I think most of us will agree that our roster is out of balance. Our front court is out of depth, while we have guards who are longing for more minutes or aren't having the impact we could expect. There are certainly options like Poeltl, Holmes or Turner who could be obtained if we really wanted to. I definitely think we should be exploring the market.
When finding a trading partner you need a team that's on the other end (a contender like the Celtics should be talking to non-contenders) or a team that's in disarray. When thinking about disarray you immediately think of the Lakers, but perhaps a little bit underexposed are the Nets. And with all the commotion around Irving, he's actually playing superb as well as Durant, yet they're 1-4.
Now the obvious scapegoat is Simmons. And there you go. His trading value has never been lower, he's still young and he was a DPOY candidate. He can play in the front court, rebound and defend multiple positions. His glaring lack of shooting is less of a problem with a team like the Celtics that's now full with shooters and scorers.
Example:
To Celtics: Simmons
To Nets: Smart, Gallinari, Kornet, Vonleh, Jackson
Getting DPOY Smart is attractive for the Nets.
Trade can be completed at December 14th, when restrictions on trade expire.
The roster spots that become available gives opportunities during the buy-out period.
