UNDISPUTED: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIjHqCvykxI

THE HERD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubLIgxTknmw

(I'm pretty sure he also went on First Things First this morning but I can't find that video anymore)

Anyways, he went on those shows and talked many things (Luke Walton, Lebron, Lakers, OKC, Celtics, Kyrie, etc.), but when it came to debating a lot of the folks arguing that the C's are "way better without Kyrie", he hammered them with facts and logic

I thought two points really stuck out from Scal and I agreed with them.

1. When things go sideways and your on a cold stretch, you absolutely need a Kyrie to stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, we saw this happen in the 2nd half of the Clippers game where we're up 20+, but Kyrie leaves, Clips go on a run we can't stop and they come back to win. And welp, that Game 7 last year. Couldn't hit anything when we could have easily pulled away and we brutally missed Kyrie in that moment. Scal mentioned that guys like Tim Duncan, Lebron James, etc. over the years were guys who could stop runs and shift momentum, but he also feels Kyrie can do that too especially in the playoffs, and he referenced how even in those Cavaliers playoff runs, there were many moments where Kyrie actually saved the Cavaliers in a few games by giving them back momentum when it looked lost.

2. We're 7-0 against non-playoff teams, 2-2 against playoff teams w/o Kyrie. This is the common misconception, and in general most of our wins without Kyrie in the past 1.5 seasons were at home but we struggled mightily without him on the road. In last year's playoffs, we were 10-1 at home but 1-7 on the road. We need a healthy Kyrie for the playoffs if we want a chance at making the Finals, period.

So if you guys are free/bored, you can check out these vids!  ;D

Gotta get that guy serious minutes. He could be the Jordan Mickey of PG's for us.

This year, Boston is 4-2 against playoff teams without Kyrie including winning the last 4 such games (the were 6-6 in the regular season last year).  Now granted Brooklyn, Charlotte, and Detroit aren't exactly a whose who of playoff teams and that is 4 of those games (the others were the loss at Utah and the win at Philly).
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

We already saw what the Celtics are without Kyrie in the playoffs.

I think all of these questions will be answered once we see Kyrie play for the Celtics in the playoffs.

This will be the first season where Kyrie plays in the playoffs without Lebron James.

Two years ago the Bulls almost upset the Celts in the playoffs.

What our record without Kyrie, in the regular season, is irrelevant because the playoffs is different story.

Good for Scal.

I HATE the hosts on First Things First.

There's this little know it all nerd named Nick Wright and he literally has his lips firmly planted on Lebron's ass

Can't stand him or Chris Carter.

Good showings by Scal for sure.  Colin Cowherd is such a tool, saying Scal is anti-analytics because he didn’t agree with his data.  That infamous “Celtics are 9-2 without Kyrie” when they’re just 2-2 vs playoff teams in that group of games.  Scal calls that out so that makes him anti-analytics, “as close as it comes”.  Really?  I just don’t understand these people on ESPN, they must be getting told to blatantly disagree and cause conflict because that makes no sense.

Nick Wright is unbearable, as is Cris Carter. Carter's inability to let a guest speak for more than 2 seconds before interrupting is so lame.

Most talking heads suck though.

Yeah both Carter and Wright suck.

Also wanted to mention to the OP, I did watch Scal on The Herd. I'll admit that I find Cowherd pretty entertaining (even though I don't always agree with him.) Scal took him to task and did a very good job of it. Him and Cowherd had a very entertaining back and forth. Thanks for posting.

I didn't bother with Undisputed because there's just way too many people on that show and they all talk over each other.

The "Celtics are a better team without Kyrie" narrative gets pushed whenever we win a game without Kyrie. Not to take away from the great effort by the players to cover for Kyrie's absence as they have done an outstanding job, but let's look at the games we've played without Kyrie this year:

Code: [Select]
Date Opp Result Score Opp current record
Nov. 9, 2018 @ UTH L 123-115 32-25
Dec. 10, 2018 NOP W 113-100 25-33*
Jan. 2, 2019 MIN W 115-102 27-30*
Jan. 4, 2019 DAL W 114-93 26-31*
Jan. 14, 2019 @ BKN L 109-102 30-29
Jan. 23, 2019 CLE W 123-103 12-46*
Jan. 28, 2019 BKN W 112-104 30-29
Jan. 30, 2019 CHA W 126-94 27-29*
Feb. 5, 2019 @ CLE W 103-96 12-46*
Feb. 12, 2019 @ PHI W 112-109 37-21
Feb. 13, 2019 DET W 118-110 26-30*

*teams below .500

7 teams below .500, and 2 games against a team that's just 1 game above it. These are teams we SHOULD be beating, with or without Kyrie. The times when we need Kyrie will be playoff time, where the East is much stronger this year than last year. All our major competitors (except Indiana) got better. We need Kyrie because he can go get us a bucket when we desperately need one.

The other piece of it is that the depth we have affects everyone's performance. Everyone will look better in games that Kyrie isn't playing in because when he is playing, everyone - including Kyrie himself - has to play smaller roles than they otherwise should. So when you take someone out everyone looks better because they have more touches, more minutes, more chances to impact the game.

All that being said, I think there's an argument to be made that when Kyrie is playing, the others don't play to their capabilities, whether that's due to them deferring too much or getting too little touches I don't know. But here are the stats for players PPG/efficiency with/without Kyrie (I grabbed these from the Boston Herald):

Code: [Select]
With Kyrie Without Kyrie
Player Min FG% 3FG% PPG Min FG% 3FG% PPG
Hayward 25.7 0.409 0.320 10.0 27.6 0.542 0.381 16.1
Rozier 22.3 0.368 0.349 8.1 28 0.443 0.411 13.3
Brown 25.3 0.442 0.299 11.6 28.4 0.472 0.365 15.5
Smart 26.3 0.386 0.353 7.8 30 0.458 0.375 11.0
Horford 29.6 0.508 0.349 12.5 27.3 0.571 0.478 13.6
Tatum 31.2 0.448 0.381 15.9 32.5 0.473 0.370 18.8
Morris 27.7 0.478 0.417 14.4 27.6 0.467 0.366 15.1

So the 2 players who are impacted the least by Kyrie playing or not playing are Tatum and Morris - both guys who never saw a shot they didn't like. They're not affected by Kyrie being there or not. The others have significant disparities in performance with Kyrie playing. Rather than saying it's Kyrie's fault and getting rid of our best player, maybe they (and Brad) need to figure out what they need to do better when he is there.

did they not just beat Philly without Kyrie?
