Title: Concert Discussion
Post by: slamtheking on August 21, 2018, 11:28:11 AM
Had a good run with the Driving Tunes thread last month trying to find a good summer topic.  Trying again with a thread on concerts people have attended.

What's the first concert you attended?
What's the best/favorite concert you attended?
What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most?
What's the last concert you went to?
What's the worst concert you went to?
What concert was better than you expected?
What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)?

Feel free to add more discussion items -- I'm sure I missed several worth mentioning.

My info:
--What's the first concert you attended?  Cheap Trick -- All Shook Up tour
--What's the best/favorite concert you attended?    J Geils Band - last Christmas concert in Providence before Peter Wolf left the band.   1982
--What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most?  AC/DC
--What's the last concert you went to?  AC/DC --> last tour they'll likely do with Brian Johnson
--What's the worst concert you went to?  Tough call.  The Cheap Trick concert focussed on their All Shook Album which was the beginning of their downfall in popularity.  Aerosmith in the early 80's after Joe Perry left and Steve Tyler was barely coherent (also couldn't see the stage due to being way back on the floor and being short)
--What concert was better than you expected?  John Fogerty.  Music was everything I had hoped for and was surprised at how good a musician he was.
--What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)?
Stevie Ray Vaughn, Alice in Chains (with Lane Staley), AC/DC (with Brian Johnson and Malcolm Young), The Black Crowes (breakup),  Yes (with Chris Squire - only member who stayed the whole run),  J Giels (break up and death of J Geils), Pink Floyd (death of Richard Wright).

hope to get a good session of reminiscing while waiting for the Celtics season to get underway.

What's the first concert you attended? Jimmy Buffett at Great Woods mid to late 90s.
What's the best/favorite concert you attended? Arcade Fire/The National at UIC in 2010, LCD Soundsystem at Lolla '16.
What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most? Arcade Fire (I think)
What's the last concert you went to? Lollapalooza 2018 (all 4 days)
What's the worst concert you went to? MGMT at The Riv (Chicago) this past winter/spring
What concert was better than you expected? Paul McCartney, Two Door Cinema Club, Muse
What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)? The Who (saw when Entwhistle was still alive), AC/DC (saw at New Garden in '09)

A lot of this is thinking at the top of my head.  I'm sure I'm overlooking a bunch of stuff.

envious of you getting to see the Who with Entwhistle.  inspired me to want to be a bass player (never became one but he and Jack Bruce showed me bass players could be great musicians as well).  TP

First concert was Rush during the Motion Pictures tour in I think 1981.

Best concert was probably Bruce Springstein at the Centrum in 1988 where he forgot the words to "Born to Run". Thankfully we in the audience didn't and we sang it until he remembered them.

Been to more AC/DC concerts than any other band, which more than likely is responsible for my current lack of hearing. Lol.

Lack concert I went to was Green Day in Providence back in the late 90's. I think Green Day's next tour after that was American Idiot tour, which I missed and that sucks.

It's not the worst concert I ever went to but it might have been the funniest. I saw Billy Idol at Foxwoods and he was drunk or on something. He twice tripped over a stage speaker while singing a song. After the second trip, in the middle of "White Wedding", he decided to finish the song lying down on the stage.

I went to J Giels Band concert during the Freeze Frame tour. I don't think they will ever get together again as John Giels died.

90's is a long way back for your last show Nick.  seems like you get the shows that if anything goes wrong you're there for it.

hoping I'm wrong but I think Rush may be out of the touring business due to Neil Peart's health.  was glad I got to see them.

What's the first concert you attended? I don't remember :D

What's the best/favorite concert you attended & What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)? Page & Plant  for the Wanting into Clarksdale tour.

What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most? Depeche mode or  Vassilikos (greek singer-songwriter , mainly in English, he did an intersting lp with covers called Vintage a few years ago)

What's the last concert you went to? Parov Stellar.

What's the worst concert you went to? The worst was Morrissey a couple of years ago. Love his music but the live was awful. He lookd bored , the set was just over an hour.... I spent more time going to the venue.

What concert was better than you expected? An acoustic set from Puressence just before the split.

Not big on concerts. Most of these are things I sneaked in for free as teenager.

What's the first concert you attended?

Rockwave  12 July, 1999 (Manowar, traumatic experience, joined for the sake of a friend friend)
Luckily on the next day they had Blur and Placebo

What's the best/favorite concert you attended?

REM , but my experience is so limited it doesnt count for much.

What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most?

-/-

What's the last concert you went to?

Bach music for organ and still that was a long time ago.

What's the worst concert you went to?

Easy one. Manowar

What concert was better than you expected?

Stary Olsa (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stary_Olsa). Minsk, prolly 2007. I expected it to be terrible tbh, it was more like mediocre.

Speaking of which, in Coventry they have a pub where amateur musicians gather once a week and play music. The atmosphere was amazing.

What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)?

-/-

A friend got me to go.... At the time i wasn't much of a fan. I was more into house and electronic sounds. But watching  Plant was a eyeopening experience. He was so theatrical .. He filled the scene without moving ... i Truly unbelievable  (to honor my music roots after the concert went to a faithless live which made the day unforgettable)

those shows you go to because someone dragged you or talked you into it can be some of the best ones when they're better than expected.

Oh, I have seen a ton of local bands at bars and such, so I have gotten my fill of music. In St. Pete Beach in Florida I frequented a tiki bar right on the beach that had bands playing every day and night. Heard and danced to a ton of cover bands there. But that's not really a concert. I stopped going to concerts because fatherhood of three boys made life after work impossible to get free time. 60 hours a week at work, soccer games, baseball games and football games plus all the practices made me too freaking tired to think about concerts.

Cool thread - tp to the op!

What's the first concert you attended? NKOTB - Magic Summer 1990 at Foxborough
What's the best/favorite concert you attended? Bad Religion - 1998 Middle East Cambridge
What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most? Bad Religion (fave band)
What's the last concert you went to? Final Warped Tour - 8/3/18 Orlando (Pennywise, New Found Glory, Less than Jake, Simple Plan, Reel Big Fish)
What's the worst concert you went to? The Monsters and The Ghosks at the Elvis Room in Portsmouth, NH - 1999
What concert was better than you expected? Herman's Hermits last year at Epcot
What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)? No Use For a Name - a bunch of times - RIP Tony Sly
Next Concert? Alkaline Trio this coming Sunday - HOB Orlando

[Reputable] punk shows are the best shows. They are generally at small enough venues where you can still slam dance (no real seating), but not be worried about going home with a black eye or missing teeth.

yeah, kids can put a real crimp into free time.

my wife works early hours and is typically out cold by 8:00 pm.  went to the Black Crowes on a Friday or Saturday and she passed out cold by the second or third song.

following up on your take on "not really a concert", I went to a George Carlin show which would qualify as my worst concert if that was considered.  Right off the bat he tells the audience he's not doing anything new, just rehashing bits from 2 old HBO specials.   Considering what he charged, that was complete BS.  (would also fit in my 'will never see perform again' section).

May 28, 2000. The HFStival in Washington, DC. Bands: Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, Third Eye Blind, Cypress Hill, Godsmack, Filter, Deftones, Staind, Bloodhound Gang, Vertical Horizon, Sev.

What's the best/favorite concert you attended?

(see former comment)

I grew up on HFStivals. Good Charlotte, Jimmy's Chicken Shack, and Our Lady Peace played lots of them

What's the last concert you went to?

Pixies.

What concert was better than you expected?

Alabama; it is the 2nd best concert I've ever seen. Better than Ezra and Barenaked Ladies. Louis CK.

What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)?

I had tickets to a Soundgarden show that I never got to see.

What's the first concert you attended?
An All Star Rap Show featuring LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kane, and others in Providence, RI (1989). My friend and I were 14 at the time, and everyone was searched twice for weapons before entering. I remember sitting down and there plenty of open seats as people were still arriving. There was one guy in our row, but he was about 8 seats away. All of a sudden, a gang walks up in the same aisle and the one behind, and beats the crap out of the guy. We had a blast, but couldn't wait to get home in one piece.

What's the best/favorite concert you attended?
U2 at Gillette Stadium

What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most?
Tie between U2, Coldplay and Dave Matthews Band

What's the last concert you went to?
Coldplay at Gillette Stadium

What's the worst concert you went to?
I went to a Rolling Stones concert with the wrong person. He was a huge fan and he wanted to split a bottle of Jack Daniels before the concert. I missed the first few songs of their set because I was in the bathroom getting sick from drinking too much. The Stones were great, but I was too incoherent and intoxicated to enjoy it.

What concert was better than you expected?
The first time I saw Coldplay in concert, at the TD Garden.

What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)?
Rage Against the Machine (Saw them at Great Woods along with Wu-Tang Clan. One of those two groups was late because of a plane delay, so the concert didn’t start until they showed up. I think the show was delayed for around 2 hours or so.)

Last concert: Radiohead - awesome. Also saw Courtney Barnett who was great.

Next up is David Byrne  :D

Best concert: either Ray LaMontagne during his Ourobouros Tour or Brian Wilson performing all of his Pet Sounds album + most of his hits. Just two incredible shows, watching Brian Wilson perform was incredibly moving, though he didn't look in good health he gave it his all, and his band is fantastic.

A Perfect Circle, Radiohead, and Bob Dylan (despite his ruined voice) deserve honorable mentions. Edit: Joan Baez was great too. Edit edit: Dave Matthew Band was awesome. Great vibes.

Worst concert: probably the Fleet Foxes at Thompson's Point in Portland - coincidentally the same venue I saw Ray LaMontagne perform Ourobouros. The sound quality was pathetic, it's like the guy mixing it was drunk or something. We actually got as far from the stage as we could and that wa the only place it was tolerable. Sadly a lot of shows are like this. Just horrible mixing. Ray Lamontagne was mixed perfectly at the same venue, however.

Edit: The Red Hot Chili Peppers and George Thorogood were pretty disappointing too. Especially George, I thought his simple blues rock would be great live, but the sound was muddy and the band and singing weren't that great, maybe he just had an off night.

First concert: Arlo Guthrie acoustic in Portsmouth NH - I brought a full-blown sound recorder in and recorded the whole thing  :D

Most surprising concert: Ray LaMontagne. My GF loved him, but I was skeptical until the show started. It was intense, focused, his band is incredible. The music was like prime Pink Floyd, with some older, more poppy hits thrown in. But very very tight. And he's a local NH guy, even after getting famous. He's playing the Merrill Auditorium in October. Gonna see him for the third time.

What's the first concert you attended? Oingo Boingo, in 1986.

What's the best/favorite concert you attended?
Erasure 2018, Billy Joel/Elton John mid-90s

What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most? Billy Joel

What's the last concert you went to? Billy Joel, 2018

What's the worst concert you went to? I've put Oingo Boingo out of my mind; Not worst, but most disappointing: Simon and Garfunkel. Simon couldn't have made it any more clear that he didn't want to be there, and the whole thing was just uncomfortable.

What concert was better than you expected? Paul McCartney, Barry Manilow (more on that later)

What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)? Can't think of any.

Hmm, let's see, other interesting moments...

Oh, Barry Manilow. My wife is quite the fanilow and we've seen him four times. His standard line during a concert: "Yeah, I know, you men got dragged along. But trust me, you're gonna be thanking me in the morning. You'll be writing me thank you notes..." We went backstage and met him once. My wife flirted with him, but I got the impression that he's gay. Not sure what it was.

For the person above who mentioned U2, I've seen them. They were good, but just kind of sang there and sang. Not much of a show.

Have seen Erasure twice in Milwaukee, although I've never lived there. It just so happened that they weren't performing in a city that I was in on those tours and, coincidentally, both times, the easiest place to see them was Milwaukee.

You'd think that concerts in Las Vegas would be great, but they've been among my least favorites. They charge you twice as much for the ticket and the artists only play for half the time of a typical concert.

Mike

I grew up on HFStivals. Good Charlotte, Jimmy's Chicken Shack, and Our Lady Peace played lots of them

What's the last concert you went to?

Pixies.

What concert was better than you expected?

Alabama; it is the 2nd best concert I've ever seen. Better than Ezra and Barenaked Ladies. Louis CK.

What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)?

I had tickets to a Soundgarden show that I never got to see.
TP -- that Soundgarden ticket's got to be a heartbreaker :(
Yeah I'm a big Soundgarden fan. Saw them and Nine Inch Nails at xfinity center 3 years ago (can't believe it's been that long). Best concert! So fkn loud!
Last one I saw was Marilyn Manson (with Smashing Pumpkins) at Foxwoods....for free!! As we were leaving halfway through the Pumpkin set there was a couple (smokin hot goth chick) ready to get in. I'll never forget the look on her face when the guy selling tee shirts told them MM already did his set. Poor **** didn't get any that night. Felt kind of bad as the girl was smokin...did I mention that part?
So jealous of the people who saw Page & Plant. Zeppelin is my favorite and I was too young, and still in Russia...lol..the last time they played around here. Wish I could've seen them in 2007 at the O2 Arena.

TP just for having the guts to admit going to a NKOTB show  ;D

admit to never having heard of the rest of them.

To be fair, I was only 10 y/o at the time of the New Kids concert, but I was REALLY into them!  ;D
You shouldn't tell people that, no matter how old you were. Deny, deny, deny.

TPs to all.

Been to 2 Thoroughgood shows -- first was awesome.  second was ok.  not as much energy in his playing at that one.

Old school dude here, so I'd like to blow some of you away with 20th century dates:

First concert: Jethro Tull at New Haven Coliseum in 1974.

Also saw Yes in 1975 in Hartford and Aerosmith with Rick Derringer as warm-up in Boston in 1976.

What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most?
Went to about 8 Grateful Dead shows between 1976-1980 (in college). Also counts for "band that will never perform again".  Also seen Talking Heads/David Byrne 3 times, Peter Gabriel twice and Tower of Power twice.

What's the first concert you attended?

Steve Lawrence and Edie Gormet with my parents at the Monticello in Framingham around 1966

What's the best/favorite concert you attended?

Neil Diamond, Louisville, KY May 1977. I had just graduated from Army basic training at Ft Knox, and we were waiting to finish up admin stuff before we were sent to our advance training sites. Drill Sergeant came in and said that anyone with $2 for bus fare could go to see Diamond. We had been isolated on post in the barracks with no TV, army chow and no fun whatsoever for 2 ½ months. All decked out in our dress greens, loaded onto the army green buses, we were off to Louisville. People wearing civvies. Women. Beer. Normalcy.

We filed in to our balcony seats at one end of the arena behind the stage. We didn't care. We were out in the world, feeling normal. So what if the view sucked.

Suddenly, half way through the show, Neil Diamond stops the show, turns around and squints up into the balcony, saying “Where are my troops?” As the lights hit us, we went nuts. He welcomed us, thanked us for coming, and then played the next 3 numbers to us with his back turned to the paying customers.
I later learned that he was a big supporter of the military (which was not exactly a popular position in the 70's) and he gave free tickets to troops whenever he played near a base.

I never forgot it.

What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most?

Roomful of Blues

What's the last concert you went to?

Ronnie Earl at the Tampa Bay Blues Fest April this year

What concert was better than you expected?

David Bromberg at the Jazz Workshop on Boylston in 1976. He did a full set with his band. We were lingering at our table as the place was closing up. Bromberg came out with a guitar, sat down on a stool and did an unannounced 45 minute solo set for the handful of people remaining. He just felt like playing, and it was unbelievable.

What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)?

BB King and Cab Calloway

What's the first concert you attended?
Nine Inch Nails on the Self Destruct tour at the Boston Garden (opened by the then relatively unknown Marilyn Manson), according to Wikipedia it was on December 3, 1994. It was def cold out since I got called a poser for wearing Boston Celtics winter jacket to a NIN concert.

What's the best/favorite concert you attended?
It's really hard to pick one... Many Pearl Jam concerts. A smaller one that I loved was the Brian Jonestown Massacre opened by a great band called the Asteroid #4 in Central Mass.

What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most?
Pearl Jam by far... 12 times so far.

What's the last concert you went to?
Foo Fighters at Fenway Park

What's the worst concert you went to?
Lenny Kravitz at Great Woods, he canceled his performance after the opening band played because he decided he was too sick to go on at the last minute.

What concert was better than you expected?
Blondie last year... I went to the show to see Garbage open, but Blondie still brings it!

What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)?
Alice in Chains... They're still around but without Layne Staley. But I can't think of any that are broken up.

First concert....Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass with Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 at the DC outdoor Carter Barron Amphitheater, 1966.

Best concert....Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, early 70s at the Celler Door, 200+ max seating.  The horns were amazing.

Worst and one of the best at the same time....an incredible performer named Emitt Rhodes who wrote, sang, and played all the instruments on his albums in the early 70s.  Sounded like Paul McCartney after breaking away from the Beatles.  He had stage fright and had to be ushered on stage by his manager. He then sat at a piano and kept his back  to the audience the whole show.  George Carlin was the opening act and did his thing for more than an hour while we waited for Rhodes to get enough courage to come on stage.

Better than expected...Ricky Nelson!  A young group named America was his opening act...they were great.

Last memorable concert...The Stones.  Doubt I'll ever see them again, lost interest in their sound.

Ironically Southside Johnny was among my worst. A band I was excited to see live, but was mightily disappointed. Lackluster opening for Huey Lewis (who was great) at the Hampton Beach Casino. No energy and out of tune. Just mailed it in. The horns were pale in comparison to Tower of Power, who I had seen the same season at the Casino.

Same band, different day I guess.

Great thread idea.

First- Pat Benatar.
Best- hard to say because different concerts can be great in different ways.  I think I had the most I’ve had at concerts were some Rage Against the Machine shows.  There were incredible mosh pits.  I saw them at Woodstock 99 and it was ridiculous.  I had fun at Iron Maiden, some Aerosmith shows, watched in awe of Jeff Beck a few times.  Audioslave was always fun too.
Worst- Dave Mathews.  I paid over $500 for two tickets then drank too much.  I told my girlfriend to use the navigation to go to “Comcast” then passed out.  I forgot the name had changed to Xfinity Center and when I woke up we were in the wrong city and only got to see the final two songs by the time we arrived at the show.
Last shows- a blues festival with Robert Randolph and others and a festival with Seether, Korn, and Stone Sour.
Next show- Ozzy and Stone Sour in a couple weeks.
Bands I would have seen if I knew what I know now- Nirvana and Alice In Chains.  Would love to have seen Stevie Ray Vaughan too, but I died before I was really going to concerts.  I still haven’t seen the Stones because the tickets are always too expensive to get seats that I’d be happy with.

The first concert I went to was Kansas with Loverboy warming up. Both were excellent as Kansas was still young, around 1980, and Loverboy was just getting started. I still remember Steve Walsh, lead singer for Kansas, doing a handstand on the keyboard while kicking his feet to the beat of Carry on Wayward Son!

BEST CONCERT: This would have to be the Monsters of Rock Tour in 88 at Arrowhead Stadium in K.C. The main bands were Van Halen, The Scorpions, and Metallica. The Scorpions really stole the show from Van Halen. It was a miserably hot day in Arrowhead.

Saw RUSH in Hollywood Florida circa 1985 and loved it!

Best individual show would have to go to a guy named Jason D. Williams at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis circa 1988. This guy was suppose to be Jerry Lee Lewis illegitimate son and he looked a lot like him too. Anyway, it was a small venue and this guy just brought the house down.

Close 2nd place on the best individual performance: Kenny Wayne Shephard in St. Louis downtown with the Arch about 1000 feet behind the outdoor stage. The guy can play the guitar!

Motley Crew at the Sprint Center in K.C. was great too as was Kansas at the Buffalo Run Casino on a very still summer night. Those guys are just so talented and if you ever go to an outdoor concert try to go on a night when there is not much wind. This night was beautiful and not a lot of people were there but Kansas didn't let that slow them down.

What concert was better than you expected?
What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)?

First concert was in 1973. Led Zeppelin

Best concert was probably Elvis Costello and the Attractions in 1979

The last concert I went to was The Pogues, when they reunited a couple of years ago. Great show. It took 4 days for the ringing to stop in my ears. I found out that I have hearing loss and stopped going to live music.

The performer I've seen the most has been Brian Wilson/The Beach Boys probably around 6 times.

I don't think that I"ve been to a bad concert. I saw Bob Dylan with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and was disappointed because the show was at an outdoor stadium.

I saw Roy Orbison a couple of months before he died. I didn't expect very much and what a show he put on. I had tingling up and down my spine when he played "Crying"

Ha all of the bands that I like have broken up or key performers are dead. If I could see one show by one band it would probably be The Byrds.

It was high energy, intense and pure. I didn't know you could cram so many songs into one 90 minute show.

That is a shame about Dave Matthews. I've seen him twice. first time was easily one of the best shows I've seen. Second time was not as magical but still very good.

A TP for your loss
what's really sad is that Moiso died.  thankfully technology is allowing him to communicate from beyond the grave apparently  ;)

TP to Moiso for maintaining a real long-distance dedication to the blog!

I just don't know where to begin to answer that question.  :)

My memory is that they played everything plus covers probably about 30-40 songs.

A great artist and band at the height of their powers. They really delivered the goods before an appreciative crowd.

TP - Kansas sounds like a great band to have seen.  I remember the Monsters of Rock tour when it was going around.  bummed I couldn't get tickets for that.

What's the first concert you attended?
The Police - Synchronisity Tour summer of 1983 in Foxboro.  They were a lot of fun.  A little overwhelming to be in such a huge crowd.  A Flock of Seagulls (snooze) and The Fixx (awesome) warmed up for them..

What's the best/favorite concert you attended?
Pete Townshend - Psychoderelict Tour 1993, Great Woods.  This show still gives me goosebumps.  The Psychodetelict album was very involved with actors, sound effects and a definite beginning and end to a story line.  To that end, the live show had actors on the stage and a video component that were all tied in to the music.  This was the last show of the tour and things were getting very screwed up with the choreography.  Pete was completely aggravated and basically kicked everyone off stage then proceeded to take it out on his guitar.  What an array of sounds he made that night!  He played the craziest rendition of Magic Bus and a bunch of other Who classics until they could get the main show reorganized.

On the20th anniversary of Great Woods the Globe listed it’s top 20 shows for the venue.  This was listed number one.  The man may be twisted, but he is an absolute musical genius.

What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most?
Not much of a repeat concert goer.  I’ve seen a few bands twice: Police (20 something years apart), Los Lobos, Pearl Jam, Ben Harper...)

What's the last concert you went to?
Vapors of Morphine at the Spire Center, Plymouth last winter. Small venues are the way to go.  If you were a fan of Morphine go check these guys out.  Two surviving members, plus a new guitarist/singer.  Baritone sax, drums and guitar.  Low rock.  They’re very polished.  True to the Morphine sound.  They pay a lot of tribute to the late great Mark Sandman and have a bunch of cool original stuff too.

What's the worst concert you went to?
Grateful Dead - Boston Garden 1994/95?. This was their last show at the old Garden.  I’d been the night before and had a great time.  The second night was just brutal.  We couldn’t get to our seats and the music/people just kinda weren’t worth it.  Ended up drinking beers at the Fours before the first set was over.

What concert was better than you expected?
Phish - Campus Club, Providence 1990/91? This one would also fall under the category of “Bands I Saw Before They Made. it Big”.  I was dragged to go see them by a bunch of college friends who had been a bunch of their shows and wouldn’t shut up about them.  We were all completely sober (a rarity for college) and sweating our butts off in a packed dump of a venue. The band had a ton of energy and were completely engaged with the crowd.  My buddies, who saw them many, many times said this was the best show they ever went to by Phish.  I never saw them again.

What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)?
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Northeastern 1989/90?.  Great show.  Stevie had recently sobered up and found God.  He got a little preachy at times, but besides that he was great.

I saw a few people mention J Geils.  I’m going to see Peter Wolf and his current band this Sunday at a small venue in Truro on Cape Cod.  If you’re looking for a fun trip check out the Payomet Centers schedule and come see a show there.  They get some great acts there and it’s a unique venue (on an abandoned Air Force base by Cape Cod National Seashore.

Hey Redz, I know the place, we vacation in Truro every year.  They've had Arlo Guthrie, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, others.  Ever been to the Beachcomber in Wellfleet?  It's a bit of a college crowd, but I saw State Radio there and stood right next to the stage.  My wife was doing photography for the show.

Seen a bunch of fun shows at Payomet.  Los Lobos twice, English Beat, Graham Nash...

and yes, I'm a little past the "Comba" stage of my life, but it's a fun place to see a show.  They get some good acts.  Last time I was there I saw the "Baseball Project" which has a couple of members of REM in it.  They sing songs about baseball, which sounds kinda weird, but they make it work.  There were maybe 30 people in the crowd.  They played a couple of REM tunes at the end.

Also saw the Old 97's there within the last 10 years.

The place darn near fell into the ocean last winter.  It's going to happen sooner or later (probably sooner).

Where do you go in Truro?

Not going to give much details as I like my anonymity, but...

What's the first concert you attended?
Chicago in early 80's - I was a very young kid, don't remember it well and fell asleep..

What's the best/favorite concert you attended?
AC/DC in 2009 - Just amazing, particularly Angus Young rocking hard on a pedestal.

What's the performer/band you've seen in concert the most?
Hmm, I don't think I've seen a concert twice, but would love to see Guns n' Roses again. Sorry, I forgot that I've watched Metallica twice.

What's the last concert you went to?
Phil Collins, did the whole concert sitting down because he had recent back surgery. I cried, still have goosebumps seeing him sing.

What's the worst concert you went to?
Kiss - which surprised me. It was short and lacked energy.

What concert was better than you expected?
Not really a concert per se, as they were part of a group of bands/singers that came over, but I was surprised how much fun I had with Fee Waybill from The Tubes in a the few songs he came out for. Incredible energy for a 67yo, and he looked like he was having a blast.

Also Bret Michaels from Poison was quite fun live as well.

What performer/band did you see that will never perform again (break up or death)?
Hmm, not sure. I have to think on this. Will Phil Collins tour again? Would Duran Duran? AC/DC with all their health issues?

Other than that, I don't think I've seen a band yet that have died.

John Valby!  Good lord that’s a blast from the past.  My brother had a boot leg tape of one of his shows that we wore out.  “Roll Your Leg Over”  ;D

I remember walking into the campus club as a 19 year old kid and thinking “Wow, this is a really poorly designed building.  If there was ever a fire, a lot of people would die.” To get into the place you needed to make your way back and forth down three or four parallel hallways before entering one huge open space.

Within a few years there was the tragic Great White show fire at a similar venue in Providence.

I didn't count Valby as a 'concert' but I've seen him about 6-7 times which would be more than anyone else.

I remember the night of the Station Nightclub fire.  My brother was into Great White and was trying to reach him for about an hour that night to find out if he went.  Pretty tense as you can imagine only to find out he was out but not at that show.   I don't think there was anyone in RI that was more than a step removed from knowing someone in that tragedy.   Knew a coworker that died, another coworker that lost a brother-in-law as well as 2 cousins (through marriage) as well as another coworker who's brother survived but with some serious burns.  truly a tragic night.

I knew a couple that died there and my son's teacher had third degree burns over 75% of his body. I lived in far eastern Coventry at the time and heard the sirens all night. And that video they showed on channel 10 was disgusting and horrifying. You can see the whole video on YouTube.

TP for even getting a ticket for the Synchronicity tour.  those tickets were gone in a flash.

also can't believe anyone else saw a show at the Campus Club.  Saw The Fools opening for John Valby there.

Truly one of the worst ways imaginable to go.

Do you remember what I was talking about with the entrance to the Campus Club?

Stupid Moiso... I wrote that Dave Mathews was my worst concert experience.  I was at the Great White show that was mentioned.  That one would take the cake.

Holy crap.  Really?

Probably best left out of your memories.  Stick with Dave Matthews.

I do - vaguely.  been a long time since I was there but do remember thinking this was a stupidly-designed layout.  figured it had to do with how it was converted from its prior usage.

Yeah, next time there's a big winter storm, the Comba will wash out to sea.

In Truro, we stay at a campground within walking distance of the ocean beach.

Nice.

I made it about halfway through Peter Wolf the other night.  He sounded fine, I just had too much going on in my brain and couldn't really focus on the music.  I was there volunteering for the booth for WOMR, so it was a freebie sho (or I would have stayed).

Stopped at a beach in Wellfleet on the way home.  Watched the waves crashing under a full moon while sitting on a lifeguard chair.  Better for the brain than Peter Wolf!

my condolences on your loss Nick.  the video that was broadcast was pretty graphic and the sounds coming from the people trying to get out was horrific
