Ok I get it. 7&8 have “2 opportunities” meaning the loser in their knockout game still has another chance to advance. So basically the 7th and 8th seeds are on equal footing no matter what their win-loss records are? That’s unfair for the 7th seed?

I blame this loss on the refs horrid offensive Goaltending call---Because the Blazers bench screamed, and the ref reacted to their scream and called it....We would have been down ONE freaking Point on the TT put back---Of course, no replay (ridiculous)--and Blazers hit 2 3-pointers after this Nonsense....What is the use of a coaches challenge, when you cannot use it on goaltending calls--???

It wasn't even close to an offensive basket interference....AWFUL
Larry Bird was Greater than you think.

Season in serious jeopardy right now if Brown/Tatum are not 100%. Real danger Cs miss the playoffs.

Might be a good thing for this team. Let it be a learning lesson that they should never crap up games against sub .500 teams, and always play at maximum effort and to never play for only one half. Respect the opponent whether they are extremely good or extremely poor.

I agree. Those two OKC losses are already haunting us, with the standings this close. I think JB should sit a couple of games out if needed. We have Fournier and Nessie to somewhat cover for him. We need our guys healthy for the playoffs.

With the play in format in place, the 7th and 8th seeds are practically the same right? They just need to win once to officially get the 7th seed? Am really not a fan of this format.

I believe it's a best of 3 series for the 7 vs 8 and 9 vs 10:
Winner of 7 vs 8 clinches 7th seed.
Loser of 7 vs 8 hosts the winner of 9 vs 10.
Winner of that clinches 8th seed.

So I think even if you have like a .520 record, you can still lose out to a sub .500 team but only in the East cuz "the East is weak." I don't like the play-in tourney either but it excites other fans and the rest of the league.

Though too bad at the end of the day, the 7th and 8th seed in the East will get rekt in the first-round.

It’s not best of 3.  It’s single game “series”.  7 hosts 8.  Winner advances, loser hosts the winner of 9 vs. 10.

Right now we are 7 and Char is 8
we would play them, if we lose we would get the winner of Indiana-Washington.  I wouldn't want to play Wash in a one game elimination series. uggg

I think so as well.  So as the 7th seed you lose nail biters to the 8 seed and one other game and you are out.  I really think the winner of the 9/10 game should have to win 2 in a row off the loser from the 7/8 game.  That seems more reasonable.  This current process makes it too easy for an under achieving team to win two games and then are in the playoffs.  I think they should have to win a 3rd game.

I really don’t get the logic of this play in format. Penalizes the 7th and 8th seeds. I mean all NBA teams played under the same circumstances, why not jus stick to the top 8 format?

The refs made a lot of really bad calls in this game but I put the main blame on Smart, Thompson and Brown shooting a putrid 11-42 when the rest of the Celtics were all on fire shooting. Even with Brown and Smart shooting 4-18 from 3 the Celtics still shot 51% from 3. We wasted the best shooting night we've had all year.

Agreed! Specially if the 9th and 10th seeds are multiple games back (say 5 games) of the 8th seed. Why give them a chance at all?

I am not sure either.  Money from extra games?  It doesn't seem like this would stop the tanking at all.

I really don’t get the logic of this play in format. Penalizes the 7th and 8th seeds. I mean all NBA teams played under the same circumstances, why not jus stick to the top 8 format?

2 main reasons:

1) Before the season began, and at the beginning of the season, it wasn’t clear if teams would play all the games.  It was very easy to imagine where a team gets shut down for a month and plays 10-15 fewer games than another team.  The play-in format was one way to deal with a potential uneven schedule allowing teams to decide it in the court against each other.

2) Having lost 10 games to the season, and a lot of revenue due to reduced/eliminated fans, the NBA needed revenue of some sort, so getting a couple of extra games in provides money and satisfies media partners who also lost a bunch of games last year.  Especially if fans can be at the play-in games, it can be a revenue boon to the 7th seed.

I think that Reason 1 made them look for a solution, and Reason 2 made it happen.

All being said, if the Celtics do end up in a play-in as a 7th seed, they better have a must-win mentality. Otherwise, better win the rest of their games and hope Miami drop games.

Winning the 2 upcoming Miami games is very important for their playoff aspirations.

If the Cs win all their games, Miami will drop games...we play them twice

Oh perfect. Yeah, I see it, b2b home games against Miami next week with a day break in between. Unfortunately, the Sunday showing is a morning/early national TV game.
