Carsen had to make so many adjustments  from defensive end ,the speed and athleticism and getting to the rim all conspired to effect his three point shooting. Being so ball dominant in college and struggling to get his shot off at rim
He has to relearn how to play basketball  -letting it slow down and being ready after stretches on the bench to suddenly being inserted to score..
His adjustment was all around difficult.
There was almost a sullen form of concentration, that I don't think is good for a shooter off the bench .I really hope his game can evolve into a second team scorer or plug in for instant offense.

I am giving up on Carsen Edwards.

Unless people believe that focussing on our current core of Walker, Smart, Brown, Tatum, Hayward and Theis to compete for a championship is beating a dead horse, I think it's not worth it to allocate much playing time and patience in developing Edwards as I think it's a long shot that he will make it as an NBA player and moreover I find him a bad fit on our roster.

Edwards is first on my list to trade for anything remotely valuable.

We have to give up on either Carsen or Romeo. I pick Carsen.

That's a no-brainer now I'd say. Although after that hot pre-season most of us thought differently about Edwards.

He's been pretty much what they expected. Note that they signed him for three years guaranteed (team option in 2022) at small money - it's a development contract, not a make-good contract.

He creates 3-pt shots off the dribble with either hand. Quick release, has side-steps to either side, and most important he's not afraid to let it fly. Has a fake and dribble move into a midrange jumper that's usually open with today's defenses; and he's got a real chance, with his stroke, at becoming one of the rare players who can be productive from there.

Where does he wind up in the judgment of NBA history? The upside is Isiah Thomas with better defense. The big middle of the bell curve has comps like Terry Rozier, who can create lots of shots for himself, not at an awesome percentage, but with an ability to hit clutch shots.

I've said before about his 3-pt%: it's not a lot of shots. Mechanics and stroke are really good and he squares up and lets it go really quickly. He's got the handles to get open. You can be confident that the threes will be a strength.

Good lower body strength and reflexes. Sounds like his determination and intangibles check out.

Less certain is getting to the rim and finishing; and if he really is going to attain IT nirvana he'll have to find his way with that. That's the thing that you need to track next season; that's the difference between a specialist on the outer rungs of a rotation and a sixth-man.

'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021

Not giving up yet.  No reason to waive but trade filler is possible.

He should get the beginning of next season to see if he can fill the role the Celtics need him to fill; three point specialist off the bench who can heat up fast.

The Celtics need a backup plan for this role next year.

I've stuck up for Edwards before. He did not offer much this season.

It is fun to look at the numbers he put up while single handedly carrying Purdue to the elite 8 and a 80-75 OT loss to Virginia.

In four NCAA tourney games he averaged 34.7 ppg while playing 40 minutes per game + the OT.

Purdue 26-10

Edwards was the high scorer for Purdue in 31 out of 36 games.

As a senior, in 36 games he attempted 380 three point shots (yikes) he made 135 (.368)

Listed as one of the hardest workers by his HS and college coaches.

I think he has a chance, but, it is so very slim...he is about as specialist as a NBA specialist can be.

(Brad may not like him...below)

Villanova 2nd round  -- 42 points
Tennessee sweet 16 -- 29 points
Virginia elite 8 -- 42 points

Top programs in the country playing for all of the money...and they could not stop him.

It might not translate, but if it does, he'd be some of the cheapest offense ever.

So a guy picked in the second round was expected to come in and give us 10 pts off the bench? Give me a break. He was on a cold streak for whatever reason in the beginning of season. He got good looks, just didn't knock them down. It's what he does though (shoot 3's at a high %) and it's what he will do. Half season is no reason to suddenly give up on him only to watch him go to another team and become a good shooter off the bench.

I still have hopes that he can serve as an Eddie House type of guy off the bench to hit 2-3 3 pointers in the 2nd quarter, keeping the floor open for others to attack.   Would be sweet if he could contribute something like that this season. He is more than capable.   He is very much a guy who needs to have his confidence, and not worry about missing a shot, because he knows the next one is going in. Actually I think the length of NBA caused him some adjustment problems, he seemed to rush shots out of rhythm.   The game just needs to slow down a little bit for him to be able to be the assassin we saw in CLE.

He is shooting 30% from three in his current role.  That doesn't work for a three point specialist.

The worry is he may be a guy who needs volume shots during the game to get hot and hit at a high rate.  More of a rhythm shooter the pure shooter.  That just isn't going to work on a good team in the NBA at his size.

So hopefully he develops that getting hot quick off the bench so he is that weapon.

Again, don't expect too much out of a second round pick on a team that already has more than several talented players ahead of him. He was great at summer league (and quite possibly at practice) so Brad gave him a chance to give C's that spark off the bench. He didn't shoot well so off to the bench & Maine but he's a better shooter than 30%. That's a guaran[dang]tee. He's not Malcolm Brogdon or other rare 2nd round picks that boom but he's not a bust. He's a specialist and his specialty let him down but not out. Rookie! Second! Round! Pick! I don't see what the issue is. He's not a lottery pick that busted.

In short, we basically don't have room for him his growth but he's an okay player for a second-rounder who can improve elsewhere.

I do hope he improves elsewhere, just not to the Lakers or 76ers.

Carsen Edwards just needs a few more shots to fall and he will be a useful weapon off the bench on a super cheap contract.
