill it.

Pick 7: Moses Malone.
Really amazing peak. That early 80’s period saw Moses dominate the glass and the interior at levels that compare with most bigs. Magic will always feed him too

Pick 8: Dirk Nowitzki.
For most teams I thought Dirk would have been a reach, but alongside Wilt you have all his weaknesses covered. Wilt is a top 2 rebounder of all time, a great defender and a great passer. Like the duo.

Pick 9: Bill Walton.
That title run led by Walton is one of the all-time unlikely champions, and Walton’s stellar play was behind it. 18/14/5 with elite defence is a really nice piece alongside MJ.

Pick 10: Dr J.
I like it. Dr J could do it all inside, and has a really varied career. Feel like picking up some spacing should be high on the list, but if so watch out.

Pick 11: David Robinson.
I’m a huge fan of the Admiral. Amazing defender, scorer and rebounder. The destruction he and LBJ could cause is a lot of fun
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

Outside of my team, of course, I think I like Atlanta the best.  I really like the strong big man pairing of Wilt and Dirk.  2 guys that spent most of their career doing all of the work, but that both found great team success when finally getting competent teammates a bit later on (i.e. showing they could work well with others).

Detroit is the most fascinating team to me with the 2 SF's who I think were both taken too highly.  But solid outside of the box thinking like that could yield tremendous results as the draft goes on.  Curious to see how that team takes shape.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

I like your team a lot, Moses is the most dominant rebounder I’ve seen and Magic is such a matchup nightmare.  I know a perfect third option for that team that would make it even better so I’m extremely interested in seeing how you go in the next few rounds.

I still have the best duo on paper.

Unstoppable offense and defense.

Wow Gouki, tell me how you really feel lol. Jk you're right, I'm gonna need to get some spacing. I really REALLY wanted Dirk, so Dr. J was mostly a BPA pick at that point. But anyways, Karl Malone was an great pick for you, amazing value. If I didn't draft a big in the first round, I'd have taken him.

I can't help but think most of these duos could really use a high quality three point shooter. Don't care what position that shooter plays, but a lot of these teams could use one to create optimal spacing, as well as to take advantage of the three point rules.

Or is the third round not the round to address this need?

Talent wise it is probably too early but at some point fit has to come into play.  I think round 3 is too early as there are plenty of great shooters to be had in the later rounds.

I also always struggle with the older players.  Take Oscar and West for example.  How do you really grade them as shooters.  To me they both clearly would have been elite shooters if that was the style of play in their era but other people may look at them differently.  So you just don't know.

True. Another need for a lot of the teams, especially the ones that went with the dual bigs in the first 2 rounds, is perimeter playmaking, which I have a feeling might be major theme in the next round.

There has been a plethora of good 3pt ahooters in nba history.

Shouldnt be too hard a role to fill if people draft correctly.

I am expecting a few pgs to go next round.

Or based on bpa those picks might come in the 4th and 5th rounds.

There has been countless super capable playmakers in nba history that could pilot any of these teams. But true transendent talents are getting much thinner.

I am going to rate West as an elite three point shooter. Prolific and efficient. Which will raise his already terrific efficiency levels even higher and make West one of the finest offensive players in this league.

Not sure about Oscar. A good shooter but not high level is my thinking on him. Maybe that is unfair though. His FT% is fantastic. His midrange was fantastic. He could shoot the longer two if he needed to (but always wanted to get closer for a higher percentage shot instead).

And he such a hard worker in developing all of his fundamentals and being as well-rounded a player as he could be. Plus, he'd probably need the threat of the 3 to help open up his driving more so he work hard at it (more driving in today's game than post ups so a change there for him and needs the 3 to help improve that). There is something about Oscar where you I don't feel he'd accept being anything less than good-to-great at the 3. Too stubborn. Too hard a worker. Maybe good efficiency but not as prolific in terms of attempts? I dunno.

......

I don't see Oscar taking as many 20+ footers as West in old videos of the two. That is why I'd rate Jerry ahead of Oscar.

Not that there is much video on Oscar.

True, although I dunno if I like the draft positions I got. The gap from the beginning of the 3rd round to the end of the 4th round feels rather big. May have to test the waters on trades...
