I don't think Boston can because it would have to be a sign and trade and I think Boston will be over the hard cap line.  He has to opt in and then get traded for Boston to have a reasonable shot at acquiring him.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

This is my understanding as well.  All we can offer a FA is the $6.4M MLE and I don't think that is going to get us Beal.  Sign and trades result in a hard cap and since we are already over the cap, we are pretty much precluded from doing a sign and trade.

I don't know what the deadlines are but Beal could say to Washington that he would opt in to the final year but only if he is traded to Boston for say Horford and Smart or something like that.  The leverage would be that if Washington doesn't agree to the trade, than Beal will sign elsewhere and WAS gets nothing.  I do not think this is going to happen.  I am only saying that this is a scenario that could happen.

Tatum convinces him to come to Boston and Washington agrees to a sign in trade instead of letting him walk for nothing. It’s definitely possible.

Now that he’s opted out, it’s pretty much impossible right?

Smart and White make way more sense for Boston in my mind.  And I think the Wiz would rather have both those guys than only 1 and Horford.

My understanding is that beal opting out pretty much closes the door on the possibility because we would need a sign and trade and that would hard cap the team.  It may (or may not) be possible theoretically but in that theory, the team is mostly gutted.  So not worth it or even realistic.

This doesn’t make sense for either side. Why would Washington want to let him walk for nothing vs agreeing to a sign+trade? Also, there are no contending teams that I can see under the salary cap for Beal to sign with. Doesn’t add up.

The cap and the apron are not the same thing.
