Game Notes
The Celtics host the Toronto Raptors for the first of 4 meetings this season.  They will meet again in Boston on March 31 and then twice in Toronto February 6 and April 4.   The Celtics are finishing a 3 game home stand while the Raptors are beginning a 3 game road trip.  Toronto is in 2nd place in the Atlantic Division and 4th in the Eastern Conference.

The Raptors are 3-3 on the road and have won their last 2 games.  The Celtics are 5-1 at home and have won 11 straight games.  Together these two teams have won 10 of the last 11 Atlantic division crowns with Boston winning 6 and Toronto winning 4.  Toronto has won the series 3 of the last 4 seasons and they won last season 3-1.

The Raptors have had the Celtics number for the most part for the past 3 years.  Toronto is 11-5 vs Boston since the 2013-14 season.  They have the most wins against the Celtics of any teams over that span.  Toronto is 40-9 vs Atlantic Division foes since the 2014-15 season and they are 8-4 over Boston during that span.

Kyrie Irving suffered a minor facial fracture after getting hit in the first quarter of the Hornets game by teammate Aron Baynes.  He is listed as doubtful for this game and expected to play through the injury wearing a face mask after that.  The good news is that Al Horford is listed as probable for this game.

I am guessing that Brad will start Marcus Smart at the point if Kyrie is out.  Smart was brought into the game when Kyrie went down in the first quarter of the Hornets game. And when the second half began Smart was once again on the floor with the starters.  I'm also guessing that Brad will keep Morris in the starting 5 with Horford and bring Baynes off the bench once again.

Brad may also decide to start Terry Rozier or Shane Larkin, who scored a season-high 16 points on Friday, if he doesn't go with Smart.  It's also possible that he may opt to leave Baynes in the starting lineup and bring Morris off the bench.    The Raptors have no injuries reported and their regular starters are listed here.

Key Matchups
(https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Smart_Marcus_bos17.jpg) vs (http://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Lowry_Kyle_tor14.jpg)
Marcus Smart vs Kyle Lowry
Lowry has given the Celtics problems in the past and so they need to pay particular attention to slowing him down.  He is averaging 5.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 6.5 assists.  The Celtics would like to have Kyrie to counter Lowry, but Smart's defense may be able to slow the Raptors offense down.

(https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/Brown_Jaylen_bos17.jpg) vs (https://basketball.realgm.com/images/nba/4.2/profiles/photos/2006/DeRozan_DeMar_tor17.jpg)
Jaylen Brown vs DeMar DeRozan
DeRozan is the Raptors best player and he is averaging 24.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.  Jaylen will need to play lock down defense to keep DeMar from having a big game.  With Kyrie likely out, Jaylen will also need to find his offense to give the Celtics a boost on that end.

Honorable Mention
Marcus Morris vs Serge Ibaka
Ibaka is averaging 13.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game.  He's always a threat to block shots and get second chance points  and so Morris needs to keep him out of the paint as much as possible.  He is also a threat from outside so he needs to stick with him on the perimeter as well.

Keys to the Game
Defense

Defense has always been and always will be the key to winning.   The Celtics have the best defensive rating in the league at 94.8.  The Raptors are 17th with a defensive rating of 103.8.  They need to play particularly tough defense against the Raptors since they are capable of putting up a lot of points in a hurry.  The Raptors are 7th in the league, averaging 110.1 points per game.  Especially if Kyrie is out, if the Celtics want to win, they are going to have to do so with lock down defense.

Be Aggressive

The Celtics must be the more aggressive team.  They have to be aggressive on defense, in going after loose balls, in crashing the boards,  and just all around going all out. They have to aggressively attack the basket. They need to start the game with that aggressive attitude and be aggressive through the whole game with no let up.

Rebound

The Celtics must crash the boards. They can't score if they don't have the ball. Much of rebounding is effort and desire. The Celtics have to be the team that puts out more effort from every player to go after rebounds.   The Celtics are 4th in rebounds at 47.6 per game.  The Raptors are 24th with 41.9 per game.  The Celtics have to continue crashing the boards in this game.

Play 48 Minutes - The Celtics have been coming out of the gates slowly and letting teams get a lead.  That has worked out against them vs the Magic and the Hornets, but if they give the Raptors a big lead, they will have a tougher time coming back.  They need to start strong and play hard right up until the final buzzer.

X-Factors
Home Game - The Celtics are still at home and several of the players mentioned that the crowd getting into the game helped them pull out a win against the Hornets and the Garden crowd needs to give the team a boost again in this one.

Next Man Up - The Celtics have been finding ways to win even without key players.  They did it when Morris couldn't play at the beginning of the season.  They did it when Hayward went down.  They did it when Al Horford was out with a concussion.  They did it when Jayson Tatum left the game with ankle soreness. And, they did it when Marcus Smart missed games with an ankle sprain.  Now, they have to find a way to win without Kyrie.  Who will step up their game in this one?

TP FLCeltsFan!!!

Going to be real tough without Kyrie, but thankfully Horford should be back.

But more importantly, we have talent, a deep roster, and of course, Brad Stevens  8)

Good test for the Boston defense. Who steps up on the offensive end today? I'm going out on a limb and say it's going to be Morris (not even sure thats a limb call but)

Last season I'd dread watching a game without our stars this season feels different or maybe because we're finding ways to win and I've been fooled.

Either way excited for today! Keep the streak alive!

Right!  At this point, I'm just guessing it may be Smart because he was the one to start the second half when Kyrie went out.   For all I know, Face Mask Kyrie could start.  Or, Rozier, or Larkin.  Or maybe even Theis... Brad does think outside of the box (Maybe not that far outside the box though I hope)

I think the streak ends tonight but I'm hoping to see that same fight from this team.

Hopefully the Godfather (Horford)  is back for this game. Could use the veteran presence with Irving out today.

Also hoping JB busts out of his recent slump. They need to get him going early. He seems to go based off confidence and I feel like sometimes if he misses early, it kind of messes with him. He also has a rough task ofnguarding Derozan tonight.

The fact that Brad put Smart in to finish the last game just baffles me. Larkin comes in and shows out evertime, even rozier does his thing from time to time. I just can't see anything good happening starting Smart...ever...his offense is just so frustrating and this blog HIGHLY overrated his passing ability.

Big test today for Jaylen to see how well he can defend DeRozan.  Cmon Jaylen lay some serious D on him, and it will help us get to 12 in a row.

No Kyrie today, but Al is back. Smart, Brown, Tatum, Al, and Baynes starting. That's a pretty tough defensive lineup, and having Al back should really help our offensive flow.

Toronto has a top-4 offensive efficiency, so we'll see just how sound our defense is today.

I like that Brad is using Baynes and Morris interchangeably in the starting lineup, depending on match-up. I also like that both players seem to have bought into Brad's plan and are playing their role well.

Still very early, but Derozan is having a lot of trouble getting loose from Jaylen.

He doesn't have a size advantage....

Yeah, I noticed that, too. That extra size and length is throwing him off.

Derozan was always our biggest problem with Toronto. We just had nobody with the size to guard him. Brown looks to be a solid answer to that problem so far.

They're shooting lights out from 3 but fortunately they're turning the ball over.  Our defense is really good.  They'll start missing sooner or later.

I unsubscribed from their service. They have crappy streams and ads and bad buffering. I've had much better luck going to reddit nbastreams and clicking links. Higher quality streams. Sometimes it's tough finding a Celtics based broadcast, but usually that's not a problem.

I cant believe the Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.ty service of League Pass.

Two things:

Celtics length and quickness wreaks havoc on teams.

Tatum still has a bad habit that he showed at Duke:  he receives the ball and then stops while he reads the defense.  It allows the defense to set and wastes valuable seconds.  He's a willing passer once he gets moving, so he's not a ball-stopper in the Melo sense, but it's something to watch as he develops.

But the game is within a point, so all he really needs to do is in the last minute get a critical steal, then rebound and hit a three and he's the hero. Give him a huge contract.

Rozier can do what he does for less money.

Defense has kept this from getting out of hand but unless the ball movement gets going it's a loss. No Kyrie to close the gap otherwise.

Brown might lead the league in missed dunks this year.

He takes off too far from the rim.  He's a great athlete, but he can't stretch, lol.
He might take of from wherever he wants, but someone must pull him aside and tell him that layups count for 2 as well.

well, celtics shot pretty poorly, missing so many open shots and a number of lay ups. only down by 5 with plenty of time left.

they are still in this. one good quarter or hot streak and they get the lead for good. looking forward to the second half.

the defense is all right so far. toronto just making contested shots so far. credit to them.

This is a really typical Marcus Smart game. Their guards are crushing ours. No real defense to speak of. Also he's doing nothing notable on offense. The front court is doing all the work.

But the game is within a point, so all he really needs to do is in the last minute get a critical steal, then rebound and hit a three and he's the hero. Give him a huge contract.

Rozier can do what he does for less money.
Are you even watching?

This is a very big eye roll inducer lol. Stop being ridiculous

Yeah, I actually liked the way Smart played. He didn't force his shots and trusted the offense. It seems like he needs to be more careful in the lane, and it definitely seems like the Celtics have to space the floor better, but he ran a good offense while he was in there.

right on smart's shot selection tonight. instead of chucking up poor 3s he is driving to the basket. now if he can learn to make layups, he is good to go!  ;D

Stuck at work so I can't watch the game. So, #1, thanks to everyone here for letting me experience the game a little. #2, I watched the highlight of Horford dunking and I thought it was interesting that Ibaka wanted no part of it.

This is a guy who led the league in blocked shots twice but he did want to step away from Aron Baynes to contest Horford at the rim. Is Ibaka just not giving the effort like he used to or was he afraid of leaving Baynes or what? Seemed strange to me.

This is also another game where Al needs to take a more proactive role offensively, especially with Kyrie out. 4-4 at the moment, which is too few attempts for him in this context.

He will make faster reads as he develops.

He does have a deliberate game, but some times it's better to make good plays slowly than bad plays quickly.  Guys like Rozier could benefit from being a little more deliberate sometimes.

Hopefully as Tatum gets more experience he'll make good plays quickly, as you point out.

This team is just refreshing...

Even with Hayward out... We never stopped fighting...

Even when Horford was out, Irving and the team still faced and fended off adversity.

Now with Irving once again out, our team is NOT afraid. They still seem to focus, buckle down, and see the objective in plain sight. This team is playing like they know what's at stake... And that kind of team is almost impossible to beat without giving it your all.

He always seems to know when to disrupt the rhythm of an game, and turn back that momentum.

I'd say we establish Morris in the post at least a few times with this unit.  We just don't have many great offensive options.

Stupid play by Rozier.

Love the Theis pickup.  Very good defender and fundamental rebounder.  An asset on the court if you surround him with scorers.
And again

This is a really typical Marcus Smart game. Their guards are crushing ours. No real defense to speak of. Also he's doing nothing notable on offense. The front court is doing all the work.

But the game is within a point, so all he really needs to do is in the last minute get a critical steal, then rebound and hit a three and he's the hero. Give him a huge contract.

Rozier can do what he does for less money.

Glad we got the win, it would have been outrageous to lose on that bogus offensive foul on Tatum. It's crazy how poised he looks for a rookie in crunch time, I feel like he is going to score every time he drives to the basket and gets by his defender while extending his long arms to the basket !

Great win without Kyrie, it would be nice to secure an easy one against Brooklyn and then put the streak on the line against the Warriors.

The Jay's are really impressive..a slight bone head play by Jayson but still it was a flop there by that toronto pmayer.

On a related note, that was totally an offensive foul on Tatum. You just aren't allowed to swing your elbows like that. I don't think it was a flagrant, but I remember a couple of similar situations last year where I believe that was the call.

Really happy to get the win and Tatum played great, overall - just some learning to do in the process on his path to the HOF.

But the game is within a point, so all he really needs to do is in the last minute get a critical steal, then rebound and hit a three and he's the hero. Give him a huge contract.

Rozier can do what he does for less money.

Ignorant. You just simply have no idea what you're talking about, do you? Marcus and Brown have both played excellent defense, yet Lowry is hitting ridiculous shots from way downtown despite their good D. But that's somehow their fault, huh?
Let me get this straight. Lowry is making ridiculous shots. Therefore Marcus is playing great defense. That's a very interesting theory. I call it the Marcus-can-do-no-wrong Theory.

That's a non-sequitor. Lowry was hitting ridiculous shots. The fact that he had to take ridiculous shots is good team defense.

Smart ended the game with 14, 9, 5, and 2, with 2 TOs, and a +11 net rating.
Lowry ended the game with 19, 7, 2, and 1, with 3 TOs, and a -4 net rating.

You'd be hard-pressed to argue that Smart was "crushed."

Edit: for that matter ...

Brown ended with 18, 3, 3, and 2 on a +6 rating.
DeRozan ended with 24, 3, 4, and 0 on a -4 rating.

How'd Rozier do?  Pretty good right? Did you notice that nice 4 point play at the end of the half to keep the game way closer and grab some momentum?

So why should Smart be paid so much more than Rozier?

Rozier can do what Smart can do and for way less money.  And without generally crippling the offense.

Btw......those stat lines.  Why don't you add the shooting numbers so people can see that too?

Smart forced Lowry into several difficult shots.  That's good defense.

Lowry made several difficult shots.  That's good shotmaking.

Both statements can be true.  The fact that Lowry made some shots doesn't mean there's "no real defense to speak of."  You've just decided that you don't like Smart, and you're going to an extreme to try to argue the point.

For the record, I'm not the biggest Smart fan on this board either.  But you do have to look at the whole picture.  You alertly point out all of the negatives while sticking your head in the sand when he does something well.

Their backcourt of DeRozan, Lowry, and Powell were a combined:

17-40 (43%) with 48 points, 15 assists, 14 rebounds, 5 steals, 0 blocks, and 5 TOs.

Again, what I'm saying is that your bias against Smart is showing. He played well tonight against an All-star point guard and matched him at most turns. That's impressive.

Marcus Smart is this generations DJ
Great defense, good passing, great team player, offense fair until game is on the line

Intangibles

That is a great comp.   Of course, Marcus has a long way to go to make this a career comp, but defensively he's already more intense and stronger, and offensively he has some of the traits that made DJ a great complimentary offensive player.   DJ couldn't shoot the 3 (and therefore didn't), but he drove he ball well, had great BBIQ, and he was clutch.  Marcus has shown evidence of a clutch gene, he has a decent handle and can see the court -- passes well if not sometimes a little out of control.   Like DJ he is a good rebounder at guard and like DJ he is a "sort of" point guard.  Neither are prototypical PGs -- more defensive minded combo guards with average (DJ) and below average (MS) shooting skills.

Larry Bird said DJ was the best player he played with.  I don't think Marcus is destined for such praise by a legend, but I would bet that most guys he plays with are glad to hae him on the court with them -- though I also bet they cringe when the 3 flies.

Looks like another great game from our back-up PGs -- Smart and Rozier, with another healthy dose of Brown carrying the offense.  I'm starting to wonder if there's any drop off between our starting PG play and this incredible bench production.

Was it normal and OK with the team players/coaches/Danny/Owners that Irving did not attend the game today ?? I know there was something about seeing a doc for a protective mask, but that could have been done yesterday.

Holy Cow!!!!!! 12

Brown with good D.  Tatum keeps it alive  and Smart snares it.

TP for that observation.

Tatum saved that game.

That 'bound was destined for Ibaka for an easy two and/or a foul.

Tatum scrapping kept it from Ibaka and gave Marcus a chance to grab it.

Couldn't see that clearly from some angles, but that is what happened.

Great win!!!!!

Their backcourt of DeRozan, Lowry, and Powell were a combined:

15-35 (43%) with 49 points, 12 assists, 6 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block, and 7 TOs

Smart, Brown, and Rozier were a combined:

17-40 (43%) with 48 points, 15 assists, 14 rebounds, 5 steals, 0 blocks, and 5 TOs.

Our backup backcourt was just crushed by the star-ridden backcourt in Toronto.
Smart single handedly kept those shooting numbers down.  Per usual.

It's not that Smart is bad or that he's bad all the time. It's that Rozier can do what he does and for less money

12 in a row  8)

Glad we got the win, it would have been outrageous to lose on that bogus offensive foul on Tatum. It's crazy how poised he looks for a rookie in crunch time, I feel like he is going to score every time he drives to the basket and gets by his defender while extending his long arms to the basket !

Great win without Kyrie, it would be nice to secure an easy one against Brooklyn and then put the streak on the line against the Warriors.
Tatum's finger roll is straight out of the 70s highlight films
Just the stuff that ain't done anymore.
Im proud of this team

GEORGE ICEMAN GERVIN finger roll and shooting abilities.

For anyone who thinks Rozier is in the same hemisphere as Smart defensively, I'd like to submit the Hawks playoff series where Smart shut down Milsap when nobody else on the team could.  Big or small.

Why on earth was Smart taking that last shot...it should be Tatum.

The play was an option off of Smart in the post after some dribble handoffs at the 3 point line.  He took a bad shot - he needs to not fade away and learn a few Derozan pump fakes - but that play is usually very good offense.

He could have backed him down more but whatever.

Anyone else watching the postgame coverage see the list in the C's locker room titled "We WILL" that starts with sprinting to defensive sets? Has the whole thing been written about here or in any article?

Haven't heard about it, but would like to.

It was behind Tatum in his postgame interview. It wasn't written in marker on a whiteboard, it was printed by a printer pro. It had several items. The third was "Be TOUGH with the ball". I wish I had DVR so I could rewind and pause.

He's suuuuppppppoooooosssssseeedddd to do things well! He's supposed to do a lot of things well!   I don't understand why we give him the participation trophy and not Rozier.  I've never said he doesn't do anything well.

Raptors are legit, their young players can play and they seem deeper than last year.

The real question is can they get Lowry going consistently with their new offensive system and run something other than DeRozen iso's if they are against a tough D in crunch time.

Found a mention of the locker room sign.

http://www.espn.com/boston/nba/story/_/id/11798684/brad-stevens-boston-celtics-sign-grit-effort-teamwork

Quote
WE WILL

(1) Sprint to set OUR defense.

(2) Execute OUR defense with multiple efforts to completion.

(3) Be TOUGH with the ball.

(4) Play unselfishly with pace and space to get great shots.

(5) Dominate effort plays.

I do.

They have the 2 MVPs, the two greatest shooters in league history, and one of the 2 or three best defensive players in the league.

They have averaged 67 wins a season for the past 3 years and just had the greatest postseason ever, going 16-1 and making a mockery of the rest of the league.

This season, Tatum has a better TS% on the 3pt% leaderboard than Klay Thompson. Irving is a good match against curry. Curry isn’t the best defender. I also want to see smart and Irving stop curry and Durant should have fits from Tatum. I am interested in seeing what Baynes / Morris / Brown  and maybe even Semi can do against draymond. They have no answer for Horford, I can see McGee having trouble keeping up with him.

The warriors lost 3 times already, more than us. They’ve been beat before and will be beat by teams like ours.

TP. This is complete nonsense. I thought the Celtics were the better team the whole game. Shots just weren't falling. In fact I was surprised that it remained so close till the end. After the 8-point lead in the 3rd I expected that we would run away and never look back, but then Miles shot two 3-pointers and the bench again struggled to score. Well deserved win imo.

I ain't scared. But this is a good measuring stick. It would be hard to beat them even with hayward. but, one step at a time. Right now let's finally beat lebron and the cavs and win the east to just make the finals. progress. Hopefully GS blows the team up or has inside issues with money etc to open the door for us sooner than expected.  We cannot win it all until we get there. Let's get there first and foremost.
