And the Giants!

Any day the Steelers, Colts and Giants lose is a very good day in the NFL.

Bills, Lions, Jaguars, 49ers (probably) and Bengals win.  If these 5 have ever all won on a Sunday, it's been a long while.

The Jets-Cowboys.  Might be the 1st time in decades I've rooted for the Cowboys. Not sure I can do it.

Cam Newton is making my "bust" prediction look pretty foolish.

Even tebow had a couple big games last year yardage wise.

I don't think Jimmy Clausen did. Also Tebow didn't set any rookie records, except for awesomeness.

Jimmy Clausen straight up sucks.

Don't get me wrong, what Cam Newton did should be very encouraging to Panthers fans.  What was more encouraging to me was that he was so disappointed about the loss afterwards.  That shows he's a competitor and what he cares about most is winning, not the yardage numbers he puts up.

It's hard to get too excited by the record, however, when you look at the list of other rookies that have had huge passing debuts.  The list includes Peyton Manning and Ryan Fitzpatrick, but otherwise not a single quarterback I've even heard of.

The list:

1. Cam Newton - 422 yards
2. Otto Graham - 350 yards
3. Ed Rubbert - 334 yards
4. Ryan Fitzpatrick - 310 yards
5. Mark Rypien - 303 yards
6. Peyton Manning - 302 yards

Otto Graham is a Hall of Fame QB and a 9-time All-Pro, who won multiple MVP awards and several championships.

Ed Rubbert was a member of the Redskins' "replacement" players team, and his claim to fame apparently is being the inspiration for Keanu Reeves' character in The Replacements.  His NFL career was three games long.

Mark Rypien was a two-time Pro Bowler and was Super Bowl MVP and Offensive Player of the Year in 1991.

Obviously, nobody can project Newton's career based upon one game, but the list of guys isn't as obscure as you think.

Hm.  Interesting.  I guess that is a bit more encouraging.  However, Fitzpatrick and Rubbert's presence on the list suggests that it clearly could be a fluke.

In any case, I'll be much more impressed if Newton consistently throws 200 yards.  One great game is just one great game (e.g. Brandon Jennings' 55 point game didn't make him the next Iverson).
