The field has been set.
Some favorable groups, some really tough. Who's your early favorite? Who do you think got screwed in their draws.
Only a few more months away.

Can't wait to see the U.S play!
Anyways, Group F looks like it will be real fun, but honestly ALL the groups look interesting. Nice to see a variety of teams this time around and unexpected ones who could make a name for themselves here (ex. Tunisia, Senegal, Iceland, Costa Rica, Panama, etc.)
Still a shame the U.S couldn't make it and lost to Trinidad in a must win game... ??? (No disrespect to Panama and Costa Rica, who both deserved spots)
-
Group D to me is the most fascinating.
Argentina will still have the best player (arguably) in the world, but has struggled to qualify. That midfield is still a big question mark.
And then you got Iceland, who was a massive surprise in the Euros. Can they replicate it?
Nigeria is one of the top, if not the best team in Africa (let's go Alex Iwobi!). They will be a tough out.
And then Croatia is full of star power, especially on that midfield with Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic, Ivan Perisic and Marcelo Brozovic (although they have Dejan Lovern on defence, that already makes it's very suspicious).
It will be interesting, this group. I don't think there's a clear favorite here, and every nation in this Group could win it.
Group F seems to be a tough group as well. I think we can expect Germany to be Germany, but the battle for the second placer spot could be really tough.
France has an easy group. Way too easy.
-
No real group of death. Some good groups (F, D, E) but no group with more than 2 teams with major potential to go far.
-
Early picks for the group stages
A: Uruguay & Egypt
B: Spain & Portugal
C: France & Denmark
D: Iceland, Croatia
E: Brazil, Serbia
F: Germany, Mexico
G: Belgium, England
H: Colombia, Japan

Early favourites to win the World Cup are:
Not convinced by
(1) Germany = star studded side with lots of depth but lack some balance within team. Klose, Lahm and Schweinsteiger were big losses for them. I think they are still figuring out Werner and some of their other young attackers. Muller isn't as comfortable without Lahm. Not sure they know who their best 3 are in the 4-2-3-1. Which give the side the best balance.
(2) Belgium = Roberto Martinez and his tactics. Not convinced by them. Loads of star power again but I do not like that 3-4-2-1 formation. I do not think it suits Belgium. I'd like to see with the full backs instead of those wing backs / defensive wingers. Martinez not defensive minded enough to grind out results which they could do in that formation.
(3) England = Southgate is an idiot. He does not know how to build an attacking side. He will not make the most of the talent they do have so I do not expect England to be a surprise side at the tournament.
(4) Argentina = I caught some of the games they have played since Sampaoli joined and they look a mess. Not convinced they have enough time to figure things out. I like the look of that Lo Celso guy. He looks part of the solution moving forward in that midfield.
--------------------------
So that leaves Brazil, Spain and France as my favourites.
(1) Brazil = have looked awesome with Gabriel Jesus up front. Much more teeth to that attack now. The manager Tite has done a great job building that defense and midfield. I do not think they will concede many goals. And they have serious weapons going forward.
(2) Spain = awesome team. Loads of talent in midfield. Quality defenders. Morata is establishing himself as a legit top striker and he suits their style of play unlike Diego Costa. Best keeper in the world in De Gea. Spain are legit.
(3) France = most talented team in the world. Incredible array of defensive talent, midfield talent, wide players and forwards. They can play any style and win at a high level. Only problem is does Deschamps know his best team? Will he pick the best players? Who will he pick?

Argentina, Nigeria and Croatia is fascinating. England should qualify for the knock-out stages, but finishing ahead of Belgium seems unlikely. Very happy with the group Japan is in, as they have a real shot at advancing. Still so annoyed that the Dutch didn't make it. Still amazed that Italy and Chile are not present, either.
Russia got a good group, also, so no excuse for not qualifying for the Round of 16 before home crowds.

No USA, no Italy...no interest.
It ain't a real World Cup without the Azzuri.

I guess you're a partisan, not a fan of the beautiful game?

It ain't a real World Cup without the Azzuri.
You have to blame it on them. USA needed to beat the bottom team of their federation to advance, they can't do it.
Italy had to beat Sweden, and they were heavy favorites to do so, but they failed.
They didn't deserve to get in if they can't beat those teams.

Sorry ... posted in wrong thread. I was looking for the EPL thread.

Who's watching?
It seems like Saudi Arabia is just there for Group A to get some points on. It might not get exciting until tomorrow's game. Two defender missing tackles for a goal. Not good enough, especially when your next games is vs Luis Suarez and Mohamed Salah.
But hey, here we are!
-
Russia is easily ahead .... S.Arabia is very weak team
-
I didn't watch today's game. I figured neither of today's teams were worth watching.
Looking forward to tomorrow though. This should be a very good tournament.
I am shocked Spain fired their manager. What a train wreck right before the games kick off. I thought Spain were one of the favourites for the World Cup. They looked great in qualifiers and in friendlies. Lopetegui did great things with that team. Really added to it. He is a loss for Spain. On the bright side, at least Spain are an experienced group of players who can manage themselves a fair bit. So hopefully that will allow them to still put a strong showing on.
-
Does a team other than Brazil, Germany, and Spain have a good chance at winning the whole thing?
-
Heard a joke today that was hilarious. Basically he said he had no interest in watching a world cup in Russia because he couldn't see how Russia would lose a world cup in Russia. Thought that was absolutely hilarious and sad all at the same time.
Still can't believe Spain fired its coach yesterday. Just some crazy stuff.
-

France and Belgium
On paper both have amazing roster

France and Belgium has the talent to make a push. Colombia could be sneaky good.

Portugal vs. Spain tomorrow should be a great one! Same with Germany vs. Mexico Sunday afternoon! 8)
Have to admit, this World Cup does have a lot of intriguing games in the group stage. Nice to see ;D

IMHO it should have more....
I am not sure about Spain vs Portugal.. It could be a great game ut easily it old be the most boring game of the year. Santos is the most defensive minded coach I know.. He is a master at destroying a game and killing the pace. Spain on the other hand is a question mark... First game with new coach possibly still In shock nobody knows how they ll react. I can see both team settling with a draw

Oh crap. The German team doesn't have any players with the last name of Zimmermann, does it? ;) ;D

Dang that Egypt - Uruguay game was fantastic today!
Sad that Mo Salah was unable to play in the game though... :(

I don't get it. How is that hilarious and how could one not see Russia not winning the world cup this year? Does this have anything to do with the election scandal? They're far from favorites to win it though I'll be rooting for them but I've always liked Brazil. Bad a$$ team. I'm Russian by the way so don't intentionally say anything offensive. Thank you for your consideration.
-
The image of 71yo Tabares suffering of Guillain-Barre syndrome celebrating the goal will be one of the biggest moments of the tournament.....

I think he was just saying the joke, in his mind, was that Russia was corrupt. I don't really follow this stuff. Does Russia have a chance of winning?

Not at all lol
But they got a good shot of advancing from the group stage into the knockout stage though.
-
Going full Britbong as an HKer. GO ENGLAND!
-
So, will it be a sound decision to put $20 on Portugal today?
I kind of want to. . .
-
The draw is my pick but Portugal winning is not out of the question. It is a strange game
-
CRISTIANO PENALDO!
Great move to draw the penalty too.
-
Spain are dead. No energy. No urgency. Going through the motions.
Moving the ball so slowly.
-
What a goal! Great game so far
-
That is more like it. Great play by Iniesta. Get that attack going.
Oh man, what an individual goal by Diego Costa. Great finish. Great pass by Busquets.
-
What an absolute monster Diego Costa is. Jesus! What a goal!
-
Omg... Degea what the f%'=+.?
-
WOW! Ronaldo again. Or maybe David De Gea blowing the save?
-
What the heck happened De Gea? Terrible mistake.
-
My God. This game has turned into a classic.
-
Nachooooooooooooooo
Spain is the better side and deserves it... Portugal is the usual santos' team....boring
-
Christiano hat trick..... Wow
-
[dang] Ronaldo...speechless
-
He scored in 4th world Cup and 8th major tournament...
and the oldest player to score a hattrick in world cup . 51st personal hattrick and 51st in the world cups.
He is an egomaniac but he is a machine
-
Your move, Lionel Messi.
So, how much of Ronaldo's monster game today was David De Gea being surprisingly sub par?
-
Would've been awesome to get a draw against France :( Still a 2-1 loss is better than most would have predicted, wasn't a bad performance at all.
-
Australia is not good enough to win games but they is a very hard working team with good tactics and never gets embarrassed. That is not easy thing to do.
Iceland just missed an unbelievable chance ....
-
Good luck to all the teams everyone cheers for!
Festival has started.
Interesting note:
Before the Croatia vs Nigeria match, Croatian manger announced our NTs most offensive lineup ever.
4 strikers with Modrić and Rakitić controling the middle behind them. Match starts in 4 and a half hours. We need this win badly as Argentina is in our 2nd leg, and it's a hard position if we have to pull ourselves out vs them.
-
Higuain gets in on the 83rd min.... Playing against such a tight defence Argentina had two midgets in the penalty area... Oh and icardi is at his home.....
-
What a performance by Iceland. The slipper still fits, apparently.
-
Can I just say, Chicharito, what the heck are you doing???
-
Mexico struck first. What a touch by Chucky Lozano there, coming from a brilliant counter attack.
Germany is reeling a bit here.
-
Lozano!! Go Mexico!
-
Lozano!! Go Mexico!
How about that touch, eh, Who? The pull back, and to beat Neuer on his near post.
-
Germany have looked really quite poor.
Still clueless as to why Sane was left out of the squad. I can't think of any reason as to why Draxler would start ahead of him, let alone for Sane to be left out of the squad
-

Agree. Sane would have provided much needed pace on that wing for Germany. It is quite baffling.
-
Group F really is a fantastic group. Germany, Sweden, Mexico and South Korea. Wow!
Probably two spots between GER, SWE & MEX, but South Korea are no scrubs either.
-
Good news for Mexico is they played great in the first half and have a lead.
Bad news for Mexico is Germany did not seem engaged and probably could kick it up 3 notches. Also not sure if Mexico can continue to play at that level for another 45 minutes.
-
Tactically Germany is a mess..... Kimmich plays as a winger and khedira is all over the place leaving the right side wide open. They are lucky Mexico scored just once....
Why draxler starts and Sane is on vacations is beyond me!
-

I say they should keep going, though. They are not going to win a possession battle vs Germany. Too organized in the back. If they can, they should try and keep beating them on the counter.
But yes, now they have Germany's attention. I expect a full front assault from this half.

I would've even preferred to see Reus out wide over Draxler

You're getting it. Reus is coming in. But for Khedira.

Germany should throw some high crosses into the box.
Trying to be too clever with little passes on edge of the box while Mexico are flooding that area with their own players. Germany are much bigger more physical team. Put the ball in the air and try to create that way.
-
Ohh, Lozano is coming off. That is a big loss for Mexico. That guy is terrifying in counter attacks.
That will free Germany up to push even more players forward.
-

Can't be that much harder at this point since Mexico basically conceded 3/4 of the field since halftime.
-
Nice to see Rafa Marquez get in. Surely this is his final Cup.
-
I hate seeing Guardado go off too. Not liking Mexico's subs.
Guardado is too good. Too important. He needs to be on the pitch in this situation.

They are locking up shop, it seems, with their subs. They would probably just sit on that 1-0 lead and defend.
-
Why is Ozil still in the game? Been a massive zero today.
-
Why is Ozil still in the game? Been a massive zero today.
He has been bad. But he's probably the only player they have right there that could create chances, that's probably why.
-
My goodness. Layun cannot shoot at all.
-
My god, that was close! What a sequence there.
-
Big win for Mexico
-
This has got to be the biggest upset so far.
Mexico went full on attacking and it paid off. Germany can't seem to get quality chances. What a win by Mexico here.
-
Mexico are my favourite team so far. They played some pretty football in the first half. A bit disappointed by how much defended deep and how early they changed into those defensive tactics but they do play some really nice stuff when they are passing the ball and looking to attack.
Herrera was fantastic in midfield.

Do you think this counter attacking style they played today will be sustainable moving forward?

I think any team with Lozano in it can kill it in the counter attack. That guy is lethal in open space.
I love the spacing of the Mexico team. Their movement is beautiful. They way they get open and create passing angles for whoever is on the ball ... and they are always looking to get forward. They build from the back superbly with their keeper. Fantastic stuff.
Edit: I don't think Mexico is that counter-attack based. They are a possession based team. They were just playing another possession in Germany and Germany were better at maintaining possession so Mexico ended up in more of a counter attack situation. And with Lonzano and others, they have the players to exploit those situations.
-
Terrible game by Germany, but not completely unexpected.
Defensive movement in midfield was terrible, no cohesion or urgency on offense, mentality lukewarm. Comme ci, comme ca.
Seems like there's a rift in the team, too. Several players have come out in the last few weeks criticizing the attitude of their teammates on and off the pitch. Apparently, some of the younger players think very highly of themselves.
If they play like that against Sweden or South Korea, they might not even make it out of the group stage.
-
Yes, Germany looked sluggish, but overall I thought that was a fantastic battle all-around. Lots of sets, chances, counter-attacks, great defense (especially from Mexico late), etc.
Mexico came out on top and honestly I'm happy for them. Also they are the first CONCACAF team to beat Germany in the World Cup. ;D
Now I'm curious to see how Brazil does in their first game today. They aren't considered favorites but could still make a deep run this year. But it's also possible they look sluggish today too.
-
I really want Germany to make it all the way, but they couldn't even beat Mexico :(
-
My God, have mercy on us Phillipe Coutinho...
-
WOW, WHAT A GOAL! :o
-
I really want Germany to make it all the way, but they couldn't even beat Mexico :(
Is that what you saw? Germany was clearly the better team. The celebrations at the end of the game shows that even Mexico knows they got away with one.

Germany looked better at times, but to be honest they looked quite sluggish most of the game. Give Mexico credit, they played a helluva game all-around, and Mexico is actually a really good team (not some "scrub" team in the field).

True, but don't bring down confetti because you won an opening round game. Germany played like it was a league game while Mexico played like it was a championship game. Looked to me like Germany was conserving energy for later rounds which is smart strategy for a month long competition if you are expecting to be there at the end. It sucks that they lost, but they had the overall better strategy.
Mexico has scoreboard but Germany just did not look like they were too worried about this game - the game itself and the result.

Okay, but you have to realize Group F has Germany, Sweden, Mexico and South Korea. South Korea may end up last in the group but they are no pushovers either. For Mexico to get this win was huge because honestly a lot of people think Germany and Sweden advances from the group. And also, it's a little absurd to say it was a "league game" for Germany, because if Germany draws or even loses the next game against Sweden, they very likely could get knocked out in the group stages alone.
Even Iceland celebrated a draw against Argentina yesterday. It happens, and also this is actually a historic moment for both Mexico and CONCACAF as this is the first time a CONCACAF team (and Mexico) have beaten Germany in a World Cup game.
-
I don't know we we are sugarcoating this... Germany for 70+ mind failed to create a decent chance. They just had the ball.. That doesn't make them the better side.
Hummels threw Löw under the bus saying I was alone with boateng in the back I don't understand why we played like this
It is a three game league. If you don't take every game seriously you are stupid. Italy won the 2006wc failed in the group stage 2010wc,Spain won in 2010 failed in the group stage 2014
-
Great corner kick, great header, great goal by the Swiss 8)

No doubt you take each game seriously, but that was not a must win for Germany. I still dont like the way they were stifled so you must give credit to Mexico. Germany did most of their penetration from the wings, not sure that I agree with that approach. Stop wasting possessions on the wings the goal is in the middle. Work the ball in the middle and get in the box where the defender is more careful not to foul. Germany will play better.

Now Brazil has dropped points.
The favorites has not looked like the favorites at all. What a very interesting start this has been.

And yet we all know who the likely players will be at the final stages of the competition.
-
Not convinced by Werner as a sole striker. I think he needs a partner up front in order to get the best out of him. Someone Werner can combine off of and link with. I'd like to see Germany either switch formation (presumably with Muller alongside him) or drop Werner from the starting 11.
Never been much of a fan of Mario Gomez. A good goal-scorer but doesn't add much in other areas. I am disappointed they didn't bring Sandro Wagner. Not a great player by any means but he works well as a focal point up front and allows others to play off of him. I thought Wagner should have been their starting #9 for the tournament.
Without Wagner and since I am not convinced by Gomez or Werner, I wonder if Germany would not be better off playing one of their attacking midfielders up front ala Spain a few years ago. Maybe Draxler up front with Reus on the left wing. Or vice versa. Or Brandt. Someone with more skill and range on the ball than Werner / Gomez. Someone who can take up different positions (deeper positions) and be tough to defend with Muller making his runs in off the right as defense gets pulled out of position.
-

Argentina, Brazil, and Germany all either have losses or ties. What a World Cup it has been!

I still think they all advance, but it's insane to think that Germany especially *could* be a team that's knocked out in the group stages. I mean, a draw or even a loss to Sweden in the next game (Saturday) could make that a legit possibility.
But still predict Germany advances and Argentina + Brazil as well.
That said, this is a very interesting WC because honestly there doesn't seem to be clear "favorites" in the field. Even the few regarded as favorites looked real sluggish in the first game. Though we have yet to see Belgium play yet, but they should get a comfortable win over Panama tomorrow (or not... we'll see).
-
looks like Kalinic is packing his bags ..... He refused to be subbed in and the coach is thinking about sending him back home.
-
Useless info but impressive at the same time
99.6 of Icelands population watched the game against argentina....
Speaking about argentina ....... Sampaoli went to a practice which was posponed! Is this a serious team ????
-
England need to bring Loftus Cheek on. I do not like Alli & Lingard as a midfield pairing. Lingard more of a wide attacker [an attacker more than an organizer of play] and Alli more a guy who runs into the box [also more of an attacker more than an organizer of play]. Neither are creative passers. England lacking that creativity in the middle of the park. Loftus-Cheek is the best man to provide that in the squad. He needs to be on the pitch.
I'd take off Trippier to bring Loftus-Cheek on. Move Sterling out wide and Alli up front.
-
I like seeing Rashford up front alongside Kane. Good stuff.
-
It doesn't matter who plays and who doesn't..... England will always be England... Unfortunately....
-
Out of all the guys Tunisia chose to not mark, they chose Harry Kane...
The deserved to lose.

Conversation in my house yesterday:
Family Member: "Did you just spend six hours watching soccer?"
Me: "Yup. It's Father's Day and all I want to do is watch soccer."
Family Member: "I didn't even know you liked soccer."
Me: "I don't."
Family Member: "Then why did you spend six hours watching soccer?"
Me: "Because it's the World Cup."
Family Member: "But that's soccer!"
Me: Mumbling and shaking my head, "You just don't understand..."

Yeah, this World Cup is definitely interesting, in that there doesn't seem to be clear-cut favorites in the field. Even some of the teams that were favorites coming in (Belgium, France, Germany, Argentina, etc.) looked sluggish. Maybe that's just some nerves since it's still early in the tournament, but still interesting.
I know Belgium won 3-0 today but they definitely looked shaky at times before they ultimately wore out Panama and scored 3 second half goals.
Still got two games left tomorrow before the 1st set of group stage games are complete, but I think the Iceland-Argentina result AND Mexico-Germany results are the most surprising so far. Brazil drawing with Switzerland was also surprising I guess.

Brazil can blame the ref for the result(although i don't remmeber them complaining four years ago when they got plenty of help). I don't see them as a clear favourite as many do but they played pretty good and created chances to win the game.
The only big names who were a total disappointment where Germany and Argentina. I think Germany will play better. Kimmich should play next to Kroos , a real right defender and Reus instead of Ozil or Draxler to create some width. Saturday's game will be huge
I don't know what Argentina can do. They are a mess waiting for Messi to do something magic. Mascherano as a DM is a joke. Icardi on holidays is a joke. Sampaoli doesn't seem to be in charge there.

Isn't Trippier one of our best CBs? Why him? I'd rather move Lingard to the bench, he's horribly inconsistent.

It was because they needed a goal and were chasing the game. The other players are better attackers than Trippier is.
Trippier is a very good crosser of the ball but he is limited at running defenders, at cutting inside off the flank and at making incisive passes (non-crosses). He is a more one-dimensional attacking threat. The other wide options (Lingard, Sterling) offer much more variety and talent going forward - as you would expect since they are attacking midfielders and forwards whereas Trippier is only a full back.

Ah I see. And yeah Lingard is at least a better attacking option at converting opportunities than someone like Rashford, who imo is one of the most overrated young talents in England. I'm a United fan but I just don't get how people say a 20 year old who isn't technically sound ala Martial, isn't willing to pass because he thinks he's C Ronaldo and fluffs every easy chance he gets to score a goal is an incredible talent. He even tries to shoot corners for god's sake! I just can't wrap my head around how people rave about him, the potential is there but as of right now it's only potential and very little actual substance except for that one great game out of 5 or 6.
-
Russia routed Egypt 3-1.
Wow, Russians off to a hot start in these World Cup. Home-field advantage sure has its benefits! ;D
-
Ronaldo is flat out beasting so far in the WC.
-
I wish he stopped the threatrics .
But he is a beast. 33yo with all than milleage under his feet and still performing like that is unreal. He so far the fastest player in the competition ,almost 34km/h , while in 16/17 the highest he reached was 31km/h.

i d love to see Australia scoring a second.
They deserve to get a win in the tournament

Couple of chances, just didn't quite have the quality. Draw isn't too bad, just need France to win their next 2 and get a win over Peru. Not a great chance of going through but stranger things have happened.
-
Later today watch Messi get Croatized.
Great midfield Vs no midfield.
Or so I keep telling myself.
-
i d love to see Australia scoring a second.

Australia always plays hard. Respect.
-
Argentina is one of the leat likeable teams on the tournament... It s more like Messi and friends than a national team. I really want them to lose but to be honest (sorry Androslav) i don't trust Croatia. This team seems to choke although the talent is of the highest level. Just look at that midfield .... Which team has ever had the playmakers of Real and Barcelona ???

Yeah Argentina with Messi reminds of a Lebron team. Ugly but can rack up wins. They made the finals last time, also like LBJ.
I am not surprised that you are not sold on our team. We haven't been passed the group stage in WC for 20 years. We usually have some star talent and the football NT cult. But we often fail to beat (in our minds) inferior competition and our executives are even more corrupt than the Greek ones.
However I do believe that we will advance further from the group stage this time.
-
I really like Peru. Feed sorry for them. They have played some really good football. They try to get on the ball. They try to attack. They are a very likeable team. They deserve more.
-
I think androslav is already in the post sending a thank you card to caballero

Croatia 3-0 Argentina
Incredible result for Croatia. Terrific performance. They completely shut down Argentina's midfield and stopped them from getting the ball into dangerous areas. Beautiful goal by Modric for the 2nd and nice team goal on the 3rd. Delighted for Croatia.
-
I don't understand why Aguero and Higuain are even in the Argentina team. They never do anything for the National team.
What use is it having great club players when they do not perform for your national team? Germany was right to leave Leroy Sane behind. He hasn't found his place in that team either. Sane will have the opportunity to prove himself after the World Cup but the World Cup isn't time for bedding in players. You bring the guys that perform for you.
-

Our deep pressure paid off :)
We got lucky, but we punished that Caballero mistake with a lovely Rebić volley. 2nd goal was a 24 meter (78 feet) Modrić brilliance. After that Argentina went with basically 5 strikers and 5 defenders and got swallowed in the middle (of it). Last goal was the kind you see in training. 5 meter line, goalkeeper on the ground. Beside that Argentinians played very dirty, unsportsmanlike. It was physical throughout, but they stepped over the line a couple of times.
3:0. Clean sheet aswell.
We got to the last 16 after 20 years! :D

I like them as players, but they have a positional talent imbalance on their roster. Very heavy up field, poor in the middle and then strikers get cutt off easily. Also, their goalkeeper is Chelseas 5th goalkeeper, that is below par and it showed.

I stole this from Twitter.

Sane is not just a young talented player. He had a great season probably a top3 german player. Even if he doesn't fit perfectly you call him. Draxler who barely played is a better option? I doubt it. Worse case scenario he doesn't play. You can take such a risk for one player.
Besides it was obvious against Mexico that Germany needed a winger
-
Cristiano = LeBron; Messi = Curry; Neymar =?

Glad Costa Rica lost. Them and Iceland. They are spoiler. Don't try to play football. Just defend and hope. Boring teams.
Knock 'em out ASAP. World Cup will be better for it.

Those acting acts and flooping near the end were just awfull. Glad brazil punished them.
-
Neymar's acting is equally awful
But Brazil deserved to win the game. It is amazing how many very good chances they wasted.
-
Fantastic goals by Musa for Nigeria. The first one was an incredible first touch on the cross to setup the half volley. Brilliant touch and technique. And the second was pure speed to beat his marker and super composure in the box to round the keeper and create the right angle against the defenders rushing the goal line.
Worth checking out the highlights if you missed the game (as I did).
Especially for the first goal. Pure class.

Couldn't agree more. The first goal was unbelievable.. Every touch was perfect. Goal of the tournament Imo.
BTW if I were Swiss I'd be angry with shaqiri......

This Mexico team is so fun to watch, especially on the counter attack.
-
This Mexico team is so fun to watch, especially on the counter attack.
Mexico IMO is the dark horse of this tournament. We knew they were a great team coming in but they could legitimately make a deep run.
Belgium is looking real good too. They were considered a favorite coming in and have played like it so far. Not like Argentina, Germany, etc.
That said, we'll see how Germany does. Really excited for Germany vs. Sweden next ;D
-
Perhaps Mexico could win it all.
-
Perhaps Mexico could win it all.
because they beat South Korea?
-
Happy with some of the changes Germany made. I like Rudy in midfield. I think he'll help Kroos more with ball distribution from deep. Dropping Ozil for Reus is another strong move. I like Draxler better in the middle than out wide. Now Germany have 3 roving attacking midfielders trying to get into the box to support Werner. Plus Hector is back at left back.
3 positive changes for the team.
-
Perhaps Mexico could win it all.
They are fun to watch but knock out games are a different animal!
Mexico should be happy to reach the quarterfinals.
-
That is a great stat = first 10 minutes of Germany vs Sweden
Germany = 122 pass
Sweden = 6 pass
-
Soccer, golf and nascar are 3 sports i cant watch
-
Oh Toivonen!
What a mistake by Kroos. Two mistakes. First the pass. Unnessecarily fancy. He had a simple pass out wide. Overly complicated in tight area. Not enough room to get the ball through and lost possession. Then he did such a bad job tracking the run of Toivonen. He took the runner at the first and then just let him drift off and open up into space creating room to receive the pass. Kroos out of position. Never got back in the play. Toivonen with a splendid finish over Neuer.
Werner seems intimidated physically by Sweden's bigger defenders whenever he gets the ball in close quarters. Useless against those big defenders when Germany plays a high ball in a cross or a long ball out of defense. Germany should consider changing him.
-
I chucked Germany vs Mexico to the Germans just feeling their way in the first round, but their showing so far today has been disgraceful. I do not see them beating Sweden now. At best they manage a draw. They are just not attacking the goal enough.
Stop the idiotic wing buildup and attack the middle of the field.
-
Germany is reeling again.
Seriously, what is wrong with this squad? Shades of Spain in 2014.
-
If they attack the middle of the field they will win. If they keep running down the wings they will lose.
-
This German squad still has not figured out how to stop the counter.
Toni Kroos is everywhere and nowhere at once. He hasn't had a good World Cup does far.
-
Larsson is a wonderful footballer. Never a top player but he deserved better than spending so many years on those bad Sunderland teams. Such a lovely delivery of the ball. Best set piece guy in the Premier League for several years. Wonderful striker of the ball both in shooting, crossing and passing. Clever footballer.
Doing a wonderful job for Sweden today.
-

Always hated the boxing bout where one boxer chases the other all over the ring while the other boxer just backs off or leans against the ropes. Germany has the disadvantage of being the aggressor with Sweden and Mexico before them just playing a bend do not break defense with the occasional breakaway. What happens if Germany lays back and does not press? Will there be a match will the game be declared a no-contest? I truly dont know how you solve this problem other than abolishing the or modifying the off-side rule to allow more man to man play.
-
Germany have been so unlucky to net only 1 goal. They have so many chances.
Werner has come alive in the 2nd half now that he is no longer asked to lead the line. Muller has been a major threat also. It's almost as if Germany have 3 strikers with the way those two are attacking the box. Both guys drifting out wide and putting in dangerous balls into the box as well.
-
WHAT A GOAL BY TONI KROOS!!!
-
GoOoOoOoOoOoOaAaAaAaAaAaAaAaL Germany!!!
-
WOW WHAT A GOAL AND WHAT A COMEBACK BY GERMANY!!!
EVEN AFTER BOATENG WENT OUT AND THEY ONLY PLAYED WITH 10 MEN!!
:o
-
This is why Soccer is the GREATEST GAME...
-
Kroos WHAT A STRIKE what a goal.
-
That second half was way better. What a hero ball by Kroos.
One good half is not enough, though. They'll have to deliver against S. Korea, now.
Here's hoping they finally found their groove.
-

I don't know his name, but that bearded substitute for SWE really blew it for them late. Dumb foul that close to the goal and GER made them pay.
Refs did screw Sweden in the 1st half BUT Sweden played way too conservative the 2nd half. GER deserved to win honestly with that 2nd half extraordinary fightback
-
Its time to start thinking tie-breakers in this group. What are the tie breakers if Germany Mexico and Sweden end up with 6 points each.
-
Classic Germany... I was sure the will score a second. That's what they do (well that and cars)
The final day can be very exciting ending with 3 teams tied with 6points. Even Mexico isn't safe now

Sweden was conservative all game. All teams that play Germany are conservative even Mexico was conservative.
-
am I the only one that wasnt that concerned with Boateng going out. Germany has made so many miraculous wins down men in the world cup.
-
No... I think everyone deep inside new that Germany will somehow score
IMHO they are now a lock to qualify
-
That Germany win makes it more interesting for Mexico - Sweden now.
The fact that Mexico has been impressive and can still be eliminated makes this so much fun. And Germany can still go out if South Korea gets a result.
This Group is fun.

True but I felt Sweden needed to push it back a little. For the last 20 minutes they literally let GER enter their box frequently. Even Mexico at times did a great job keeping it out and forcing them more to midfield. Their goalie was exceptional but that final goal was insane (hard to stop)

I can't understand how anyone who watched the match yesterday can give South Korea any chance against Germany. The players are not technically sound and have rather low football IQ, which leads to South Korea blowing every single chance they have when they get them, unless it's Ki or Son. I just don't see how can they score to keep level with Germany, who I assume will at least score one or two goals.
-

Germany is already in the next phase. There is absolutely no way they don't get the 3 points against Korea.
England is killing Panama... 5 0 halftime.... Lingaard scored a beauty. I don't know why the panamesians (??)are complaining since the first minute of the game

They're overmatched, getting embarrassed, and in all of my years the South American teams are always the kinds of teams who love to be physical with you but the minute you hit them back or the ref calls them for it, they wilt.
-
Every time I see that World Cup logo I think of ET on LSD.
Just ugly as sin.

Poland just passing it back and forth amongst their defenders. Ball not going forwards.
Boring football.
-
Their midfield is a joke. So far they ve been a surprise in a negative way

South Korea is the dirtiest team

I keep watching James' pass to Quadrado..... Wow..... W O W!

Spain should not have fired their coach.
They look a shadow of the team they were a few months ago.

The Spanish FA sets a condition that the NT coach will work exclusively for the NT.
I think it was an unnecessary distraction they should have avoided but I doubt they'd be much better.
Morocco is one fine team. I enjoyed watching then play.

Is there a particular reason that Nigeria Argentina and Iceland Croatia games are on at the same time tomorrow? Is it because of the obvious implications one game has on the other?
-
That's it!
Imagine the two teams playing earlier and the other pair can see if they need to put the best squad out on the pitch or not.
-
WHOA
Nigeria penalty kick and they score! 1-1.
If results in both games stand for final 35-40 minutes, ARG is knocked out in group stages :o

Honestly, that wasn't a deliberate handball, which is the key there.
-
You have to admit though, a lot of the smaller/weaker teams in this World Cup have actually done really well and defied expectations. Even the ones that were eliminated without a win have actually put up some good fights and didn't just fold.
I feel bad for Nigeria. They played a helluva game and almost pulled off the draw, but ARG just found a way to break through late (that's just what good, experienced teams do). But Nigeria should hold their heads high after this game, and from this WC overall.
That said, this Argentina team DOES NOT scare anyone to be honest. I think France beats them.
So as of now at least, Round of 16 games are:
Portugal vs. Uruguay
Russia vs. Spain
Argentina vs. France
Croatia vs. Denmark
A lot of intriguing games to be honest ;D
Also, did anyone realize that, if Brazil finish say, first in their group and Germany finished 2nd, then we could see a Brazil vs. Germany matchup EARLY in the tournament (Round of 16) :o 8)
-

He first headed the ball and then hit on his hand. It wasn't a penalty... To be honest neither was the one awarded. This happens in every corner kick.

It is easier for them to be prepared for the group stage. Top teams have more tired players and they aim to go further so their training and conditioning is planned accordingly. Moreover top teams have to face tight defenses which is never easy
@Who
i somewhat agree .Argentina was bad. But that game for Nigeria was a final and against a bad team they didn't do anything! When it mattered they choked. They had only one decent chance. they blew their chance and i can't feel bad about them.

Yeah, I thought it wasn't a handball too.
I'm just looking at it in hindsight, if that was given, my God. Solid win for Argentina. Probably didn't deserve to win, but hey, they got thru.
Now it's time for them to reap their reward, a date with France ;D.
-
Wow, SK gets that goal back on VAR..
Good call too, he was onsides from what I saw.

Anf even if he was, the ball came off a German player, it would have counted.
Man, Mexico owes South Kore a big one.

Accidental double post.

Germany out in the groups, I did not expect that.
Glad Mexico didn't get knocked out with two wins. Always crushing when that happens to a team.
-
Thank God this is finally over. Totally deserved. Fifty minutes of good football over three games just isn't enough.
First order of business: thank Löw for his years of service and find a new national team coach. Fourteen years is enough. I can't watch this crap anymore without getting aggravated.
The offense was in shambles. Sloppy passes into empty space, slow and plodding movement, lots of technical mistakes in the 1-on-1s. Seriously, there were a good 20 minutes in the second half without a single good pass in the final third. Not that the defense was any better, which allowed one stupid counter after another.
Again, none of this was completely unexpected. They had a string of at least ten bad games in the build-up to the WC. The team assured us they'd be ready when it matters, and although the concerns were reasonable, we gave them the benefit of the doubt due to their past success.
That's the one good thing that can come out of all this: that they can't hide behind their 2014 success anymore and that the reasonable concerns can now finally be taken seriously.

1. Just blame it on Mesut Ozil. Like every body does.
2. Mats Hummels is going to be haunted by that missed chance. Forever.
3. I still dont get why Low left out Leroy Sane. That offense needed a guy like him to spark something. That may have bit them back in their behinds.
-
I can't believe Germany lost to SK. Way too many Mexico fans in Los Angeles, but hope they get knocked out in the Round of 16 lol.
Now I want England to go all the way!
-
The day has thus far worked out about as well as possible for my fandom (without the US). My brother-in-law is Mexican (thus my niece and nephew are half Mexican) and the two closest exchange students my family had are from Sweden and Brazil, so those have been the 3 countries I've been rooting the most for. Sweden and Mexico are in, now Brazil just needs to take care of business for a perfect day.

Brazil vs Mexico would absolutely be epic at your place, I reckon. . .
-
Not being directly involved to this group I loved they way the games went. I can't say the same about the Germans watching it with me but they were honest... Germany sucked. Even Hummels said it himself. They haven't had a game in the last year.
Rebuild time I guess....
BTW I wish Serbia performs the miracle today....

I know you're being sarcastic, but this isn't on Özil (although he also played like crap). The entire team was bad today, which means it's on the coach. The mentality of the team is just infuriating, and has been for a long time now.
I just saw a video analysis by former Bundesliga coach Stanislawski on german TV, and it was even worse than I remembered. It's like several players didn't even participate. Nobody wanted the ball, nobody made that extra step to get into a position were he could receive the ball from the ballhandler. Lots of beautiful fancy passes into nowhere.
Hindsight is 20/20, but I'm not sure Sane would have changed anything. Sane has twelve caps to his name, and not a single one of those games was good. Some were downright horrific. The argument to leave him at home was that Germany would face mostly teams who would try to park the bus, and Löw wanted to play a slow, methodical possession style to counter that, which really doesn't suit Sane's style.
Yeah, we did play a slow, methodical possession style. Just not a very good one... which, again, is on Löw. Then again, Germany also has a serious talent issue, right now. Many of the younger players just aren't as talented as the previous generation. I mean, when was the last time Germany produced a striker of international calibre? Gomez, twelve years ago? Does he even count?
-

That is true. One player couldn't have saved Germany
But imho not calling him made the old guard feel complacent.

Against parked busses you need wingers who can go one on one too.
Anyway , to day ww hope for engalnd to finish second and follow the easiest path. Although it is a given that Southgate will win it!!

The FOX Sports ticker has Japan qualifying.
Can someone explain this to me? They are both tied in points, and in goal difference, so how did they determine the tie breaker?

Sorry You are right.... i was listening to something and got confused
Japan qualifies because they have better disciplinary record(yellow and red cards) than Senegal.
Sad for Senegal but you don't even play for a draw.....

What the hell was Rojo doing there?
Mbappe was going away from goal. It was a bad situation but Rojo only made it worse.

Wow, Mbappe

Wow, Mbappe
Mbappe looks like a future Ballon D'Or winner. He has destroyed Argentina's defense in this match.

The pace he showed when he earned the penalty was insane!

Uruguay, always put a good squad on the pitch. I love them. Teamwork, stars play within a system.
-
Happy for Uruguay. Do not find that Portugal team likeable despite having several players I really like (like Bernardo Silva & Joao Mario).
Uruguay's team ethic is something else. Special group.

37km/h.... That is insane! He is definitely special
I hope Kavani is not seriously injured.

Koke doing too many sideways passes. Both Ramos and Pique are looking more adventurous going forward than Koke is. They are at least trying to make forward passes.
They need to bring Thiago on. He was key to making Spain more attacking under Lopetegui.
-
They are trying to walk with the ball into the net... Like the are afraid the shoot the ball!

A bit out of topic.
I'm so happy we (Arsenal) are getting Lucas Torreira. The master class he showed yesterday vs Portugal is something we sorely need there.
-
They are trying to walk with the ball into the net... Like the are afraid the shoot the ball!
The problem for me is Koke = too many of their attacks are being slowed down by his negative passing. He is the creative midfielder there alongside Busquets. Koke needs to be the one to bring the ball forward as a dribbler or as a forward passer. He is not doing either of those things. He keeps passing it laterally & handing off responsibility to Pique + Ramos.
It has been a terrible performance from Koke. And he is still on the pitch. Unbelievable.
Edit: You see Pique now ignoring him on a couple of occasions. Just bringing the ball forward himself because he knows Koke is not doing it.
Edit: There isn't enough space higher up the pitch for Isco and Co. The deeper creative midfielder (Koke) is the one in space. He needs to be the one to bring the ball forward, draw defenders and then make a forward pass to someone who now has more space because of the aggressive play from the deep midfielder (Koke). Koke is not doing that and that is allowing Russia to stay deep and smother the attacking midfielders.
Spain need Thiago.
-
Wow! Shouldn't that be a penalty on Russia?
The defender's arms completely had Gerard Pique around him. How is that not a penalty?
-
Spain should put Pique up front and lob high passes into him. Try for knock downs.
They are taking too long to get the ball into the box. Wasting time.

It's the barcelona effect... But Barcelona has Messi and spain aspas. Against a parked bus you need many big bodies in the box. Spain wanted pass all the way to the goal line....
Usually the most active keeper during the game performs better in the penalties
My bet was on Spain, they were awful so let's go Russia!!

Who, Koke might have actually lost the game for Spain!

Then again, FIFA is the most corrupt organization in the world playing a tournament in one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

The top 2 teams and the top 2 players are out. The happiest people in the world right now aren't the Russians, they're the Brazilians.

I was rooting for Spain but I was fine with a no call there. Both sides were playing handsy and while there was contact I think he flopped and tries to oversell the contact.

WHAT A SAVE BY KASPER SCHMEICHEL!
My God!

What a performance by Schmeichel, and Daniel Subasic.

amazing to see how horrible world class players are in penalty kicks. Do they not practice?
Penalty kicks should never be kicked to the middle of the goal. You also have much better odds if your kicks are grounders. Lift the ball off the turf and you give the goalkeeper a better chance. Lift it high enough and you risk kicking the ball over the bar. Keep the ball on the ground and keeper has much more difficult time getting there.

You are oversimplfy things here. Scoring a penalty is not that hard in a practise mode. But against a cat reflex goalie, 60 thousands in the stands, after playing 2 hours and the whole nation breathing down your neck...

Not just that, but sometimes when a player kicks the penalty, he will keep it on the ground BUT also on just 1 side of the goal. If a goalie dives to one side and the ball is kicked there, it's a miss and a save by the goalie. That's how Modric was stopped in the 116th minute. Great kick but the goalie made a 50/50 call and dove to his left, and thus stopped it.
It's not as easy as people think. The hesitation before a kick and seeing where the goalie is looking/leaning is a lethal method some players use. Now you could hope to elevate the kick and hope it goes over the goalie diving near the ground, but there's also a big risk that it sails over the crossbar (which we saw happen in the group stages of the WC as well to some teams - like Panama I believe).

Yes there is a lot of luck in penalty kicks. Less good shots sometimes go in while better shots are saved, just due to blind guess by the goalie. On of the goals saved by the Croatian goalie (the first or second one I think) was an awesome kick. The goalie guessed right but still barely reached it with fully outstretched arms. No shame in that "miss" at all...(Croatian goalie looks 6'8" on tv..not sure his actual height)
-
Actually the hardest ball to stop is one in the upper corner. There is no way a keeper can get that high and far on a dive. Those are just by far the easiest kicks to miss which is why they aren't used much
-

TP.
It is rare to see a game where goalkeepers save 6/11 PKs.
Croatia to the title!
Šubašić saved the last one, hence my Man of the match honor would go to him.
-
Looks like I missed some good matches today. Kind of sucky working 3rd shift and trying to stay up or wake up early to watch the games. Plus I lost a lot of motivation once my team Portugal was put out. Felt like they got robbed on 2 no calls late in that game lol.
Was really hoping for that Ronaldo v messi matchup which we may never see now
-
I can't find the book now with the math but just the small forward step a keeper takes helps cover almost the whole goal. It is much more difficult than it looks . But players should be able to shoot better. The overtime penalty modric took was more like a pass to the keeper
-

I learned/read years ago that:
- PK is realized at a 79% rate.
- That it is best to stay in the middle (highest chance to stop the shot mathematically).
Still GKs psychologically feel that it seems as they are doing nothing, and rather jump to the side
- PK within a regular time (90 mins) are more accurate than those made in the shootout. Basically, it is like a FT's in basketball. Many hit them, but they hit them less frequent in high-pressure situations.
Modrić is not our best PK taker, but as a Cap, he just took the responsibility. He also did already score one against Nigeria. I felt as he waited for Schmeichel to fall on his ass/pick a side, but Kasper made him wait too long and the shot was a blank. However, facing Schmeichel again he overcame the mental hole, scoring it (barely :D).

Actually no I am not oversimplifying ... world class players should do better than what I have seen ...some of the kicks are flat out atrocious. I am not saying they are easy, but i have seen some players just blast the ball down the middle. You should practice sidestepping the ball to the far angle keep the ball on the ground . By the way the referees should not let the keepers move forward before the ball is kicked that is a violation.

Many of the world sports elite, chess GMs, and even champions have made some unexplainable blunders.
Like missing a checkmate in one (!?):
WC Kramnik - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYOES3zZDu0
Ivanchuk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAYJIEB0lJU
or not being entirely present in the moment
WC Karpov - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10rV41kWiqY
WC Carlsen - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxc5ZqSQ9C8
These are just a few examples.
How would you explain those?
It is not like they don't practice or don't have the mental capability to do so.
My explanation is that humans are emotional and often irrational beings. They have the ability to work mistake-free, like machines, but just for a small amount of time and where the pressure is alleviated.

First 15mins and Mexico looks good again
I D love so see them qualify over Brazil (Brazil = Lakers)
-
Japan is playing realy good. Instead of parking the bus like Russia they try to play football against an extremely talented team and OS far they should be proud with the performance. I wanted Senegal to qualify and Colombia instead of Japan but today's performance proves me wrong. Hope they can keep it up...
-
Japan looks more outclassed than Russia though, feels like BEL will get a goal or two the second half unless they can do more to have the ball. Hard to play so much scrambling D.

Belgium is the best team definitely but Japan tries to play football unlike Russia who played against lesser then Belgium opponent.
Japan just scored....!

This would be a HUGE upset if they hold on. (Still lots of time left though)
Belgium IMO is the best team left in the field (more complete & all-rounded)

Good. Hopefully England loses also, so this trying to lose crap ends.
Plus, it is nice to have it not be Brazil and a bunch of European teams. Need some variety (and yes I know Uruguay won also).

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing any team win as long as it's not Brazil. Brazil with Neymar are a cocky bunch and that annoys me (you see Neymar's comments after the game today?). Also Neymar acts like he suffers a career ending injury then gets up and acts like nothing happens (like Lebron) LOL. He does it way too often.

Wooooo Japan, good for them.
Hope they hold on now, love to see the upset. I did not expect this after watching the first half, suddenly I check the score and they're up 2!

I don't mind some arrogance, but yeah Neymar is a bit over the top.
I just hate it when Europe dominates. 2014 was a much better mix in the Round of 16 with just 6 European teams (though 4 made the quarters). This year had a real potential of just Brazil making the quarters, though Uruguay helped that a lot in their game.
Hopefully Japan and Colombia pull it out so that again just 4 European teams are in the quarters.
-
I thought Spain would win, then they fired their coach, giving me pause, and now they are out.
At this point, I think the Uruguay/France winner is going to win. They have both looked very good and have a lot of talent and balance. That said I wouldn't count out Croatia. They have been consistent and good all tournament. And who the heck knows with Brazil. They always have talent and they do keep on winning.
-
That header just floated in.....
-
2 2 wow... When they want they can choke any team to death... But they don't want to very often
-
Dang, two earned goals by Belgium though.
Hoping they pull it out still.

3 2
Big respect to Japan....

Wow gg

LOL this World Cup is amazing :P

Belgium-Japan was crazy.

Awww Mexico coach QQing that Neymar was clowning around. Suck it up, your team got beat by a better team.
That being said, that was a little B-move by Neymar lol. I hope Brazil gets bounced in the next round. Tired of them, too.
-
So Sweden reached the quarterfinals
... They have knocked out since the start of the qualifications Netherlands Italy and Germany...
Pretty good job. Against england or Colombia they have good chance to reach the semis.
-
England starting off brilliantly against Colombia. Dominating possession, pressuring the ball, giving Colombia nothing to work with. Dangerous on set plays too.
-
I am a bit frustrated by Colombia... They are really missing James
-
I am a bit frustrated by Colombia... They are really missing James
England are making their life miserable. Giving them nothing. Cutting off any type of counter superbly well. Forcing them to go against set defense. Colombia not really talented enough up front to create chances against 10-11 men behind the ball.
I haven't been a fan of Southgate but he has done a great job in this World Cup. England are really impressive. Difficult to play against more than anything. And capable of scrapping their way into some chances despite lacking some creativity in the middle of the park.
-
I was thinking the same about Southgate.. He was handed a tough job and faced a lot of doubt (quite underatably IMHO) and so far he has done a good job. But the way the tournament goes he has to reach the semis
-
This is going to be fun! Perfect header by Yerri Mina!
-
What an exciting world cup.
-
YES!!!!! Colombia score! 1-1! It's going to extra time!
-
England should take off Henderson or Dier for a more attacking midfielder. Like Loftus Cheek.
They don't create chances well enough with 2 holding mids.
-
Why was the goal disallowed?
-
Why was the goal disallowed?
It was blown dead because there were two balls on the field and the Columbian side threw it in before both teams were ready or the ref signaled to resume play.
-
Terrible coaching from Southgate since the equalizer.
Colombia sacrificed their 3 man defensive midfield to push men forward. That created more space in that area in central midfield. Southgate took off Sterling - a player who moves in between attacking midfield and up front - for an out-and-out striker in Vardy. Then took off Alli for Dier when trying to protect the lead. Costing his team a 2nd player who operates in that area.
So where England once had 3 players attacking those gaps they now only have 1 player -- and at a time when Colombia are more vulnerable there than before.
These were fine decisions when trying to protect the lead but Southgate has not reacted at all to his team conceding a goal. England need a goal now. Not to defend in numbers. They need to exploit that attacking midfield area. But Southgate isn't putting the players on the pitch to do that. Southgate needs to respond while their is still time.
England are a much better team than Colombia. I'd heavily fancy their chances if Southgate was proactive. But he has been inactive and he is costing his team in a big way. I don't fancy England at all in this setup.
Penalties ... I expect. Due to Southgate's ineptitude as much as anything else.
-
Uribe should have been on the pitch since the start. He is the only central mid for Colombia who can move the ball and create something.
It was such a negative team selection. 3 harriers / destroyers in midfield. Providing little to no help for the front 3 to work with.
-
Look at how deep Kane is having to drop to try and move the ball forward ...
Put on another attacking midfielder!
-
England should be in the driver seat here on the penalties.
Seeing what David Ospina can do vs penalty shootouts first hand, they should feel very comfortable.
-

Well, so much for that. . .
Why isn't he doing that at Arsenal...?
-
Ah boo! I wanted England to lose. Oh well. They deserved to win. They were much better throughout the game than Colombia.
I hope Sweden can pull it off in the next round though.
-
England won in penalties? What a weird World Cup...
-
Save by England's goalie was an infraction....he moved off the line before the kick. Columbia players did not appeal for infraction, silly.

Seems like every goalie moves early on every PK.

Go watch the PKs for England and the ones in prior matches.
Keepers are all coming off the line every time.
-
Colombia played far too selectively, passively, and cute for the majority of the second half failing to get any shot attempts on net. Yes, England's defense was very good, but Colombia didn't try enough either. I wish they spent more of the game playing more aggressively like they did in the final 15 minutes of regulation. That was some great effort.

and that explains a lot of the saves. Why are the referees allowing what is obviously a violation of the rules?

Are the four best teams on one side of the draw for the quarterfinals?
Is Uruguay the "worst" team on the top of the bracket (Brazil side)?
If yes, is England or Croatia considered better than Uruguay?
To me seems like all the favorites are on the same side...unavoidable?

Croatia is more talented but Uruguay is metally tougher (unless proven otherwise).
Obviously the one side is much stronger than the other but Germany and Spain with their awful performances caused this. I was hoping for an England VS Germany quarterfinal tbh!

If I would not be a Croat, I'd say Brazil: Belgium is the finals before the finals. Not dismissing the France and Uruguay, but so far they showed the most potent football.
-
Excited for today's games. I'll be cheering for Uruguay and Brazil today.
-
I don't understand Tolisso out on the left wing. Play Lemar. Lemar would be fantastic in this French team in this formation.
I don't know how you leave out Lemar ever. He is just so skillful and creates wonderful interplay between midfield and attack. Capable of playing inside as a roaming playmaker or out wide. Works well with everyone.

How umtiti is starting defender for France and Barcelona is beyond me....
His manager must be a wizard!

What kind of finishing is that from Sterling?
-
What's the over/under on how many years before Harry Maguire move to either Manchester United or Manchester City?
God, he's so good. What a get by Leicester City.
Also, LOL, Raheem Sterling.

8 of England's 10 goals in this year's World Cup have come from set pieces.
Incredible number. 80% of their goals.

What a goal. Great cross from Lingard. Perfectly placed.
Football might be, indeed, coming home.

This is brilliant.

If you are not a particularly supportive of Russia, Croatia is accepting all supporters with open arms.
With Q-finals still in play there is still a lot of time to hop on our train. :)

I'm going for England simply because they have strong Irish ties and the Celtics are Irish and reminds me of the C's.

Since Switzerland is no longer in it, I‘m rooting for Croatia to win it all.
They‘ve been such a joy to watch in this world cup and Croatia is a fantastic country with incredibly kind and generous people. Plus Rakitic grew up minutes away from my hometown (we were mad at him for a bit for choosing to play for Croatia rather than for us but at the end of the day I‘m still rooting for him).
Best of luck today Androslav!

Croatia is playing with fire here...
What I ve learned in this tournament is that you don't let the weaker side build confidence

That goal for Russia was crazy.
Hopefully Croatia can recover and bring the fire against the Russians.

I'm sorry, but I can't support Wink Vida and others after the sold Dinamo Zagreb game in which it deliberately lost with 1-7 to Olympique Lyon to ensure the elimination of Ajax.
-
WHAT. A. GAME!!!
Kudos to Russia though. They played their hearts out and made it this far when no one expected it. But Croatia deserved it too.
In my life I've seen and remembered just 4 World Cups (from 2006 onwards. Way too young/just born for 1998 and 2002 lol), and I think this is easily the best one I've seen, in terms of drama, surprises, parity, etc. ;D
-
I can't say I enjoyed the game but I agree with everything else.
This has been an good tournament. The 86 wc was better IMHO (I barely remember the 82) but since then this is by far the best

Thank you, what a thriller! Watched it in splendid atmosphere in beer house in Prague with newly acquainted fellow Croats and few Russians, who, hats off, showed a lot of dignity and sportsmanship in defeat. There were also supportive Germans and of course native Czechs, who as the 50th anniversary of the Soviet occupation approaches, were on our side too.
It was a perfect example of a "lower" quality game, we weren't dying in the beauty, but as it is with tough NBA playoff games it was a real struggle and the survivor won. We won two penalty shootouts in a row ... Both felt like playing Russian roulette. We showed great mental fortitude, which isn't our trademark TBH.
Kudos to Russians.

I attended that game, it was 1:1 at the halftime, and we were hoping for a solid result. We were sitting the upper part of the East stands. A truly strong cold wind was blowing and we lost 7:1 (left after 5:1). My father (a lifetime FC Dinamo fan) said: "Son, we have seen enough."
Let's just say that games like that (rigged) are the main reason I lost a lot of my love for the game.
As for Vida, he scored the huge 2nd goal for us yesterday. Usually when I criticize someone too, they also do well their very next game. :)

LET FLY WITH THE PREDICTIONS !!!!!!
-
It is much more difficult to predict the semifinal winners than the final...
I want England to qualify. I can't justify it thought. I think it is Croatia 51 England 49
Ths other semi is 50-50. I can't wait to watch kante against the Belgian counter attacks

It is the Euro final 4 (it was actually final 6 when the Swedes and Russians still in), IMO that's why it's so hard to pick. All teams are disciplined, tactically strong.
As you wrote: 51:49, 50:50.
One more thing.
I laugh at the media narrative English (then other all copied, it seems) created - Croats are tired after two 120 minute games.
Lol, we could have played the game yesterday. That's how tough we are, both physically and mentally. We played 3 ultra-physical teams (Iceland, Denmark, Russia) in a row and beat them on the pitch, both result wise and rib wise. We were trailing last 2 games - we still came on top in the end.
Mandžukić, read as; mən-JUKE-ich (Monday): "We are ready for the game today, this is a semi-final of the WC, there are no players who would complain about anything. Nevertheless, you will see it on the pitch"
That's how true lions speak.
Finals - Belgium:Croatia.
Winner - Croatia
-
What did you expect him to say ?
Even if he is dead tired he has to say what is exepcted of him to say. I m sure you can find the same quote from a Belgian , an English and a French player.
Having said that i doubt anyone is tired. They played just 30min more than england and they had 3-4 days of rest. That cannot have any effect on such a level of players.

Of course, he should say the same thing even if it is not the case, especially since Manjo is a very tough-minded and competitive individual.
Here, funny, he is owning the butcher Mascherano https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyx7562eaCM - Mascherano himself, along with his teammate Dybala, laughed as he was getting trolled. I swear I'd do that to CP3 or similar smaller stature barking dog if I played in the NBA.
Just as you said, no tired dudes around when they are about to accomplish the absolute peak of their playing careers and let's be frank their childhood dreams.

C'mon Belgium! They are looking a bit better with Mertens on for Dembele.Belgium have really struggled to get Lukaku or Hazard involved. Too much sideways football deeper in the pitch. Hopefully they can get this equalizer.

No need to watch the game today .... Sorry Androslav but it's coming home !! :D :D :D

A bit soon but I take it ;D

Oh boy. That is a bad start.

Lovren needs to calm down a bit....

I continue to be amazed at just how difficult England are making it for team's to play attacking football against them.
The English defense is excellent. Especially the defensive work done in midfield.

Felt like England got into the half and it settled in that they were 45 minutes away. They started playing passive, one eye on the clock type soccer. You saw it from like the 50th minute.
Croatia on the other hand, got just enough going late first half that they came into the half with that perfect mix of desperation and little confidence. Pushed the wings up, played with high intensity and a clear sense of urgency and slowly began to boss the game.
Perisec has been driving the excitement, but man Modric is such a steadying hand and an elite player.

Was sort of tongue in cheek. I've always sided with them in tournaments in the past. It's just now that they've gotten this close I've really contemplated what it would be like and the thought of people like Piers Morgan gloating is very unpalatable to me.

CROATIA!!!!

Croatia has been the best team in this tournament. Not much else need to be said. They have beaten everyone in front of them, including a decently tough group with Argentina, Iceland, and Nigeria. They beat 12th ranked Denmark (which tied France) and then the home team Russia in knockout before today. They have been consistently good on both sides of the ball and clearly have no problem winning games that go into extra time. They are battle tested and tough. I picked France before the semis, but I now think I'm going with Croatia.
-
Thank you, John Stones, for falling asleep and letting Mario Mandzukic slip thru you.
Really, thank you. You just won me $20.

Now beat France, Croatia.

Thank you guys for supporting Croatian team. Really special mix of guys. Trailing 3 games in a row in the knockout stage, and still comming out on top. Crazy! Here in Croatia is undescribable!

It’s quite hypocritical to be cheering on France with Mbappé flopping all over the place, lol

Too bad for England—they should've been up 2-0, maybe even 3-0, in the first half; blew some really good chances.
And it seemed to me like the officials really didn't want to give England many calls; numerous fouls by Croatia in the second half and extra time that weren't called.

They have only themselves to blame. Throughtout the tournament staying in the back and lettingthe ball to the opponent in order to preserve a 1 goal lead was a recipe to failure.
I have some issues with the ref too (lovren did his best the get a red card for example) but i think the result was fair
-
England thought it could win a game in first 10 minutes.
And the game lasted 120 minutes.
They were satisfied with the result, defending and relying on their 100+ year tactic - cross the ball from our own half and hope to hit the target man, and then somehow miraculously ball goes in. They have nice young players, but there are no maestros in the midfield with experience. England rarely has those.
Once we scored and it became apparent that they need to change their game plan, they just folded. Not showing any resilience or versatility. I don't think there is a question who deserved a win, it was plain to see. Their midfield was non-existent, especially since 45th minute and they couldn't even connect 3 passes a row.
I have to give them credit, they were the gentlemen in defeat, their selector taught them well, respect for that.

Well done Croatia. Good resilience and physicality to work your way back into the game and then win it after that 5th minute sucker punch.

For the 33 year old Modric the final will be the 69th game of the season being the creative midfielder for Real Madrid and not a central defender for some average team. Impressive!

You bet he is impressive!
Turning 33 in September.
He is no ordinary MF.
Midfielder, Americans :D
When you are as skilled, you can prolongue your career. Basically in any sport.
He is also close to a tireless marathon runner, conditioning wise.
You also got me thinking, what would be his NBA equivalent?
And I am leaning to Jason Kidd.
Makes all of his team's and teammates better.
Will play 20 years.
Spacial understanding - thru the roof.
Sports IQ and experience - legendary.
Durable, consistent.
Can score, but not his forte.
Excellent defender, demon in the passing lanes.
He is more laid back kind of a guy the Kidd was. Easier to get along with.
Who, in his book, Bill Simmons described him as a beautiful chick with extra small tits (scoring). Witty and can be pasted to Luka to an extent.
Modrić is not a natural scorer, nor is his long range shoot very powerful. But he, as Kidd (3pt shot), became decent to good at it with years.
As it was evident against Argentina couple of weeks ago.

Belgium's lack of killer instinct is costing them. They should have finished off England earlier. They were on top and creating chances but lacked focus at the finish. Their lax attitude has invited all this second half pressure from England. They deserve to concede and for this to go to extra time. Maybe even lose if they do not get their act together soon.

Sucks. Not looking forward to France defending all game now.

I hate to see teams as talented as France be so defensive.
I understand it for smaller teams who do not have the talent of the bigger teams but France has the greatest collection of talent from top to bottom in World Football right now. They should be trying to play better football than they have done in this World Cup.

The no time to move argument holds only if the ball changes direction towards the hand in very close range. That is not the case here. The German TV commentators agree with the call too(including Kahn and Nigeria's coach)

Intent is the key.
That was ball to hand. Not hand to ball.
The ball was too close. There is no time to react. From the France player's glanced or missed header. It was just too close. If there was 5-6 yards, okay, that is a penalty. But at that distance? With such little time to move out of new/unexpected trajectory? No way.

That is one of those ones that looks far worse in slo-mo replays than it actually was.

Anyways, I can't support that decision. I think that is pedantic refereeing. Completely over the top decision and one that risks ruining this match.

Agreed but your description is really about the first half. France played much better in the second half (I thought). Croatia had a bunch of missed opportunities.

Good show by our team.
France's first two goals were the breeze of luck that is necessary to be the WC winner.
Tough out, but historical result nevertheless.

Throttled? Croatia was the better team for the first half and probably the first 20 mins of the 2nd half (basically when I made my initial post). France played well on the counter after the 3rd goal but it was mostly due to Croats pushing up to get and score. The Croatian midfield had a master class exhibition on how to destroy the French midfield for 65 minutes.
Ultimately, scoreboard matters and France for the result but I don't think they played very well.

Im only one who hates soccer
Prob not the only one in the world, but maybe the only one who clicked on this thread. Most people know that the World Cup refers to soccer.
It is a decently fun game to watch, but I don't think this is the game that takes over America (like many have said). Yes, kids play soccer, but kids also participate in dance recitals. I feel like I've been to a million dance recitals- doesn't mean that they too are going to take over America anytime soon.
I honestly don't know how much the U.S. was missed in this World Cup. Most people I know/talk to don't seem to care that much.

Perisic was unbelievable this tournament.
He blew me away. Relentless and constantly dangerous. What a player.
-
I don't know why having the ball and passing it around in the midfield means playing better.

France deserved to win the WC.
They played with what they had, within themseves. World class athletes, defensive minded coach, and enough finishing in front of the goal, especially on the break, did it..
Croatia perhaps, made the more inspired artistic impression. But it wasn't our game result wise, even though we created chances and moved the ball well. But in the end, unlucky 1st goal came, some more bad luck at the second one and it is enough to decide a match such as this.
However, in a 4/5 hours our NT team will arrive from Moscow and get a epic parade today in Zagreb and throughout the whole Croatia. It is a day for celebratation and pride.

http://en.protothema.gr/croatia-football-team-to-donate-world-cup-prize-money-to-needy-children-fund/
all the players and coaching staff of the Croatian national football team decided to donate their 2nd spot share of the Russian World Cup prize money pool to the special charity funds for Croatian children.
That means something close to 20m Euro !

That is the country share not necessarily the players share, but it is still awesome.

That is what i think too but by reading their announcment it is clear they mean the whole amount. maybe there is an error in the translation
I don't know if fifa is kidding or not with the best 11 ....
Lloris
Trippier, Varane, Lovren, Young
Paulinho, Modric, Hazard
Neymar, Griezmann and Mbappé.
seriously ????
Best keeper was Courtois but keeper of the best 11 is Lloris ?
Young ????????
Paulihno and not rakitic or Witsel or DeBruyne or Perisic?
NEYMAR ???? The laughing stock of the tournament instead of Lukaku or Kane or even Cheryshev ??? there are at least 15 more suitable than neymar !
i am speachless........

I am speechless........
Squads like this are like those all NBA teams, DeRozan or DJ slip in and I'm like :o What?
DeBruyne is definitively missing as he was simply superb the whole tournament, in both, "last pass" distribution and exploiting empty spaces with incisive runs.
At least Kane wasn't in.
IMO, the lamest golden boot in my lifetime.
British always blow their players out of proportions, and that is often annoying.
Of Kanes his 6 goals:
- 5 were against Panama and Tunis (think Phoenix and Orlando)
- 3 were from 11 meters
- 0 goals in 4 knockout stage games
-
I wouldn't have picked Kane for the best 11 but even he had better tournament than Neymar.
I don't remember such controversial selections in the nba. There were amost every year objections but nothing that ridiculous like for example picking Lin in 1st All NBA or the NBA MVP not being 1st team All NBA

I'd have chosen the following team:
Courtois (Belgium); Vrsaljko (Croatia), Varane (France), Maguire (England), Marcelo (Brazil); Pogba (France), Modric (Croatia), Coutinho (Brazil); Mbappé (France), Ronaldo (Portugal), Hazard (Belgium).
To me Brazil was the best footballing team this tournament. Especially their left side was very good, that's why I included Marcelo en Coutinho in the team. England reached the semis due to their dominance in the air, in particular Maguire, although not flashy that deserves a spot. It was a close call between Meunier and Vrsaljko.
De Bruyne had some great moments, but he wasn't a big factor on the pitch against the top teams (Brazil (2nd half), France and England). That's why he doesn't make the cut. Ronaldo might be a surprising pick, but to me he was the best player in the group stage and that's why I gave him the edge despite only playing 4 matches. Neither striker of the semi finalists impressed me.

Yep, Neymar's selection is a joke. How was Neymar better than Perisic/Cheryshev (or even Coutinho for that matter)? The same goes for Paulinho over Kante.
My first 11 would be
........................Courtois......................
Vrsaljko.....Varane.....Godin.....Marcelo
.............Kante.....................................
.....................................Modric............
Mbappe............Hazard.............Perisic
......................Griezmann....................
Couldn't think of a standout left back. Marcelo did nothing special but he is still a world class LB. Missed one game due to injury (vs. Mexico) and his absence was felt immediately. Filipe Luis (his backup) was possibly the worst Brazilian player on the pitch that day.
Alternatively, I'd pick Augustinsson. Was voted man of the match against Mexico (scored the first goal). Not to mention, Sweden had a pretty nice tournament as well (they reached the quarter finals).
Hate to leave De Bruyne out of my first 11. It was either him or Griezmann. Opted for Griezmann cause France won the world cup.
Hazard..........De Bruyne...........Perisic
.......................Mbappe.......................

Pogba over Kante ? IMHO if it wasn't for Modric Kante should have won the MVP
