Title: What's the finest piece of sports philosophy?
Post by: Eja117 on November 29, 2017, 09:55:23 PM
What would be the best or most applicable philosophical statement to come out of the world of sports? This is different than just a response or quote. The best response was clearly when Gronk flexed in response to Deflategate questions.

I went with It is what it is, because I suspect people might still be saying that a thousand years from now and might be more likely than any of the other concepts to last a very long time. It also seems easy to apply universally.

Larry Bird's "Push yourself again and again. Don't give an inch until the final buzzer sounds" is pretty good.  If you put forth maximum effort you can usually live with the results, win or lose.

Or you can be like this guy:

A couple I would add:

MJ - "I've failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

Gretzky - "You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take."

KG - "Anything is possible!" (Might be reaching a bit  ;))

You never say sorry. You never make excuses. ‘I’ll get it next time coach’ is the only acceptable response.

Yogi is the GOAT.

Ali had some good ones.

Kyrie is a blue-chip philosophical prospect.

I like these two and they are kind of variations of the same idea.

Quote
“Things worthwhile generally don’t just happen. Luck is a fact, but should not be a factor. Good luck is what is left over after intelligence and effort have combined at their best. Negligence or indifference are usually reviewed from an unlucky seat. The law of cause and effect and causality both work the same with inexorable exactitudes. Luck is the residue of design.”- Branch Rickey

I think this can be summed up as  " Luck is the residue of preparation."  Jack Youngblood.

I went with Herm's "You play to win the game."

It's sort of a variation on "Keep it simple, stupid," or that David Foster Wallace speech about, "This is water." It's a reminder to stay mindful of the obvious stuff and not miss the forest for the trees. It's about priorities. I think it's endlessly applicable to any situation and something a lot of people would benefit from.

You miss 100 percent of the shots....excellent. I forgot that one. I actually thought that was Doc Rivers.  I was sorta stretching for a hockey one

Funny!...but worth a TP?...barely, actually maybe a couple.

Now bear in mind Yogi Berra's golf quote, and as a golfer, my favorite:

"90% of short puts don't go in...." Haha...use that all the time on the course.

I still pick a Brad Stevens nugget from his first year in Boston, which we all should remember:

"Never stop believing, Baby!"

Former Boston Celtics Coach Glenn "Doc" Rivers - as he gave KG a handshake as he was coming to the bench during our HISTORIC come from behind victory in Game 4 2008 NBA Finals.

The man practically willed that team to victory.

Will always love and appreciate what he did in BOS.

‘Take this down. My name is Shaquille O’Neal, and Paul Pierce is the (very long expletive) Truth. Quote me on that, and don’t take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn’t know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the Truth.’

None other than the Incomparable Shaquille O'Neal - as he gave our PP34 his enduring nickname.
