Re-Sign Aron Baynes
Re-Sign Marcus Smart
Re-Sign Jabari Bird (trade him and cash for super protected 2nd later in year)

Sign Brad Wanamaker
Sign Robert Williams, III
Sign Walter Lemon, Jr.
Sign PJ Dozier
Sign Jeff Roberson, Justin Bibbs, Nick King, Marcus Georges-Hunt - waive all later in summer
Sign RJ Hunter
Sign Greg Monroe

Exercise option on Guerschon Yabusele
Exercise option on Jaylen Brown
Exercise option on Jayson Tatum

Waive Kadeem Allen
Waive Abdel Nader (then trade him and cash to OKC for Purvis who was waived immediately)
Waive Jonathan Gibson only to re-sign him later in year

That is it.  The team did absolutely nothing except bring back 3 free agents (1 was Bird), sign its draft pick, and sign a couple of deep bench players in free agency.

You want to know why Boston had a crappy year, because the management didn't do a darn thing to make the team better, to fix problems, or basically do anything at all.  This disaster of a post-season is 100% and directly on Danny Ainge.  He did nothing.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

We were also one game away from finals without our two “best” players. Thinking we would get Kyrie and Hayward is a big two additions. Nobody thought it would not gel at all this year. Lets see what happens next.

based on what was and wasn't done this past year, it's become clear the intent was to have as many assets as possible to use in a trade for AD and possibly someone else.

I've said this many times. Ainge failed miserably at getting the Celts the adequate help they needed. Look at the players Milwaukee added since last summer: Lopez, Hill, Mirotic, Ilyasova, Connaughton and they all had a huge impact on this series.

In the meantime, Ainge stood back with his thumb up his rear.

Yeah back when the entire East was a laughingstock with LeBron James running that conference.

Then suddenly, you got Giannis emerging as the big bad Buck complemented by George Hill, Khris Middleton, Malcolm Brogdon, and Pat Connaughton.

Next you got Kawhi Leonard to Toronto surrounded by Pascal Siakam, Serge Ibaka, Marc Gasol, Kyle Lowry, Danny Green.

Finally you got Jimmy Butler to Philadelphia powered by Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, and Tobias Harris.

Danny needs to make a big move and not just a big primary move but also bolster the roster to counter the likes of those three teams. Can't forget the Pacers who are genuinely tough with Victor Oladipo.

#JTJB (Just Trade Jaylen Brown)
#JFJM (Just Fire Joe Mazzulla)

Please...other teams got better by adding players (and the Bucks got a good coach). Boston did nothing and it showed. Last year's version of the C's couldn't beat this Bucks team.

I mean, there's a 6' 11" unibrow MVP-caliber player motivation for Danny's hesitance to do anything. It's pretty clear he was sacrificing this season to keep all his assets in play for Davis this summer.

But, let's be real, after struggling and developing bad habits all season long, no mid-season addition was going to help us in the playoffs this year. This is hardly Ainge's fault. He made the trades and draft picks to get this team the talent it needed; that talent was just completely mishandled all year long.

you know what might have actually helped acquire Davis and fix some issues trading Morris and Rozier for better fitting pieces that were signed past this summer.

You know what else might have helped the team and had no bearing on assets needed for Davis. Using the MLE.  Heck he probably could have used the MLE in a way that added non guaranteed money for next year making it even easier to acquire Davis.

The simple truth is Ainge threw away the season.  He did nothing at all. I'd have rather had him do something and fail then nothing at all.

Edit. And what is really aggravating is the team is still paying the luxury tax. At least if it wasn't a tax team I could understand not using the mle if it would have made the team a tax team, but that just wasn't the case

Ya but, nobody had a problem with that to start the year. Most pundits thought we were the favorite because we were already really good. And on top of that theres not a lot he could do. We didn't have cap room to sign somebody, we wanted to save our assets for AD, we didn't wnat to trade guys for pick because we wanted to go for it. Given those constraints I can't really blame Ainge, although I would have traded at least one of Rozier or Morris for assets, a tradeable contract and to open up touches for the young guys.

No, he didn't. This is  an insane take to me. Could he have used the MLE and/or traded Rozier or Morris? Sure. He probably should have, but neither was saving THIS season. Those are both longer term plays. Short of magically altering the CBA to allow us to trade for Davis there wasn't much Ainge could do this year.

Except trade for Kawhi. thats the what if.

The only move I really disagreed with was signing Jabari Bird, and I doubt any of the floated options would have made a difference.

Now, I would have gotten in on Kawhi, because you get very few chances to land MVP level players.  But, there was a ton of risk.

Adding those level of player doesn't help us, at all. For all the talk of how badly we played what it really came down to is our big three got badly outplayed by theres.

If Mr. Ainge can keep Kyrie and land AD, then I'd be more than happy to sing his praises. However, we need to see it happen first.

Yep, thats the one you have to consider. In retrospect it seems simple but at the time there  was serious concerns.

A) His character, what kind of guy quits on Pop and the Spurs?
B) His injury, would he be healthy.
C) His contract, it seemed likely he would be a one year rental.
D) Opportunity cost, if you give stuff up for him can you get Davis?

So a lot to consider.
