Game Notes

After a tougher than expected OT win last night in Phoenix, the Celtics travel to Utah to take on the Jazz in the second game of a back to back. Boston will have to go at it tonight without Kyrie Irving, as Kyrie is attending a memorial service for his recently passed grandfather. This will open up a position in the starting lineup for either Marcus Smart or Terry Rozier. I'm going with Rozier thinking Stevens might try to hook into some of the Magic that Rozier showed last year when he started for an injured Irving. The Celtics will sorely miss Kyrie as he has been nothing but sensational averaging 29.4 points, 5.1 assists and 5.1 rebounds over the past 5 games.

Tonight also marks the first time return of former Jazz star, Gordon Hayward, to Vivint Smart Home Arena in two years. Hayward, of course, couldn't return to play in Utah last year as he broke his leg and dislocated his ankle in a gruesome injury 6 minutes into last season. Gordon says he is looking forward to returning to Salt Lake after spending his first seven years in the NBA with the team that drafted him. Hayward says he expects to be booed heavily.

Utah has gotten off to a very inconsistent start to the season after having large off season expectations following the unexpected success from last season where they won 48 games and went to the Western Conference semifinals. Most of reason for Utah's inconsistent start can be attributed to their defense. Last year, the Jazz had the second best defense in the league after Boston but this season they have dropped to be the 17th best defense in the league resulting in giving up 6 more points per game than last season. Utah's offense, meanwhile is about middle of the pack when compared to the rest of the league. They have picked up their pace but still put up less shots per game than everyone else in the league except two teams. However, where the Jazz do generate a lot of offense is at the free throw line as they are not afraid to take it inside through contact. They take most free throws per game in the NBA creating 21.3 points per game.

The Jazz are led offensively by second year player, Donovan Mitchell, who is putting up 22.4 points per game, however, he is one of the least efficient shooters on the team. Mitchell's inefficient shooting is offset by reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert, who leads the league in FG%, 2-point FG% and eFG% at 71.9% for all three. Gobert is having his best year, scoring 16.4points and 13.1rebounds per game, both career highs. The Jazz have 5 other players averaging double digits points per game led by former Celtic Jae Crowder, who is putting up a career high 14.2 points per game off the bench.

If Boston is going to win this game the are going to have to play a full 48 minute game as they can't continue to have horrific 2nd quarters or quarters like last night's first quarter where they shot just 18% from the field. The offense is also going to need someone or someone's to step up and have big nights offensively to make up for the loss of Kyrie Irving. Defensively, the Celtics need to contain the Jazz' inside the paint game and also not let someone have an explosion of points against them like they have their last three games with Devin Booker, Jamal Murray and Victor Oladipo having huge games.

Jazz 10-0 run after Celtics 10-2 run

Playing frightened and tentative. I could see it as soon as they came out of the timeout.

We need to stop playing like we're afraid of expectations and instead be in scrappy underdog mode. That's how teams win consistently.

The good news is that it is pretty obvious watching the C's that they are a lot more talented than just about any team they have played.

C's are faster, more athletic, more physical, can create great shots.

The problems have been between the ears. Coke jobs, lack of concentration and communication. Lack of cohesion and execution.

Once we figure it out we are going to dominate this league.

Oh dear.

Must say this like 40 times a game

easily

GROUNDHOG day!

They are literally fast break starters for the other team.

Why do the C's go away from what's working? It really seems at times they literally take turns.

I’m much happier with their offense this game actually. It’s their defense which is a problem. Why can’t we play well on both ends of the floor at the same time?

Just gave up a transition bucket there soon as Smart was subbed out

It was far worse when the C's summer league team played Utah in the summer league last season.

Closest thing I've seen to a real live lynch mob, the malice emanating from the crowd was beyond toxic. Sad thing is it was aimed at frikkin' summer league players. Pretty embarrassing display.

I hate that the NBA put his return game so early in the season, much earlier than previous years. He’s clearly far from back to normal, and it just makes him look bad.

Feels like Jaylen can't buy a foul from the refs sometimes. Three that last one up expecting a foul I think, didn't get it. Feels like our teem in general doesnt get those.

Does Ingles ever miss?

Why can't Hayward shoot like Ingles...

Hayward is fast becoming the secong coming of Chandler Parsons post injury.. Just has no feel for the game and has been abysmal in all facets... If he is still like this come January then he will never be the same GH of 2017.

Seriously???

Ingles is one of the top 10 SF's in the game right now. Anybody still sleeping on him is missing out.

The guy is averaging like 12ppg and shooting 90% tonight. He is not top-10 SF.

His performance hasn't been that different to Paul George when George came back from his injury. PG13 averaged about 8 points as well at the end of the 2014-15 season when he came back from his injury the previous year.

January would be a true yardstick yes but right now I think people are expecting far too much of him.

The difference though is that GH was a way better player than Parsons when they respectively got their contracts.

Parsons IMO was wildly overrated, odds were decent he was gonna fall off a cliff injury or not. GH has a much better chance to be a great player again because he was actually a great player to begin with.

He averages 12/4/4, is one of the best shooters in the league and gets over 1.5 steals per game. There’s an argument for top 15, maybe too 10 IMO

Kyrie

Hayward/Tatum
Baynes
Horford

I know our regular starting 5 needs minutes together for reps, but maybe can find some time within the game.

Need Theis back to make Baynes starting viable. Or for RWill to improve his conditioning and foul tendencies, among other things.

I’d go
Kyrie
Smart
Tatum
Mook
Horford

Think it would go a long way to help our consistency in game

Al is so soft tonight. Embarrassing. Favors is powning him.
It still baffles me that he averaged 18/10 in Atlanta

Jaylen's shooting struggles this season are getting really concerning.  Maybe those workouts with TMac weren't so great after all.

T-Mac ruined Jaylen, Kobe ruined Tatum. Its a league wide conspiracy against the Celtics!. But seriously, I think the young guys will figure it out. Jaylen is still getting good looks, they just arent dropping. And Tatum just needs to get back to what worked last year.

Good last couple of plays by Tatum, but he needs to have better court vision and see Smart trailing there for the easy layup. At least he drew a foul and hit the free throws, though.

I’ve always thought that was the plan. Davis is biding time, he will ask for a trade in the summer. Ainge probably already knows what the package is going to be, just needs to wait for Kyrie’s new contract.

Maybe it takes Rozier’s contract and will wait until midseason, but I really think it’s gonna happen.

For better or worse Brad tends to stick with guys. Tonight Brown didnt have it, and he probably should have been out earlier, But thats not really the way Brad functions. Some nights that faith is rewarded, some nights its not. Overall tho I don't mind it, I think it pays off long term.

Brown is seriously p---ing me off.  He passed up a transition attack with only Rubio in his way for a Tatum outside shot.

Seriously. I don't understand where people get this idea that he has a solid BBIQ. Him and Rozier are right there with each other as the worst BBIQs on the team. Just a really frustrating player whose ceiling is limited by his lackluster BBIQ.

His BBIQ is fine. Thats a good pass for a wide open corner three that Tatum passed up. That pass is the NBA today, I get that people don't like it but its a play you are gonna see a lot.

He wasn't wide open.  By the time the pass reached him a defender was already closing on him.  By the time he drove the ball, the defense had recovered and Jaylen couldn't get a clean shot off in the paint.  He could have, and should have, been called for a 3 second violation as well.

It was a bad pass.  His best strength is playing in transition.  There's no way Rubio can guard Brown when he's attacking with a full head of steam in transition.

Another bad loss for this team. It’s gonna click at some point right?

Eventually...may be wrist slitting time for another couple of months though

I wasn't referring to that. I was referring to that ridiculous early top of the key three and him taking it up straight against Gobert on the block. Two really dumb shots that killed our momentum.
The one against Gobert was baffling. If you're a big, yeah, that's your game. If you're a 6'7" wing going up against a top 3 shot blocker in the NBA you've got some things to reconsider

Wow, guys! Feel proud! You beat a team that:

1) Was missing it's best player;

2) Was on the second night of a back to back of an OT game;

3) Was playing on the back end of a long road trip; and

4) Was playing as the away team.

They act like they just won a playoff series.  ::)

For a guy who gets victimized by so many uptakes, you'd think Jaylen would learn to use an uptake himself once in a while

Turned into a decent game.

Can't help but like Mitchell.  I think he's a bit overrated (mediocre efficiency as a scorer) but he's a classy kid and fun to watch.

Another error down the stretch - keeping Brown in there and having Morris on the bench. Dumb decision given how much Brown hurt us down the stretch.

For better or worse Brad tends to stick with guys. Tonight Brown didnt have it, and he probably should have been out earlier, But thats not really the way Brad functions. Some nights that faith is rewarded, some nights its not. Overall tho I don't mind it, I think it pays off long term.

I guess he doesn't want to mess with people's confidence, pulling them out when they're sucking- as long as they are putting the effort in. Wants to give them a chance to get themselves back in it. I've seen him quickly pull out guys who aren't putting in the work on defense though.

Ya I partially agree. Trying to put it up against Gobert was a dumb one. That guy either block its, or perhaps more importantly just alter everything at the rim. You could see it on a couple big Tatum drives where Scal mentioned it. But I'm okay with that three, it was open and in rythm and at some point down 8 you need to hit some threes. I guarantee you when Smart passes him that ball (i think it was smart) he was expecting a shot. The trailer three is a shot you see alot.

Defense to Brad is non-negotiable I think. You need to do that to see the court. But he very rarely yanks a guy simply for missing shots. If he did Smart would never see the floor. Brad has a "play good defense, dont take bad shots and I'll let you play through it" mentality.

Just another example of what could go wrong, will go wrong. I really think we’ve been having some terrible luck. How many games has Gobert gone 5-5 FT?

We are getting everyone best shot and not handling it like a contender should.

I think if anything that leads to the false idea that he has a low basketball IQ. "Book smart, basketabll dumb" is a label a lot of guys get stuck with. Again, I have no problem in general with Brown's basketball IQ or decsion making. Dude just needs to make shots. Thats the case with all our guys. Nobody cares about Tatums shot selection if he shoots 45-50% from mid range. Rozier looks awesome when he knocks down his off the dribble threes. That trailer three is a great shot when Brown hits it. Guys need to start putting it through the hoop.

Wow, guys! Feel proud! You beat a team that:

1) Was missing it's best player;

2) Was on the second night of a back to back of an OT game;

3) Was playing on the back end of a long road trip; and

4) Was playing as the away team.

They act like they just won a playoff series.  ::)
I was waiting for confetti

Hopefully none of you are serious. They won a basketball game. Who cares how they celebrate it. A win is a win, and they made big shots, and Crowder looked motivated. Celebrating a victory in anyway is fine.

Celtics looked very happy last night too beating a college basketball team in overtime.

It is sad to look at the standings and see we are actually behind not only Toronto and Milwaukee but now behind the hapless Sixers and Indiana. We are a 1/2 game up on the Pistons.

And, already through 12 games most of the basketball people I listen to on NBA radio has already dropped us to the probable #3 best team in the East. They have already decided that Toronto & Milwaukee are better than us. I realize we have had a tough schedule but to have losses against Orlando and a game we should have won against Indiana hurts. We were pounded in the preseason by Cleveland who can't beat anyone else. It took a miracle to beat Phoenix in overtime with an all-time great performance by Kyrie.

Many of the people on this blog say it's early, don't worry. When should we start to worry? Brown & Tatum have been wildly inconsistent. Pretty much zero offense from the center position. Hayward has been slow and although I have liked some of his defense, rebounding and playmaking - he just can't even hit an open shot. Last night Donavan Mitchell drove several times on Gordon with little problem.

We are 1-3 on this road trip and it doesn't get any easier tomorrow night. Then next week we have Bulls the Raptors & Jazz on a back to back. I say those are 3 "must win" games. No more excuses about being early in the season and a long way to go. If we don't have enough heart to sweep those 3 then I will concede that we are at best a 3 seed.
