I'm starting the thread a tad early but there are lots of things to be excited about, and once the draft will be done this should be one of the hottest topics

Things to be excited about

- It's massive. 24 national teams will be playing on four different countries (Finland, Romania, Israel and Turkey)

- Rosters have to be confirmed but there will be lots of NBA players and young European prospects (no Doncic though, saltlover, Slovenia somehow managed to stay out)

- and prolly the best reason of them all, Great Britain plays as a single country

Official website

Wikipedia has a good entry with the groups and the schedule

PS woah, my bad Slovenia is in, and is actually in the same group as Greece. We play on Sept. 3.

So, the format is p straightforward. 24 teams in 4 groups of 6. 4 teams qualify from each group to give you a first round of 16. And then they play one game elimination rounds to the end.

At the groups stage, the rules for classification are 1) Points; 2) Head-to-head results; 3) Points difference; 4) Points scored.

I now add the groups

TP for the labor. Euro is always so competitive with teams tightly matched. Looking forward to it. For Croatia, Žižić and Hezonja canceled the appearance.

Androslav, I'm also really excited about this one. I like that they spread the organization over four countries and that there will be countries that got very little coverage previously (GB, Iceland, Finland, Romania and others).

I also think the competition will be tight. There are lots of teams that could end up winning the gold. To name a few: Spain, France, Turkey - the playoffs will be played in Istanbul- , Russia, Lithuania, Croatia.

Any ideas on how Croatia's starting 5 might look up in September?

I was briefly sad at no Doncic!  Thanks for posting this so far in advance, as I now have months to plan my sleep schedule and figure out how to watch the games.

Yes, sorry for that, my brain must have confused Slovenia with Slovakia or sthg.

Streams for European games are usually better quality than the NBA ones bcs there are less viewers and FIBA doesnt care much about copyright.

You can find here the schedule in PDF http://www.fiba.com/eurobasket/2017/full-schedule.pdf

Games start between 13.45 and 20.00 (GMT+3). iirc you are in GMT-7, so the late games will be in the morning your time.

Not sure about our 5 right now.
Forwards are clear, Šarić and Bogdanović, our 2 best players.
Center position IMO will go down between Planinić (good Olympics, physical rebounder, goes to and hits FT's), and Zubac (good touch inside, solid but young)
Guard position has been our trouble for a decade now. 2 will probably still be Simon's (smart, good PNR player, fairly unathletic) and PG spot is either Ukić (only a defensive contributor now, plays cause we didn't develop younger ones) or some international fast guard a la Draper (Real M, already played 2 times for us), if both sides can make it work.
There are 25 names on the list up till now, so still a long way to go.

To be honest i don't like it.... 24 teams are far too many imho. There are many countries with 5-6 half decent players + an American scorer. It looks more like club competition ....

I also think there are too many teams, it seems 16 are enough to keep the talent level up.

I hope Gasol and Hernangómez brothers can go with us. Along with Ibaka/Mirotic, it would be the best inside rotation by far (I don't think I'm biased  :-[)

That's not bias, that is common sense :)

About ten days ago, Kostas Missas was appointed head coach of the Greek national team.

I doubt he will stay long time: last time he coached at a high level was Panionios in 2002. Since then he has been on the Women and the U20 teams.

http://www.fiba.com/eurobasket/2017/news/veteran-missas-takes-the-helm-of-greece

At the end of the article there is a list of Greece's friendlies:

Quote
Greece will host a tournament in Patras (August 7-8) that also features Romania and Ukraine and then take part in a Belgrade tournament with Montenegro and Serbia (August 11-12).

Greece will square off again from August 18-19 against Great Britain in two friendlies in London.

From August 23-25 in Athens at the famous Olympic stadium, OAKA, Greece will host the Eurobank Acropolis Tournament, taking on Serbia, Italy and Georgia.
