I really think Theis is a better all around player than Morris or Baynes. I would like to see him continue to start for a while.

What do you guys think?

Experience is first. Stevens will ride Baynes and Monroe before Theis partly for that reason.  The other part could be because Theis is undersized and more of a power forward.  The opportunity to play will be garnered via matchups and poor play from veterans.  He will get his shot in future seasons as long as he consistently plays like this in his career.

I do like the opportunity Baynes' injury has presented to Theis.  It should be a foreshadow to a bigger role in subsequent seasons.

Monroe is a poor defender. and Baynes is a poor offensive player.
Theis is more well rounded.

This is it right here. The game has finally evolved to the point that specialists are having trouble finding spots.

The recent comments about the necessity to reshape the Clips away from specialists and toward more broadly skilled players was on point. Theis is a good role player because of his versatility (and length). Great find by the C's scouts right there.

He's statistically our 5th best player, so it's long overdue.

I assume the move was made due to our defensive problems, because by all standards Theis is defensively "elite."

Care to share your reasoning for him being our "5th best" player?

Agree with OP. Theis should start.

Care to share your reasoning for him being our "5th best" player?

He's got the 5th best advanced analytics after Kyrie, Horford, Tatum, and Rozier (in that order).

The reason for this is because he's defensively elite without being a large burden on offense. He's easily a top 20 defensive player both on paper and visually, boasting a Defensive Box Plus Minus (DBPM) of 3.2. That's better than Kahwi and Draymond Green, to put into perspective.

Now, I'm not saying he's a better defender than those two, because let's be honest, stats don't tell the entire story. But he's at least in the ballpark of two great defenders and consistent NBA all first team players. I'm also not saying that he has more value than Jaylen Brown. I'm simply saying that if you measure our team right now, he is playing better than Brown, Baynes, and anyone else not mentioned earlier.

He's also a rookie. Danny really knocked it out of the park on this guy. I'd wrap him up on a long term contract ASAP. Oh, he's also ranked 84th in VORP... as a rookie... VORP is my favorite algorithm to model player production, because it weighs their contribution against the percentage of minutes played. Even though it's unfair to the player, it gives you a good idea of their exact contribution to the games, because someone playing fantastic for 48 minutes is more impressive than someone playing fantastic for 15. For someone to be ranked 84th in VORP and only play 30% of the game (15 minutes), it's pretty impressive.

I'm into it, he's been remarkably solid, Baynes has fallen off hard, and Monroe both isn't adjusted to the system yet and is probably going to come off the bench in the end anyway.

In the long run, if we expect anything out of Baynes and value giving Horford more minutes at 4 than 5, we'll need to adjust. But for now he's earned it and it's worth a look for Brad as we start thinking about playoff lineups.

for a rookie that almost no one heard of before October I think Theis is a great find. Not sure how I feel about the state of our front court that he needs to start though. Great rotation player but does some of that shine diminish if he's not coming off the bench but playing against starting 5s?

I guess time will tell. Theis Theis Baby!
ok fine

Theis might be a rookie but he's 25. It's not like he's your average 19-year-old college freshman one year removed from hitting the AAU circuit.

Daniel Theis leads in the following NBA categories per Fongos on YouTube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OAqUnq6hqI

I believe he has gotten more minutes as a Celtic than any other basketball player from Salzgitter, Germany.

He is the first "masked player" to hit two 3 point shots in a row. (Against Cav's)

Theis has the highest 3 pt % of any German NBA player who is 6'8".

In his last 14 games, he's 9 for 19 from three which, my friends is boffo. It means he hits a three in almost every other game he plays in.

Obviously, he is my sleeper candidate for ROY. Granted, he will need to average 38 minutes per game and probably win the NBA title this year while hitting what? 47% from three to get a fair shake in the voting, but, I like his chances.

BTW, in all seriousness (even though it's February in Boston) I think Theis has a slightly better game than Baynes. The starters seem to move better with him on the floor and I am old so I remember another 6'9" power forward who played center for the Celtics and made up for size with smahts and grit and desiah.
