The great Kenny Rogers (The Gambler, Lucille, Coward of the County, Don’t Fall in Love with a Dreamer, She Believes in Me,....) has passed at 81.

Hits with the First Edition in the 60s like Ruby, Don’t Take your love to Town, Something’s Burning. Then a stellar solo career for 4 decades.   Also fast food restauranteur with namesake restaurants across the USA.

Had 11 top 10 Billboard singles.
21 #1 on Country charts .

Too bad. RIP, Kenny.

On Saturdays, in the late 70's and early 80's, there were always chores that had to be done so my siblings and I did them and it took several hours. While cleaning, my mom would always put The Gambler on the stereo. 40 years later I can still sing every song on that album verbatim. It was etched into my memory forever.

I hated it at first but then grew to appreciate it and then love it and started listening to other Kenny Rogers stuff. All really great music. The man was a legend even back in the 80's.

RIP, Kenny, the other cooler Mr. Rogers from my upbringing.

Very cool story. TP.

When I was a kid, my parents pretty much listened only to country music in the car—I disliked most of it then, but I appreciate (and like) much of it now, and that includes Kenny Rogers. "The Gambler" is one of the most iconic country songs, and certainly the one I know best and remember from my childhood (grew up in the '80s).

Some of my favorites:
Coward of the County
Lucille (you picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille)
Ruby, Don’t take your love to town
Don’t fall in love with a dreamer

He was a smart music businessman I think. Knew what he could do and couldn’t - played to his strengths and got about as much out of his music career as he possibly could have.  A lot of people rolled their eyes when hid songs came on, but before you knew it you found yourself listening and sometimes singing along.
