Game Notes
The Celtics and Nets meet for the 4th and final game this season.  This is also the final game of the regular season for both teams.  The Nets have been closing out the season strong with a 3 game win streak leading into this game.  The Cavs own their pick, courtesy of the Celtics trade for Kyrie and so they have no reason to tank.

The Nets are 13-27 on the road and they are 5-5 in their last 10 games.  The Nets have lost their last 8 games against the Celtics.  The Celtics are 26-14 at home and are 6-4 in their last 10 games.  They are playing in the second of back to back games and are 8-5 on the second night of back to back games.

All 3 games between these teams have been close.  The Celtics won 109-102 at Brooklyn on November 14.  The Celtics won at Boston 108-105 on December 31.  And then, on January 6th, the Celtics won 87-85 at Brooklyn, just before they took of for their game in London.  The Nets play hard and you have to take them seriously.

The Celtics have Kyrie Irving (knee), Daniel Theis (knee) Marcus Smart (thumb), Gordon Hayward (ankle)  out for certain.  Guerschon Yabusele is questionable with a sore knee.  Terry Rozier and Al Horford are out for rest.  I'm just taking a guess that Shane Larkin and Marcus Morris will start, but it may well be anyone in the starting lineup.

The Nets also have a long list of injuries going into this game.  DeMarre Carroll (hip), Joe Harris (ankle), Jeremy Lin (knee) and Isaiah Whitehead (wrist) are out for them.  Caris LeVert has been out with a foot injury and is listed as probable for this game.

Key Matchups

Shane Larkin vs D'Angelo Russell
D'Angelo Russell missed the first 3 games between these two teams with a knee injury.   He is averaging 15.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists on the season.  Shane, or whoever starts, will need to slow him down.

(https://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/202694.png) vs (http://ak-static.cms.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/headshots/nba/latest/260x190/1626178.png)
Marcus Morris vs Rondae Hollis-Jefferson
Hollis-Jefferson is averaging 14.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists.  In the first game, between these two teams, he had 16 points and 9 rebounds and in the second game, he had 22 points and 12 rebounds.  He is also one of the better defenders on the team.  Marcus, or whoever starts, will need to make him work on both ends of the court.

Honorable Mention
Jaylen Brown vs Spencer Dinwiddie
Dinwiddie started at the point in the first 3 games and put up decent numbers, scoring 20 points in the last game and 12 points and 11 assists in the first game.   He is averaging 12.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game.

Keys to the Game
Defense
- Defense wins games.  The Celtics are still tops in the league with a defensive rating of 101.5  Their defense will be tested against the Nets, who are averaging 106.7 points per game.  The Celtics are averaging just 104.0 points per game and so in order to win they are going to have to continue to make defense their priority and slow down the Nets' offense.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics need to be the more aggressive team in going after loose balls, rebounds, 50/50 balls, and in going to the basket.  They also have to be aggressive on defense.  They have to be the team that wants it more and they have to play that way for 48 minutes.  They can't let themselves play with less than 100% effort because they are playing the Nets because the Nets always play hard themselves.  They have to be the team that plays harder.

Rebound - The Celtics need the ball in order to score.  They need to rebound on the offensive end to give themselves extra possessions and to keep the Nets from getting fast break points.  They also need to rebound on the defensive end to keep the Nets from getting second chance points.  The Celtics are averaging 44.2 rebounds per game compared to 44.4 for the Nets.  They need to give extra effort on the boards as a team in order to beat the Nets to the rebounds.

Take Care of the Ball - The Celtics have to stay focused and take care of the ball.  They  have to value every possession and make good passes and find the open man for the best open shots.  They can't get sloppy and give the Nets extra chances by allowing them to steal the ball.   The Nets play hard and will try to disrupt the passing lanes and the Celtics have to be careful to keep them from doing so.

X-Factors

Final Game - It's the final game of the season.  The Celtics have nothing  on the line to play for.  They are locked into the 2nd seed and the biggest priority will be to finish the game with everyone healthy and on the same page going into the playoffs.  Brad may choose to sit some of the players for rest or limit their minutes.

Back to Back - The Celtics are yet again playing on the second night of back to back games.  Playing against the Wizards on Tuesday, they expended a lot of energy and so may not have the energy in this one to pull out if any of the rotation players sit and especially if the Nets play to win the game.

Time to put the death lineup of Yabu, Semi, Nader, Larkin and Baynes. We have more to gain by resting our starters. Bench getting more experience, worst pick for Cavs and avoiding injury risk for our key players.

It's funny how many of us, myself included, want Brooklyn to be as good as possible so we didn't give away a good pick.  It's all going to come down to lotto luck at this point anyway.  Go Nets.  One last going away present!

CBS needs to rest the starters of or play them half a game

they need to rest

beating or pounding the Nets does not really help prepare for the next step

I would be ok with resting all the starters today.  I know we are short handed and that may be difficult, but who wants to risk an injury to Brown, Tatum, Morris, Baynes in a completely meaningless game?

Definitely going to be  flipping among the relevant games tonight, especially with the Maine Red Claws out there tonight.

In this Bucks game, I understand why Milwaukee has all of their guys playing tonight, as it's the first time all year long that everyone is healthy.

However, surely they are planning on losing this game, as it's clearly in their best interests for playoff matching since a win guarantees them a first round matchup with Cleveland.

I am sure all of the young Cs with no chance of being on the team next year are psyched that Baynes is getting every shot on the offensive end.

This has to implode at some point, right?

Even with Reddick and Embiid out? I don't really think so.

This 76ers team is so overhyped and exaggerated right now due to this win streak. But you can tell what's going on when you look at the schedule - 13 of their 15 consecutive wins have come over current lottery teams.

I see them struggling to get out of the first round, especially without Embiid, and I think someone like Washington will probably upset them.

Just got home from work.  I'm actually relieved to see our key players being rested.  Knowing our luck this season and the competing years of the Big 3 era (save 2007-2008) someone would have suffered an injury.

Look at the score on Bucks/6ers....

I mean, they're shooting ungodly, unsustainable percentages, especially beyond the arc, so of course they're up. I also suspect that there's a bit of tanking going on with the Bucks, as it never made sense for them to win tonight anyways.

You seriously wouldn't take the Bucks' roster over a Philly roster sans Embiid and Reddick (not long-term, just in a single series)?

We're just crushing BKN on the boards right now.  It's nice to be up on offensive rebounds for a change after all those years of being a poor rebounding team, even if this is a meaningless game.

What is happening this game? We are missing our top 8 players plus Theis (who some might consider better than Baynes/Monroe - in which case we are missing our top 9 players).

BKN has no reason to lose this game - in fact winning just guarantees Cleveland gets a worse pick. How in god's creation are they playing so poorly (and without passion). This is about the sorriest performance I have ever seen from a team. There is absolutely no reason this Cs team should win an NBA game. Even the best G-League team might be favored against them!

If you had the Milwaukee Bucks getting 31 points from the Sixers in the first half tonight?

With the bucks probable loss, we need either wiz or heat to win tonight to play miami

They’re both losing at halftime

As of right now, it looks like we play wizards in 1st round

Isnt it if All three looses ( Bucks stay at 6, Heat are favored over Wiz )...then we get to play the cHeat?

Actually, according to Grande, the only scenario where we play the Wiz is if both MIA and WAS win...which isn't exactly likely at this point.

Both lose, we get MIA; only one of them loses, we get MIL.

Baynes is tearing BKN a new one.  Just goes to show how good NBA players are.  You can see Baynes working on those 15 footers during shooting warmups before the game and at half time and he makes almost all of them.

Just having the Heat lose will do the job and get us away from Washington in the first round in favor of Milwaukee at this point, but Washington also losing would give us Miami in the first round, which I'm not too sure which one I'd prefer at this point. I think I'm fine either way, as I think we win both series.

Our team tonight:

A. Baynes
A. Nader*
J. Bird*
S. Larkin
G. Yabusele
G. Monroe
S. Ojeleye*
J. Gibson

Our team in Summer League 2017 (top 8, roughly):

K. Allen
J. Bird*
J. Brown
J. Tatum
A. Nader*
S. Ojeleye*
A. Zizic
D. Jackson

So, take out the players who were on both teams and you have:

Baynes/Monroe/Yab/Gibson/Larkin vs.

Zizic/Tatum/Brown/Allen/Jackson

Who ya got in a 7 game series?

and HOW many games did Irving miss or he was hurting and could not play up to his stds. a bunch

If Irving is 100 % all season , Celtics would be pushing 60 wins.

Underlooked part of tonight’s win by Boston and loss by Toronto (failing to reach 60 and hit their record) - could very well influence the Coach of the Year award. Utah losing to Portland and not getting that three seed could also affect it.

Imo, you can’t go wrong with Stevens, Brown, or Snyder. All did superb jobs this year given their individual contexts.

Yeah, it's funny, I thought the same thing. 60 wins is a magic number of sorts in the NBA, and those number matter. I think Westbrook would not have won the MVP last year if he averaged 9.8 rebounds per game.

55 wins who would have thunk it after Hayward went down?

Let's dig up the preseason predictions, people predicting we would regress and not even win 53.

To win 55 games with the injuries we had is pretty astonishing.

If we were as healthy as Toronto was, we probably approach 65.

I'd say roughly 20 for Irving, 10 for Horford, 10 for Brown, 30 for Smart, 30 for Morris, 20 for Theis, and of course 81 for Hayward.

That's a lot of [dang] games missed.
