Game Notes
The Celtics continue their two game home stand with a visit from the Minnesota Timberwolves.  This is the second and final meeting between these two teams this season.  The Celtics won the first meeting 99-93 in Minnesota on November 21.   The Celtics used a 19-0 run to start the 4th quarter to get the come from behind win.

The Timberwolves did the Celtics a favor by beating the Wizards at home on Monday to move the Celtics back into 2nd place by half a game.  Now, the Celtics have to take their destiny into their own hands and sweep the series from the Wolves to stay in second place.  They split the series last season 1-1 with each team winning on their home court.

Both teams are looking for their second straight win.  The Celtics are 22-9 at home while the Wolves are 10-20 on the road.   In spite of their sub .500 record, the Celtics can't take the Timberwolves for granted as they have been playing very well in recent games.  The Wolves are 7-3 in their last 10 games while the Celtics are just 5-5 in their last 10.

The Celtics are finally healthy with no players on the injured list at this time.  For the Wolves, Zach LaVine is out with a knee injury and Nikola Pekovic is out with an ankle injury.  Adreian Payne missed 13 games with thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) and has received a DNP-CD for the past 4 games.

Standings Reset
The Celtics moved back into 2nd place with the Wizards' loss to these same Timberwolves.  The Celtics are 2.5 games behind the Cavs after a win over Detroit on Tuesday.  The Wizards are .5 games behind the Celtics. The Raptors are 3 games behind Boston.  The Hawks are 5 games behind the Celtics.

Games to Watch

3/15   Mavericks at Wizards

Key Matchups
(http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/jae_crowder.jpg) vs (http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/andrew_wiggins.jpg)
Jae Crowder vs Andrew Wiggins
Andrew Wiggins is playing very well and averaging 23.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists.  Jae needs to stay with Wiggins to keep him from having a big night.  He also needs to hit his shots and
make Wiggins work on the defensive end as well.

(http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/amir_johnson.jpg)  vs  (http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/karl-anthony_towns.jpg)
Amir Johnson vs Karl Anthony Towns
Towns has been very good this season after a year of Kevin Garnett's mentoring.  He is averaging 24.2 points, 12.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks.  Amir will have his hands full trying to slow down the Wolves 7' center who is versatile enough to beat out Isaiah Thomas in the Skills Challenge.  He had 27 points and 18 rebounds in their first meeting and hopefully the Celtics can keep him from having another big game in this one.

Honorable Mention

Al Horford vs Gorgui Deng
Deng had a  big game with 20 points and 10 rebounds the last time these teams met.  It will be very important for the Celtics to limit the Wolves big front line in this game.

Keys to the Game
Defense - The Celtics have been finding their defensive roots in recent games and they need to continue to play tough team defense. The offense feeds off of the defense and if the Celtics can't get stops they struggle on the other end as well.  Now that they are healthy, it's time to once again clamp down on defense.  Defense wins games!!

Rebound - The Celtics must get rebounds to prevent second chance points and fast breaks for the Wolves. Rebounding takes effort and desire and the Celtics have got to show both and crash the boards as a team, especially against the big front line of the Wolves.  The Celtics are 20-2 when they match or out-rebound their opponents.  When they put out the effort on the boards, it also translates to the other parts of their game.

Be Aggressive - The Celtics have to be aggressive in going after loose balls and rebounds and in taking the ball to the basket. They also have to be aggressive on defense. When they are aggressive in going to the hoop good things happen. The Celtics have to play like they are the team that wants it more.  Isaiah recently made the comment that if they aren't the hardest working team they aren't very good.  They simply have to be the team that works hardest.

Set the Pace-
The Celtics must run from the beginning of the game until the final buzzer. Running will allow them to get easy baskets as they get down the court before the defenses set up.  They have to run and they have to move the ball.   When they slow it down, more times than not, they struggle.

Play As a Team - The Celtics have been successful when they move the ball and play unselfishly, making the extra pass to get the best shot.   They  have succeeded by playing as one star and playing hard for each other.    They need play as a team and move the ball and find the open man.  They also have to play as a team on the defensive end and play swarming team defense.

X-Factors
Home Sweet Home
- The Celtics are playing at home for the second straight game. They have played well at home with a 22-9 record at the TD Garden.  As most young teams do, the Wolves struggle somewhat on the road with a 10-20 record.  The Celtics have won 9 of their last 10 at home and have won 10 straight against the Timberwolves at home.   The Celtics need to get a boost from the home crowd and defend their home court.

The Gang's All Here - The Celtics are finally all healthy.  The starters have only played 27 games together so far this season.   The Celtics are 20-7 when the starting 5 is healthy and together.  They need to build on that and get even better.   It is a good time for the Celtics to be healthy as they have 15 games left to get sharper and work together to win games down the stretch going into the playoffs.

Officiating -  Officiating is always an x-factor. Will they let them play or will they call every ticky tack foul?  It's usually to the Celtics' benefit if they let both teams play.  Will they call it fair or will they favor one team over the other? One never knows what any given crew will do. However the game is called, the Celtics need to play through it and not let the officiating distract them.

Celts will be fine.  For better or worse, they probably value their locker room/sense of leadership very high with good reason -- flush with vets having career years and very promising young prospects.

Some of MIN's recent wins have been flukey, and the Wizards seem overrated.  Their frontcourt matches up poorly with MIN, and they've been handed some wins.  Despite Wall, I think our backcourt is better and the defense can handle BealPorter/Bogdanovich/Oubre Jr  if they lock in.

IT's going to have his hands full tonight. Stealing this from a realgm poster who stole it from a T Wolves board...

Quote
From the Twolves board. Hat tip to New Wolves Order.

Rubio has been locking down opposing point guards in 2017

Wall 6-16 37.5%
Curry 10-27 37%
Paul 3-9 33%
Parker/Mills 2-14 combined
Hill 1-3 33%
Irving 10-27 37%
Irving again 5-18 27.8%
Lowry 6-19 31.6%
Conley 5-16 31%
R.Jackson 4-13 31%
Bledsoe 5-18 28%
Westbrook 7-23 30%
Hill 5-12 41.7

Rubio has emerged as the T Wolves' second best player. Wiggins may still have the higher ceiling but Ricky's been looking like Peak Rondo all of 2017

Wolves are starting to play some basket-ball but this is clearly a winable game and a must win if we want to race properly for the best seed we can. Washington will beat Dallas and Cleveland won yesterday.

Go C's ! We can be first !

Our team is not talented enough to loaf or play with no passion and get a win

Team with energy gets the win.

Yeah I think it's because he's not getting his feet set. Trying to get off too quickly and he's more of a a set shooter

Brown is already better on defense.

Obviously the flip side is that Wiggins is miles better offensively.

I don't think so.  Jae Crowder is who he is, and that doesn't include being a knock-down shooter.

Looks like Crowder has really regressed from the three point line.
I don't think so.  Jae Crowder is who he is, and that doesn't include being a knock-down shooter.

I mean, he was shooting over 41% from beyond the arc for like 2/3 of the season. He's down to a bit below 40% now, which is still really good for him, but he's certainly regressing from his torrid start.

yeah.

The phrase is regression to the mean.

Obviously that's what I was meaning. His highest year before this was 34% from beyond the arc.

Our bigs simply have to do a better job of rebounding the ball, specifically being aggressive in pursuit of the ball. KO let his guy get two offensive rebounds (leading to six points) that were certainly attainable for him, but he simply wasn't aggressive enough to get it.

Don't forget being careless with the ball. Our two point guards have 5 TOs combined - Smart (3) and IT (2).

Have we picked up our pace or something since the All Star Break? Because we've been terrible with our TOs since then when we were excellent at not turning the ball over before.

Thibs should throw his offensive playbook from the Bulls in the trash and hire a coach that can actually run an offense to be his top assistant. Maybe have him control substitutions, too.

Basically, Thibs should be the top assistant, not a head coach

6-1 offensive rebounds leading, in part along with our turnovers, to ten overall more field goal attempts than us. That's significant and one of the main reasons we're not winning right now. I can't find the exact number of second chance points right now, but by my count I think it's at least 8, which is primarily due to our terrible defensive rebounding giving up tons of offensive boards.

Me too.

Must be  heavy traffic tonight.

Either way, Marcus Smart is the only player I know that can consistently brick a shot, and run back on defense to get an offensive charge?

Okay, am I crazy to think that RIGHT NOW FOR THIS TEAM I'd rather have Smart than Wiggins?

Obviously Wiggins still has a higher overall ceiling, but right now for a team wanting to win, I'd rather have Smart than Wiggins due to his elite defense and great versatility, BBIQ, and playmaking for the second unit.

Huge loss for them for one of their few remaining home games, especially if coupled with a C's win. This one could really come back to bite them in the arse.

I think Bradley being back has helped Al fit better into this offense. Al is not a #2 scorer; never has been, never will be. Having a guy like AB that is able to take more of the scoring load off of him (while still allowing Al to do plenty of facilitating) let's him play his role, which is making him look even better.  Hopefully it helps him have more games like this before the end of the season

Middle and high school kids are now running to the corners on fast breaks. It's terrible for the gane, imo. Those kids probably only shoot 15% or less on that type of shot.

I'd really like to see Smart's 2 point percentage compared to his 3 point percentage since the New Year. Outside of a couple of games where he had trouble finishing, it seems Smart's 2 point shot/finishing ability at the rim has greatly improved, and it's largely his 3 point shot that is holding his percentages back at the moment.

I'll have to look into it further later.

I thought the C's would have more trouble against the Timberwolves, who were hot coming in.

Even with the Wolves getting 15 offensive rebounds to the C's just 5. The Celtics handled them well.

This is the Horford I thought we would see more of, he was really assertive tonight.

Al's point and rebound averages are down a bit this year, but his assists is way up. In fact 33rd in the league for assists. That good post-position decision making. Good to see him put up a big stat line for his confidence heading into the playoffs..

"Abandon hope, all ye who enter here" should be a big sign in opponent's lockerroom at TD garden.

Sully wanted it to be "free funnel cakes."

We are 8th in defensive rating and 9th in offensive rating in the NBA currently through the season

Oh, great, 17th out of 30 teams.

Mike

If you add the two ranking together I suppose, but that wouldn't make any sense.

Here's the Brown/Smart little argument. I don't think it was anything big at all, but I think this goes beyond tonight.

Smart seems to be angry because Brown went away from the options on the play they were running. This is something that Brown has done frequently throughout the year that I've noticed, and a lot of times it has been Smart, especially when the play is set up for him to get the ball posting up. Rozier has done this frequently, too, and it becomes a problem because the bench unit just isn't good enough to go freelancing on its own. It's not too big of a deal, because that's just young player errors that they learn to avoid as they age and mature. But I can see why Smart gets frustrated about that.

But ultimately I just think this is two very competitive guys getting into a little spat. You can see how competitive these two are together in the practice videos, so I really don't think this is anything big at all.

Yeah nothing to see there. It was what I didnt like with Rozier. Brown's decision were not bad per se, but sometimes a set play is the best decision. Smart is the leader of the second unit and its up to him to run that unit.

TP for the video Potter. That video showed me that Crowder is the toughest guy on the team, he took charge and pushed both guys when needed.

If you notice the little guy has nothing to say at all. He's smart.

Horford yelled at one point, not really getting good value on that 27 million per year deal.

Crowders leadership is a much better bargain at around 7 million.

Lol leadership can't be solely measured by this scene. In fact, I doubt any of us know how much of a leader a player is behind the scenes. Players also don't get paid coz of leadership alone. They get paid based on their skillset, team needs, market value, and production.

Marcus is an intense dude on the court.  Hard as they come.  He might have been a little ruff on Jaylen .  It appeared Jaylen had a decent drive at the bucket .

I think Marcus is getting wound up for playoff time ,  he wants the guys to focus .

IT was smiling the whole time .  He likes the intensity and emotion ......shows him guys care.

This isn't high school, Marcus. It's the NBA. Jaylen needs to be more assertive offensively. Why mess with his head?

The entire Smart/Brown thing started on a quick rebound to offense possession for the T Wolves when I think Brown kind of jogged back to the defensive end and Smart had to cover/foul his guy. I remember them zooming in on TV and you could hear Smart yelling at Brown "Where were you there? Where were you?" I think Smart was just frustrated with him after that.

A little tough love to the rookie is all it is. He's gotta learn. And for all of Smart's fault shooting wise, he seems like one of the main leaders on the team.

This isn't high school.  If getting chewed out by Marcus for not showing enough effort on D messes with Jaylen's head and prevents him from being aggressive on offense, then he doesn't belong here.

He'll be fine.

I love it. This is the kind of stuff that legends are born into. You use fire to harden steel, not cupcakes and rainbows and 20 shots a game. Hopefully Brown continues to get galvanized.

Honestly, I just want Smart around to treat all of the young talented players like this.

You are right, the argument started on court before the play on the video.

I have no problem if Marcus was chewing him out for not hustling back on D. But if it was because Jaylen was asserting himself on offense, different story.

I know that you are really supposed to do offense minus defense. We're #1! We're #1! USA! USA!

TP - my thoughts exactly.

I am a huge Smart fan, but I will definitely take a strong Jaylen drive over a quick Smart pull-up any day. With Smart's shot selection lately, it looks like he has been watching a little too much IT.
