Here is the latest they are telling me: The San Antonio Spurs are the front-runners to land Al Jefferson in a trade with the Utah Jazz – and they are frontrunners like Secretariat was in the 1973 Belmont Stakes.
Sounds like Splitter, S Jack's contract and maybe a couple other assets.
Presumably they’d also ask for Tiago Splitter, because somebody would need to back up Kanter, and because Splitter is having an improved season in the year his contract expires – meaning Utah would not be taking on any long-term financial obligation.
San Antonio throws in Stephen Jackson for salary-matching purposes (almost an exact match), and voila. Captain Jack will love Salt Lake City, hunh?

Wow. this comes out of nowhere. Huge addition for the Spurs if true.
-
Well, if this happens, Spurs are right there with the thunder up top on the west.
-
I'm not so crazy about it for San Antonio. I don't think Al makes them much better offensively. And I think he makes them worse defensively.
-
Duncans face up game and passing ability with Big Al's back to the basket game would be fun to watch
-
It would be nice to see Big Al on a top-tier playoff team. I hope this happens.
-
The become the biggest threat to the Heat.
In a 7 game series, how long do you really want Lebron banging down low with those two?

Yeah, my reaction too.

To save Lebron's energy, they've had Battier or Haslem guard the big in the post. Haslem's a good defender while Battier hasn't held up as well as he did last year. It's still an advantage for the Jazz of course.
There's a flip-side to this as well. Jefferson is, if not the worst, at least in the bottom five, pick and roll defenders in the league. He'd be a huge liability against a team boasting both Lebron and Wade.
-
even if this happens, Spurs still heavily depend on Big 3 health

Just run zone.

I think they'd be entirely too slow.
How many easy transition buckets would they give up against Denver, LAC, and if the Thunder went small?

They would control the boards.
And it is hard to run when the offense is making baskets.

Aren't they always pretty slow, though?

Makes sense for Utah
I'm not sold on Jefferson caring much about winning and could make San Antonio worse but it's the worth the risk for the spurs

I'm not so sure. Devner pushed the much superior LA Lakers to 7 last year b/c they got about 10 easy baskets a game beating Gasol/Bynum up the floor.

Jefferson shoots 47.5 percent and hardly gets to the line despite having one of the best pumpfakes in the game. He's not exactly a world beater offensively.
-
Spurs should keep Splitter, Duncan still not back to playing, but...
With Jefferson (or even without)they're a top 2 contender.
Totally up there with OKC as undisputed two best teams.
-
Who will the Spurs have to play against to make it out of the West?
- LA Clippers
- Oklahoma City Thunder
- Memphis Grizzlies
- Golden State Warriors
- LA Lakers
Big Al and Duncan will force teams to stay big against them.
- I think that Big Al and Duncan combination will work well against Oklahoma. Give San Antonio an extra (new) advantage over Oklahoma that they haven't had in the past. The Thunder's small ball lineups have been difficult for San Antonio in the past. I am not sure that is enough to get them past Oklahoma though. Plus, they lose Jackson as a secondary defender with size/length against Durant.
- Lakers (if they make the playoffs) look too weak to beat San Antonio.
- I don't like Memphis' chances against San Antonio with or without Big Al.
- The Clippers might be the biggest threat. They have the size to matchup defensively against San Antonio in the paint. I don't think either Big Al or Duncan are athletic enough to defend Blake Griffin effectively. Chris Paul can put Big Al in pick and rolls regularly and take advantage of him. Clippers are dangerous in transition and can exploit Big Al and Duncan again.
- Golden State can matchup well against the Spurs size. Lots of shooters and scoring on the perimeter. They'd still be dangerous against SAS.
Not sure Big Al really gives them that much of an added weapon / improvement in making it out of the West. I think he'd be pretty useful against the Thunder but I am not sure they would gain that much against the other teams in the West.
-
The Jazz need a point guard, and the Spurs have two of them not named Tony Parker. So you can expect Patty Mills (who Lindsey is familiar with and fond of) to be the preferable choice over Nando de Colo.
Technically, they have a fourth (not including Gary Neal's ability to play some PG). Cory Joseph has been bouncing up and down from the D-League. I mention him because he was the PG on Avery Bradley's high school team.
-
Garnett makes way more sense for them than Jefferson does and I'd probably do Jackson and Splitter for KG (I'd like that a lot more than Bledsoe and pieces from LAC).
-
I think Big Al and Duncan would be a VERY tough combo. Two low post offensively gifted bigs is a very rare thing in the NBA right now, the only other duo being Memphis and I think this is better as far as scoring.
-
It would be nice to see Big Al on a top-tier playoff team. I hope this happens.
This is how I feel. I don't really care what anybody says, I stil love Big Al and his game.
Please basketball gods put him on a good team for once to show the nba what he can do!
-
If I'm San Antonio, I make a hard push for KG with a similar package.
KG is a much better fit for their team needs than Big Al. Gives them a much higher defensive ceiling (Parker/Green/Leonard/KG/Duncan would be a fantastic defensive grouping) and a much more versatile and useful offensive skill-set for their offense.
-
How great would it be to see Big Al play with Tony Parker?
Jefferson has such little exposure to top-flight point guard play. He only experienced about half a season with Deron Williams before Williams took off for Jesey. And obviously Rondo was not Rondo back in 2006.
That would be quite a team to contend with on the glass between Duncan/Jefferson/Leonard.
-
Losing Splitter would actually hurt the Spurs as crazy as that might sound.
-
If this is true, I'm happy for big Al, his game is made for the playoffs, hope he gets his!

Could have sworn the Clippers got swept in dominating fashion last year against SA..

CP3 and Blake were both hurt.
If your top two players are 50% to 80% its tough to beat another contender.

Why can't the Jazz get more for Jefferson? And why not trade for a wing or PG?
I'm confused.

looking forward to Big Al getting a chance to play with a very good team to see how good a player he really is. I think he'll make a more positive impact than the one we expected Antoine to give Dallas after that trade

Not to mention a HOF coach. Was looking forward to seeing what Sloan did for him in Utah but DWilliams ruined that variable, along with his own.

I think Big Al has improved a lot under Ty Corbin. Become a more well-rounded offensive threat. A much better passer. Better decision maker. More range and accuracy on his jump shot.
I think Tyrone Corbin has been very good for Big Al.

Don't disagree. Was more emphasizing what a HOF personality can do for his accountability, esp on defense and fouls. Rooting for Al big time.
-
I've always liked big al and hope he can finally feel some success and know what it takes to win. Everywhere he goes the team turns out worse
-
Speaking of the spurs, they are once again quietly having a great regular season and putting themselves in great position come playoff time. That team is something else.
-
If this happens, Spurs are the favorites for the ring, I would love for Big Al, as he deserves to be on a contender, he's an all star. Spurs would be the right team for him, though I wish Boston.
-
Since they still have Kanter and Favors (and Millsap), it'd be nice to be able to get Splitter for one of our wings.

(Yes, I know the Jazz wouldn't do it.)

Why can't the Jazz get more for Jefferson?
Because he is an expiring contract. Unless a team is willing to pay him market value as a free agent, he is a rental.
-
I don't see why people think this move would make the Spurs a sudden title favorite.
Honestly, I don't think it increases their ceiling all that much. He is a fine player, but he's not a star.
For all of the love people give his offensive game, his field goal percentage is still BELOW the league average. And his defense, while improved lately, is still mediocre.
Definitely a good player, don't get me wrong, but honestly I wouldn't trade Splitter for him. Splitter is younger and has more upside. Al Jefferson is old. Why do the Spurs need another old player, who isn't anywhere near as efficient or cerebral a player as the other players on their team?
Splitter is FAR more efficient offensively, no worse at defense, and is a better passer.
-
Something like this might entice Utah

Um. Tiago Splitter is 3 days older than Al Jefferson.
-
Hm. My mistake, I thought Splitter was younger.
Doesn't change the fact that, at least this season, has been a more efficient player.
-

I don't pay much attention to his fg% as he is their go-to scorer and the only one who can really create his own offense. He is forced to take a lot of bad shots. How many #1 options shoot a great fg%? (Outside lebron obv)
Splitter is probably not even the third option on the spurs. They are asked to do two very different things. Not a fair comparison IMO
-
I'd rather see him come home to BOS somehow, but Spurs are a Class destination for him.
I'd be happy for him if this happens.
He'd keep the Spurs window open a bit longer...perhaps keep Duncan around another yr, too.
In any event, he'd be the primary Big for their future...not a bad situation for him or the Spurs. He is one of the most polished lowpost threats out there RIGHT NOW, and will get better defensively with Popovich.
A Big Al/Duncan frontline is giving OKC much more trouble than they did last yr's playoffs. If this happens, OKC's path gets a bit harder.
-

They would control the boards.
And it is hard to run when the offense is making baskets.
Al Jefferson also keeps the burden on Duncan much smaller. Means Duncan is fresh for the playoffs in both this season and the next.
As long as SAS keeps Leonard, it's a great trade.

Ask yourself what role the players play. Jefferson is the #1 offensive option, and the defensive anchor on a team without the coaching or players to cover his weaknesses. I'm a big Splitter fan; I think him and Gortat are peers. But look at Splitter'ssystem and Jefferson's. Jefferson should do much better in SAS
-
I wonder how they'd run their offense with Jefferson.
His comfort zone and skill set are far different from what SAS runs right now.
