Game Notes
Ray Allen returns to the Garden for the first time as the Celtics host the Miami Heat.   This is the second of 4 meetings between these two teams.  They met in Miami on opening night of the season.  After the Heat received their rings and raised the championship banner, they beat the Celtics 120-102.

Last season the Celtics won the series 3-1 and they have a 9 game winning streak against the Heat in the Garden.  The return of Ray and the fans reaction to him will be a big story,  but the bigger story will be whether the Celtics can finally snap out of their funk and end their 6 game losing streak.

The Celtics and the Heat are at opposite ends of the playoff teams in the East.  The Heat are in first place, 9.5 games ahead of the Celtics, who are in the 8th spot.  The Heat have won their last 4 games while the Celtics have lost their last 6 games.   The Celtics are 4-6 in their last 10 games while the Heat are 6-4.   The Celtics are 13-9 at home while the Heat are 10-9 on the road.

If the Celtics play the way they did in the first half of the game vs the Hawks, they can win this game.   If they play the way they did in the second half of the Hawks game,  they probably will be blown out.   We never know which team will show up.  But, if they can't get up for this game and give 100% effort,  I'm not sure what can motivate them.

Key Matchups
(http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/rajon_rondo.jpg)  vs  (http://www.nba.com/media/playerfile/mario_chalmers.jpg)
Rajon Rondo vs Mario Chalmers
Rondo is coming off two straight triple doubles in consecutive losses.    Rondo needs to run more and advance the ball with passes rather than walking the ball up the court.   He also needs to stick with Chalmers who has a way of hitting big shots against the Celtics.

(http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/662.jpg)  vs  (http://a.espncdn.com/i/headshots/nba/players/65/1966.jpg)
Paul Pierce vs LeBron James
This is always a tough matchup for any team.  Expect Jeff Green to get the call to cover LeBron some of the time in this game.  Green has been effective in the past guarding him and so should take some of the pressure off of Pierce by doing so.   Pierce

Honorable Mention
Avery Bradley vs Dwyane Wade
Avery Bradley proved to be a Wade stopper last season before his injury.  Hopefully he will pick up right where left off last season.   Also, with Avery's offense coming back, he should make Wade have to work on the defensive end as well.

Keys to the Game
Defense
Both teams pride themselves on their defense, although the Celtics have only played defense in spurts this season.     Defense is always a key to winning and if the Celtics want to win this game, they will have to play lock down team defense for 48 minutes.

Rebound
The Heat are the only team in the league that rebound worse than the Celtics.      The Celtics need to crash the boards and prevent the Heat from getting second chance baskets and tip ins.  They can also limit Miami's fast breaks  and get some fast break opportunities of their own by crashing the boards as well.

Be Aggressive
When the Celtics are aggressive they are tough to beat.  They have to be aggressive in going to the basket and not settle for jumpers, especially if they aren't falling.  The Celtics second unit was aggressive in driving and defending and going after loose balls against the Hawks and built a 27 point lead.  The starters came back in and were passive and lost the lead and the game.

X-Factors
Officiating and Effort
We know that the Heat get special treatment from the refs.  A player as physical as LeBron can't go weeks without getting called for a foul without the refs letting him get away with a lot.    We can only hope for the refs to be at least semi-fair in this one.   The Celtics also need to give 100% effort for 48 minutes if they want to win this game.

As soon as Lebron moves to pf, Doc will counter and GAME OVER!!!!

I'd put sully in, go 2/3, and let our big man work him in the post.

Problem is, Sully will get called for a foul for breathing on LeBron.

I know Sully isn't the best defender, but this rookie treatment is brutal.

I think we have to be big today and crash boards.

Miami's rebounding problems is the same as we have. We outrebound them, we win.

I have a straaaaaaange feeling about today. Everything is going against us, we are playing terribly, Heat are hot...

I think we play desperate, they don't. We win.

There is no good reason for that Miami team to be getting out-rebounded. They have good rebounders at every position in their starting five including elite rebounds at the two wings spots.

They have the talent to be a good rebounding squad.

Interestingly enough, I actually really like how we match up with the cHeat.

Rondo on Chalmers
Rondo clearly has the upper hand on this matchup, and is superior to Chalmers in every way bar outside shooting.

Bradley on Wade
Bradley defends Wade about as well as anybody in the league.  Wade also has a short fuse and has a tendancy to get frustrated if things don't go his way, and Bradley has a special gift for frustrating opposing players with his 'in your face' defensive pressure.

Pierce on Lebron
Lebron obviously has the edge here overall but Pierce and Lebron have had many warriors battles in the past - Pierce has typically held his own, and has had his share of victories.

Bass on Haslem
This is about as perfect a matchup for Bass as you can get.  He gets to matchup against another undersized PF who's not a major offensive threat.  Both guys are more jump shooters than anything else on offense as well, and both are 'energy' guys.  Very similar players.  Bass is a better scorer, but Haslem is superior rebounder - Bass will need to make an effort on the boards.

Garnett on Bosh
Another perfect matchup - there is nobody in the league I like KG matched up with more than Bosh.  KG defends Bosh incredibly well, and Bosh has had very few big games historically when KG has been matched up with him.  KG is a better defender then Bosh is a scorer, and KG is also a better scorer than Bosh is a defender.  Generally KG has the edge here.

Backup PG - Terry / Barbosa vs Norris Cole
I think this game will be a good opportunity for Barbosa to do some damage.  Miami (like us) lack shotblockers inside, and Barbosa is incredibly good at getting to the basket.  We need to get him the ball and let him drive hard, hopefully get some easy layups.  He's also a good outside shooter and a good free throw shooter, so Miami can't sag off him or put him at the line.  Cole is a solid defender, but I think Barbosa could be a wild card here.

Terry may be a little slow to stick with Cole, but if he breaks out of his shooting slump and hits some big shots he could be a key.  He's no stranger to killing the Heat, and you can bet that Miami (based on history alone) will be sending defensive attention his way.

Backup SG - Lee vs Allen
Miami's biggest weapon off the bench is Ray Allen, and there are few bench players who can defend him as well as Lee potentially can.  Lee is quick and athletic and should be able to get around a lot of those screens.  He's also good at getting deflection and Ray is an unspectacular ball handler, so there's the potential for Lee to pick up a few easy steals.

On the other end of the court Lee needs to take advantage of his athleticism and attack Ray off the dribble.  Lee is pretty good at getting to the basket when he wants to, and Ray is way too slow to keep up with him at this point in his career.  Lee should be able to abuse this matchup all night if he's smart about it.

Backup SF - Green vs Miller
Jeff Green has really made an effort to improve his defense lately, and he's atletic, long and strong enough to give Miller plenty of trouble on defense.  He needs to stay in the game mentally and make sure he closes out on Miller's three point shot, and if he does that he should win the machup.

Miller is not a great defender and Green has the physical advantage in every way - stength, height, length, speed.  If Green has one of his "on" games offensively Miller has no hope of defending him.

Backup PF - Sullinger vs Battier / Lewis
This could be an interesting matchup.  Battier is as good a defender as there is in the league and is good at frustrating opposing players.  He's not afraid to bang and take a beating.  Sullinger bangs with the best of them and does a great job of frustrting opponents simply by bruising them to a pulp.  Battier will make it hard for Sully to score, but our young rookie should be able to absolutely dominate Battier on the boards.

Rashard Lewis has no hope of getting rebounds over Sullinger, and Sully can post up at will against Rashard's weak frame.  The problem is that Lewis is fairly agile and will take a lot of outside shots, so Sully needs to challenge and not allow him to get open shots.  This could drag Sully outside of the paint and remove some of his potential rebounding benefits.

Backup center - Collins vs Joel Anthony
Another nice matchup.  Collins does pretty much nothing outside of bang, hard foul, and play tough bruiser defense.  Anthony is more of the same.  Neither is any form of offense threat whatsoever.

So there it is - we match up with these guys about as good as anybody in the league, and yet somehow I still feel like we're going to lose this.

Important mention - we need to make a serious effort to challenge Miami's shooters.  We've had questionable three-point defense up until recently, and if we let Miami get up open three's this game could be over very quickly.  If we play good team defense and stick to our assignments, it'll be a good game.

the celtics will have to stop playing starters regardless of their performance...for a change.

the celtics will have to be consistent on defense from start to finish...for a change.

which will let them win...for a change.  ;D

I want to see Sully get some post ups today. I don't think he got any in the first meeting early in the season against Miami.

They need to test Sully in the paint against Miami's small ball lineup when/if they use it. To see if Sully can be effective enough to force them away from it. Or if he can't, and, if Boston needs to go small and matchup against their small-ball lineup in the playoffs.

Have to vent already.  REFS got this game in the bag for the Heat.

I count 5 distinctly horrible calls that benefited the Heat, from no-call fouls to shot clock management.

This is what refs do for the Heat.  Make other teams play perfect ball to beat them because the refs are giving everything to the Heat.

Really?  On the first possession of the game they allow the Heat to reset the shot clock and get another shot at scoring, which, of course, the Heat do.

And, you know it's b.s. because the ref waited five seconds to blow his whistle and make he call.

It's difficult enough to stop them in 24 seconds.  You give them 48 seconds the score and that's not a level playing field.

Not saying the Heat need the refs to win (I already thought the Celts would lose by 10+), but it's obvious the refs are helping at every opportunity.  Which makes a fan wonder - why bother watching the game?

I am expecting Miami to build an early 10-12 point lead and just hold it comfortably for most of the game. Like a cat playing with a tassle. Never really turning on the gas but always have another gear ready to blow the C's out of the water if they try to make a run.

Don't like Doc's rotations right now. Would've preferred Terry starting with Avery, and have Lee coming off the bench. We need one of Lee and Avery on the floor at all times preferably.

Now we're going with Barbosa and Terry together, not sure how that will work out.

Quote
what's the point in whining about the refs...already? yawn

The refs don't have it out for the Celtics and are irrelevant in terms of the outcome of the game...if they get something wrong it's because it's a hard game to officiate, get over it

Jeff Green is so frustrating.  That 2 dribble pullup was beautiful.  You can see his versatility and talent.  Then he plays great D on Lebroid on the other end.

Just need the consistency.
Totally agree, cant understand how a player so gifted can be, sorry, stupid at times.

Because he's awful on defense and causes floor spacing problems with Rondo/Lee

The correct response was: "Because Doc Rivers is stubborn and insists on continuing to play veterans he trusts like Jason Terry to the detriment of the team."

That call was DISGUSTING!

The refs could all clearly see it was entirely Lewis.  It was in the open court with no one else around.

But, can't make the correct call and give Boston the free throw.  Must make the NBA-mandated call and protect the Heat.

It makes me want to vomit.

Our guards *cough* Rondo *cough* don't let guys blow right by them and WOW OUR DEFENSE LOOKS REALLY GOOD.  WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT NOT LETTING GUYS BLOW PAST YOU WOULD HAVE POSITIVE EFFECTS ON YOUR DEFENSE.  WOW.

Now, the offensive rebounding is another thing, but the actual defense has been superb.   Lebron and Wade - 7-18.  And since Bosh started 5-6 in the first ten minutes of the game, he is now 0-3 since then over the next 14 minutes.

Doc needs to make Pierce simply another weapon on this team, and take away the "star player" treatment.

Pierce is still 12th in the league in usage percentage, meaning a lot of Boston's plays are run through him.  Mostly when he's standing out beyond the 3-pt line.

Doc needs Pierce to slide back a bit and become a talented role player (even in starter's minutes).  He's still the captain, he's still the truth, but...

This team is so much more dangerous when the ball is moving through everyone's hands and anyone can potentially score.

I know we all know this, but it is evident again today.

Celtics are

Quote
Celtics 20-13 without Rondo in last 4 seasons (.606) -- .604 win pct when he does play

I'm sorry that he tore his ACL. But facts are facts, Celtics have better record minus Rondo. The only championship came when Rondo role was minuscule. I'm excited to watch Avery grow, and Terry play more with the ball.

I love seeing this ball movement.

Defense is better without Rondo.

We're pushing the fastbreak because Rondo isn't there.

Ball movement is way better without Rondo stopping the flow of the game.

Coming from Rondo's biggest homer for years, trade Rondo this offseason.  Playoff Rondo is a top 5 player, but if you don't even make the playoffs because regular season Rondo just rolls in neutral all season, then it doesn't matter how good he is in the regular season.  He isn't LBJ.  Rondo's sub 100% is not good enough.  LBJ is the only one in the NBA that can go less than 100% and still be elite.

20 minutes so far... too much. You have Lee with 24 and Bradley with 21. Barbosa needs to be used in shorter spurts.

The big question is how much of next season will Rondo miss?

Well, it's only the end of January. A torn ACL normally takes around 8+ months so that would have Rondo returning around the start of training camp. If Boston is cautious, sometime after between start of the season and New Year's Day 2014.

But he has been getting no love from the  officials.  He should have had 6 more FTs than he's had in the past 10 minutes.

I hate how everyone is ignored in the last three minutes of a game/entire overtime except for Pierce and KG.

Doc needs to involve everyone.

Pierce and KG are not the players they used to be and defenses know they only have to guard those two guys.  It makes it too easy for the opposition.

Doc needs to spread the ball around more.  It's no wonder we've lost so many close games in regulation and overtime of late.

we got 2 bang-bang charge calls, we have to stop blaming the refs. the team has to take advantage.

We got two incredibly obvious charge calls that any middle school ref could call accurately.

If the refs were calling things even remotely fairly, Wade would be long gone, Battier would be long gone and it's a different game.  In fact if we had gotten the FTs at the end of the 4th on Pierce we would have been up 1 or 2 with 2 seconds remaining and the Heat with no time outs and having to go the full court.

Wade btw, 6-20, 6 Turnovers.
I really believe this is the biggest key to beating Miami in a playoff series.

Stopping D-Wade.

I Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.ing hate Wade.

Even on that last play he got away with a push off to try to get a shot, passed it to Battier and then held Pierce to prevent a good contest.

I used to love his game and character.   Now I can't stand him.

That poor TD Garden crowd.  They better enjoy the victory while they can, for they will receive some very sobering news when they turn on the TV tonight.

Doris should have let the team talk about Rondo on their own terms, especially since the press knew players were currently in the dark from Doc. Not very classy.

Big, gutsy win. Really emotional, one of the most memorable regular season games of recent memory.

We won with heart today. We would need more now that Rondo is out for the season.

Im happy and sad at the same time.

and on the final possession bradley refused to give wade space to move or shoot, so wade had to pass it to battier for a near impossible three....and the celtics win.  ;D

Got a feeling that Pierce wont be around here after the deadline.
Why, because he sucks?  Can we stop trying to trade players that suck please.
No because we are struggling right now and Pierce is our most "valuable" trade piece right now.
Oh, so the fact that we are struggling right now largely because of pierce has nothing to so with it?

Oh for goodness sake, get a clue seriously.

Pierce is the reason for us struggling?  Pierce is our leading scorer and the ONLY guy who can create offense on this team.

With our lack of scoring he has pretty much the entire scoring load of this team on his shoulders, give the guy a break!

Dwayne Wade was such a punk down the stretch.

He killed them, selfishly taking possessions away from LeBron, all the fouls.

He might as well have been wearing a white jersey.

If I'm Reilly I'm trading him out of town as soon as I could.  The guy is selfish and a punk.

I have never so completely flipped on a player as I have with Wade.  Used to love him now it's total hate.

Only thing that can make it all worse if for LA to beat OKC leaving them to start believing in themselves.  LA up by 1 with 6 to go.

We played AMAZING defense on LeBron kudos to the entire team but most importantly Jeff he was awesome. You saw today what difference Courtney Lee, Jeff, Sully, Bradley etc can make against this Heat team. If they gotta make a small move for a PG or big do it but I still like this team against anybody out east if they can stay healthy.
