Looks like Nesmith is right on track to go through the normal roller coaster of CS hype and despair. This usually culminates in the player (a) dropping 25 in one of the last games of his rookie year when no one is playing defense, (b) lighting up summer league, and then (c) spraining an ankle on the first day of training camp in his second season and then barely getting playing time for the first two months of the season.

On a more serious note: he's going to have to start releasing the ball quicker if he wants to be a legit offensive threat.

Because of his good size and massive wingspan, I'm not too worried about his shot release speed. He's not Kemba out there trying to outquick guys. Sure it always helps to have a fast shot, but he doesn't seem to fazed by guys running at him and he also has a nice side step to open up space that he's clearly worked on. At this point, it is just going to take a lot of reps to keep getting him up to speed in the NBA game, but getting his shot off should be one of the least of our concerns.

So he's about 6' 6" and what is his wingspan?  Thanks.

6'9

I read 6'10".  Was that official measurements?

Stepien did a report about his potential as a really good defender when he was at Vandy:

Wow, that article puts him in elite company based on his attributes.

I need to be pinched because him turning into pretty much any of those prospect comps would be a coup.

It's an easy comp to make being a Cs fan, but even if Nesmith never improves, his level of engagement throughout the game (on both ends) is light years beyond Young. Last night showed some positive signs for Nesmith's development. He certainly has all of the measurables and the right attitude; let's just hope that continues to translate to the NBA game.

TP to footey btw for posting that Stepien article. Can't wait to see Nesmith turn into Hayward or Butler  ;)

I found this video which shows how Nesmith’s shooting ability opens things up for other players.

Hah!  Yes, in addition to Young, he’s already separated from a bunch of others.  Looking at first rounders whose career trajectory is set: RJ Hunter, Yabu, Fab, Giddens.   It’s time to start looking at Avery, Sully, Gerald Green, Rozier, Langford... to see if he’ll be comparable to or exceed them as time passes.

He’s looking like he belongs on a nightly basis which I guess at this point is a pretty big plus. Others never looked like they belonged.

I like his hustle and effort. This puts him light years ahead of lost in the lights Young &Hunter.

He definitely needs to work on his on ball defense. Few times his guy got by him on the first step. He turns his body and Oh-lays the ball handler.
ok fine

He's growing quickly. His athleticism, length, shot, and defense are apparent. I could see him being considered the steal of the draft 2 years from now.

If Nesmith can become a solid bench player and Romeo gets healthy, that pushes frustrating guys like Semi, Grant Williams, Carsen, and Green down or out of the rotation. That can only be a good thing.

I think we need to run more plays for him.  Run him off screens, etc.  He’s got too much talent to be used like Semi.
