Game Notes
The Celtics welcome the East leading and undefeated Milwaukee Bucks into the TD Garden tonight. The Celtics are riding a three game winning streak which has seen them break out of the offensive funk they were in with Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving starting to show they are coming back nicely from their injuries. Jaylen Brown also came out of his early season shooting slump and has played All-NBA quality defense as well. The Celtics are hoping to shut down Milwaukee and take their momentum on the road as they head out on their first extended road trip of the season. Boston will play their next five away from the friendly confines of the Garden.

Milwaukee comes into the season with some major changes that look to have been for the better. Gone are oft injured star Jabari Parker and head coach Jason Kidd. The Bucks signed Brook Lopez, Ersan Ilyasova and Donte DiVincenzo in the off-season and brought in former Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer. Budenholzer, a former Coach of the Year, brings his San Antonio pedigree and successful track record to the Bucks.

Budenholzer has the Bucks being the only undefeated team in the NBA. Milwaukee leads the league in point differential, rebounds per game, defensive rebounds per game and three pointers made per game. They are also in the top 5 of several other offensive categories. Milwaukee is led be superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo who is having a tremendous start to his season averaging 25 points, 14.2 rebounds and 5.7 assists per game.

When last Boston saw of Milwaukee, they were sending them home in the first round of last year's playoffs in a grueling 7 game series. Boston tried to force the Greek Freak out of the paint and make him shoot mid range or three point jumpers. And except for a good series by Middleton, Boston shut down the rest of the Milwaukee roster playing them tight and running them off the three point line.

But that was last year and this year Milwaukee's high scoring offense will try to score on Boston's league leading defense. Expect to see a heavy dose of Aron Baynes on Brooke Lopez to allow Al Horford to match up with Antetokounmpo. I would also expect to see Jaylen Brown matching up a lot of the game against Khris Middleton. This should be a tough game that could be a preview of a Eastern Conference Finals. Hopefully the Celtics can continue their recent momentum and take it on their road trip.

EDIT: Jaylen Brown has been ruled out. I will guess and say Smart will start to help on Khris Middleton.

The Bucks are appearing to be a whole different animal this year, no pun intended. Looking forward to see if Al can keep slowing down Giannis, and we can avoid a Middleton explosion from downtown.

A major factor will be Jaylen's status. No doubt the C's will proceed with caution, but having/not having him available tonight will be very important to the team's success.

Celtics 101, Bucks 95

Would love to see Rozier bringing back scary Terry tonight.
will he get to start? It doesn't sound like Brown will be playing.

Chris Forsberg
Jaylen Brown on his foot: "It’s pain across the foot, so any time I put pressure down, when I take off or run, I feel pain shoot around the foot. If it was a playoff game, I’d definitely be trying to play through it, but the concern is we have an 82-game season."

We're I think 1/2 in defense, so a low-scoring game (by the current wildly distorted standards) seems pretty likely.

Other than Raptors we haven't played any top offensive team.
Teams we played rank 19-30 on offense.

That's possibly confounding though - is their offense poorly rated because they're bad at offense, or because they played good defensive teams like us? Especially with small sample sizes it can be hard to tell the difference.

Could the Bucks score 120 points tonight? Definitely. Are the Celtics going to win a game like that? In my opinion, not as likely.

Boston has been one of the best defensive teams in the league for awhile then, so it shouldn't be a huge surprise to see us win a game where we hold a solid team under 100 points.

These little hiccups early in the season are a positive in many ways (assuming the injuries aren't serious).

It gives Stevens a chance to mix and match more, without worrying about offending people. I think we are very far from having our best lineup/rotation pattern identified.

Sorry I've been a bit busy recently (with life but also Red Sox in playoffs lol) but still followed the Celtics games along the way. I know it's been a shaky start but we still have managed to start 5-2 and a win tonight would really send a statement around the league. LETS GO C's!!

Kenny Smith is wrong. Kyrie won't have balls in his hands most of the time. They will feed the hot hand and there will be different players who will score most of the points in any given game.

I think the best thing Bucks did last off season was add Budenholzer. He's a really good coach imo and his teams have traditionally given the Cs major fits. I don't expect that to change, especially now that he is coaching one of the best players in the NBA.

still dont know how Greek Freak drop to 15th pick

And that was in a supposedly weak draft.  Any team could easily have moved up to get him.

I really hope trying to emulate Kobe isn't the reason. The mid-range is pretty, but it should be used sparingly, not as the go-to. I'd prefer his shot selection to be like prime Ray Allen's

58% of our shots are 3 pointers.  We're shooting 35% overall from the field and only have 34 points with 6 mins left in the half.

I miss the older style of basketball.  Not a huge fan of the 3 era.

With Terry as the PG and no Horford or Smart, it turns to one on one ball. That was tough to watch.

Nice to see Semi hitting.

Did I just hear Marv Albert give a completely wrong stat about Aron Baynes 3 point shooting?

I'd be more surprised if you heard Marc say something coherent
It's just unbearable

EDIT: I think he was giving his 3 point shooting from last season but screwed it up. Or I heard it wrong.

Is Marv Albert commentating somewhere? I’m listening to Mike and Tommy and Danny

What has gotten into Morris so far this year?  He's been a monster for us.

Contract year and he's in better shape than last year.

It helps that he didn't spend the preseason sitting in a courtroom for assault.

If the Celtics can figure things out and become more consistent, they are very dangerous and could still be the favorites in the East (even over Toronto).

But for now it will take some time understandably.

- We're not taking good shot attempts, look at that shot by Jayson, that's a tough shot" when Tatum missed a falling fadeaway after getting stuck in the key

- "I'd like to see Gordon initiate the play more often, he's a really good decisionmaker". 1 min later Hayward initiated the play twice, with Semi 3 and Morris 3

- "They need to drive the lane more and kick it out rather than settling for tough 3s" - when the Celtics were spraying it around from the 3pt line

Milwaukee took control of that game in the 2nd and Cs were playing at their pace. Awful defensive quarter and Cs are fortunate they are shooting like 45% on their almost 30 shot attempts from 3. They really need to start attacking the paint.

The cool thing about that is that most of us at home are probably thinking the same thing. Shot selection hasn’t been great, Hayward’s been playing great, and they gotta hit the paint more before settling for the long ball.

Dang. We could be in the coaching staff!!! Danny Ainge has gotta lotta resources here in CStrong

Tale of the tape...first half

Bux 47.9%
Celtics 42.6%

However the threes hold the keys

Celtics 12/28
Bux 3/14

Tatum is scoreless...the 2nd half awaits him.

Benches
Bux 46 minutes > 21 points
Celtics 46 minutes > 13 points

Horford, Hayward and Kyrie so far a combined 34 points. That's what you like to see!

Is this the first game where they've all looked good?

All 3, I'd say so. There's been a few games where 2 of the 3 looked good but not all 3.

He does. No matter what team or where.

Yeah, I'd agree with this. When Tatum comes back around and these 3 are firing we're super hard to stop. And Briwn isn't even playing!

Danny Ainge’s observations in this game are very astute and he’s not afraid to be critical of them when they play bad

What's he saying?

Some of his comments in the last 5 min:

- "They made that look way too easy, they overreacted and need to do a better job of closing off those lanes" when DiVincenzo cut to the hoop

Our defense has been a sieve since the end of the 1st..........and it looks like lack of effort and committment on that end to me - defenders not digging in and contesting dribble drives to the basket, very slow help and then not being strong on the boards.

Defense wins Titles !!

9 three point attempts midway through the third quarter for your center is kind of crazy. And I'm totally in on the analytics revolution but it's crazy.

THIS OFFENSE IS SO EFFING DYNAMIC AND AMAZING!

This is probably the most athletic Celtics squad ever.

once the threes dry up can we play smart ball and go to rim? we have proven in the oast we can and we caNNOT.  no stupid ball. play smart.

once we get theis back and the bench can keep applying pressure when starters are out teams will fold.

Is it crazy to think that the Bucks are more of a "rival" for us moving forward than the Sixers? I like the Bucks overall fit and playing style much better than the Sixers, who still have so many question marks.

I think the team would consider them more of a rival, but the media will keep beating the "Boston v. Philly" drum no matter how one sided it is

Giannis/Middleton is better at basketball right now than Embiid/Simmons, I'd say.

Giannis is the best player on either team.

Agreed. And Middleton might be the worst player of the 4 but he's the best complimentary player.

Marcus Smart shooting 17 % from three this year.

Can it get any worse?
yes: https://youtu.be/yyCTd62xmzE

The sad part is Marcus is worse, his shot just looks better form wise, but man they both are horrific. I laugh the moment when Markell shoots his shot, with Marcus I laugh after he misses it.

Baynes does not need to get 3 happy - in addition to the fact that he is shaky from there, it takes him away from offensive rebounding.

But look at what happened. Baynes pump faked and took a dribble and got Giannis on a blocking foul.

Now, I'm not saying I want Baynes to start driving from the 3-point arc but he's becoming a threat that other teams have to worry about. If he can bang on defense and draw opposing bigs away from the rim, that's great.

I mean, it would be great if the Celtics ever took shots at the rim.

If Boston continues to contain Milwaukee at this rate this Celtics defense could hold a team scoring 120 points per game to around 100.

Defense wins championships.

Oh, and hitting a lot of threes does too.

Live by the 3, die by the 3 I guess

Just zero reason for this team to live by that motto. They are truly frustrating.

i stand by my statements

will we adjust and play smart or stay stupid with something that does not work?

let us see!
You just need the right people shooting the 3

My goodness this shooting is insane. Most of these are good looks, too, but mannnn I'm still really uncomfortable with them getting so comfortable jacking up so many threes, regardless how many go in.

But, then again, most of these are coming off of inside-out kick-outs. So we're getting to the rim, and we're just finding better shots on the perimeter after the defense collapses. It's hard to criticize that. It's not like we're simply passing around the perimeter and never getting the ball into the paint.

The good thing is Kyrie, Hayward, Tatum and Horford are all efficient 3 pt shooters and most of the shots they take are good shots.

Always stunned when Middleton misses a shot because I am still traumatized from his shooting clinic in the first round last year

I'm still convinced that he shoots worse while uncovered

He certainly can't shoot any better (can he?)
I mean, he shot like 70% from the field for 7 games. Dude gave me nightmares that series

Cs got a ways to go before they live up to the hype.
It's still been a good performance against the only remaining undefeated team in the league

They've gotta learn how to step on opponents' necks, how to finish off games without blowing it (or almost blowing it).

If we get the two Morris brothers together, that may happen literally.

NICE!

This is awful basketball by the Celtics win or lose can they do anything accept shoot a 3 or an off balanced  junper? Can they execute anything on offense besides shooting 3’s? I understand it’s a different game now and everyone shoots 3’s but my god 54 attempts??? They had Milwaukee down by 15 and continued to jack up 3’s while Milwaukee starting driving the paint. Just so boring to watch the Celtics jack up 3’ every possession create some [dang] offense.

well we escaped at the end there.  Bucks play us tough.  We did well to get that big lead and then just seemed to let up off the gas in the 4th.  Awesome shooting.  Move on to the next one.  Semi played well, but hopefully Jaylen will be back for the next one.

We can all complain all we want to about this 4th quarter, and there is a ton to complain about between the refs and our play, but we are still going to beat the only undefeated team in the league, a team beating their foes by an average of almost 15 points a game and did so without one of our best players and maybe our best defender.

well we were gloing inside just kicking out

now if those wide open looks had not fallen we would have to crash 5 guys to the rim which is what we shoulda done in game 7 last year with cavs instead we kept jacking them up

Horford actually allowed Middleton to come around and get position on the baseline on that missed free throw - if the ball bounced the other way, we are tied. Baynes is the one that got us that rebound - he took his guy completely out and allowed Horford to grab the board.

A lot of our threes weren’t bad shots. The Bucks were practically giving us free shots. Just gotta knock them down. Would’ve loved to see us hit one more to tie the record. Kyrie and Hayward both had open looks down the stretch. As did Horford I think?

Giannis gets a lot of calls though huh?

No they went up 3-2 by slowing the game down and playing tough hard defense. Then they started chucking 3's again and it cost them. You don't beat GS by trying to outscore them. I just don't like the offense and honestly never have under CBS. Everyone is allowed to take bad shots without consequence.

True, but it’s also our eighth game when we’re reintegrating/integrating into our offense our two best players. We’ll certainly be a higher volume three point shooting team, but as better chemistry develops I think you’ll see more stuff at the basket.

Also, while clearly a lot of threes, the vast majority of the threes tonight were actually good, open shots coming off of inside-out playmaking. That’s different than continuously chucking threes while never getting into the paint.

Exactly - TP for the truth. Everybody gets caught up in a hot shooting night, but when those 3's cool off, we gotta score in the lane and rely on our defense.

If they hadn't been wide open and if we weren't winning this argument might hold. Our offence is designed to shoot threes

Which is why I'm starting to back up on my beating GS thinking.
Why? Houston was a healthy Chris Paul away from beating GSW, and that's how they play offensively too.

We're a much better defence than them too

It's not, actually. Shooting a lot of free throws is a key part of their offense (25 per game, 3rd in the league last year). We shot 13 FTs tonight. It really was just us jacking up the first open 3 we got.

Oh yeah, our offence is more 3 or mid-range rather than the key or three that D'Antoni loves. But the heavy reliance on deep shooting is the similarity.

We also don't have a Harden to just get free throws whenever he moves

Other than Morris , not great performance from our BWA.

Brad needs to sit Rozier down about his apparently selfish, contract-chasing play so far.

24 3s, only won by 4. Not a good statistic. I understand 3s are the chic thing right now but there needs to be a healthy balance. Cs barely get to the FT line. They need to be more aggressive attacking the paint.
One is not related to the other. The defense gave up 113 points.

Houston chucked themselves out of the series. The C's can easily do the same.
And they wouldn't have been able to win 3 games without their shooting. This argument can go in circles forever.

I'm not saying I like all the threes, but it's clearly our modus operandi

No they went up 3-2 by slowing the game down and playing tough hard defense. Then they started chucking 3's again and it cost them. You don't beat GS by trying to outscore them. I just don't like the offense and honestly never have under CBS. Everyone is allowed to take bad shots without consequence.

Yes, Yes and Yes. We are not Golden State - we have good inside scorers and are much better when we drive it or feed the post some. Plus, jacking all these 3's has hurt our offensive rebounding, which was greatly improved last year. Now Stevens has allowed Baynes to think he is a wing. Stevens has to be a tougher coach with his players - and don't tell me we don't know what is said in meetings or practice. It's obvious by shot selection that he is not correcting this problem. A record shooting night will only make things worse in the long run. Just look what happened late - we couldn't score down the stretch and almost blew an important game.

Happy to get the win. D was great in the 1st quarter and then totally fell apart, but at least they put on quite the display from downtown. It would also be nice if we could play a little better down the stretch.

Anyway, nice job guys on bringing down the last undefeated team in the league!

And like, 50 points in the paint or so

1. You are going to play really good offensive teams which will be very hard to defend. Cs came in ranked with the best defense in the league. Sometimes the other team will be able to hit shots too. Bucks were able to come back from double digit points b/c the Cs decided to shoot themselves into a rut multiple times tonight. They built double digit leads like 3 times and kept settling for 3s instead of forcing the Bucks hand. Bucks started the 4th on a 12-0 run, 7 of those pts FTs while they Cs jacked up 3ptrs on like 4 straight possessions. Things can go really well when they go in but they don't go in at a high rate often for an entire game.

2. Points in the paint always gonna be a problem when playing Giannis. Also, I think the Cs gameplan of pushing them off the 3 pt line played a role in that too. Likewise, Budenholzer's defense with dropping the centers opened the 3 pt barrage by the Cs.

Agree. Kyrie was doing a good job of it, but man, Rozier seems to only shoot when he gets inside the arc

Happy we escaped with the win but to rely on setting a franchise-record 24 treys means we still haven’t hit our stride. Defense was sloppy at times, offense was equally as inconsistent.

Some guys stepped up, some were meh. We didn’t play a great game from start to finish (strong 1st and 3rd, poor 2nd and 4th), but I felt like we were giving this one away. Luckily we scraped it out.

Crazy the narrative by everyone is that we are off to a slow start when we are 6-2. We still haven’t started firing on all cylinders yet but on a 61+ win pace. Let the rest of the league be warned; you haven’t seen the Celtics.

They had their first two losses this year and have won four straight so far. Lets keep balling and winning!!!

Exactly - TP for the truth. Everybody gets caught up in a hot shooting night, but when those 3's cool off, we gotta score in the lane and rely on our defense.

so turn away the open threes and force it inside against a packed defense? Okay genius.

I still think the Bucks are the third best team in the east.    After us and Toronto, Philly is on the outside looking in.

The Bucks are a dangerous team. If they are hitting outside shots they are tough. Greek Freak gets every call and you can't play defense on him because if you look at him it's a foul. I agree that the top 3 in the East are BOS, TOR & MILW. It's too early to say if BOS or TOR will be the team to beat in the East but if we are healthy I think we are deeper.

I'm with you Rockin.  The Bucks defense was defending the paint at the expense of WIDE open threes.  Marcus Morris basically called them warm up shots.  The reality is that Giannis, Middleton, Snell, Henson, Illyasova, and Lopez have the collective size, length, and athleticism to give the Celtics major issues with help defense.  The flip side is that their approach will get them destroyed from the three point line against elite shooting teams.

This doesn't mean that I wouldn't prefer a bit more balance.  There are ways to get high percentage shots within 10 feet regardless of of whether or not the Bucks are packing the paint.  A 100% healthy Hayward will go a long way towards helping the offense in this type of match up.

On a different note, I wouldn't be against Semi starting against Milwaukee even with a healthy roster.  He is truly the only wing with the combination of strength and lateral quickness to make Giannis work for every bucket.  Horford can handle Giannis in the closing minutes but I think it's too demanding for him to defend the freak for 25+ minutes per night.

All those complaining realize we just beat an undefeated team right?

Also, bucks were purposely packing the paint. Brad Steven's said as much in the halftime interview. If you are getting wide open 3s you have to take them.

Good thing is, Kyrie looks back and Hayward looks better every game. Last night he looked like allstar hayward.

Once we have our chemistry down and both those guys are 100% watch out

They had numerous opportunities to take better high % shots and settled for 3's instead. If all it takes is packing the paint to force Boston into shooting a crazy number of 3's, then the Bucks just found the blueprint on how best to play against this team.

I don't get to see every game because I'm not on the Boston market, but over the last few years most games I've seen have been nothing but street ball and 3 pt competitions. I realize the league is changing (for the worse imo), but Brad has to start keeping these guys in check when they start chucking 3 after 3. You saw what happened last night when those shots stopped falling, a blowout turned into a nail-biter.

43% from 3 is pretty good. Could have hit a couple more to be honest. Lucky we have some very high 3% shooting guys (maybe, combined, better than GSW). Certainly our defense is better than theirs, not today though...

I think it's a little bit of a stretch to say better than GSW. I certainly think we are deeper but it would be hard to match the 3 pt efficiency of Curry, Klay & Durant.
