Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli announced Monday night that center Marc Savard has suffered a moderate concussion and it out indefinitely following a hit he took Saturday from Avalanche defenseman Matt Hunwick. Savard flew back to Boston Sunday and underwent testing on Monday.

"After being examined by the Bruins medical staff today, Marc has been diagnosed with a moderate concussion," Chiarelli said in a statement. "There is no timetable on his return and no further updates at this time."

The center missed the first 23 games of the season as he worked to come back from post-concussion syndrome, which stemmed from the hit to the head he took last March 7 from Penguins forward Matt Cooke.

Horrible news regarding Marc.  First and foremost Marc rest and get healthy hockey is just a game and not worth coming back to soon (again) and risking your life.

So, when is the NHL going to start taking concussions seriously?  When all of their superstars are either forced to retire (Lafontaine), are shells of their former selves (Lindros), or just constantly playing with their heads on a swivel?

I had some issues with how the NFL has attacked the players wallets for headhits in order to scare them straight, but perhaps that is what needs to happen in the NHL.

Don't get me wrong, there was nothing dirty with the hit last saturday, but the Cook hit that gave him the first concussion was brutal, as was the hit that gave Bergeron his concussion, and all that was given was a slap on the wrist.

They won't even protect the face of their league, and now Crosby is leading the charge against the league for not punishing the guys who have been headhunting against him.

Worst of all, the instigation rule has taken all the bite out of players trying to police things themselves, because they will be punished more for picking a fight with a dirty player, than that player will be for trying to decapitate all of the players that people pay to see.

I really think we are seeing the beginning of the end of the NHL.  If they do not find a way to get these dirty players off the ice, and instill some fear in them, there won't be any skilled players left.
