Robert Williams III is the Celtics lone pick from this season's draft.  He is a lottery talent, but slipped all the way to 27 where the Celtics grabbed him.  He has some maturing to do but the talent is there.
Semi Ojeleye is entering his second season in the league.  He showed some promise in his first season with the Celtics, playing in 73 regular season games and 17 playoff games, where he started 3 games.  He averaged 2.7 points and 2.2 rebounds his first season.
Guerschon Yabusele quickly became a fan favorite in his first season, spending time with both the Celtics and the Red Claws. He played in 33 games with the Celtics and averaged 2.9 points and 1.6 rebounds.

Zhaire Smith was the 16th pick in the draft by the Phoenix Suns but was traded on draft night to the Sixers for the 10th pick (Mikal Bridges).  He averaged 11.3 points, 5 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks last season at Texas Tech.
Demetrius Jackson was the 45th pick in last year's draft by the Boston Celtics.  He played mostly with the Maine Red Claws and was waived in July after his rookie season.  He then signed a 2 way contract with the Houston Rockets last season.
Landry Shamet was the 26th pick in the 2018 draft by the 76ers.  He is a 6'4" guard out of Wichita State.  He averaged 14.9 ppg and 3.2 rpg last season.  He is a 3 point threat.

We finally get to see some Celtics basketball, although of the Summer League variety.  This will be the first of several games between the Celtics and 76ers.  We will likely face them in the preseason and regular season and post season as both teams seek to take over the top spot in the Eastern Conference with LeBron's exit to the West.

The Celtics should have several players to impress fans in this game.  Semi Ojeleye and Guerschon Yabusele, both of whom played with the Celtics last season should headline the Celtics team. Semi became a regular rotation player by the end of last season and even started 3 playoff games.  It will be good to see how he has progressed.

Also playing are Kadeem Allen and Jabari Bird were signed to 2 way contracts last season and split their time between the Celtics and the Red Claws.  Trey Davis was a star on the Red Claws last season and even put up a 57 point game for them.  Jarell Eddie played for the Celtics on a 10 day contract last January.

Of course, all eyes will be on Robert Williams III.  After a rocky start, sleeping through his introductory phone conference and missing his first Summer League practice after missing his flight to Boston, he has impressed in subsequent practices.  Now is our chance to see him in person.  Hopefully he won't disappoint.

All about them bigs. Be nice to see some NBA(ish) basketball, and Rob Williams in green.

Last summer we got to see that Jaylen was working on his handle, which bore fruit as the year went on. Want to se Semi hitting his shots and attacking close outs; Yabu having some idea where he’s supposed to be, and whatever they have RW teed up to do. Honestly, just seeing some focused effort from the new guy in D will probably make everybody feel better.

He’s 28, almost 29, been a pro for seven years, and he’s under contract. They’ll just fold him into practices and regular work.

I want to see Semi.

His development could make Morris expendable.

Yabu could potentially play the same roll as Theis if he figures things out.

They’re players you really hoped the Celtics would draft even if you knew that the player wouldn’t be available during a Celtic selection or would have been a major overdraft.

Williams not in starting lineup.  Yabu is the small ball center.  He missed an open 3 that was the shot he wanted.  Let's see what he can do in Summer league action.

It wasnt just the shot from Tatum it was his reaction to the shot. He told everyone to chill  with the universal cool down sign.

And drafted to be the potential Kryptonite to Durant.  Danny just didn't anticipate Boogie going to the GSW so he's going to have to come up with a Plan B.

He’s the best player on this summer roster, which is good. He’s played real games he should be better than most summer league players. But you can’t put too much into summer stats. He’s not going to be getting those kind of looks in a real NBA game. It’s concerning that he’s only 1 for 5 from 3. That’s horrible. And those are the shots he needs to make.

Got smoked on defense, very slow to react, and he got blocked, then proceeded to brick a shot after. He did settle down, and had a nice euro step for a easy lay in. I still like Uthoff, but just looks sluggish.

wow korkmaz went off for 40 but celtics still prevail!

yabu had an impressive closing spurt, scoring 5 points in back to back plays late and kind of sealing that win.

before yabu went off #63 Haassan Martin had an impressive game though with hustle and scoring some important 2 and 1's.

fun game to watch.  glad to see the young C's closing out the win!

You're getting annoying but I'll answer.  They want him to focus on his shooting sessions with Drew Hanlin.  There really isn't much upside to him playing summer league and quite a bit of downside.  If you recall, he got injured last summer league and ended up missing a few weeks.

His trade value is low.  Shooting well in summer league wouldn't affect that.  Shooting poorly could adversely affect whatever confidence he has built back.  Suffering even a minor injury would set back his recovery.  They need to get Fultz in the best position physically and mentally for him to succeed before they put him on the court in a competitive game.

The Yips can be quite serious.  MLB pitchers who can no longer throw strikes consistently.  An MLB catcher who can't throw the ball back to the pitcher on the mound.

Just some quick notes:

  • Bird looks pretty good, but I'm afraid his frailty is always going to be an issue.  He just doesn't have the look of any sort of sturdiness aboout him.
  • Semi looked solid, as we should have expected.  I'm sure Brad was happy to see that.
  • Yabu reminds me of Perk.  Odd run, awkward looking when moving on the court, both with and without the ball, powerfully built.  I'm not equating them, but I do find that similarity interesting.  On a more game-specific note, he'd better get that shot to fall more often, if he wants to stay in the NBA.
  • Williams sucked! was awesome! showed the sort of ups and downs we'd expect in a first outing.  The knee report I heard from the commenters on tv didn't seem like a problem, so here's to him playing tomorrow without those first game jitters.

That seems like enough for a start.
I'm not so optimistic about what we saw. Yabu still looks raw, hasn't grown as much as he should have. I also think Semi didn't really show us what we needed to see. He was better attacking the rim, but I don't think that will ever be an important part of his game in the NBA. He needs to be able to hit the three, and he still can't. It's only the first game, but it's worrisome. If he can't hit threes then his ceiling is low and he will be of limited value.

Yeah it still baffles me that Ainge didn’t win executive of the year. He (1) brought in Hayward in free agency, (2) swindled Philly out of the Sacramento pick to trade down and get our guy who we were taking all along, and (3) brutalized Cleveland by nabbing Irving for spare parts. How any other team even comes close to that is beyond me.

Actually, that's a pretty good start. The 2nd year guys looked like they were much improved from their first SL, Bird showed he's probably worth the QO we gave him, and RW looked like a rookie 1st round big instead of Fab Melo.

Agree on Yabu.  He still looks a bit out of control and really needs to hit 3's consistently if he is going to take them.  He reminds me of Big Baby Davis with the way he can use his girth to get where he wants.

Disagree on Semi.  Like Yabu, he still needs to hit 3's consistently but I like the way he attacks the rim more aggressively, and his defense is still solid.

We know Semi can defend, so no surprise there. I don’t think it means much that he was able to attack the rim in a summer league game, the defense is terrible in summer league. To be more than a fringe player in the NBA he needs to be able to hit threes. The fact that he does not seem to have improved on this is concerning.

Most of Korkmaz' outside field goals came with Semi guarding him.  He gave him too much space and didn't move laterally very well, even got outfaked.  This is a concern.

These comments are baffling... Are you suggesting that you can discern any improvement/lack of, in Semi's 3 point shooting, in 25 minutes of one summer league game?? Also, you do realize the season ended 4 weeks ago, right? Did you expect some type of incredible jump in his game since then?

I love this blog, but some of these takes are pure nonsense.

Yabu had seven fouls in 23 minutes. That is ... not good.

He does not know where he’s supposed to be, and although he moves well for a guy who’s 6’8” 280#, he doesn’t move well for an NBA player.

Thanks for sarcasm, but so sorry your are baffled.  Perhaps I can help you.

I was actually the one who was claiming that Semi looked real good in the 1st game.  Then bellerephon pointed out that we can expect that kind of performance from a guy who started playoff games only a month ago.  So what did I do?  I went back and watched the replays again and saw a concerning issue that explained (at least in part) why an opposing player went off for 40 points.  If you've got a better explanation, I'd love to hear it.

SUMMER LEAGUES MEANS NOTHING. each and every year it is loudly proclaimed how useless summer league is in predicting whether a player will be good or not. (whether they will stink is another matter.)

yes, each and every GAME herds of us cbers dispatch players and pass final judgement on young kid after young kid. final. done. finished. kaput. written off. adios muchacho.

Guiding principles of Summer League:

1. Summer league means nothing in a normal sense, but that doesn't mean there aren't takeaways.
2. If a player struggles in year two, its normally not good.
3. If a player has a lot of turnovers and/or bad shots, it can actually be a good thing. It shows confidence and the ability to try to learn.
4. You can tell more about a player's athleticism in summer league than anything.

Williams in addition to his obvious athleticism showed good decision making and court awareness in his limited minutes.

Example his first miss was off a nice baseline move that was necessitated by shot clock running out. Got it off just in time. It was a nice athletic play and showed great court awareness.

Great catch Surferdad!!!  I DVRed the game and have only watched part of it.  I think that Semi is MUCH more suited to guard SF's than SG's and PG's, but he is TRULY best at using his strength and guards BIGS!!!

And Korkmaz plays SG even though he is listed in the box score as a PF:

Furkan Korkmaz is a Turkish professional basketball player for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association. He was selected 26th in the 2016 NBA draft. At a height of 6 ft 7 in, he mainly plays the shooting guard position. Wikipedia

Asking Semi to lock down outside, hot shooters is about as brilliant as when we TRIED to make Avery Bradley a PG!!!!  That being said, Semi has a MUCH better chance of guarding guys on the perimeter than AB did of becoming a competent PG:-)))

To be more than a fringe player in the NBA he needs to be able to hit threes. The fact that he does not seem to have improved on this is concerning.
Fair enough.  Let's see how he does tonight.  He might have felt undue pressure to lead this junior squad.
Just watched the 9-minute replay of offensive highlights:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ABFeJUi7_A
Most of Korkmaz' outside field goals came with Semi guarding him.

Im not sure where you are getting sarcasm. I feel I was very direct with my criticisms.

" To be more than a fringe player in the NBA he needs to be able to hit threes. The fact that he does not seem to have improved on this is concerning." -- Explain to me, and be specific, how this is not a scolding hot and incredibly reactionary take.

Semi started games IN THE PLAYOFFS for a team that was an average shooting night from the NBA finals. I am fascinated about how anyone could disrespect this man by allowing the word fringe anywhere near him.

I dont think i need to say much more.

I am not concerned by an end of the bench player scoring 40 points on a man who flexed his combat muscles on some of the best players in the league, when the games meant something. The guy has ****ned combat muscles the size of Delaware.

Go get some cold water and cool off those spice-takes

To be fair the criticism of Semi that you quoted here is from me, not Surferdad. I stand by my criticism, however. Semi's playing time was largely a result of injuries, if the Celts had a full roster he would not have played much in the playoffs IMHO. He proved that he can play defense at the NBA level, he deserves respect for that. But he also showed that he had nothing to add on the offensive end. That will limit him to a fringe role unless he can improve.

In the first summer league game he showed more ability to attack the rim than he showed in the NBA last year, but in truth I don't think that will translate to the NBA where the defense is much better. Especially since he hasn't shown he can hit the three. Defenders won't need to close out on him and can sit back and keep him out of the lane. Furthermore, he's not really all that good at attacking the rim anyways. He did it in a summer league game against guys who won't make the NBA playing terrible defense.

I stand by my comment that his poor three point shooting is a concern. I will concede that it is only one game, but this is his pattern. He shot poorly last year from three. He has given us no reason to think that is going to change. Maybe it will, but until I see him consistently hitting the three, I will be skeptical that he is anything more than an end of the bench defensive sub.

Finally, I don't see him playing enough next season to grow very much. Right now he is the 11th man on the roster at best (Irving, Brown, Tatum, Hayward, Horford, Baynes, Smart, Rozier, Theis, Morris) and could possibly drop further if Wanamaker proves he can play or if the Celts add someone who can shoot. How many minutes can he reasonably be expected to get?

good gracious gobs of goo guys and gals. here we are again, yet once more, revisiting something that is obvious to each and everyone here.

Yes; You can’t overreact to summer league, but they are playing basketball out there and so you can learn some things. When we saw Jaylen Brown dominate last year, and show how he was working to improve his handle and expand his game, that was a pretty good indication of what was going to come. When we saw Jayson Tatum win the first game on a last-second step back, and flash a true three-level game, that was a pretty good indication of what was going to come. You couldn’t know for sure, but those things seemed likely to translate.

When I see a huge player like Yabu racking up foul after foul and having trouble adjusting to the agility of other players, I’m reasonably sure that’s also a sign of things to come. League’s not over; maybe he’ll improve. Maybe it’s another year of play. But the early signs are not encouraging.

Let me add one more thing regarding my take on Semi. In order to even make an NBA roster a player usually needs to have at least one skill that can make a difference. It could be defense, or three point shooting, or running the point. But that will only get a guy on a roster. To actually get real playing time a player needs to combine that difference making skill with the ability to contribute at least a little bit in other areas.

Let's look at Smart. His defense is his difference making skill. He can't shoot at all. But he can run the point, start the offense, throw lobs, and run pick and roll. Also consider Baynes. He plays good post defense, that's his difference making skill. But he can shoot a bit, set picks, and has even been able to hit the three.

Semi plays good defense, but that's it. That was enough to get him on the floor when the Celts were suffering with injuries, but with a healthy roster he simply doesn't bring enough to the table to deserve significant time. If he can add a three point shot that would change matters. But we simply haven't seen it at this level.

I lost interest when Williams taken out.

Hope nothing serious.

Same. Spoiled after the last two SL with #3 picks. I started watching Big 3 Basketball after he checked out... Scalabrine and Ricky Davis were playing during the first hour.  ;D

I think that is all correct. It’s surprising; he was a decent shooter in college and he has shown flashes, but he can’t seem to do it consistently so far. If he was a good three-point shooter and at least had some ability to cut or attack closeouts he would be a useful player. If he could convince the coaching staff he was going to grow into the player they would have some flexibility on the roster; I could see them letting Morris go for future assets or room under the tax, for example. But at this point he is strictly bench depth or maybe a Giannis specialist.

Bird looks pretty good, but I'm afraid his frailty is always going to be an issue.  He just doesn't have the look of any sort of sturdiness aboout him.

Are you serious, Reggie Miller and George Gervin looked anorexic and they did fine.  It's not the old NBA where hand checking could stop guys who were skinny.

Yes, I'm serious.

Then, we were VERY fortunate for those injuries, as I firmly do NOT think we would have beaten the Bucks without Semi's stellar D on Giannis!!!

I totally disagree. If we had Hayward I think the Celtics end that series sooner.
